The IB Learner Profile
IB learners strive to be:
INQUIRERS: They develop their
natural curiosity. They acquire
the skills necessary to conduct
inquiry and research and show
independence in learning. They
actively enjoy learning and this
love of learning will be sustained
throughout their lives.
KNOWLEDGEABLE: They explore
concepts, ideas and issues that
have local and global significance.
In so doing, they acquire indepth
knowledge and develop
understanding across a broad and
balanced range of disciplines.
THINKERS: They exercise initiative
in applying thinking skills critically
and creatively to recognize and
approach complex problems, and
make reasoned, ethical decisions.
COMMUNICATORS: They
understand and express ideas
and information confidently
and creatively in more than one
“Through IB, I realized that projects need not remain
projects, but can be transformed into concrete
accomplishments. I learned to take the lead, start
organizations, take action, and work in a team to reach
a common objective. IB gave me confidence in myself
and my thoughts. I learned to be critical and question my
surrounding world, but also to be passionate about learning
and continually live in awe in face of human knowledge.
Above all, solidarity, kindness, and friendship are words I
will always associate with my IB experience. The convivial
environment and family-like atmosphere make it nearly
impossible to be otherwise.”
• The single best preparation for
university in terms of research, study,
work ethic, and time management
skills
• A diploma offered in approximately
120 countries and recognized by
Health SCIENCE or
Pure & ApplieD SCIENCE
The IB program offers two distinct
streams of scientific study, Health
Science and Pure & Applied Science.
Each stream gives students a solid
foundation in the sciences, but the
choice between them allows for
specialization for future studies. As
the names suggest, students wishing
to pursue further study in health
fields should enroll in Health Sciences,
whereas those interested in applied
sciences would most benefit from
studying in the Pure and Applied
stream.
Second Language
Requirements
All IB students are required to follow
a second language curriculum. The
two language options at Champlain
are French and Spanish. In most cases,
students are required to take French
as a second language. However, if
students demonstrate a sufficiently
high level of ability in French as a
mothertongue, they will be offered the
possibility of taking beginners Spanish
instead of French. Please note that
the Spanish option is not available to
students who have taken Spanish in
high school.
MINIMUM ADMISSION
REQUIREMENTS
In order to be admitted to a program
leading to a Diploma of College
APPLICATION DEADLINE
March 1st for the Fall Semester.
“I fondly remember my two years
in the International Baccalaureate
program at Champlain College and still
miss the open, inquisitive intellectual
atmosphere that characterized our
group. Being part of such a group of
dynamic, inspiring, and highly motivated
individuals profoundly influenced my
way of thinking about the world and
about myself. The program provided an
excellent preparation for my university
studies and helped me become a truly
well-rounded individual and a deep
thinker. Coming from a French-speaking
background, I greatly appreciated the
continuous support I received from
both my instructors and my classmates,
which made my transition to an Englishspeaking
environment much easier than
I expected. In a nutshell, the challenging
IB program taught me to think, to write
and to work; it also gave me many
lifelong friends.”
SCIENCE PROGRAM (200.B0)
which is used for special projects.
The labs are equipped with the
latest in computerized tools for
data collection and analysis that
will enhance your experimental
skills. Each lab workstation is
equipped with a computer as well
as sophisticated sensors and dataacquisition
devices that allow you
to immediately see the outcome of
your work.
The Program
The two-year pre-university Science
Program prepares you for university
admission to Science Programs.
At Champlain, we have found that the
best way for students to succeed is by
making them part of the courses they
take and giving them the opportunity
to study scientific problems the way
professional scientists do. In Biology,
this means that you spend less time
listening to lectures and more time
participating in group activities and
studying relevant cases. In Chemistry,
you have the opportunity to put into
practice what you learn thanks to a
major lab component in each course.
In Physics, option courses that are
directly relevant to trends in science
and engineering are added to the
curriculum.
Science option (Health or
Pure & Applied)
Champlain offers two distinct
streams of scientific study, Health
Science and Pure & Applied Science.
Each stream gives students a solid
foundation in Biology, Chemistry,
Mathematics, and Physics. The
Health Science option includes
additional instruction in Biology
and Chemistry to better prepare
graduates for university study in
programs such as medicine and
health science research. Those
enrolled in Pure & Applied have more
flexibility in their studies and are able
to choose from amongst a selection
of additional science credits to
better suit their academic ambitions.
Facilities
All of our labs were recently
renovated to ensure above standard
course delivery.
The Chemistry Department has four
fully equipped labs. The labs are
equipped with laptop computers
and the latest data acquisition tools.
Students can see the relationship
between the equipment and
the results in real time. Other
equipment include: an Atomic
Absorption Spectrophotometer, a
Gas Chromatograph, an Infrared
Spectrophotometer, and nine
Electronic Analytical Balances.
The Physics Department has four
fully equipped labs, three of which
are used by students to perform
standard experiments and one
In the Biology Department’s two
fully equipped labs, students
pursue open-ended inquiries of
their own design. While some
students make high quality digital
recordings of the behavior of pond
life under a microscope, others
use computers to delve into the
mysteries of protein structure
using research quality molecular
imaging programs. Sophisticated
computer software simulates
biological systems and processes
otherwise difficult or impossible to
study. Teachers and students draw
upon a comprehensive collection of
specimens, video clips and models
to augment their labs and lectures.
“Champlain College provides a nice
bridge between high school and
university thanks to many friendly,
approachable teachers who are
eager to help and support students
throughout their studies. The smaller
campus also promotes more studentteacher
and peer interactions. As a
result, students generally feel less
intimidated and can really open
themselves to the opportunities
Champlain offers. I feel the Health
Science program provides a nice
scientific background that is easy to
draw from and build on in later studies.
Many introductory classes at McGill
University present the basics provided
to science students at Champlain
before delving deeper into the subject
at hand and often these classes will
touch on interdisciplinary concepts,
theories and ideologies formerly seen.
It is particularly appreciable that
Champlain offers science electives
permitting students to personalize
and shape their education to fit the
disciplines they plan to continue their
studies in. As a student with a passion
for biology, I enjoyed the availability
of the Biology 3 class as it provided
novel hands-on experience in anatomy
via several dissections. Today, the
dissection experience gained has been
a rare skill which has given me the
upper hand as an applicant for several
laboratory volunteer positions, a must
for students aiming for post-graduate
studies.”
EDUCATION OPTION / SOCIAL SCIENCE PROGRAM (300.A0)
Education Option
at Champlain
The Education Option is designed for
anyone considering a career in teaching
or other fields related to education.
The aim of this option is to give you a
firm grounding in several social science
disciplines relevant to education,
specifically anthropology, psychology
and sociology.
The Education Option will offer you
many different ways of looking at
education. It will give you a behind
the scenes look at schools, teaching
and related current concerns. You
will examine education broadly to
see how it fits with the rest of society
and its connection with the labour
force. You will look at schools from
the perspective of the classroom and
student-teacher interaction. You will
gain an understanding of students’
psychological development. You will
study various social problems such as
racism and sexism to see how they have
an impact on students, schools and the
society and what solutions are feasible.
The Education Option will give you
a greater awareness of a place and
process that you have been engaged
in for, at this point, most of your life.
This social science foundation will also
give you a formidable background
from which to pursue your teaching
training courses at university. You’ll get
a preview of what learning to become a
teacher may entail, which may also help
you solidify or modify your goals.
While the Education Option focuses
on schooling, it also provides an
excellent preparation for any Arts
program at university. The social science
perspectives and analytical and writing
skills you acquire will be profitable
whatever path you choose.
“The main reason I applied to Champlain
was due to the excellent reviews that I had
heard from family and friends who were
former students at the college. They told me
about the great teaching staff, the helpful
services offered to students, and the many
different teams, clubs and associations that
allowed people to get involved in their school.
The type of learning environment that my
friends and family described seemed fun and
exciting. Once I started my studies, I was
not disappointed in any way! Champlain has
helped me meet my academic and personal
goals. The teachers are extremely dedicated
in helping students in any way necessary
to help us succeed. One of the remarkable
aspects about Champlain is its highly diverse
student body. I met a wide range of new
people and made friends that I know will stick
with me long after graduation. Additionally, by
meeting people from different backgrounds,
I was able to expand my knowledge about
different cultures, allowing me to establish a
better understanding of the world around me.
To future students: Champlain is an excellent
CREATIVE ARTS OPTION / CREATIVE ARTS, LANGUAGE & LITERATURE PROGRAM (500.A1)
• DIGITAL IMAGING / STUDIO ARTS PROFILE • FILM / VIDEO / COMMUNICATIONS PROFILE
• PHOTOGRAPHY / DESIGN PROFILE
THE PROGRAM
Through its three distinct profiles
– Digital Imaging and Studio Arts,
Photography/Design, and Film/
Video/Communications – Creative
Arts introduces students to a
broad range of visual possibilities
from traditional studio arts to
contemporary digital media. Its
aim is to help students find their
passion, acquire the basic skills and
self-discipline necessary to continue
in the domains of art or media, and
become more “visually literate,” an
important quality in practically any
field in today’s media saturated world.
The blend of general education and
specialization in the Creative Arts
program ensures that students are
prepared for university studies in
a wide range of programs in and
outside of the creative arts, as well as
future career opportunities.
In their first semester, students are
enrolled in introductory courses from
each of the profiles, along with the
required general education courses.
In the three semesters following,
they specialize in the profile of their
choice, deepening their knowledge
and abilities, and producing a
portfolio demonstrating the individual
capabilities they have acquired during
the four semesters. During their third
and fourth semesters, they also have
the opportunity to choose two option
classes from the other profiles.
FILM/VIDEO/
COMMUNICATIONS
This profile concentrates on film
and television as examples of the
broader world of communications,
considering their potential and power
both as mass media and as a means
of personal expression. In addition
to building a strong foundation in
the theory and history of media, you
will have the opportunity in every
semester to get involved in handson
digital production, beginning
with shooting and editing in your
very first weeks in the program. The
profile leads directly to media-related
university programs in journalism,
communications, film, television, and
radio, event planning, public relations,
and web design and gaming.
PHOTO/DESIGN
This profile allows you to develop
skills in visual communication,
through the use of traditional
and digital photography, and the
fundamentals of graphic design and
layout. There is extensive handson
production in all areas, and the
chance to build a strong portfolio
that will illustrate both traditional
and contemporary approaches to
photography, in black & white and
colour. The profile is ideal if you
are interested in advertising, art
direction, art reproduction, graphic
design, layout and photo editing,
photography (creative, commercial,
corporate, fashion, publicity, and
sport), photo-journalism and editorial,
scientific, and medical photography.
DIGITAL IMAGING AND
STUDIO ARTS
The profile allows you to work
with traditional art forms including
drawing, painting, and sculpture,
as well as with 2D and 3D digital
software. You will acquire a
command of colour, line, shading,
composition, and other elements
of an artist’s vocabulary, as well as
the self-discipline to follow a visual
way to a polished final work. You
will be encouraged to put together
a strong portfolio which shows your
4. Le Cégep Champlain Saint-Lambert
offre-t-il un soutien aux étudiants dans
ma situation
Les ressources sont là : il n’en tient qu’à toi de t’en
servir !
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Housing
Our Student Services Department
maintains a Housing Registry that will
assist you in locating apartments and
rooms in the vicinity of the College.
The facilities in the Registry are not
inspected by Student Services nor the
College. Be sure to read all the “hints” in
this section before you go apartment or
room hunting. The lease that you sign
or the arrangement that you undertake
in the case of a private home is your
responsibility. Your comments on the
facilities listed in the Housing Registry are
always welcome.
Types of accommodation
Private Homes
• Room with kitchen privileges
This type of accommodation has proven
to be popular and is most affordable.
The student prepares his or her meals in
the home at a lower cost than restaurant
or cafeteria dining.
• Room with meals provided
Depending on the arrangements
made with the family, this type of
accommodation allows for two or three
meals a day included in the rent. This can
be quite a handy situation provided that
it is convenient for you to be home for all
of your meals. If not, perhaps you should
stick to a room with kitchen privileges.
Apartments
Most apartments are not furnished, but
they will often have a refrigerator and
stove. However, utility costs (e.g. heat and
electricity, etc.) may or may not be included
in the rent. Students should be very cautious
before signing any lease and inquire about
any «extras» that may cost more. In the
newspaper, an apartment will be described
as 1-1/2, 2-1/2 etc. The “:1/2” usually refers
to the bathroom. For example, a 2-1/2
room apartment would include a bedroom,
living room with a small kitchenette, and
bathroom. A 3-1/2 would be the same, but
would have a separate room for the kitchen.
The rent will vary according to the size of
the apartment, the building, the area it is
located in and the facilities offered.
Looking for a place to stay
Keep the following in mind:
• Owners of a private home are reluctant
to rent early because a student may not
pass his or her final high school exams,
may not be accepted by the college,
may change his or her mind, etc. August
is usually the best month to look for a
place to stay because, by then, most of
the above facts are known.
• A neat appearance helps to make a
good impression.
• Use the Student Services Housing
Registry, but remember that there are
other resources available.
• Speak to other students. Remember,
word of mouth can get you a great
apartment or room.
• Check the classified ads in the Montreal
and South Shore newspapers. Le
Courrier du Sud is a good source
of information. You can scan the
classifieds on their Internet site at www.
courrierdusud.com
• Check the bulletin boards in the local
shopping centres, grocery stores, etc.
• Sharing an apartment with another
student can be cheaper than renting on
your own. If you are interested in finding
a roommate, stop by Student Services
and place an advertisement in the
Housing Registry.
Found a place to stay
Ask yourself the following:
• Do your appliances work Nothing can
be as frustrating as a stove that does not
work, clogged drains, leaky faucets, etc.
• Are the rooms well heated How
• How clean is the building This will give
you a clue as to the type of service that
you will receive.
• Is your room soundproof Remember,
living near an arcade or heavy traffic
can be irritating and can cut into sleep
and study time.
• Is there enough storage space and
closet space For example, where will
you put your bike for the winter
• If it is unfurnished, how big will your
apartment be after you move in your
furniture
• How many electrical outlets are there
Are they located in convenient places
• Are there laundry facilities in the
building If not, how far away is the
nearest laundromat
• How far away are you from shopping
centres, grocery stores, banks or a
credit union
• What is the route to school Will you
have to pay two or more fares to get to
your destination
• Is there access to a telephone
• Are pets allowed
• If you own a car, are there proper par king
facilities Do you have to pay extra
• Are blankets and linen provided with
your room rental
• Is there a secure lock leading into your
apartment or room
• If you rent a room, what are the
expectations about having friends visit,
the sound level of your music, etc.
Incidentals
Do you need pots and pans, dishes, towels,
blankets, sheets or small appli ances... All
this can be costly if it’s not provided or if
you do not bring your own.
Important note
Before signing a lease, you should
consider important information which is
available from Student Services at (450)
672-7360, extension 355. If you encounter
problems with your lease, you can contact:
Régie du logement / Rental Board
201 Place Charles Lemoyne, 6th floor,
Longueuil
(514) 873-2245 or www.rdl.gouv.qc.ca
There is no charge for this service. If you
have a room in a private home where
three or more rooms are rented out, or
if your room has its own bathroom and
a separate entrance, you are eligible for
assistance from the Rental Board. Student
Services is also available to give you a
hand with any housing difficulties. The
housing information is general and subject
to change. Statements concerning rights
obligations, deadlines, etc. should be
carefully reviewed with the Rental Board
before taking any action.
Transportation
Public transportation is an economical
way to travel. See Student Services about
bus routes and fares and whether you are
eligible for a student pass. Information on
the local South Shore bus routes, fares, etc.
is available on the Réseau de transport de
Longueuil web site at www.rtl-longueuil.
qc.ca. Students who choose to drive to
school can park their vehicles at the college.
Parking passes are available at $150 per
year, $85 per semester and $35 per month.
Daily parking fees are $5.00 per day.
Students will be able to purchase booklets
of 10 tickets for $30. A valid Champlain ID
card is required at the time of purchase.
Prices are subject to change without notice.
