WELCOME
Welcome to 2010-11
Tiger Athletics
From the President
Hello to all Dakota Wesleyan
University students, athletes,
faculty, staff, alumni, fans,
families and friends, and
welcome to another exciting
season of Tiger athletics. Our
sports teams and studentathletes
are an essential part of
the DWU family, and Dakota
Wesleyan sincerely appreciates
your devoted support.
We enter the 2010-11 academic
year with high hopes that this
will be an unforgettable year on
the DWU campus, both
academically and athletically.
This year, we will wrap up the
celebration of our 125th
anniversary, and we look forward
to the excitement of the future at
DWU. Throughout our history,
athletics have been an
important part of Wesleyan, and
that tradition continues as we
anticipate success for our
teams on the field, court, course
and track, as well as in the
classroom.
Thank you for supporting our
school, students, athletes,
coaches and teams. The
Dakota Wesleyan University
family has never been stronger,
and for that, we offer our sincere
gratitude.
Bob Duffett and Curt Hart
TIGERS
From the Athletic Director
Hello and welcome to the start of
another great season of Dakota
Wesleyan University athletics. I
hope you’re as excited for the start
of the new season as I am.
There has never been a better time
to be a DWU Tiger than right now.
We have an excellent group of
coaches in place who are
committed to taking their programs
to new heights in 2010-11 and
beyond. We have a first-rate group
of student-athletes who proudly
represent Dakota Wesleyan’s
values, and our athletic staff is
committed to helping our teams
excel.
Much of our success wouldn’t be
possible without the contributions
of the DWU TeamMakers booster
club and the DWU athletic
corporate sponsors. These
partnerships allow our coaches to
recruit the best possible studentathletes.
Both groups have made
huge strides in the past year and
are headed in an exciting, new
direction. I’d like to offer a special
thank you to the TeamMakers and
corporate sponsors for your roles in
Tiger athletics.
Whatever your connection to DWU,
we’d like to invite you to be a part of
the Tiger athletic family as we
embark on our exciting quest to
reach new levels in both the NAIA
and the Great Plains Athletic
Conference. Welcome aboard,
thanks for your support and go
CORN PALACE
TIGERS
A One-of-a-Kind Arena in a “Basketball Town”
Mitchell Corn Palace
The World’s Only Corn Palace attracts tourists from across the
country and the world each year, particularly during the summer
months. However, during the winter months the Corn Palace
transforms into one of the best small college and high school
basketball venues in the entire country. The Corn Palace, built
in 1892, seats 3,200 with stadium seating on one side of the
court and bleachers on the other side and both ends. Murals
celebrating South Dakota’s heritage, made entirely of corn,
adorn the inside of the arena.
In 2004, the Corn Palace was named one of the 10 best places
to watch high school basketball by USA Today, and it is
featured on nikebasketball.com’s Baller’s Network.
The Dakota Wesleyan men’s and women’s basketball teams
are routinely among the GPAC leaders in attendance. The
Tigers enjoy a distinct home-court advantage thanks to its
unique and spectacular venue and the support it receives from
the DWU campus and the city of Mitchell, which is a bona fide
“basketball town.”
Tiger Women’s Basketball
BASKETBALL PREVIEW
By LEAH RADO, Sports Information Director
Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball head coach Jason
Christensen knows that, from the outside looking in, coaches in the
Great Plains Athletic Conference might not think much of his team.
The Tigers are coming off an 8-23 campaign in 2009-10 that included
a 4-14 mark in the GPAC. DWU lost all five of its starters, has a new
head coach and returns just three players from last year’s varsity
squad.
None of that is lost on Christensen, who was hired in June to replace
former head coach Aaron Kahl, but it will only be fuel for the young
Tigers.
“We’re going to be very young, very inexperienced, but we’re not
going to make excuses,” he said. “The pressure is not on us. If we’re
picked to finish last in the GPAC, I think the kids will want to do
something about it.”
Christensen is no stranger to turning programs around. When the
Dakota Wesleyan alum took over the Wagner High School boys’
basketball team in 2008, the Red Raiders had won a total of 10 games in
three years. In Christensen’s two years at the helm, Wagner finished
34-8 with two conference titles and several top-five rankings in the South
Dakota Sportswriters Association Boys’ Basketball Poll.
At the base of this year’s Tiger squad will be the three returning
varsity players and one key transfer. Christensen will look to these four,
along with his new recruits, to replace All-GPAC Second-Team honoree
Allison Johnson, as well as Ashley Johnson – a four-year starter at
point guard – and Angela Noteboom.
Kenzie Dvoracek, Elizabeth Lamb and Brittany Hills all saw time
on varsity last season, and Brittany Pritchard played for Dana College
for two seasons before it closed this summer. Dvoracek, Lamb and
Pritchard will serve as the team’s captains, and they will be looked to as
leaders throughout the season.
Dvoracek is the team’s only senior and fourth-year player in 2010-
11. She saw playing time as a true freshman before dealing with injuries
page 6
and sitting out some of her sophomore season. Dvoracek saw
extended playing time as a junior, and as long as she stays healthy, will
play a big role for the Tigers as a senior.
“Kenzie is a senior and has been around this program for four
years,” Christensen said. “We’re looking to her for some leadership. If
she can stay healthy the whole year, I really think she can help us.”
Lamb got off to a strong start as a true freshman before her season
was cut short due to an injury. She played in the first 19 games of the
season and averaged 7.8 points per game, which was third on the
team.
Lamb led the team in scoring three times and hit double digits in 10
games. In her first collegiate game, she had a career-high six assists.
Christensen is looking for all that and more from Lamb in her
sophomore season.
“Liz got hurt last year, and one thing with her is she needs to be a little
more confident with her knee,” he said. “I think from this summer until
now she’s gained a lot of confidence, and I think she’s just more
confident with everything.”
Pritchard joined Dakota Wesleyan this summer after Dana College
closed its doors, and she’ll be a leader in her first year with the Tigers.
The junior averaged four points and 3.8 rebounds per game for the
Vikings as a sophomore. She saw ample playing time in her freshman
and sophomore seasons, and she brings college and GPAC
experience, both of which are a valuable commodity for this year’s
young squad.
“She’s going to be a go-to player,” Christensen said. “For a kid
Kenzie Dvoracek
www.dwu.edu

OUTLOOK
TIGERS
coming in, to say she’s a go-to player, that’s how much confidence I
have in her right now.
“She’s going to take a lot of the workload, and I think she can handle
it. She’s got a great attitude, and she works hard in practice. One thing
about Brittany is she’s a post player, but she can play in or out.”
Hills will also be looked to for veteran leadership in just her
sophomore season. She played in 30 games as a true freshman
behind Ashley Johnson at the point guard spot. Hills led the team with a
.417 shooting percentage from 3-point range. She also finished third
with 56 assists and led the team in scoring once.
Hills will be DWU’s starting point guard this season and will need to
play calm and handle pressure from some of the nation’s best each
night in the GPAC.
“Brittany played more of a two last year, but we’ll put her at the point
this season,” Christensen said. “She will play the off guard, but she has
to get us in our offense. If she can handle the pressure teams put on us,
we’ll be in a lot of games.”
Christensen’s fifth starter will be a freshman who was one of the
Tigers’ top recruits in the offseason.
Micaela Erickson comes to DWU after an extremely successful
prep career at Lac qui Parle Valley High School in Milan, Minn.
She scored 1,601 points in five seasons on varsity and holds school
records for career points, points in a season (507) and points in a game
(39). She also holds records for career rebounds (829) and rebounds
in a game (21).
Erickson averaged 19.5 points, 8.4 rebounds, 3.1 steals and 2.9
assists per game as a senior.
“Micaela will be the only freshman who will probably start the first
game,” Christensen said. “She’s a nice player, and we expect big
things out of her in her next four years.
“She’s a wonderful kid; she spends countless hours in the gym,
works on her game and takes it pretty seriously.”
Along with Erickson, four other freshmen will see the bulk of the
minutes for the Tigers this season. Seven freshmen, four sophomores,
two juniors and a senior make up DWU’s roster.
Former Sioux Falls Roosevelt standout Kim Johnson will be an
impact player for the Tigers. She averaged 8.9 points and 6.2
rebounds per game for the Rough Riders, who are a perennial
powerhouse in South Dakota Class “AA” basketball.
Hometown native Taylor Piper will also see playing time as a
freshman. The Mitchell native played for Wes Morgan, a former
standout on the Tiger men’s basketball team. Piper helped turn the
Kernel girls’ basketball program around in her four seasons.
“I call Kim the crafty player,” Christensen said. “She finds ways to
get herself open, and she makes moves that are fun to watch. Taylor
will play a backup role to our guards. One of her strong points is she
can penetrate. She can get to the rack when the shot clock’s winding
down.”
Shawna Evans and Amanda Hart will also see plenty of time for
DWU in 2010-11. Evans came to Dakota Wesleyan University late this
summer from Bennett County High School and will be the backup point
guard. Hart joins the Tigers after a very successful high school career
at nearby Hanson High School in Alexandria, S.D. She averaged 17
points, five rebounds and five assists per game as a senior for the
Tiger Women’s Basketball
page 7
Brittany Hills
Beavers, who went 38-6 in her final two seasons.
“Shawna is what I like to call the unknown. Every day she’s getting
better, and she came out of nowhere,” Christensen said. “Amanda is
our purest shooter. She’s a sharpshooter, and she finds ways to get
open.”
Despite his team’s youth and inexperience at the college level,
Christensen is hoping to watch his team improve each and every time
they step out on the court. He knows it might be a tough run in the
GPAC, which is traditionally a hotbed for the nation’s best women’s
basketball teams, but he also knows the potential of his young squad.
“This whole thing will be a process,” he said. “We have one senior,
and everyone else is back next year, which is a good thing. If we can
improve, maybe next year we can be a team to reckon with.
“I’m not saying we’re writing off this year, because we’re not. I’m
hoping, come GPAC time, we’re making some noise.”
COACHES
TIGERS
JASON CHRISTENSEN (Dakota Wesleyan ’98)
Head Women’s Basketball Coach
First Season
Phone: 605-995-2175 E-mail: jachrist@dwu.edu
Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball introduced a new,
yet familiar, face in the summer of 2010 when Jason Christensen took
over as head coach.
Christensen, a 1998 graduate of DWU, is the 12th women’s
basketball coach in the program’s 35-year history. He inherits a DWU
squad that finished 8-23 overall and 4-14 in the Great Plains Athletic
Conference in the 2010-11 season.
Christensen starts his college coaching career with a young team,
as only three varsity athletes from the 2009-10 squad return for the
2010-11 season. The Tigers graduated five seniors in May, including
Allison Johnson, an All-GPAC Second-Team pick who graduated as
the seventh-highest scorer in DWU history with 1,355 points in three
seasons. She is also fourth in school history for career average points
per game with 14.6. Senior starters Angela Noteboom and Ashley
Johnson, Allison’s twin sister, also graduated in May.
Christensen brings a wealth of basketball knowledge, as well as
knowledge of the area, with him to the Tiger program. This will be
Christensen’s first collegiate coaching experience, but he has 11 very
successful years of high school coaching under his belt. For nine
seasons, he coached the Mount Vernon High School girls’ basketball
team. In those nine seasons, his teams went 173-29 (.856) with six
conference titles, five district championships and four region titles.
In 2004 and 2005, Christensen led the Fillies to back-to-back Class
“B” state titles with a 49-0 record. Mount Vernon also took second- and
third-place finishes in two other trips to state. Christensen was
nominated for the South Dakota Girls’ Coach-of-the-Year award four
times and won the honor in 2004. He also coached the South Dakota/
Nebraska All-Star Game.
Most recently, Christensen spent two seasons turning the Wagner
High School boys’ basketball team into a state-title contender. Before
his tenure with the Red Raiders, the team won 10 games in three
seasons. In Christensen’s two seasons, the team went 34-8 (.809),
won two conference titles and also achieved a top-five ranking in the
South Dakota Sportswriters’ Association Boys’ Basketball Poll.
Christensen has also had the opportunity to coach at camps in South
Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska and Iowa, and he has organized
individual camps in Mount Vernon and Wagner. He has also helped
organize several basketball camps at Mitchell High School.
Christensen grew up in Mitchell and played high school basketball
for the Kernels before graduating from Dakota Wesleyan in 1998 with a
Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education. He received a
master’s degree in physical education, health and recreation from
Emporia State University in Emporia, Kan., in 2004.
Christensen and his wife, Michelle, live in Mount Vernon with their
two children, Kaitlyn and Tyler.
“We’re going to be very young, very
inexperienced, but we’re not going to make excuses.
The pressure is not on us. If we’re picked to finish last
in the GPAC, I think the kids will want to do something
about it. Night in and night out, I just hope to see us
improve. I’m hoping by conference time, we’re
making some noise.”
Champions of Character
All Dakota Wesleyan University student-athletes and their coaches have taken a pledge, a commitment to the true spirit of
competition to become Champions of Character. This initiative of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics brings
formal emphasis to character development through respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
Athletes representing every sport at DWU raise their hands and vow to be true Champions of Character. By taking the
pledge, DWU athletes and coaches agree to follow a code of ethics established by the NAIA and adopted to fit DWU.
RESPECT: Information delivered by public address announcers at Dakota
Wesleyan events is neutral and information based, and a Champions of
Character announcement is read at the beginning of each contest.
RESPONSIBILITY: DWU reports graduation rates from an IPEDs Report and lists
at least two objectives to increase the university’s graduation rate.
INTEGRITY: A “Coaches Code” and “Code of Ethics” are presented and signed by
all athletic staff and administrators. All DWU student-athletes receive, read and
sign a “Champions of Character” pledge. They are asked to uphold the code.
SERVANT LEADERSHIP: Student-athletes are asked to participate in at least one
community service activity.
SPORTSMANSHIP: A policy of no profanity in practice and game competition is
established.
Mitchell
a great college town
www.cityofmitchell.org
Mitchell, S.D., offers a unique college atmosphere to students
who attend Dakota Wesleyan University. The continually growing
city of roughly 15,000 people packages the feel of a close-knit
community into a city with endless resources for shopping,
entertainment and recreation.
Expanding commercial districts on the north and south ends
of town combine with Mitchell’s historic Main Street to provide
ample opportunities for shopping, dining, hotels and night life, as
well as job opportunities that value students’ talents and abilities.
Sioux Falls, just a 60-minute drive east on I-90, offers even more
big-city amenities to students and their families.
The city has both a state-of-the-art movie theatre and a drive-in
open during the warm-weather months, along with endless
opportunities for outdoor recreation. Mitchell is home to two 18-
hole golf courses, indoor and outdoor swimming pool facilities,
tennis courts, athletic fields, a hockey arena and numerous
recreation and fitness centers. Lake Mitchell provides boating,
swimming, fishing and camping opportunities, and the
surrounding area is well-known for its world-class pheasant
hunting.
Mitchell is known for the World’s Only Corn Palace, but this
South Dakota community has plenty to offer its college
students.
Mitchell is a safe, comfortable community that feels like home.
