Engage the STEM industry and other
stakeholders
We will actively seek support from industry,
including funds to support our programs,
internships and employment for students,
faculty work experiences, partnerships on
projects, and service on Advisory Boards.
Selected program participants for restricted
activities
Grant-specific activities will be executed
according to stipulations in the grant. General
GSHSP activities will provide enrichment
opportunities for students who declare
interest in pursuing graduate studies. College
of Arts and Sciences students will receive
priority.
Engage the youth in STEM
We will promote and establish pre-college
programs at various levels to interest the
youth in STEM disciplines and professions.
Activities will include Summer Academies,
Academic Quiz Bowls, Essay Competitions,
Science/Research Fairs/Days, and educational
TV programming. We will work to establish
pipelines for recruiting into our college programs.
Communicate STEM information to the
community
We will disseminate useful STEM information to
the community (via TV and other media), engage
in Service Learning activities, conduct Open
Houses for the public.
Mechanism for Implementation
Establish “Project for Integration of Research,
Teaching, and Learning (PIRTL)” – (grant-funded).
The three pillars of PIRTL are as follows:
1. Teaching as research – use research methods
to develop and implement teaching practices
that advance student learning and promote
faculty professional development as scholars
2. Learning Communities – for shared learning
and discovery of new knowledge
3. Learning through diversity – use diverse
experiences, backgrounds, and skills of faculty
and students to enhance learning
Tidal Datum Tabel
A datum is a base elevation used as a
reference from which to reckon heights
or depths. A tidal datum is a standard
elevation defined by a certain phase
of the tide. Tidal datums are used as
references to measure local water
levels and should not be extended into
areas having differing oceanographic
characteristics without substantiating
measurements.
STEMing the TIDE: Promoting Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics Through Integrated
and Diversified Experiences
STEMing the TIDE is a comprehensive approach being used by Bowie State University to address
traditional challenges facing higher education regarding the underrepresentation of minorities in the
science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines and professions.
RATIONALE
GOAL
The goal of this program
is to use a multifaceted
approach to promote
and increase participation
of faculty and students,
especially, minorities, in STEM
disciplines and professions,
by building a world-class
research infrastructure at BSU,
for teaching, research and
extension.
Minorities are significantly underrepresented in the STEM disciplines and workforce. As a
predominantly minority-serving institution in higher education, Bowie State University (BSU) has
a responsibility to contribute to stopping and reversing this trend by implementing strategies for
training more minorities for the workforce, as well as contributing to knowledge in STEM. BSU and
other HBCUs are disadvantaged by their classification as ‘not research intensive institutions’ where
teaching is the primary activity. Consequently, active research is often relegated to a distant activity
by many faculty. Similarly, funding agencies and industry do not consider HBCUs as major sources
of talent in developing partnerships. These perceptions notwithstanding, some of the best minds in
academia reside on campuses like BSU, and should be assisted to pursue high scholarship.
STRATEGIES
A. Promote faculty development in STEM
B. Establish “Programs of Excellence” in STEM
teaching and research
C. Infuse research into STEM curriculum
D. Diversify student experiences
E. Engage the STEM industry and other stakeholders
F. Engage the youth in STEM
G. Communicate useful STEM information to society
TACTICS
Promote faculty development in STEM
Faculty are the engine that drives STEM research,
teaching, and service on campus. We need to do the
following:
- Recruit and retain qualified faculty
- Build a competitive research infrastructure
- Reward excellence in teaching, research, and
service
- Provide/seek opportunities for faculty
development (KSA)
- Develop partnerships and
collaborations with industry
- Promote/assist faculty to vigorously
pursue grants
Establish “Programs of Excellence” in
STEM
BSU would become known for excellence
in selected areas of strength in research
and teaching. We seek to establish:
- Research teams (emphasis) in the
STEM departments
- Academic areas of excellence in
departments and the institution
Infuse research into the STEM curriculum
Our goal is to implement ‘Research across
the STEM curriculum’ by integrating
research into courses. We would pursue
course re-design as needed and provide
cutting-edge classroom instructional
facilities.
Diversify student curricular opportunities
and experiences
We seek to continually update and
expand our course and program inventory
to include contemporary and exciting
courses and programs. We would promote
participation in graduate studies and
develop, as feasible, graduate programs
in STEM at BSU. We will seek new
internship and pre-professional enrichment
opportunities for students.
