4-H Grown Giants Submitted by Dorothy Shier There were a whopping 153 entries exhibiting in 22 different categories at the Pefferlaw Peat Products Inc. 4-H Achievement and Open House. 4-H Members and Georgina-Brock youth came together on September 25th for a record breaking day. Two 4-H Garden Club Members broke records. The Tallest Corn at 18’4’’ was grown by Katelynn Crawford beating the 17’record. The tallest Sunflower at 15’ 91/2” was grown by Daniel Shier breaking the record of 12’ 31/2“. This year was the first we had Heaviest Squash, Heaviest Marrow, Heaviest Field Pumpkin, and Longest Gourd. The Achievement Day was a great success showing all the hard 4-H work done during this growing season. Dorothy Shier is a 30+ year Durham West 4-H Volunteer. See photos of the Club on page 20. Lanark 4-H’rs Visit Alberta Submitted by Jessica Savard Over the course of the summer, 15 4-H Members and two chaperones from Lanark 4-H participated in an exchange with the Ponoka and Rimbey Alberta 4-H Beef Clubs. We went to Alberta from July 9 - 17. Our “twins” showed us around the West Edmonton Mall and Drumheller. In Drumheller, we climbed the World’s Largest Dinosaur, visited The Royal Tyrell Museum and the Little Church. We also spent a full day at the Calgary Stampede where we watched the rodeo, chuck wagon races and the grandstand show “Volte”. We then went camping at the David Thompson Resort in Banff. We visited Lake Peyto and hiked at Lake Louise. We rode the Gondola up the Rocky Mountains and soaked in the hot springs. The trip went by so fast and before we knew it we were saying goodbye to Alberta and all our new friends. The Alberta Group came to Ontario from August 18 - 26. While here, we took them to the Lanark County Plowing Match to see the 4-H Plowing Club’s achievement day. We travelled to Montreal where we visited the Olympic Tower, the Biodome, the Botanical Gardens and the Insectatarium. Another day, we visited Upper Canada Village in Morrisburg. The group was shown some highlights of Lanark County such as the Pakenham Five Span Bridge, Stewart Park, and the RCMP Breeding Farm. We travelled to Fulton’s Pancake House for a pancake dinner and square dancing. We took them to Ottawa and toured Parliament Hill, the Byward Market and made a stop at the 4-H Canada head office. Then we improved our teambuilding skills while dragon boating on the Rideau Canal! A farewell pool party was held for the Alberta group before they left for home. The whole experience went by really fast but was lots of fun and we will always have the memories and lifelong friendships we made. Jessica Savard is a Lanark 4-H Member who has completed over 18 projects. Shakin’ It Up! Submitted by Angela Miller In 1996 Prince Edward 4-H purchased its first Milk Shake Booth to help fundraise for 4-H activities. When the booth started showing signs of age in 1999, 4-H Leader June Longhurst and her husband Bryce sold the Association a new, but used, milk shake booth for the steep price of $1. The Milk Shake Booth is a great fundraising tool; a 50% share of profits is put toward Club projects. In addition to raising funds, the booth also helps Members and Volunteers learn to do by doing. Volunteers and Members operate the Milkshake Booth and while doing so they develop skills including: team work, time management, relationship building, confidence building, and communication. This year, the Milk Shake Booth started to show signs of age after 12 years of service. Prince Edward 4-H Association knew they needed a new Milk Shake booth. With an enormous amount of support from the community and hard work from Volunteers and Members, the dream became a reality. A very special thank you to our community businesses and service organizations and to all the purchasers of 4-H milk shakes and ice cream cones for the past 16 years. IN BRIEF provincial stories Believing In A Dream Robin and Connie Parish are proud parents who wish to share their son Justin’s dream of one day showing at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair (RAWF). The awe and spectacle of walking into the Royal for the first time is a feeling they wish to give other 4-H dairy Members. Robin and Connie were honoured to present Leeds Association 4-H Member Brittany Carkner with the inaugural Justin Parish Memorial Bursary at the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. “I was absolutely honoured when I found out I was selected. I had a great time at the Royal and hope that the Parish family was proud I was the Member to be selected,” said Brittany reflecting of her first time at the RAWF. The Parish family was indeed happy with the outcome of the bursary. “The end result of the bursary was far greater than we ever anticipated. We were thrilled to meet the Carkner family. You could tell they were thrilled to be there. That was important to us. Brittany is a wonderful young lady, someone who is dedicated and hardworking and just didn’t quite make it to the show. Brittany shares Justin’s passion for 4-H,” explains Robin. The $500 bursary supported Brittany, a Member of the Lyn Dairy Club, in attending the Royal in Toronto, Ontario. She received the bursary on the nomination of her Club Leaders Brenda and Sam Dunster. “This young lady is a very dedicated 4-H member who demonstrated her passion for 4-H through ‘Learn To Do By Doing’. As a Leader, when Brittany is asked to do that something extra I know it will be done with a sense of pride and determination on a ‘job well done’,” read Brenda and Sam’s nomination letter. “If the experience of attending the Royal even adds the slightest impact on Brittany to go with her through her life it would all be worth it. That kind of experience can have an impact to give youth an initiative that will stay with them for the rest of their life. The best part is we get to do this every year.” said Robin. The Justin Parish Memorial Bursary will be available annually to enable one 4-H Ontario dairy Club Member to attend the RAWF for the very first time. Applicants must demonstrate dedication, determination, and passion for agriculture and their 4-H Dairy Club. They must have never attended the RAWF as either a participant or attendee. Dairy Club Leaders will have the opportunity to make nominations each year and a selection committee will select the recipient. A special thank you to all those associated with the organization of the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair for their assistance in facilitating the presentation. Sen$e Conferences Wrap Up 4-H Ontario’s Sen$e conferences have officially wrapped up for the 2011 year. Successful Beef and Crop Sen$e events ended the conference series on a high note by leaving delegates armed and ready to tackle agriculture business management challenges.
