I am delighted to welcome you to The Auction
2014. This year we have some wonderful Lots
on offer and we are thrilled that tonight you
are showing your support for people living
with HIV.
HIV has always been a difficult cause for which
to raise money and it takes a special kind of
person to get involved and donate. Many people
are indifferent to the needs of people living
with HIV and are reluctant to support us - we
need you now more than ever before. The fact
that you are here tonight speaks volumes - we
are incredibly grateful.
At Terrence Higgins Trust we are committed to
getting as many people as possible with HIV
diagnosed and onto treatment. In the UK
around a quarter of people with HIV do not
know they have it and this group is driving
the majority of new infections. Early diagnosis
has two main benefits. People can access
treatment as soon as they need it - meaning
they can expect to live a near-normal lifespan
- and as a result they are unlikely to pass on
HIV. You can read more about our dynamic
approaches to HIV testing later on in the
catalogue.
I would like to take this opportunity to say
some very special thank you’s:

for Terrence Higgins Trust but for people living
with HIV in the UK. Your support means that we
can continue our efforts to reach and diagnose
those who are unaware of their HIV status. It
also means that we can keep providing support
to people who have been diagnosed with
HIV – whether soon after diagnosis or many
months or years later.

Preventing the spread of HIV
Every day 17 more people are diagnosed with HIV and thousands are infected but
are unaware of it. Through better testing, education and awareness – and with
your help - we can stop HIV in its tracks.

We have come a long way in 30 years but people with HIV still face serious issues
such as prejudice and discrimination. They still struggle to get the healthcare and
support they need. Here are the ways some of our successful lobbying campaigns
have helped:
• We successfully lobbied the Government
to relax the rules banning gay and
bisexual men from donating blood.
• We successfully campaigned to allow
everyone with HIV access to treatment
regardless of their immigration status.
We are currently campaigning for the
following changes:
• We want sex and relationship
education (SRE) to be on the curriculum
for all children. We believe that if SRE is
taught properly it can delay sexual
activity, reduce the number of people
students have sex with and increase use
of condoms and other contraceptives.
• We were thrilled when the Government
implemented an HPV vaccination
programme for teenage girls in a bid
to bring down cervical cancer rates.
But we believe boys should be included in
the programme as well. There is increasing
evidence of HPV-related head and neck
cancer, anal cancer and penile cancer in
men, as well as warts.

We are thrilled to offer exclusive limited edition prints donated by Turner Prize-winning artist
Anish Kapoor.
Influential sculptor Kapoor was born in 1954 in Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay). He has
lived in London since the early 1970s and was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in
2013. He won the coveted Turner Prize in 1991.
Kapoor’s works are commissioned the world over – from New York to New Zealand. In 2006 he
installed Sky Mirror - a 10 metre circular mirror made from polished stainless steel - outside
the Rockefeller Centre in New York.
Kapoor’s major permanent commissions include Dismemberment Site I (2003-2009) for The
Farm sculpture park, Kaipara Bay, New Zealand and Cloud Gate (2004) for the Millennium Park
in Chicago.
In 2012 Orbit, a commission with Cecil Balmond for the London Olympic Park, was completed.
This breathtaking sculpture – thought to be the tallest in the UK - consists of a continuous
looping lattice of tubular steel.
In between major commissions he has exhibited extensively over the past 30 years. In 2009
he was the first living artist to have a solo exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
Kapoor has represented Britain at the Paris Biennale in 1982 and at the Venice Biennale in
1990, where he was awarded the ‘Premio Duemila’.
He has been awarded prestigious accolades from the art world including Honorary Fellowships
by the London Institute and Leeds University (1997) and the Royal Institute of British
Architects (2001). He was elected Royal Academician in 1999. In 2011 he was awarded the
Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters in France and the Premium Imperiale in Japan.
We are incredibly grateful to Anish Kapoor and his team for their generosity and hard work in
producing Untitled for tonight’s auction.
The print is a polymer gravure type etching. Each impression is inked and printed by hand using a cast–iron
etching press on French BFK Rives naturel 280gsm paper.
The cardinal red and warm red inks are of a traditional kind, a suspension of pigment in linseed oil supplied
by Charbonnel of France.

Tracey Emin CBE, one of Britain’s most highly acclaimed contemporary artists, is famed for her
often controversial artworks. She explores a feminist discourse, sometimes using conventional
handicraft techniques for radical intent. For example in Everyone I’ve Ever Slept With 1963 -
1995 she used appliqué to list her lovers, friends and family in a small tent.
Her work is deeply personal and often explores uncomfortable and thought-provoking issues.
She produces monoprints, paintings and drawings and has exhibited all over the world -
including a major solo exhibition Love Is What You Want at the Hayward Gallery, London,
in 2011.
Tracey Emin: Angel Without You, the first exhibition ever to focus solely on Emin’s use of neon
ended a few days ago. It was held at the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, and was
the first American museum to dedicate an exhibition to Emin.

by David Collins, has been realised here in shades of blue - a colour very close to David in

upholstered in calfskin leather top dyed cerulean blue. The oak frame is finished in teal blue
japanned lacquer and the metalwork to the feet and studs is a polished brass.

David Collins passed away
in July 2013 following a
short battle with cancer.
David’s contribution to

world was immeasurable.

has donated unique and precious items of furniture in the past and it is in this spirit that his
Studio continues to support the charity.

David was a good friend to Terrence Higgins Trust. He had been involved with The Auction
since its very beginning in 1996 and had served on the organising Committee for a number
of years, as well as regularly contributing as a Lot donor. He was a member of the Terrence
Higgins Trust Friends Programme and a welcome guest at so many of our fundraising
galas - always charming, entertaining and, of course, impeccably dressed! He also enjoyed a
long association with both Crusaid and London Lighthouse before their eventual mergers with
Terrence Higgins Trust. His generosity, dedication and commitment will be missed by everyone
working to improve the lives of those living with HIV. We are truly grateful to have worked
with David over the years and to his Studio for their continued support today.

For some years Cornelia Parker’s work has been concerned with formalising things beyond our
control, containing the volatile and making it into something that is quiet and contemplative -
such as the ‘eye of the storm’. She is fascinated with processes in the world that mimic cartoon
‘deaths’ – steamrollering, shooting full of holes, falling from cliffs and explosions. Through a
combination of visual and verbal allusions her work triggers cultural metaphors and personal

photographic career
in the late 1970s
and quickly gained a
reputation as a master
of art and commercial
photography. Herb

Conceptual artist Ceal Floyer is celebrated for her deft manoeuvres in everyday situations.
Working in film and installation, she reconfigures familiar objects as sources of surprise and
humour. In Light (1994), for example, a solitary unconnected bulb is lit up from four sides by
slide projectors. In Stable (2008), the ubiquitous folded beer mat - often found wedging a
dodgy table leg - is called upon fourfold to bear the load of all four table legs.
Such adjustments in usage draw on an acute sense of the absurd, with an economy of
language that makes a powerful argument for beauty in the detail. Viewers are nudged to
double take and - on closer inspection - recognise a sparse kind of poetry. Floyer’s clarity of
thought and the elegantly concise presentation of her ideas resonate through all areas of her
practice. The deceptive simplicity of the work is informed by Floyer’s particular sense of
humour and an awareness of the absurd.

Dating from around 1860, black, ebonised, Milanese with bone/ivory inlays
Chairs: approximately 45 inches x 18 inches x 18 inches
Accompanying table: approximately 19 inches x 15 inches x 15 inches
Together with a small occasional table, the chairs are decorated throughout with geometrical
inlay and scrolling foliage. The backs are each centred by a clothed figure flanked by baluster
turned stiles, a solid seat and an H-stretcher.
Donated by the wonderful Richard O’Brien who tells us:
‘These four Milanese chairs were bought by me in 1998 while I was out looking for Christmas
gifts for others. Didn’t I get lucky
‘The dining room in my new house had wallpaper by Zuber and a green marble dining
table - all of which cried out for something equally exotic and wonderful in the sitting
down department.
‘They date from around 1860 and, although they are two pairs rather than a set of four, they
do fit together rather nicely. It is my fervent wish that whoever buys them will derive as much
pleasure from them as I have over my 16 years of ownership. They are bold, elegant and dare I
say it, rather sexy.
‘My only advice to the buyer is to choose the cushions with equal style and taste.’
Note on ivory inlays: a re-export permit from Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (AHVLA),
part of UK CITES Management Authority, will be required should the Buyer decide to move the Lot outside
of the European Union.

Artist Marc Hagan-Guirey - otherwise known as ‘Paper Dandy’ - describes himself as a
‘paper architect’. Using single pieces of A4 paper - and no glue - he is famed for creating
sculptures of buildings based on locations from cult horror movies.
Presented within light boxes, by night the silhouetted paper sculptures appear as spectral and
ethereal as the buildings on screen. By day, the works exist in their pure white and tangible
forms – displaying an innocent and simple beauty and highlighting their physical construction.
As a long-term supporter of Terrence Higgins Trust, Hagan-Guirey has created this special

Hodgkin’s paintings and prints
often refer to memories and
private experiences, but

figurative. Since the 1950s,

Home is one of a group of small etchings the artist made from 2000-2001 at 107 Workshop
in Wiltshire. It is a classic composition of the artist’s oeuvre, built-up using layer upon layer of
printed and hand-painted colour, finished with the motif that echoes the hand-painted frames
which surround many of the paintings.

which is affecting the lives of thousands.
It is estimated that around 25,000 people in
Britain are living with HIV but don’t know it.
Over the last few years Terrence Higgins Trust
has single-mindedly focused on getting
as many people as possible, from the
communities most affected by HIV in the UK,
to regularly test for HIV.
The majority of people who get HIV in the
UK get it from someone who does not know
that they have the virus. Because they do not
know their HIV status, they have not been
given the opportunity to start treatment -
and in many cases may be highly infectious.
Through initiatives such as National HIV
Testing Week we have worked more closely
than ever before with our partners in the
NHS, local government and the community to
increase the number of tests and find those
living with HIV who are as yet undiagnosed.
Our community testing services already run
weekly clinics in places where we can find
people from the communities most at risk
of HIV. We go to saunas, gay clubs, African
churches, barber shops and even run football
tournaments to reach African men. We have
developed the first national postal HIV testing
service and in 2013 sent out over 10,000 test
kits. We know that the more people who test
for HIV and get on to treatment, the fewer
people will be infectious.
Reaching out to the undiagnosed population
is a big task. We have to work together with
community testing services and sexual health
clinics. We have to overcome stigma and
encourage people to test regularly. We have
to develop new, more convenient and cheaper
ways of testing for HIV and be there to
support people when they are diagnosed.
The bottom line is that the more people with
HIV who get on treatment, the fewer people
will be infectious - and fewer people will be
infected. But changing attitudes to HIV
testing and persuading people to test -
so that those who need to start treatment
can - is a huge task. We cannot do it on
our own, that is why we need you to join
us and support our efforts to stop the spread
of HIV.

Conditions of Sale
1. Christie’s acts as agent for Terrence Higgins
Trust. Unless otherwise agreed, the sale of the
Lots will result in contracts made between
Terrence Higgins Trust and the Buyer.
2. The Buyer shall be the person with the highest
bid accepted by the Auctioneer.
3. The Auctioneer has the right to refuse any bid
and to advance the bidding at his absolute
discretion, and in the case of error or dispute,
to put up an item for bidding again.
4. Statements by Terrence Higgins Trust in
the catalogue or made orally or in writing
elsewhere, regarding the authorship, origin,
date, size, medium, attribution, genuineness,
provenance, condition or estimated selling
price of any Lot are merely statements of
opinion, and are not to be relied upon as
statements of definitive fact. Neither Christie’s
nor Terrence Higgins Trust are responsible for
the correctness of any such statement nor for
any other errors of description or for any faults
or defects in any Lots. Catalogue illustrations
are for guidance only.
5. Buyers are responsible for satisfying
themselves concerning the condition of goods
and the matters referred to in the catalogue
description.
6. If a prospective Buyer gives Christie’s or
Terrence Higgins Trust instructions to bid on
their behalf, they shall use all reasonable
efforts to do so, provided these instructions
are received no later than 24 hours before
the sale. Bids should be placed in pounds
sterling. If bids are received on a particular Lot
for identical amounts, and at auction these
bids are the highest bids for the Lot, it will be
sold to the person whose bid was received first.
7. If prospective Buyers make arrangements
with Christie’s or Terrence Higgins Trust not
less than 24 hours before the sale, Christie’s
shall make reasonable efforts to contact the
bidders to enable them to participate by
telephone, but in no circumstances will
Christie’s or Terrence Higgins Trust be liable to
any prospective Buyer as a result of failure
to do so.
8. Subject to the Auctioneer’s discretion, the
striking of the hammer marks the acceptance
of the highest bid and the conclusion of a
contract for sale between Terrence Higgins
Trust and the Buyer.
9. Following the sale, the Buyer must provide
Terrence Higgins Trust with his or her name,
permanent address, contact number and
e-mail address.
10. All Lots are to be paid for in full on the night
of the sale at the Payment Desk.
11. All Lots are to be collected by the Buyer on
the night of the sale, but no Lot can be taken
unless it has first been paid for in full. The
Buyer will not acquire title to the Lot until
amounts due to Terrence Higgins Trust have
been paid in full. From the time of collection,
the Lot will be entirely at the Buyer’s risk.
Charges in relation to delivery of Lots which
are not taken on the night are the
responsibility of the Buyer.
12. Payment can be made in cash, by credit card
or by cheque made payable to Terrence Higgins
Trust. A surcharge of 1.5 per cent will be
charged on all MasterCard and Visa card
payments. A surcharge of 0.5 per cent will be
charged on all American Express card
payments. There is no surcharge on debit
card payments.
13. Terrence Higgins Trust makes every effort to
ensure the availability of every Lot. However,
very occasionally, due to unforeseen
circumstances, a Lot may no longer be possible.
In those circumstances Terrence Higgins Trust
will work with the Buyer to substitute the Lot
with one of commensurate worth.
14. These Conditions of Sale are subject to English
law, which shall apply to their construction
as well as to their effect. For Christie’s benefit,
Terrence Higgins Trust and the Buyer submit to
the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts.
