3. Biomarkers of Susceptibility
Biomarkers of susceptibility indicate individual factors
that can affect response to an environmental toxicant
(Bearer, 1998). They are indicators of inherent or
acquired properties of an organism that may lead to an
increase or decrease in the internal dose of the
xenobiotic or an increased or decreased level of the
response resulting from the exposure.
Genetic polymorphisms fall into this category of
biomarkers.
