and EV Charging
Station
You probably have a few
questions about electric
vehicles. These may include:
• “Are they for real
this time”
• “Are they affordable”
• “Are they practical”
• “Can we power them with
renewable energy”
• “Can this really make a difference”
In our estimate, the short answer to all of these
questions is “Yes, but….” As with any new
technology, advancement completely depends
on how people understand, use, and ultimately
influence its application.
At the MREA, we are focused on and excited
about moving this discussion forward. At this
year’s Energy Fair you will notice our Saturday
keynote address (1:00 p.m.) is Chris Paine,
director of the 2006 documentary Who Killed
the Electric Car and the soon to be released
documentary, The Revenge of the Electric Car.
If you are looking for some answers to the
questions above and some inspiration, you
won’t want to miss his presentation.
In the workshop schedule, you will notice
presentations each day on electric vehicles (see
page 77), including extended workshops for
more information. If you are looking to learn
more and connect with the people working in
this field, don’t miss these workshops.
We are proud to also unveil the MREA Solar
Carport and EV Charging Station. This
2.3kW grid-tied array will power our Prius,
recently converted to a plug-in hybrid. We
will be monitoring the system production and
electricity usage and using the station as a case
study and training environment for two new
MREA courses:
PV 209 – Solar Electric Vehicle Charging for Home
or Business
This introductory course is designed for home
and business owners looking to power electric
vehicles with photovoltaic systems. Participants
will overview available products, analyze
options, discuss trends in the market, estimate
costs, and model the finances of electric
vehicle and solar electric systems.
PV 309 – Conceptual Design for Solar EV Charging
This course is designed to help technical sales
professionals and system installers size PV
systems for electric vehicle use and design and
install code-compliant EV charging stations.
