Countries in which tebuconazole-containing products
are registered for use in a wide range of crops.
Bayleton and Baytan, the company introduced
bitertanol, sold as the foliar fungicide
Baycor ® for use in fruit, vegetables
and flowers or as Sibutol ® for seed treatment
in wheat. Tebuconazole was followed
by the development of several other triazoles,
e.g. fluquinconazole, the basis for
products such as Flamenco ® , Palisade ®
and Galmano ® .
The success story goes on
The track record of triazole fungicides
made by Bayer CropScience has certainly
not come to an end yet: the latest development,
leading to the new chemical class of
triazolinthiones, is called prothioconazole.
This new molecule has an extremely broad
spectrum of activity. A wide application
window, rapid uptake of the active substance
by the plant, good rainfastness and
long-lasting activity combine to create a
new dimension in the effective control of
plant diseases.
Since 2004, the substance has been sold
in several countries under the trade name
Proline ® , a spray fungicide, and Redigo ® , a
seed treatment product. Prothioconazole
was first approved in Germany under the
trademark Proline for spray
application and rapidly secured
a large market share there.
Since then, users in a further 16
countries have become convinced
by the outstanding protective and
curative activity of the product. Bayer
CropScience received marketing authorization
for prothioconazole in France in mid-
2006. Fandango ® , a combination of prothioconazole
with the strobilurin fungicide
fluoxastrobin, has been launched in some
European countries and is already wellestablished,
particularly in barley.
In 2005, the prothioconazole-containing
seed treatment product Redigo was
first launched in the UK. It is an easy-tohandle
formulation and meets all of the
requirements and safety standards expected
of a modern crop protection product.
Scenic ® combines prothioconazole, fluoxastrobin
and tebuconazole, and was primarily
created for the premium market in
Europe. Lamardor ® is a new highly-concentrated
formulation containing prothioconazole
and tebuconazole that has been
developed especially for Central and Eastern
Europe.
Increasing spectrum-of-use
Although already a leader in triazoles,
Bayer CropScience is committed to further
improving its fungicides. For new challenges
arising in farming can always call
for new solutions. For instance, Fusarium
spp. has only relatively recently gained significant
importance in cereals. Fusarium
diseases reduce both harvest quantity and
the quality of grains; but most importantly,
several Fusarium species are capable of
producing dangerous mycotoxins that can
affect human and animal health.
For optimal control of Fusarium diseases,
Bayer CropScience has developed
Prosaro ® , a combination of the recentlydeveloped
prothioconazole with the wellestablished
tebuconazole. The rapid initial
efficacy of tebuconazole, along with the
long-lasting efficacy of prothioconazole,
leads to a convincing solution against
Fusarium. So what is the conclusion
Tebuconazole works, year after year, even
after 25 years. ■
