globalization, the transnationalization promoted by the transnational corporations<br />

and the agreements on free trade designed to support imperial<br />

interests.<br />

To crown our efforts, we must specify everything that challenges the<br />

culture of world peace and the counter-culture of imperial warfare, which<br />

has been loosed upon the whole planet. We must commit ourselves to<br />

peace, which is the product of international social justice or we shall destroy<br />

humanity.<br />

By way of conclusion<br />

My aim has been to describe some aspects of the positions and declarations<br />

of the organized movement of workers, which converge with<br />

the theses contained in Houtart’s valuable work. The importance of the<br />

text should be stressed because of its pluralist approach and the basic<br />

ideology of its theses.<br />

In the various interventions that I have made in the World Social Forum,<br />

as representative of the World Confederation of Labour, as well as of<br />

the International Trade Union Confederation, particularly its International<br />

Council, I said that while we did not share the declaration about the end<br />

of history (as an expression of the triumph of capitalism over communism)<br />

or the end of ideologies (as an expression of the ‘final’ triumph of<br />

neo-liberal capitalism), we must nevertheless recognize the end of dogmatism.<br />

No one, in social, political, economic and cultural terms, has the<br />

absolute truth. We must be capable of constructing a new world society<br />

based on the supremacy of work over capital, the centrality of the human<br />

person, ecological and socially sustainable development and universal<br />

social justice. We must also acknowledge the pluralism that exists between<br />

the different strata of society that reject capitalism/neo-li b eralism<br />

(the 99 per cent).<br />

Defining as an objective the construction of a universal common good<br />

and the proposal to promote a Universal Declaration of the Common<br />
