WHAT IS THE ABA “FAN-FRIENDLY AND AFFORDABLE, THE ABA” HISTORY The ABA and its signature Red, White, and Blue ball has been touching families and communities since its predecessor began play in 1967. The Indiana Pacers were charter members of the original ABA and Richard P. Tinkham, Esq. was co-founder of the Pacers and served as President of the ABA Board of Trustees for two years. The original ABA operated for nine (9) seasons from 1967 1975 before merging with the NBA. The NBA kept the Indiana Pacers, Denver Nuggets, New Jersey Nets, and San Antonio Spurs from the merger, and the other teams closed operations. Mr. Tinkham was the lead merger consultant on behalf of the original ABA. After a twenty-five year hiatus, Dick Tinkham and Joe Newman orchestrated the ABA’s return with the same innovation that created the slam dunk and three point shot; to bring fans, fast-paced, affordable, professional basketball. See www.abalive.com. UNIQUE RULES THE 3-D RULE provides an extra point for a two- or threepoint basket made on a pass intercepted before a team crosses mid-court. THE 3-10 & OUT OVERTIME RULE which dramatically shortens the time spent in deciding a game tied at the end of regulation, makes the play on the floor continuous and very high energy. The First Overtime is 3 minutes, the Second Overtime will conclude when the first team scores 10 points. THE 6th FOUL RULE (PER PLAYER) is in effect when a player commits his 6th foul. The player is allowed to remain in the game, but if there is a foul committed by any of his teammates while he is on the floor, the offended teams gets an additional free throw attempt, plus the inbound of the ball nearest the spot where the foul occurred. 7 SECOND COUNT RULE is the amount of time it takes to bring the ball upcourt. This speeds up the game. The NBA recently reduced the backcourt count from 10 to 8 seconds.
