PHASE 1 REACTION.<br />

• Organic pollutants could also be metabolized <strong>and</strong><br />

detoxified by Cytochrome P450 enzymes<br />

(Microsomal Monoxygenase; MMO).<br />

PHASE 2 REACTION<br />

• The metabolites undergo conjugation with<br />

endogenous molecules e.g. GSH.<br />

• For some chemicals the metabolites/conjugated<br />

form are more toxic than the parent compound <strong>and</strong><br />

can lead to cancer formation.
