WELCOME
From the President
Hello to all Dakota Wesleyan
University students, athletes,
faculty, staff, alumni, fans, families
and friends, and welcome to
another exciting season of Tiger
athletics. Our sports teams and
student-athletes are an essential
part of the DWU family, and Dakota
Wesleyan sincerely appreciates
your devoted support.
We enter the 2011-12 academic
year with high hopes that this will
be an unforgettable year on the
DWU campus, both academically
and athletically. This year, we
renew our commitment to
academic excellence and student
engagement, and we look forward
to an exciting future. Throughout
our history, athletics have been an
important part of Wesleyan, and
that tradition continues as we
anticipate success for our teams
on the field, court, course and
track, as well as in the classroom.
Whether with your presence at
athletic events or through your
monetary contributions, your
support of our school, students,
athletes, coaches and teams is
greatly appreciated. The Dakota
Wesleyan University family has
never been stronger, and for that,
we offer our sincere gratitude.
TIGERS
From the Athletic Director
Hello and welcome to the start of
another great season of Dakota
Wesleyan University athletics.
There has never been a better time
to be a DWU Tiger than right now.
We have an excellent group of
coaches in place who have their
goals set high and are committed
to taking their programs to new
heights in 2011-12 and beyond.
We have a first-rate group of
student-athletes who proudly
represent Dakota Wesleyan’s
values, and our athletic staff is
committed to helping our teams
excel.
Much of our success wouldn’t be
possible without the contributions
of the DWU TeamMakers booster
club and the DWU athletic
corporate sponsors. These
partnerships allow our coaches to
recruit the best possible studentathletes.
Both groups are
extremely dedicated to helping
provide a positive experience for
our student-athletes. I’d like to offer
a special thank you to the
TeamMakers and corporate
sponsors for your roles in Tiger
athletics.
Whatever your connection to DWU,
we’d like to invite you to be a part of
the Tiger athletic family as we
continue our journey to reach new
levels in both the NAIA and the
Great Plains Athletic Conference.
Welcome aboard, thanks for your
support and go Tigers!
FACILITIES
Christen Family Recreation/Wellness Center
TIGERS
Christen Family Recreation/Wellness Center
Built in 1985 and named after Paul and Donna Christen, the Christen Family Recreation/
Wellness Center is the home to the Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team, and it
is the epicenter of Tiger athletics. The facility is home to classrooms, athletic staff and
coaches’ offices, and an athletic training room. However, the wellness center is at its
best when enthusiastic, standing-room only crowds fueled by DWU students and Tiger
fans provide the volleyball team with a true home-court advantage.
Champions of Character
All Dakota Wesleyan University student-athletes and their coaches have taken a pledge, a commitment to the true spirit of
competition to become Champions of Character. This initiative of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics brings
formal emphasis to character development through respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
Athletes representing every sport at DWU raise their hands and vow to be true Champions of Character. By taking the
pledge, DWU athletes and coaches agree to follow a code of ethics established by the NAIA and adapted to fit DWU.
RESPECT: Information delivered by public address announcers
at Dakota Wesleyan events is neutral and information based,
and a Champions of Character announcement is read at the
beginning of each contest.
RESPONSIBILITY: DWU reports graduation rates from an
IPEDs Report and lists at least two objectives to increase the
university’s graduation rate.
INTEGRITY: A “Coaches Code” and “Code of Ethics” are
presented and signed by all athletic staff and administrators. All
DWU student-athletes receive, read and sign a “Champions of
Character” pledge. They are asked to uphold the code.
SERVANT LEADERSHIP: Student-athletes are asked to
participate in at least one community service activity.
SPORTSMANSHIP: A policy of no profanity in practice and
game competition is established.
OUTLOOK
trying to turn
THE CORNER
A solid recruiting class and talented group
of returners has DWU coach Eric Viney excited for
the 2011 season, as well as years to come.
TIGER PREVIEW
By LEAH RADO, Sports Information Director
If the Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team’s 2011
recruiting class is any indication of the season the team is
going to have, it should be a good year for Tiger volleyball.
DWU head coach Eric Viney signed South Dakota’s Miss
Volleyball for Class “AA” and Class “B,” along with an Omaha,
Neb., standout and a handful of talented players from South
Dakota and Wisconsin in the offseason.
Combine those new faces with three experienced seniors –
including the team’s leading defensive player and a pair of
talented hitters – and a group of returning players who gained
college experience in 2010, and the fourth-year head coach is
hoping big things come out of this season.
TIGERS
Warne and Sanderson are each in their fourth season with
Dakota Wesleyan, and Veldhuizen is in her second. She
transferred to DWU from Dordt College before the 2010
season, but she had to sit out the year due to Great Plains
Athletic Conference transfer rules.
“The experience that Kacie and Brooke have had in their
previous three years will be extremely beneficial, and the level
of play that Larissa was coming from will be helpful,” Viney said.
“They had a really good spring, so I think they came together
and they want to have us turn the corner. We’re excited about
them.”
Warne led Dakota Wesleyan’s defense with 460 digs and an
average of 3.97 digs per game in 2010. She earned All-GPAC
Honorable Mention honors and finished eighth in the league in
digs per game. Warne also secured herself a spot in the Tiger
record books and is 13th on the school’s all-time list with 720
digs in her first three years with the team.
Sanderson recorded 107 kills in 92 games in 2010. She also
had 17 service aces and 58 total blocks. Veldhuizen racked up
970 kills and 188 total blocks in three seasons with the
Defenders. She will add experience as an outside hitter for the
Tigers.
Also returning from the 2010 season is 6-foot middle hitter
Rachel Tinklenberg (Pipestone, Minn.). Tinklenberg finished
with 83 kills in 2010 to go with 38 total blocks her freshman
season. Sam Sandau, a 5-10 sophomore from Tripp, S.D., will
have a larger role as one of the team’s outside hitters in her
second varsity season. She finished with 13 kills in 10 games
as a freshman.
“We have so many new things and new faces,” Viney said.
“The goal is to do better than you did the year before, and so far
we’ve done that every single year. We’ve finished one place
higher every year I’ve been here.
“We are more athletic than we’ve been in the past. We’re not
as big as we were the past two years, but we’re athletic and we
have a different mental strategy and a better understanding of
the game.”
Three seniors will be the Tigers’ leaders on and off the court in
2011. Brooke Warne (5-9, Rapid City, S.D.) returns as the
team’s leading defensive player; Kacie Sanderson (6-0,
Laurel, Mont.) is the Tigers’ tallest player from the middle hitter
position; and Larissa Veldhuizen (5-8, Dordt College) will hit
the court as a Tiger for the first time in 2011.
DWU senior Brooke Warne will lead the Tigers’ defense in 2011.
2011 Tiger Volleyball page 6
OUTLOOK
TIGERS
“We expect a lot out of Rachel,” Viney said. “We expect a pretty
good breakout year for her. Sam is also going to be asked to do
a lot. We weren’t expecting to be asking so much of her so
quickly, but with how some things have come about with
recruiting, she has to really step up.”
Also returning are defensive specialists Kayla O’Connell
(Jr., Philip, S.D.) and Stacie Brinker (So., Rapid City, S.D.).
O’Connell recorded 116 digs as a sophomore for DWU.
Brinker saw time as a setter as a true freshman, but she will be
moved to a defensive specialist for her sophomore campaign.
Headlining the Tigers’ 2011 signees are freshman TyAnn
Buddenhagen (5-9, Huron, S.D.) and Briana Jung (5-6,
Warner, S.D.). Buddenhagen, a setter/outside hitter, was
named South Dakota’s Miss Volleyball for Class “AA,” and Jung,
a setter, earned the same honor for Class “B” in 2010.
Buddenhagen recorded 389 assists, 300 kills, 55 blocks and
45 ace serves as a senior, and Jung wrapped up her career
with 973 assists and averaged 10.9 assists per set as a senior.
Jung, who played high school volleyball for her mom, head
coach Kari Jung, helped the Monarchs to the Class “B” state
title in 2009 and a runner-up finish in 2010.
“TyAnn is from the area and was named Class ‘AA’ Miss
Volleyball; that’s a huge get for us,” Viney said. “Then Briana
with her complete understanding of the game ... she’s a really
easy-going athlete, and someone who has experience winning
a lot of high school matches. We’re very excited about that.”
Viney also signed Danielle Bird (5-10), a defensive specialist
from Omaha, Neb. She recorded 267 kills, 80 digs and 51
blocks as a senior at Burke High School. Katie Lindow (5-8,
OH) and Paige VandenMeerendonk (5-10, OH) both join the
Tigers from Green Bay, Wis., and both will be looked to as
freshmen to make an immediate impact.
“Danielle is going to be a big surprise for a lot of people,” Viney
said. “We weren’t expecting to sign her, but somehow it worked
out. Both our Wisconsin kids are outside hitters and both are
very strong. Katie is probably going to step in and be a vocal
leader right away.”
Viney has four setters – Buddenhagen and Jung, as well as
sophomore Kelli Swenson (5-5, Chamberlain, S.D.), who saw
junior varsity time in 2010, and Jordyn Heath, an incoming
sophomore and new face from Kimball, S.D. – to work with in
2011. Viney said he will probably run a 6-2 offense this season,
but with the experience and talent of his setters, he will have
options down the road.
DWU senior Kacie Sanderson returns as the team’s leading hitter.
“We want to do a 6-2,” he said. “Whoever of the four setters
decides they want to do it by stepping up their game and
leading ... it’s a unique situation. I think the only player who has
done a 6-2 would be TyAnn. It’s going to be unique for most of
them, but I think it’s something that will benefit us.”
As well as continuing to improve in the GPAC standings and
move their way up in the conference, the Tigers will have more
individualized goals this season. Those individualized goals
will help Dakota Wesleyan improve as a team and get to where
it wants to be as a whole.
“We’re trying to go about it this year by having the girls have
some individual-type goals they want to get to and then lump
those all together into some team stuff,” Viney said. “I hope to
be playing extremely well in the middle to late part of the year
so we can put some loftier expectations on us.
“If that includes hosting another conference tournament match
and actually winning that one and getting to the next stage this
year, put those on us when the time comes.”
COACHES
TIGERS
Eric Viney
Head Volleyball Coach
In his fourth season with the Dakota Wesleyan
University volleyball team, head coach Eric Viney
is poised to help the Tigers break into the top half
of the always-tough Great Plains Athletic
Conference.
After two 13-win seasons, DWU picked up 10
wins in Viney’s third season with the Tigers.
Dakota Wesleyan went 10-24 in 2010 and finished 10th in the GPAC.
The Tigers won back-to-back games at the Sioux Falls Tournament
against Waldorf College and Valley City State University in early
September. DWU also won back-to-back matches when it beat
Presentation College and Mount Marty College in September, and again
when it defeated Mount Marty College for a second time and Bethany
Lutheran College in October.
Dakota Wesleyan won four GPAC games, including two wins
against Mount Marty and one against both Concordia University and
Midland University. Dakota Wesleyan beat the Warriors 3-2 during the
regular season in Fremont, Neb., but lost 3-0 in the first round of the
GPAC Postseason Tournament in early November.
Under Viney’s direction, two DWU athletes earned All-GPAC honors
in 2010. Senior Ashley Kley earned All-GPAC Honorable Mention
accolades after leading the team in kills and finishing second on the
Mitchell
a great college town
www.cityofmitchell.org
Mitchell, S.D., offers a unique college atmosphere to students
who attend Dakota Wesleyan University. The continually growing
city of roughly 15,000 people packages the feel of a close-knit
community into a city with endless resources for shopping,
entertainment and recreation.
Expanding commercial districts on the north and south ends of
town combine with Mitchell’s historic Main Street to provide ample
opportunities for shopping, dining, hotels and night life, as well as
job opportunities that value students’ talents and abilities. Sioux
Falls, just a 60-minute drive east on I-90, offers even more big-city
amenities to students and their families.
The city has both a state-of-the-art movie theatre and a drivein
open during the warm-weather months, along with endless
opportunities for outdoor recreation. Mitchell is home to two 18-
hole golf courses, indoor and outdoor swimming pool facilities,
tennis courts, athletic fields, a hockey arena and numerous
recreation and fitness centers. Lake Mitchell provides boating,
swimming, fishing and camping opportunities, and the
surrounding area is well-known for its world-class pheasant
hunting.
Mitchell is known for the World’s Only Corn Palace, but this
South Dakota community has plenty to offer its college students.
Mitchell is a safe, comfortable community that feels like home.
