TWO STEPS<br />
Standing at the bottom of a spiral staircase<br />
I weigh the risk of climbing to the chapel.<br />
It’s not fear of falling, but rather,<br />
dread of heightened pain,<br />
and simply not wanting to add liability<br />
to my sixty-year-old body.<br />
As I look up, bright light glistens.<br />
I follow, allow myself the luxury<br />
of going up two steps, where I can peer<br />
through glass panes.<br />
Below is green Maritime Forest.<br />
Beyond that, the ocean, the sky.<br />
