5.5.2 Animal <strong>and</strong> plant biotechnology<br />
<strong>Research</strong> Strengths<br />
Plant <strong>and</strong> animal biotechnology research capabilities<br />
are largely consolidated around important species for<br />
the New Zeal<strong>and</strong> agriculture, horticulture <strong>and</strong> forestry<br />
sectors. As a consequence New Zeal<strong>and</strong> has extensive<br />
plant biotechnology research strengths <strong>and</strong> knowledge<br />
of the biology of industrially significant plants, grasses,<br />
trees <strong>and</strong> crops (both arable <strong>and</strong> horticultural).<br />

New Zeal<strong>and</strong> also has significant research strengths in<br />
large animal biology. We are regarded as being worldleading<br />
in overall knowledge of sheep <strong>and</strong> dairy cattle.<br />
Particular research strengths are in animal genomics<br />
<strong>and</strong> reproductive <strong>and</strong> cloning technologies.<br />
