24 Asking Questions<br />
1 In questions which can be answered with either yes or no, we put an auxiliary verb before the<br />
subject.<br />

2 We use questions beginning with wh- or how when asking for information.<br />

3 When who, what or which is the subject of a sentence, an auxiliary is not used.<br />

What happened at the meeting? (NOT * What <strong>di</strong>d happen ...)<br />
Which costs the least? (NOT * Which does cost the least?)<br />
4 Requests and questions can be made more polite by making them less <strong>di</strong>rect.<br />

Do you mind if I use your phone?<br />
Could you tell me how you found out about our service?<br />
I'd like to know what you don't like about your present employer.<br />
5 Note that in reported questions, as in in<strong>di</strong>rect questions, the word order is the<br />
same as for a statement.<br />
