Section 1.3 Acquire a sample spectrum 1.3 Acquire a sample spectrum 1. When the background spectrum has been acquired, insert the sample in the sample holder or sampling accessory. For an FT-IR series spectrometer: • For MIR, use the polystyrene sample supplied with the spectrometer (see Figure 1-8 below). • For NIR, do not use the polystyrene sample. Instead, place an ordinary plastic bag over the sample holder. For another model of spectrometer, use a sample of the appropriate type. Figure 1-8. Set the parameters as follows: Acquisition type: Normal Spectral Range Start and End: • for MIR: from 4000 to 400 cm -1 • for NIR: from 14 000 to 4000 cm -1 General Param: • Initial Delay: 0 • Number of scans: 10 or more 6 Bomem-GRAMS User's Guide
Chapter 1 Quick Start File Name: Enter a file name (up to 144 characters). The program will automatically add the extension shown. Use Auto Gain: Select this option. Data type: %Trans Background: This should be the name of the background file enter in step 1 of Section 1.2. 3. Click OK Collect to begin data acquisition. During data acquisition the spectrum of each individual scan is displayed on the page. When all the spectra are acquired, the coadded spectrum is displayed and saved. 4. Observe the acquired spectrum. Figure 1-9 below shows an example of the transmittance spectrum of a polystyrene sample in the MIR range and the transmittance spectrum of a plastic bag in the NIR range. Figure 1-9.
