Tiger Athletics
From the President
Hello to all Dakota Wesleyan
University students, athletes,
faculty, staff, alumni, fans, families
and friends, and welcome to
another exciting season of Tiger
part of the DWU family, and Dakota
Wesleyan sincerely appreciates
your devoted support.
We enter the 2011-12 academic
year with high hopes that this will
be an unforgettable year on the
DWU campus, both academically
and athletically. This year, we
renew our commitment to
academic excellence and student
engagement, and we look forward
to an exciting future. Throughout
our history, athletics have been an
important part of Wesleyan, and
that tradition continues as we
TIGERS
From the Athletic Director
Hello and welcome to the start of
another great season of Dakota
Wesleyan University athletics.
There has never been a better time
to be a DWU Tiger than right now.
We have an excellent group of
coaches in place who have their
goals set high and are committed
to taking their programs to new
heights in 2011-12 and beyond.
We have a first-rate group of
student-athletes who proudly
represent Dakota Wesleyan’s
values, and our athletic staff is
committed to helping our teams
excel.
Much of our success wouldn’t be
possible without the contributions
of the DWU TeamMakers booster
club and the DWU athletic
corporate sponsors. These
partnerships allow our coaches to
recruit the best possible studentathletes.
Both groups are
extremely dedicated to helping
provide a positive experience for
our student-athletes. I’d like to offer
a special thank you to the
TeamMakers and corporate
sponsors for your roles in Tiger
athletics.
Whatever your connection to DWU,
we’d like to invite you to be a part of
the Tiger athletic family as we
continue our journey to reach new
levels in both the NAIA and the
Great Plains Athletic Conference.
Welcome aboard, thanks for your
support and go Tigers!
CORN PALACE
TIGERS
A One-of-a-Kind Arena in a “Basketball Town”
Mitchell Corn Palace
The World’s Only Corn Palace attracts tourists from across the
country and the world each year, particularly during the summer
months. However, during the winter months the Corn Palace
transforms into one of the best small college and high school
basketball venues in the entire country. The Corn Palace, built
in 1892, seats 3,200 with stadium seating on one side of the
court and bleachers on the other side and both ends. Murals
celebrating South Dakota’s heritage, made entirely of corn,
adorn the inside of the arena.
In 2004, the Corn Palace was named one of the 10 best places
to watch high school basketball by USA Today, and it is
featured on nikebasketball.com’s Baller’s Network.
The Tigers enjoy a distinct home-court advantage thanks to its
unique and spectacular venue and the support it receives from
the DWU campus and the city of Mitchell, which is a bona fide
“basketball town.” In 2010-11, the Tiger men finished 13-2 at
the Corn Palace. DWU ended the 2010-11 season with a
seven-game home winning streak.
BASKETBALL PREVIEW
By LEAH RADO, Sports Information Director
After the most successful five-year stretch in school history,
the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team faces
the task of replacing one of the most prolific scorers ever to
come through the program.
Lucky for second-year head coach Shane Murphy, he has
several talented players ready to step in and take over the role
as the Tigers’ go-to scorer.
Brady Wiebe graduated in May as the fourth-leading
scorer in Tiger men’s basketball history. He finished his career
with 2,052 points, 1,097 rebounds, 270 assists, 153 steals and
125 blocked shots. He earned All-Great Plains Athletic
Conference First-Team honors for three seasons and was
named the GPAC Player-of-the-Year as a senior. Wiebe holds
the school record for free-throw accuracy in a game (100
percent, 2010-11), free throws in a season (285, 2010-11) and
free throws in a career (767). He is also just the second player
to earn three All-American honors in a career. He earned thirdteam
honors in 2009 and 2010 and first-team honors in 2011.
“We’re not going to replace Brady Wiebe with one guy,”
Murphy said. “I think the best thing we can do is try, by
committee, to cover that position, but then also put ourselves in
a position where we’re getting more out of our points and wings
in our system this year.
“I think that’s important; that we don’t think we’re going to
replace Brady by putting another body in there and doing the
same things we did. We’re going to have to change how we
play.”
Dakota Wesleyan, which went 24-9 and made it to the NAIA
National Tournament for the fifth straight season in 2010-11,
also lost its second- and third-leading scorers in Larry Swann
and Chase Walder, but it returns a solid core of starters and
bench players hungry for another trip to Point Lookout, Mo.,
come March.
Leading the way for the Tigers this season is senior
German Madueno (6-4, F, Woodland, Calif.). Madueno joined
the Tigers before last season and finished his first year with the
program, averaging 8.7 points per game – good for fourth on
the team. He was also second on the team in field-goal
percentage (.493).
Seniors Jordan Long (6-4, F, Mitchell, S.D.) and Jake
Kneeland (6-2, G, Summit, S.D.) enter their fourth and final
seasons with the Tiger men’s basketball program in 2011-12.
Both have been consistent players in their first three seasons
with the team, and they will be looked to for leadership and
experience this season. Long averaged 4.3 points and 3.2
rebounds per game as a junior, and Kneeland averaged 2.2
points per game.
“I think Jordan, just the way he plays, I don’t know if he
needs to do a whole lot more for us, but if he can come back
with the same tenacity on the rebounding and defense and
energy he brings, that’ll be great as a senior,” Murphy said. “I
think German has a chance to step up and have a great year. I
think he was limited because of what we did with Brady last
year, and I’m thinking he can break through and have a great
year for us shooting the basketball.”
Also returning are point guards Kris Wilson (5-11, G,
Lawrence, Kan.) and Justin Nelson (6-0, G, Gillette, Wyo.), as
well as forward Bo LaCroix (6-6, F, Hurley, S.D.).
Nelson took over as the team’s starting point guard as a
sophomore last season, and he proved to be a steady leader.
He also led the team – and the GPAC – in 3-point percentage
(.453). Wilson also saw time guiding the Tiger offense in his
first season with the program, and he became a valuable asset
off the bench. LaCroix averaged 2.7 points off the bench, but
he hit some big threes and made big blocks in key possessions
for the Tigers as a sophomore last season.
“I think Justin Nelson made some great strides, and he’s
been a great leader at the guard spot,” Murphy said. “Bo
LaCroix is a kid poised going into his junior year to blossom. I
think all the tools are there for him.”
In his first full offseason
with the Tigers, Murphy
added plenty of new talent to
help bolster the DWU roster.
At the top of his recruiting list
was freshman Jalen Voss, a
6-foot-7, 265-pound forward
from Worthington, Minn. Voss,
who averaged 19 points and
11 rebounds per game as a
senior and is the Worthington
High School career rebounds
leader, will look to help
replace Wiebe down low.
Another top local recruit
for Murphy was Corsica, S.D.,
standout Luke Bamberg.
Bamberg (6-6, F) helped his
Corsica/Stickney High School
team to the Class “B” state title
as a senior and averaged 12
points, eight rebounds and
five assists per game despite
missing part of the season
with a knee injury. Both Voss
and Bamberg will be looked
to for immediate
contributions.
“The key for us is with our
new guys,” Murphy said.
“Jalen Voss is one of those
guys we’re going to ask to
step into Brady’s position. Not
necessarily fill his shoes, but
he’s a guy who’s going to
have to play well for us if we’re
going to be successful.
That’s not easy to do as a
young guy, but I think we’ve
got a good one, and he’s up to
the challenge.
“Luke Bamberg is another
young kid who has great
athleticism and a great feel for
the game, and he comes out
every day battling and
competing. I think you’ll see
those two freshmen playing a
lot of minutes, and they need
to be good minutes.”
Murphy also signed
several key transfers,
including 5-foot-7 guard
Carde Pennington
(Chicago, Ill.) and 5-foot-11 guard Mike Lee (Detroit, Mich.).
Both players have junior eligibility and bring college-level
playing experience to the program. Lee joins the Tigers from
Owens Community College, where he was the starting point
guard and averaged 10 points and three assists per game as a
sophomore. Pennington played two seasons at Malcolm X
College; he also averaged 10 points and three assists per
game as a sophomore.
Junior forward Paul Burgess (6-9, Lancaster, Calif.) adds
height and experience to the DWU lineup after playing at
Grossmont Community College. Murphy also signed several
other local freshman, including Stephen Lee (6-6, F, Viborg,
S.D.), Kris Menning (6-4, G, Corsica, S.D.) and Jace
Eckstaine (5-11, G, Crooks, S.D.).
“Carde Pennington is very small, but extremely quick and
has about as soft a touch as I’ve ever seen, so we have to figure
out how to get him open and get him enough space so he can
use that soft jump shot,” Murphy said. “Mike Lee is a kid who
can be a big-time difference maker handling the ball, running
the point guard spot, attacking the basket, being a scorer and
being tenacious defensively. I think he can have a big impact
on the game night in and night out.
“Paul Burgess has battled injuries, but he’s a guy who will
add depth for us at the post spot if we can get him healthy.”
The Tigers were picked to finish fifth in the GPAC in the
preseason coaches’ poll, but Murphy said he’s not paying
attention to that right now.
Murphy hopes that the combination of returning players and
new signees is the right one to allow the Tigers’ successful run
as of late to continue this year, and also in the coming years.
“I think if we try to label this team as a GPAC contender or a
team that’s going to place third or fifth, that’s unfair to this group
just because of the newness that we have,” he said. “We need
to focus on developing this team to be the best it can be. I think
when we step out on the floor in early November all the way
through March, this group has the potential to be competitive
every game we play, and that will give us a chance to win.”
COACHES
TIGERS
SHANE MURPHY (South Dakota ’94)
Head Men’s Basketball Coach
Second Season (24-9, 1 year)
The 2010-11 season was one of
transition for the Dakota Wesleyan
University men’s basketball team with a
new head coach, but Shane Murphy
made sure that transition was a
seamless one. The Tigers ended
Murphy’s first season at the helm in the
same spot they had the past four
seasons – at the NAIA Men’s Basketball
National Championships in Point
Lookout, Mo.
Murphy, who enters his second
season with the Tigers in 2011-12, took
over the men’s basketball program after
its most successful season in history,
and he was able to continue that
success. Dakota Wesleyan finished the
year 24-9 and ranked No. 18 in the NAIA
Division II. It finished third in the Great
Plains Athletic Conference and made its
fifth straight trip to the national
tournament, where it upset No. 15
Grace College and advanced to the
Sweet 16 before falling to secondseeded
Northwood College.
The Tigers beat four top-10
opponents in 2010-11. They beat No. 6
Black Hills State University in overtime in
early November, and ended the season
with upsets of No. 8 Briar Cliff and No.
10 Northwestern College. All three wins
were at the World’s Only Corn Palace.
DWU also beat undefeated Xavier
University (La.), which was ranked No. 9
in the NAIA Division I, at a holiday
tournament in Miami, Fla.
Senior Brady Wiebe finished his fouryear
career as one of the most
decorated athletes in DWU men’s
basketball history. He became the
fourth player in DWU men’s basketball
history to score more than 2,000 career
points, and finished his career with
2,052 points and 1,097 rebounds. He
became the second three-time All-
American in men’s basketball history
when he earned All-American First-
Team honors. He was also named the
GPAC’s Player-of-the-Year and earned
All-GPAC First-Team honors.
Wiebe was also named to the Capital
One Academic All-District Team, and
he, along with Mark Mingo and Mitch
Reed, earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete
honors. Seniors Chase Walder and
Larry Swann were both named to the All-
GPAC Second Team.
Murphy took a two-year hiatus from
coaching to work as a recruiter for the
Principal Financial Group in Sioux
Falls, S.D., but before that, he led the
University of Sioux Falls men’s
basketball program to the most
successful stretch in school history.
Murphy was named the 2006 GPAC
Coach-of-the-Year and the 2002 South
Dakota Men’s College Coach-of-the-
Year. He led the Cougars to two
conference titles and two GPAC
Tournament titles in seven years of
coaching. Between 2001 and 2008,
Murphy led his squads to the most wins
in school history (154) with a .662
winning percentage and a singleseason
record of 28 wins in a season.
The Cougars were a constant on the
NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll, and they
were ranked No. 1 at one point in 2007.
Murphy coached USF to four NAIA
Division II National Tournaments in six
seasons, including a trip to the Final
Four in 2004. At USF, he recruited and
coached five All-Americans and 11 All-
GPAC players.
Before coaching at USF, Murphy
played and coached at the University of
South Dakota, his alma mater. He was
an assistant coach for the Coyotes from
1995-2001, and he helped USD to North
Central Conference titles in 1999, 2000
and 2001, and NCAA Division II National
Tournament appearances in 1999 and
2000. He was also a graduate assistant
at USD from 1994-95.
Murphy started his collegiate playing
career at Drake University and
transferred to USD after two seasons.
He led the Coyotes to two conference
and regional titles and was an All-
Conference, All-Region and All-America
Honorable Mention selection in 1994.
He received a Bachelor of Science
degree in business administration with
an emphasis in finance and human
relations from USD in 1994, and he
completed his Master of Business
Administration in 1996, also at USD.
Murphy and his wife, Jill, live in
Mitchell with their daughters, Allison, 15;
and Emma, 11.
“I think if we try to label this team as a GPAC contender or a
team that’s going to place third or fifth, that’s unfair to this group
just because of the newness that we have. We need to focus
on developing this team to be the best it can be. I think when
we step out on the floor in early November all the way through
• All conference championships were SDIC, except 1945-46
and 1946-47 when Dakota Wesleyan was a member of the
Dakota-Iowa Conference and 2009-10 when DWU was a
member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
• Dakota Wesleyan has won 28 conference championships.
• In 2009-10, DWU also won the GPAC Tournament title.
Tournament to Central Washington, ending the season
with a 26-3 record.
19 games in a row (1942-43)
The only losses that year were to Augustana during the
regular season and Cape Girardeau College of Missouri in
In 1945, DWU was invited to participate in the tournament, but
the coach declined because many basketball players were
serving in the armed services by tournament time.
• Three national tournament teams reached the quarterfinals:
1931-32 (AAU), 1938-39 and 1945-46 (NAIA).
• In 1937 and 1941, DWU finished second in the conference
but was invited to the tournament.
• In 1938, DWU finished fourth in the conference but won the
first playoff in the conference to qualify for the national
tournament.
• The first NAIA National Tournament was in 1937. Dakota
Wesleyan played the first game of that tournament, losing to
Southwestern Kansas 54-26.
• In 1939, DWU beat Texas West Teachers College, who were
billed, “The Tallest Team in the World.”
• DWU has appeared in more NAIA National Tournaments
(19) than any South Dakota College.
• No South Dakota college has appeared in more consecutive
NAIA national tournaments than Dakota Wesleyan (five from
1937-41 and 2007-11).
• DWU qualified for the NAIA National Tournament in 2006-07,
2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11. This ties the
school’s longest streak from the 1936-37 season through
the 1940-41 season when Wesleyan also had five
consecutive national tournament bids.
Tigers on
For 39 years running, KMIT 105.9 FM has
been a staple as Dakota Wesleyan
University’s Tiger Radio Network. KMIT will
once again serve as the flagship station for
DWU sports in 2011-12 with Tim Smith back
in the booth for his 39th year as the voice of
the Tigers.
Smith began covering DWU athletics in
1973, and he has announced hundreds of
Tiger athletic events in his 39-year career.
Smith has been recognized as the South
Dakota Sportscaster-of-the-Year four times
– including 2010 – and the South Dakota
High School Activities Association has also
recognized him for distinguished service.
He is the past president and a current
member of the DWU TeamMakers booster
club. In 2010, Smith was inducted into the
Bob Sprang and Tim Smith
DWU Athletic Hall of Fame for his
contributions to the Tigers. Smith and his wife, Sandi, have five children.
Joining Smith in the booth this season will be another name synonymous with DWU
athletics. Former Tiger football coach Bob Sprang returns this season as KMIT’s
basketball color commentator.
Sprang coached football for 44 years at the high school or collegiate level,
including two stints totaling 10 years at DWU. Sprang will also be the head coach of
Champions of Character
All Dakota Wesleyan University student-athletes and their coaches have taken a pledge, a commitment to the true spirit of
competition to become Champions of Character. This initiative of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics brings
formal emphasis to character development through respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
Athletes representing every sport at DWU raise their hands and vow to be true Champions of Character. By taking the
pledge, DWU athletes and coaches agree to follow a code of ethics established by the NAIA and adapted to fit DWU.
RESPECT: Information delivered by public address announcers at Dakota
Wesleyan events is neutral and information based, and a Champions of
Character announcement is read at the beginning of each contest.
RESPONSIBILITY: DWU reports graduation rates from an IPEDs Report and lists
at least two objectives to increase the university’s graduation rate.
INTEGRITY: A “Coaches Code” and “Code of Ethics” are presented and signed by
all athletic staff and administrators. All DWU student-athletes receive, read and
sign a “Champions of Character” pledge. They are asked to uphold the code.
SERVANT LEADERSHIP: Student-athletes are asked to participate in at least one
community service activity.
SPORTSMANSHIP: A policy of no profanity in practice and game competition is
established.
Mitchell
a great college town
www.cityofmitchell.org
Mitchell, S.D., offers a unique college atmosphere to students
who attend Dakota Wesleyan University. The continually growing
city of roughly 15,000 people packages the feel of a close-knit
community into a city with endless resources for shopping,
entertainment and recreation.
Expanding commercial districts on the north and south ends
of town combine with Mitchell’s historic Main Street to provide
ample opportunities for shopping, dining, hotels and night life, as
well as job opportunities that value students’ talents and abilities.
Sioux Falls, just a 60-minute drive east on I-90, offers even more
big-city amenities to students and their families.
The city has both a state-of-the-art movie theatre and a drive-in
open during the warm-weather months, along with endless
opportunities for outdoor recreation. Mitchell is home to two 18-
hole golf courses, indoor and outdoor swimming pool facilities,
tennis courts, athletic fields, a hockey arena and numerous
recreation and fitness centers. Lake Mitchell provides boating,
swimming, fishing and camping opportunities, and the
surrounding area is well-known for its world-class pheasant
hunting.
Mitchell is known for the World’s Only Corn Palace, but this
South Dakota community has plenty to offer its college
students.
Mitchell is a safe, comfortable community that feels like home.
