All these themes respond to the immediate needs of workers. Hence,<br />

in its decision to change globalization, the ITUC declared that its priorities<br />

for 2012 included the following:<br />

� intensifying its efforts to avoid a new recession and achieve greater<br />

recovery of jobs, maintaining close ties with its work and the Rio+20<br />

perspectives<br />

� continuing to work with the international financial institutions to ensure<br />

that they give priority to issues of inequality and employment and<br />

turn the high-level declarations into effective changes at the national<br />

level;<br />

� promoting the establishment of floors for social protection in all countries<br />

of the world;<br />

� supporting the creation of a tax on financial transactions and protecting<br />

workers who are currently in precarious employment;<br />

� launching a campaign, together with ILO’s Bureau for Workers’ Activities,<br />

to defend the minimum wage;<br />

� reinforcing the network of the political economy to contribute to social<br />

and economic development through the Global Jobs Pact.<br />

An exceptional testimony<br />

To illustrate the positions of trade-union leaders on the perspectives developed<br />

in the document on the Common Good of Humanity, we asked<br />

the opinion of Rodolfo Romero, former Assistant Secretary of the Latin<br />

American Confederation of Workers (CLAT) and leaders of the Organization<br />

of Workers in Education of Paraguay, Rodolfo Romero. 125<br />

125 Rodolfo Romero (better known as RoRo) was the director of the Institute of Social<br />

Training for the South (INCASUR) of the University of Latin American Workers (UTAL)<br />

and Assistant Secretary General of the CLAT. He is now adviser to various Latin American<br />

trade union organizations, including the Unión Nacional de Educadores (UNE) of<br />
