Appetite For Deception, a Guns ‘n Roses tribute band

Looking back at August, I have some mixed feelings. 

I had great fun, but also a sad reminder 

of someone very special that we lost on August 

18, 2008. 

This year marked the fourth anniversary 

to the untimely death of local musician and friend, 

JOE SHIKANY.

(AKA: The Knit) 

in Spokane on Friday, August 10. Friends of mine 

in an original progressive rock band from Moscow, 

Idaho called VIAL 8 opened for a GUNS N' ROSES 

tribute band from Portland by the name of APPE- 

TITE FOR DECEPTION. 

There were just the two bands on the bill, but 

trust me, everybody got their money's worth of great 

music. I've been a big fan of VIAL 8 ever since I first 

saw them perform. 

It would be well worth your time to go online to 

"www.vial8.net" and check out their original songs 

and purchase the CD "Lucky 13". 

I had been hearing a lot of good things about AP- 

PETITE FOR DECEPTION so I was very anxious to 

check them out. If you are a GUNS N' ROSES fan, 

you really gotta go see these guys. I didn't expect 

anything too special, but was pleasantly surprised. 

The bass guitarist looks so much like Duff McKagan 

that I had to do a double take when they hit 

the stage. The front man of the band has Axl Rose's 

moves nailed down perfectly, and did a great job on 

the vocals. As a matter of fact, the entire band is 

very talented. They played about a two-hour set, and 

their high energy performance held up to the end. I 

really look forward to seeing them again. Go online

Magazine. Hopefully you're enjoying 

the Summer as we forge 

into September and gear up the 

kiddos to start school, and we 

adults can begin planning our 

karaoke date nights. 

I want to expose an issue 

that has affected me recently, 

and is a stark reminder of how 

people are not always good at 

heart. I am a trusting soul, and I 

usually feel safe leaving my keys, 

phone, and other personal items 

with, or near friends at 

pretty much any venue we visit. 

Just the other night, surrounded 

by many familiar and 

trusted faces, my phone was 

snatched right off of my table 

when no one was looking. Luckily, 

we were in a place that had 

surveillance, so security was 

able to quickly apprehend the 

lady, yes I said lady, who took 

my phone, pocketed it and gave it 

away to a girlfriend of hers. Her 

friend took my phone home with 

her, but just three hours later, 

with the help of the law, we were 

able to recover my phone.

Birthday 

Billy Idol 


What started out as one 

man's dream, is now turning 

into his reality. 

Michael Henrichsen of Se- 

attle, WA decided two years ago 

that his ultimate dream birthday 

present would be to have 

Billy Idol play a show for his own 

personal birthday party. 

He's the kind of guy that 

doesn't take no for an answer, 

who won't let anyone tell him 

that he can't accomplish something, 

no matter how big or 

small. His determination lead 

him down a path that could 

have gone nowhere, but instead 

is actually coming to fruition on 

October 26, 2012. 

With the help of his friends, 

Michael petitions publicly to have Billy Idol play his birthday 

Michael created a Web site: 

www.playmybirthdaybillyidol. 

com. His friends and colleagues 

began a two-year long campaign 

to make this dream come true. 

They stood on corners with 

signs, held rallies in Seattle, 

enlisted the help of celebrities 

like Nick Cannon, Kevin Nealon, 

Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath, 

Apolo Ohno, Jay Buhner, and 

many others to record video messages 

to Billy Idol. 

Michael realized that in order 

to get Billy's attention, he'd 

have to go big. Do something for 

the good of the community, for 

the good of others. A believer 

in karma, he developed a band, 

which he himself fronted, named 

"Nite Wave". They began playing 

benefit shows for the Red Cross, 

and for Northwest Harvest, accumulating 

over $7,000 in donations 

and over 400 lbs. of food!

2012 Oyster Run is scheduled 

for Sunday, September 

The 

23. What is the Oyster Run 

This is the largest motorcycle 

event in the Pacific Northwest, 

currently enjoying it's 

31st year in existence. 

The Oyster Run ends 

in Anacortes, WA, but it begins wherever 

you decide to start from. There's no specific 

start place or time, everyone just ends up 

in Anacortes. The idea is to pick your own 

route and support biker-friendly locations 

along the way. 

Although the run is a one-day event, 

many people make an entire weekend of it. 

Live music, vendors, motorcycles, and more 

motorcycles. Thousands of people flock the 

main drag in Anacortes and party all day 

long. 

It all started 

one day back in 1981 

when a few guys got 

together at the end 

of Summer to go for 

a ride and eat some 

oysters. Limp Lee 

gathered some biker 

buddies and they 

took their ride from 

the California Tavern 

in Marysville, 

and headed up Hwy 9, ending up in Edison 

the first year. The next year, the group had 

grown, and by the fourth year there were 

over 200 bikes along for the ride! 

As the years passed, they came to 

realize that there were too many people to 

organize a group ride up Hwy 9, so Limp 

Lee talked to the city of Anacortes about 

taking the group there. At first, the town 

seemed a little intimidated, and a lot of the 

shops closed up as the bikers arrived. But 

over time, more and more business owners 

stayed open, welcoming the group. And the 

rest is history, as they say!

Finalists converged on the Golden Steer Steak and 

Rib House on Kent’s East Hill Saturday, August 11 

for their Progressive Karaoke Contest wrap-up. 

Golden Steer’s Karaoke Host for two decades, 

Candy Crummett, introduced a brand new concept 

to the karaoke community when she rolled out her unique Progressive 

contest three months ago. She invited area singers and karaoke 

fanatics to enter a singing competition 

like none other. 

Every Saturday night, between 9:30pm 

and midnight, singers are welcome to enter 

and qualify for the big winner-take-all 

culmination. It was then that Candy’s Progressive 

Karaoke Contest put on display, a 

19-singer sing-off, and a whale of a show! 

Owner Jim Berrios offered up 5% 

of all bar sales toward the final payout, 

which when added to the $200 Added,

worked out to “$560.18, because I’m an 

honest guy,” he says. Later seen in the

Orion blew away the competition 

midst of line dancers, crowding 

the humongous dance floor, Jim 

seemed to appreciate the music, 

and company alike. 

Candy’s sweet sound system 

is flanked by giant stacks of 

Peavey speakers, so wherever 

you parked yourself, the music 

would sound amazing. One of 

Golden Steer’s regular singers, 

and Finalists, Jeff Sawyer, says 

this is his favorite spot for the 

sound quality. In fact, after 

his finals song; A Day In The 

Life, he ended with a little PSA 

(Public Service Announcement) 

of his own, directed toward the 

goodwill of people. 

There were so many performers 

in that bar! This was the 

lineup for the evening’s entertainment, 

a lineup designed to impress 

a highly critical audience.

finished at the top. In the end, 

Chris T.; aka, Orion, and his 

unbelievably soulful scatting 

around Moondance would tie 

for first place with Shawn J’s 

Celo Green hit F*** You. Both of 

these, and many others, turned 

in an A+ performance that night. 

The Golden Steer came alive, 

and Candy was happy to oblige. 

Orion and Shawn decided to just 

split the $560.18 pot, although 

I would have enjoyed an encore. 

Congratulations to Orion and 

Shawn on their victory among 

such a tough group of competitors. 

Thanks to everyone who showed 

up to qualify and compete. 

It was good times at the 

Golden Steer that night for sure, 

but you can catch some great karaoke 

every Friday through Monday 

with the fabulous Candy.

Just as the contest finished, 

Candy announced that effective 

immediately, they were kicking 

off their newest karaoke contest. 

Also a Progressive Payout, this 

time they will have the contest 

on Friday nights instead, and 

the winner will take 70% of the 

pot, while the runner-up will get 

a 30% cut too! So get yourself out

receptive and generous with applause. One by one the singers took to 

the center of the room, mic in hand, and gave it all they had. 

The appointed judges, Chris, Dena, and Laura scored each 

singer on vocals, stage presence, song selection, etc., but rather 

than tally up separate scores, they merely huddled together after 

each performance and came up 

with a consensus score between 

1-10. A bit unconventional, but it 

seemed to work well.

The Yucatan Mexican Restaurant and 

Cantina in Mill Creek has always been an 

active provider of karaoke. 

Recently, Karaoke Host Christine, now 

just three months into her new gig, offered 

up an exciting karaoke contest for her singers 

to compete and win. Just a one-night affair, 

Saturday, August 18, Christine invited 

karaoke enthusiasts to sing two songs, and 

hopefully be voted as the winner, making 

them a hundred bucks richer. 

Six singers competed, including Russ, Elmer, 

Allison, Laura, Mike, Shane, and Cheryl. 

The mood was light and festive, the crowd

Contest Winners

Yet another karaoke contest 

at Pacific Lanes Bowl in Tacoma 

has come to an exciting finish, 

but the real winners were the 

large audience that showed up 

in support. 

Frank lands himself a 1st Place 

We were treated to some 

very impressive talent spanning 

multiple decades and genres. 

Pacific Lanes Karaoke Host 

Jodee Shrock conducted an efficient 

show, offering encouragement 

to each singer. 

An enraptured audience 

enjoyed the many drink specials 

served up by a gracious and accomodating 

staff. Fresh and tasty 

dinners flowed into the bar from 

a busy kitchen, and the music 

flowed out of the bar into a busy 

bowling alley. 

The karaoke contest was 

finally coming to a close, giving 

all those that had qualified a 

chance to show off their talents 

and win some extra money. 

This go-round, Jodee’s contest 

attracted an entirely new set 

of singers, many new to the bar. 

She was glad to meet some new 

people who shared her passion 

for karaoke. 

After everyone had an opportunity 

to put forth their best 

efforts, it was all up to the attending 

judge’s panel. 

Congratulations to these 

performers who landed on top: 

Frank took 1st Place ($100), 

singing “Geogia”, a fabulous 

tribute to Ray Charles. 

Jeff came in a close 2nd 

Place ($75), singing “A Change 

Is Gonna Come”. 

July followed up in 3rd Place 

($50) with her “Not Ready To 

Make Nice”. 

George landed 4th Place 

($25) with "Lady".

Michael at the Aid-4 event stating 

that he would be coming 

to Seattle and playing his 

birthday party this

journey. He told

me it's been a whirlwind since he got the 

news, it's been surreal. He's done many interviews, 

as many as six in one day! Mostly 

radio, and some TV. He's very humble and 

excited this has all become a reality. 

I asked what his next big goal was and 

he said he wanted to pay off his student 

loans. It's impressive that he raised so much 

money and food and gave it all away to good 

causes, when he works three jobs supporting 

himself alone. He wanted to make sure his 

friends, colleagues and work places got credit 

for all of this too. Seattle Weekly, 

Silvertips, and Puma the retail 

store, he thanks you for your massive 

support and understanding. 

Michael believes that networking 

is the key to great things, and has 

proved his theory. 

It turns out that Michael 

is also a big karaoke 

singer too. In fact, he 

follows Sandra Dee’s 

Positive Promotions 

wherever they go. 

I asked him why 

it was so important to 

have Billy Idol play for 

his birthday - why that 

day His answer caught 

me off guard, he said he'd noticed 

over the years how friends 

and family had begun drifting 

away, moving to other states, other countries, 

getting married, living different lives. And 

being the consummate socialite, he realized 

he missed them and wanted to get them all 

together again somehow. What better way 

than to have Billy Idol play your birthday! 

A huge lifetime dream achieved, for all his 

friends and family to witness and enjoy! 

When the big day arrives, we will be 

there to get his reaction and report on how 

it all went down. 

Congratulations Michael, it's amazing 

what one man with a dream can accomplish. 

Michael says, "don't ever, ever let anyone, 

ever tell you you can not accomplish something!"

I was forced 

to walk around 

naked all day long. 

It’s so effin’ HOT! 

I’ve been away. Spent all of last month 

running around naked at Wreck Beach in 

Canada. That was hot! Hot, naked bodies 

running around with me. There were 

also some not-so-hot naked bodies running 

around too. 

If you’re brave enough to run around 

naked on a hot summer day, and you want 

to “hang out” somewhere nobody knows 

you, head up to Wreck Beach, Vancouver, 

Canada. Be forewarned, there are something 

like 500 effin’ stairs leading down to the 

beach, and you still have to climb back up 

at the end of the day. Google it. 

On another note, I want to thank Chris 

Avis for his comments pertaining to my last 

submission, "Play My Disk Please". Good 

advise, and your ethics are above board. To 

sum it up, Chris will play your CDGs, but 

not burned ones, and no USB tracks. See the

Thanks again, Chris. Its nice to run into 

someone such as yourself who has the balls 

to respond. And I use that term metaphorically, 

in the unisex-sense when it comes to 

courage. All my girl’s got balls! Wait... I 

mean... nevermind, you get the picture. 

We also got some interesting comments 

in response to the Sex and Karaoke piece a 

couple months back. Maybe you just don’t 

have the balls to tell your lover they’re boring 

in bed! 

Enough catching up, let’s talk about 

singing and sex - I mean, singing and dancing! 

Sheesh, Freudian slip. 

They are the same though, if you think 

about it. Dancing has always been a catalyst 

for sex. It’s very sexual and tawdry using 

our bodies, writhing around on the dance 

floor. Good dancers are nearly always good 

lovers. They just have that sexy charisma 

that stirs people up. 

I have gone to so many effin’ shows, 

and everybody deals with the karaoke and 

dancing differently. Some will have absolute 

dead silence while the next singer takes the 

painfully long and awkward march up to the

microphone. Others might play a little music, 

or better yet, music videos while they wait 

for the singer to get to the stage. 

I’ve even been to shows where the KJ 

plays like two or three whole songs between 

singers! That’s just ridiculous! Nobody 

should be playing two or three effin’ songs 

between singers. 

That said, what is your take on this, 

both from a KJ and a Singer’s perspective 

Should a KJ play a dance track all the 

way through to the end if a bunch of people 

get up and fill the dance floor Or is it more 

important to respect the singers in the rotation 

and get them up as quickly as possible 

The way I see it, there are four points 

of view to consider here: #1) The karaoke 

singers, #2) The non-karaoke singers who 

enjoy watching their friends sing, but will 

get up and shake their hips, #3) Those who 

don't sing or dance, they just prefer to watch, 

and finally #4) From the perspective of the 

location owner, who wants their bar full of 

shiny, happy people who will drink and party 

the night away. 

So there’s your challenge for the week, 

give us your opinion on this one. Maybe 

you’re a singer who doesn’t dance, or a 

dancer who doesn’t sing. Hell, maybe you’re 

the damn KJ! Which do you prefer 

Would it piss you off as a singer, if the 

KJ played two or three songs in between 

singers for those who really want to dance 

How about when you’re just hangin’ out with 

your friends, a killer song or music video 

comes on, and you finally get up to dance, 

only to be cut off by somebody who wants to 

sing a friggin’ karaoke song Dammit!

Alisa, and then to Lisa, who kept 

the bar singing into the morning 

hours. Karaoke at the Thunderbird 

is an experience like 

none other. They’ve created an 

on-stage ambiance that singers 

can appreciate, not to mention 

a sound system that rocks the 

place to the core.

Wednesday, August 1st was the final 

installment of this year’s big Summer Lovin’ 

Karaoke Contest spanning all three of the 

Boyd’s popular locations. 

Bursting at the seams, the Hitchin’ 

Post, like the others, was completely packed 

from end to end with singers and supporters 

for the grand finale. Eleven singers were 

expected to compete, singing one song each, 

chasing the cash payout of $500. There would 

be but one winner on 

this day. The rest 

would live to compete 

another day.

The room went quiet just as she announced 

the winner of Summer Lovin’ 2012 and $500

Skippy jumped in with At This Moment, 

Jeff W. ignited the crowd with It’s Alright,

Arms Tonight. 

Each performance was special in it’s 

own way, but many were extraordinary, 

including (in my humble opinion) Z-man, 

Josh O., Jesse, Jeff W., and Jeff M. While the 

judges conspired to choose that one 

singer that stands above the rest, the 

bar staff continued to serve up $2.50 Coors 

Lights, plus their signature cocktails, and 

tasty menu items with a great big smile. 

After tabulating the results, including 

that 10-point “Regular Patron” bonus, the big 

winner was acknowledged, and the results 

cash; none other than… Jeff W! The audience 

exploded with applause and adulation. Jeff 

was truly surprised to hear his name called, 

humbled in front of his peers. 

Jeff’s performance of It’s Alright was an 

amazing display of talent and voice control. 

His comfort behind the mic and on stage 

worked to his favor. He electrified the entire 

bar with his act that night and walked away 

with an extra five-hundred bucks!. 

Excellent job to Jeff W. and the rest of 

the Summer Lovin’ Finalists!

After weeks of qualifiers, 

U.P. Station’s 

Karaoke Host, 

Tony, and a 

host of judges 

along the way, 

chose these incredible 

finalists 

to go head 

to head. The 

best of which 

will walk away 

five-hundred 

bucks richer!

The anxiety in 

the room was 

electric, and 

folks chatted 

away furiously. 

Old friends and 

family gathered 

for a singer’s 

showdown sure to satisfy. 

The quality of talent in this place 

was off the charts. Gloria, Sarah, 

Laura, Jimmy, Eddie, and Lorrie 

were hyped up and anxious to 

get their turn on the mic. Each 

of these Finalists had given a 

considerable amount of thought 

to their final song selection that 

night. After all, every decision, 

every move, was potentially 

worth $500 cash! 

Finally, warm-ups were done 

and Tony brought up the Finalists 

one at a time. Every singer 

brought their best that night, and 

of course, there were a few stand-

outs for sure. After the final judges 

marks were tallied, a couple of my 

favorites didn’t even make the top 

two. Tony announced a first place 

tie between Jimmy and Eddie. 

Both felt pretty good about their 

first performance and hoped to be 

named champion. But first, they 

would have to choose another song 

and go head-to-head in a final 

sing-off.

Hard Luck Bar’s karaoke contestants line up hoping to get 

the news they’ve been waiting for after a spirited performance 

were Karen, Galen, 

Annette, Frank, 

Daddy Rich, Phil, 

Justin, Mike, and local 

legend, Alabama, 

who is a beloved mentor 

to many of the 

area’s best karaoke 

singers. 

Everybody was 

all warmed up and 

itching to take the 

stage. Several judges 

scattered around the room sat at the ready. 

The singers would be judged primarily on 

their vocal ability, of course, but also on audience 

reaction and interaction, song selection 

and knowledge, appearance, stage presence, 

and something new, whether or not they are 

a regular patron of the bar. 

Anyone considered to be a regular patron, 

automatically gets a ten-point boost, 

which could easily push them over the top, 

and into the winner’s position. There were no 

complaints from the traveling competitors, 

they knew they would have to rise to the 

challenge and simply overcome the deficit. 

And a couple of them did just that! 

One by one, the chosen nine turned in 

a fabulous performance they hoped worthy 

of being selected to receive the five-hundred 

dollar prize. While the judges collaborated 

in the corner, Mika, Blue, and Andrea filled 

the bar with their booty-shakin’ version of 

Call Tyrone.

forming The Allstar lip sync family. The 

impact it had on entertainment in the 80’s 

and 90’s was huge. He also introduced the 

first DK karaoke system to Seattle, at the 

Seattle Center House.

Craig had a real passion for life, and 

for entertainment. He recognized special 

talents in people and fostered those gifts. 

He did the tough-love thing, like a parent 

would do. Everyone would talk about how 

we, in the music field, were underpaid for 

our work, but I really believe he did that to 

teach us our value. We would learn to know 

our value and develop the ability to negotiate 

in business dealings.

Leaving a small carbon footprint was 

important to him, he had a passion for electric 

cars and solar energy. Craig operated 

under the rule, “Why buy it if you can build 

it” He was innovative and had a creative 

solution for most technical needs.

He enjoyed the Simpsons, and had one of 

the largest collections in the world. He loved 

Krispy Crème donuts and a great barbecue 

sauce. I would get a call every November 

from Craig asking, “Are the molasses cookies 

ready yet” My answer was the same 

every year, “Not ‘til Christmas”. He would 

say, “Extra frosting please!” We had this 

conversation every year since 1990.

One of the first lessons Craig taught me 

was to “Get it in writing”. I attribute a huge 

part of my direction and success in business 

to his mentoring and friendship. I am blessed 

to have had him in my life and will do my best 

to carry on his passion for discovering and 

developing new talent. Craig influenced so 

many people’s careers and touched so many 

lives, that his presence will be felt for many 

generations of entertainers to come.

We, his friends, family, and lip sync 

community will miss being able to pick up 

the phone and call Craig for the solutions to 

our problems, large or small. We will miss

recession” Most would say 

yes. In the past decade we 

have seen the drinking laws 

get tougher, a smoking ban 

inside public places, and 

a general economic slowdown 

in the entertainment business. 

If you look around, there is still live entertainment 

going on. Mostly bands playing 

for the door, or karaoke and DJ’s at $150 a 

night, but it does exist. 

As entertainers, are we thinking about 

the consumer, or the art The consumers of 

live entertainment are filling certain venues. 

These are the bands and locations that have 

established themselves in the market. Lately, 

I have seen new cover bands come on the 

scene, and through innovation, and the use of 

all the tools available to them, they’ve carved 

themselves a respectable piece of the market, 

despite the established venue’s success. 

Most of these bands have members that 

have “been around the block” and understand 

that you must evolve or die as a band. 

Some musicians are not willing to evolve, 

and continue to chase their glory days. which 

has it’s place, but if you are really doing what 

you love, then why worry about the money, 

right Why not just play for fun

not, your business is about to close it’s doors 

and disappear for good, and go the way of 

those that have gone before, without the 

capability to adapt to a changing business 

climate. Furthermore, rapt attention must 

be paid to your consumer’s wants and needs, 

lest you shrivel up and wither away. 

I pose this question: “Are we in an entertainment 

recession, or are we simply not 

ready to evolve as musicians” 

I talk to bands everyday that want a 

shot, but strictly by their own terms. You 

don’t go to work and tell your employer how 

you’re going to do the job! You do the job the 

way they want you to. 

Entertainers need to view their work 

just as they would a regular job. It can be 

the best job ever, but it can also be the most 

frustrating. 

Have you asked yourself, “Am I doing 

this for fun, or for the money” There is no 

wrong answer here, it’s a choice that we need 

to make if we expect to make a living at it. 

Are you playing for the enjoyment of others, 

or for yourself Only those musicians willing 

to evolve and adapt to an ever-changing 

market driven by the consumer’s wants rather 

than our own, will survive and prosper.
