The DWU-Concordia series
This will be the 13th meeting between Dakota Wesleyan and
Concordia in football. The Bulldogs hold a 7-5 advantage in the series.
When the two teams met last season at Joe Quintal Field, the Tigers
came away with a 41-17 win. DWU is has won the past two games against
the Bulldogs. Prior to that, the two teams hadn’t played since the 2007
season.
Coming out swinging
Sophomore linebacker Anthony Cervantes started his third season
with the DWU defense with a career night on Saturday. Not only did he
lead the team with nine tackles, he also had a game-high 4.5 tackles for a
loss, 1.5 sacks and an interception return for a touchdown.
Cervantes, a Burbank, Calif., native, recorded just four tackles for a
loss all season in 2011. Saturday, he had 4.5 for a total loss of 22 yards.
He also picked off Dakota State and ran the pass back 25 yards for a
touchdown - his first as a Tiger - to help put the game away. For his
performance, he was named the GPAC Defensive Player-of-the-Week - the
first league honor of his career.
Start of a big season
Senior running back Josh Endres seemed to put the team on his
shoulders early on Saturday night as he scored three times - all in the first
quarter - to help give Dakota Wesleyan the momentum after the Trojans
scored on their first two drives of the game.
Endres, an Ethan, S.D., native, scored the Tigers’ first touchdown of
the game 29 seconds in on a 75-yard run to tie the game at seven. Later in
the quarter, he scored again on a 7-yard run to make it a 14-14 game, and
he helped put Dakota Wesleyan up for good on a 69-yard touchdown run
with 24 seconds left in the first quarter. He appeared to have a fourth
touchdown in the the third quarter on a 60-yard run, but it was called back
due to a holding penalty.
Endres ended the night with 213 rushing yards, 183 of which came in
the first quarter alone.
First-time scorers
Cervantes’ touchdown Saturday night was the first of his Dakota
Wesleyan career, and he wasn’t the only Tiger to find the end zone for the
first time. Sophomore running back Arthur Brown also scored the first
touchdown of his DWU career and wide receiver Michael Brown scored
for the first time in a Tiger uniform Saturday night as well.
Brown’s touchdown came on an 11-yard pass from Jon Bane with just
under five minutes left to play in the first quarter, and Brown ended a twoquarter
scoring drought when he caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from
Bane with 29 seconds gone from the final quarter against the Trojans.
Stopping forward motion
The Tiger defense seemed determined to keep Dakota State from
making any forward progress Saturday night as nine players got in on a
tackle for a loss and DSU quarterback Brandon Large was sacked five
times. Cervantes led the way with 4.5 tackles for a loss, and Craig
Henglefelt finished with 2.5. Brady Bonte and Matt Tuttle also had 1.5
tackles for a loss, and Cervantes, Henglefelt and Bonte all had a hand in at
least one sack.
About the Concordia Bulldogs
The Concordia University Bulldogs finished with just four wins in 2011
in Vance Winter’s third season as head coach, but they are hoping that
talent and some new coaches will help them improve on that mark.
Concordia is 11-22 in Winter’s three-plus seasons.
The Bulldogs finished with a 4-7 mark in 2011, and are 0-1 to start
2012. Concordia, of Seward, Neb., lost 45-37 to Benedictine College (Kan).
Benedictine was ranked No. 23 in the NAIA Top 25 Preseason Poll.
One key for the Bulldogs this offseason was hiring offensive coordinator
Curran White. White comes to Seward after six seasons at Missouri
Valley College, and his presence was felt in Concordia’s first game of the
year as it lost in a shootout to Benedictine.
Leading the offense for Concordia this season is sophomore quarterback
Von Thomas. He threw for 189 yards and one touchdown as a
freshman, and started the year with a 157-yard, two-touchdown performance
against Benedictine. Colten Quinabo is the team’s top returning
receiver, and he caught four passes for 34 yards last weekend.
Also back for the Bulldogs is running back Aaron Gillory, who sat out
part of 2011 with an ACL injury. Four starters are back from the Bulldogs’
offensive line, and they helped Concordia pile up nearly 300 yards of total
offense last week.
Defensively, Nakemm Evans paced the Bulldogs with 13 tackles,
including one for a loss, against Benedictine. He, along with returners
Dylan Heithoff and Michael Voelker, are Concordia’s go-to defensive
players this season.
Joe Marshall will have punting duties this year, and he averaged 38.3
yards in four punts last week. Kenny Zoeller kicked three field goals and
two extra points against Benedictine.
Special teams coming together
The Tiger special teams units held their own Saturday night, and the
veterans and newcomers both had solid games. Senior punter Derek
Carlson leads the GPAC and is second in the nation after averaging 49.2
yards per punt in five punts against Dakota State. He had one touchback.
In his first-ever collegiate football game, freshman Dan Porter took
over kicking duties for the Tigers. He kicked off seven times for 406 yards
for an average 58 yards per kickoff. He also went 4-for-6 in extra-point
attempts.
With return specialist Anthony Muilenburg on the sidelines, junior
Francois Barnaud took over return duties. He returned two punts for a
total of 13 yards and one kickoff for 52 yards.
Tiger Notes
• Quarterback Jon Bane kicked off his junior season with a 211-yard
performance that included two touchdowns and no interceptions. He went
16-for-23 with a long of 60 yards. Last season, Bane set the school record
for single-season passing yards with 2,817
• With one game in the books, Endres leads the GPAC and the nation
in rushing yards per game (213) and scoring per game (18). Heading into
his senior season, he was sixth on the school’s career rushing chart and
third on the all-time scoring chart. He currently needs 722 rushing yards to
become just the third Tiger athlete to run for more than 3,000 yards in a
career.
• The Tiger defense was hard on Dakota State’s running game
Saturday night. Dakota Wesleyan gave up just 74 rushing yards in 37
attempts, and allowed the Trojans an average 2.0 yards per rush. Thanks
to the Tiger defense, the Trojans lost 52 rushing yards throughout the
game.
• The DWU defense is looking for a calmer start to this week’s game.
The Tigers gave up 14 points in the first 1:58 of the game against Dakota
State - including a touchdown in the first 19 seconds - but didn’t give up
any points after that.
season with a big win when it defeated in-state rival Dakota State University 40-14 in a
points in the first 29 seconds. The Trojans scored on their first play from scrimmage
when Carl Curtis threw an 81-yard pass to Zach Ely 19 seconds into the game, but DWU
Dakota State went up 14-7 when Brandon Large threw an 82-yard touchdown pass to
Stacey Berg less than two minutes laterr. The Tigers tied the score with just under seven
minutes to play in the first quarter on a seven-yard touchdown run by Endres, and
Andrew DeVaney recovered a Trojan fumble on their next possession to help set up an
11-yard touchdown pass from Jon Bane to Arthur Brown to put DWU up for good.
The Tigers added one last first-quarter touchdown with 24 seconds left in the quarter
when Endres ran for his third score of the game, this time on a 69-yard run.
Bane connected with Michael Brown for a 60-yard touchdown pass with less than 30
seconds gone from the fourth quarter to put the Tigers up 34-14. Anthony Cervantes
ended the scoring with a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown on Dakota State’s
next possession.
Endres finished the game with 213 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Bane went
16-for-23 for 211 yards and two touchdown passes. Michael Brown led all receivers with
94 yards on four catches and Brown added 40 yards on seven catches.
Bulldog Stadium • Seward, Neb.
ATCHISON, Kan. – The Bulldogs went toe-to-toe with 13 th -ranked Benedictine (Kan.)
but, ultimately, high-powered Benedictine was too much and won 45-37.
Concordia’s Derek Blessing scored on a 56-yard punt return with 2:56 remaining in
the game brought the Bulldogs within eight. However, the ensuing onside kick was
recovered by the Ravens.
The Ravens appeared to be on cruise control after running back Cameron Fore
plowed into the end zone from two yards out to give Benedictine a seemingly
commanding lead at 45-23 with 11:14 left in the contest. But Thomas scored on an eightyard
run with 9:39 to go to make the score 45-29.
The Bulldogs, outgained 407-295 in the game, played evenly with Benedictine
throughout the first half as a multitude of errors plagued the Ravens. After grinding out a
62-yard, 14-play drive on their first possession to go up 7-0, the visitors served up a
prime scoring opportunity for head coach Vance Winter’s squad.
A snap high over Raven punter Dylan McGuire’s head trickled all the way to the
Benedictine 18-yard line, setting the Bulldogs up in the red zone. Concordia failed to
record a first down and settled for a Kenny Zoeller 27-yard field goal.
A fumbled kick return and an interception thrown by Benedictine quarterback Bill
Noonan set up two more Zoeller field goals to give the Bulldogs a 9-7 lead. The Ravens
fumbled the ball into the end zone and offensive lineman Hayden Smith pounced on top,
putting the Ravens up 14-9.
The Bulldogs answered with a touchdown pass from Thomas to fullback Will Cox
before Benedictine closed the half with a Zach Keenan 37-yard field goal to take a 17-16
lead into the locker room.
