The Marsden Fund<br />
The Marsden Fund supports excellence in<br />
research <strong>and</strong> researchers. The fund’s<br />
objectives are:<br />
• to enhance the underpinning research<br />
knowledge base in New Zeal<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong><br />
contribute to the global advancement of<br />
knowledge;<br />
• to broaden <strong>and</strong> deepen the research skill<br />
base in New Zeal<strong>and</strong>; <strong>and</strong><br />
• to undertake research that is investigator<br />
driven.<br />
Centres of <strong>Research</strong> Excellence (CoREs)<br />
The Centres of <strong>Research</strong> Excellence (CoREs)<br />
were established in 2002/03 to encourage the<br />
development of world-class research in New<br />
Zeal<strong>and</strong>, by providing incentives for researchers<br />
in the tertiary education sector to conduct<br />
research that is excellent, contributes to New<br />
Zeal<strong>and</strong>’s future development, <strong>and</strong> incorporates<br />
knowledge-transfer activities.<br />
The Centres of <strong>Research</strong> Excellence are<br />
primarily, but not exclusively, inter-institutional<br />
research networks, with researchers working<br />
together on a commonly agreed work<br />
programme. Each CoRE is hosted by a<br />
university <strong>and</strong> comprises a number of partner<br />
organisations including other universities,<br />
Crown <strong>Research</strong> Institutes <strong>and</strong> wānanga.<br />
Health <strong>Research</strong><br />
The HRC is the major government-funded<br />
agency responsible for purchasing <strong>and</strong> coordinating<br />
health research <strong>and</strong> fostering the<br />
health research workforce in New Zeal<strong>and</strong>.<br />
