GIS Database Revision -- The Problems and Solutions, Zhongchao Shi, Ryosuke Shibasaki
Data sources: Aerial photograph, Remotely sensed imagery, Non-survey Data (sheet based/
non-digital), etc.
Geo-change detection: new object, old state disappeared, thematic attributes changed
(position, size, shape), geometric aspects changed (split, merge), inside object changed.
Aerial photograph and high-resolution satellite imagery are the most useful data sources.
The problem is the efficiency, that manual operation is now still the major method for finding
out geo-changes by comparing photographs with existing map.
Proposed an automatic building extraction system, which is able to extract buildings in highdensity
urban areas with high extraction rate, includes three major sub-systems: image
processing sub-system, object extraction sub-system, and geo-change detection sub-system.

Object Oriented Database for a GIS, Nidia Posada, David Sol
The previous work implemented geographic objects in applications but they don´t manage the
persistence.
Describes the use and management of geographic objects in a database, use object oriented
DBMS (object/relational Informix module), and interface manages several GIS aspects like
pan, geometric operations (translation, zoom), scales and coordinates, and can be a platform
to test other aspects like queries, interoperability and sharing of geographic data.

Handling Spatial Objects in a GIS Database - Relational v Object Oriented Approaches,
Paul Crowther1 and Jacky Hartnett
Compare the implementation of a GIS (Geographic Information System) database using
RDBMS (Relational Database Management Systems) and OODBMS (Object Oriented
Database Management Systems) developed by normalisation and UML methodologies.
Normalisation is a well developed methodology which will produce a sound solution
(independently re-developed). It is however a technique which requires training and is difficult
for users to understand.
Object models are capable of describing more complex structures than relational models.
However most current database management systems are not capable of implementing all
the class structures that can be modeled.

Conclusion:
GIS Database Revision -- The Problems and Solutions, Zhongchao Shi, Ryosuke Shibasaki
less describtion about the: image processing sub-system, object extraction
sub-system, and geo-change detection sub-system
Object Oriented Database for a GIS, Nidia Posada, David Sol
good describtion about the: pan, geometric operations (translation, zoom), scales
and coordinates
Handling Spatial Objects in a GIS Database - Relational v Object Oriented Approaches,
Paul Crowther1 and Jacky Hartnett
good comparison describtion of about the RDBMS and OODBMS
