The properties of surface active agent depends
on their chemical structure, related to the
following factors: hydrophilicity, the relative
position of hydrophilic groups, the size of
molecules and the hydrophobic groups
1) hydrophilicity (HLB) is the equilibrium ratio of
the surface active agent’s hydrophilicity and
lipophilicity:
HLB=hydrophilicity of hydrophilic groups
/hyrophobicity of hydrophobic groups
Surface active agent’s HLB value is related to the
HLB value of each of its radicals, the computing
of which is :
HLB=7+Σ(HLB of hydrophilic groups)-Σ(HLB of
hydrophobic groups)
