THE FORCE BEHIND THE FORCE
Volume 6, 6, Issue Issue 1 4
Hope everyone had a great holiday season.
-Chapter President’s Corner-
FROM THE DESK OF DON KELTNER
Page 2
Oktoberfest was fantastic, as usual. Thanks to Bob Kjar for the location and honoring Rip. Thanks to Colonel (CAP) Brooks
Cima, Texas Wing Commander, as the speaker. Learned a lot about the chapter’s 2013 emphasis – Civil Air Patrol and if you
didn’t notice, Colonel Cima was on her cell phone monitoring a real world search and rescue mission. The tribute to Rip was
much appreciated by everyone, especially Marilyn and Richard. Rip’s Library is on display at Det 003. UH AFROTC.
Don Keltner
President
WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA: WAA Houston’s deadline for the 2012 ceremony was November 20. At that time, SJC
was credited with 26 wreaths; $390 in donations. The wreath laying ceremony was December 15 th and was as impressive as
usual. Everyone showed up ready for rain and not a drop until it was all over. About 32,000 wreaths were placed, including one
on Rip’s grave marker in Section U. The chapter has voted to ensure Rip has a wreath each year through WAA.
I was particularly proud to have my Air Force Junior ROTC cadets asked to provide an honor guard for the four Medal of Honor
winners buried at the Houston National Cemetery. Those individuals are 1 st Lt James Fields, Army, World War II; S/Sgt Marcario
Garcia, Army, World War II; 1 st Lt Raymond Knight, Army Air Forces, World War II; 1 st Sgt David McNerney, Army, Vietnam
COMMUNITY PARTNERS: National and Texas AFA will be emphasizing the Community Partners program this coming year.
If you know of any business that could be a part of this program . . . go out and get ‘em. Bob Kjar has experience bringing them
in and I’ve got AFA brochures available for you to hand out.
CIVIL AIR PATROL: The emphasis for 2013 is the official USAF auxiliary – Civil Air Patrol. I encourage all the members to
seek out the CAP unit in their area and show that SJC supports them.
POSITION AVAILABLE IMMEDIATELY: Chapter Vice President. No heavy lifting / Set your own hours / Benefits are
intangible, but rewarding / No experience necessary; training provided.
THE RICHARD (RIP) COLLINS MEMORIAL LIBRARY
Rip Collins, our dedicated VP for Veterans Affairs and historian, left us in
2012. He was the last of our active World War II members. His legacy to
us is profound. We have established the ‘Rip’ Collins Memorial Library at
the University of Houston, Det003 AFROTC in the Garrison Room. You
can go by the Garrison Room and visit all his papers and memorabilia.
Any AFROTC cadet will take you to the Library. As most of his generation
was, Rip was one of a kind. Contact UH AFROTC at 713.743.4932/3707
for a tour of the Library. Contact them and LtCol Todd Aaron for any information
on the library.
New signs proclaiming the partnership between
AFA Houston, the University of Houston
AFROTC and the 147th Recon Wing at Ellington
Field brought in record revenues from
their brats, beer and nachos concession stand
at Wings over Houston. The 2 day event
grossed over $15,000.00. profits from the venture
are divided between the local AFA Chapter
TX233 and Detachment 003 UH AFROTC.
Homer Black and Mike Bradshaw were the
event coordinators. Joyce Remirg did the
heavy work. Their thanks go out to the 147th
RW for providing a great location on the flight
line, parking and passes for the event. Our
youthful cadets are the best fast food slingers
