We use the past simple to talk about completed actions in the recent past (even one second ago) or the<br />
<strong>di</strong>stant past.<br />
She founded the company in 1969.<br />
They went to the bar a few minutes ago.<br />
If you say when something happened (e.g. yesterday, last week, when she was at university, many years<br />
ago) you must use the past simple and not the present perfect.<br />
Time expressions which are typically associated with the past simple are: yesterday, last night, a few<br />
minutes ago, in 1945, then, before, after<br />
