The <strong>Roadmap</strong> also outlines eleven key directions (summarised on the next page) <strong>and</strong> associated<br />

actions for biotechnology research. These include directions which:<br />

a ffi rm some existing directions <strong>and</strong> trends considered to be on track, such as the high<br />

level balance of research investment supporting New Zeal<strong>and</strong>’s bio-based industries<br />

<strong>and</strong> emerging opportunities from biomedical research;<br />

signal a number of areas where changes should be made, such as strengthening<br />

research <strong>and</strong> industry linkages <strong>and</strong> tailoring co-investment models for fragmented<br />

industry sectors; <strong>and</strong><br />

indicate areas where New Zeal<strong>and</strong> will need new capabilities, for example, to address<br />

future environmental sustainability challenges or to capitalise on areas of future<br />

opportunity, such as in the marine <strong>and</strong> food <strong>and</strong> beverage sectors.<br />

MoRST will keep the directions <strong>and</strong> actions under review <strong>and</strong> track indicators of progress.<br />

MoRST will also advise the Government on the need to refresh directions by 2011.<br />
