The vast majority of top women’s football<br />
leagues are managed by the national member<br />
association (82%). MAs also provide the<br />
majority of funds to run these competitions<br />
(64%). As shown in section 2, the smaller<br />
and less competitive the MAs, the greater the<br />
importance of national member associations<br />
in organising and financing the leagues.<br />
Sponsors also significantly contribute to the funding<br />
and organisation of top national women’s football<br />
leagues. Their relative contribution is greater than that of<br />
governments: 24% compared to 9%. The opposite holds<br />
true with regards to investment in women’s football in<br />
general (see pages 19 and 20). These findings highlight the<br />
fact that sponsors are mainly interested in funding<br />
elite football.<br />
