WELCOME
From the President
Greetings to all Dakota Wesleyan
University students, athletes, faculty,
staff, alumni, fans, families and
friends, and welcome to another
exciting season of Tiger athletics.
Our sports teams and studentathletes
are an essential part of the
DWU family, and Dakota Wesleyan
sincerely appreciates your devoted
support.
We enter the 2012-13 academic year
with hopes for another remarkable
year at DWU, both academically
and athletically. This year, our
commitment to academic excellence
and student engagement is embodied
in the construction of our new
Corrigan Health Sciences Center.
The project has energized all areas
of campus.
Throughout our history, athletics have
been an important part of Wesleyan,
and that tradition continues as we
anticipate success for our teams on
the field, court, course and track, as
well as in the classroom.
Whether with your presence at
athletic events or through your
monetary contributions, your support
of our school, students, athletes,
coaches and teams is greatly
appreciated. The Dakota Wesleyan
University family has never been
stronger, and for that, we offer our
sincere gratitude.
Welcome to 2012
T I G E R S
From the Athletic Director
As the new school year begins,
so does another year of Dakota
Wesleyan University athletics.
The 2012-13 season promises to be
another great one for all of our Tiger
athletic teams. Our coaches are
committed to taking their teams to
the next level at both the conference
and national level, and our studentathletes
have bought into that
commitment and share that same
drive to help Dakota Wesleyan excel
both on the field, in the classroom
and in the community.
Our success is made possible
through the contributions of the DWU
TeamMaker booster club and the
DWU athletic corporate sponsors.
These partnerships allow the athletic
department to recruit the best
student-athletes, and provide them
with an excellent college experience
once they get on campus. Both
groups are dedicated to this task,
and have been extremely involved in
Tiger athletics over the past several
years, and I would like to say thank
you to both the TeamMakers and
corporate sponsors.
As our DWU sports teams continue
to rise to new heights, we would like
to invite everyone to be a part of the
DWU athletic family. Thanks for your
support and go Tigers!
COACHES
T I G E R S
ADAM ANDERSON (Notre Dame ’01, ’03)
Six-time GPAC Golf Coach-of-the-Year
Head Golf Coach – Eighth Season
Phone: 605-995-2179 Email: adanders@dwu.edu
Consistent leadership and solid recruiting have been a winning
combination for Adam Anderson during his tenure as the head men’s and
women’s golf coach at Dakota Wesleyan University. Anderson is entering
his eighth season as the head of the Tigers’ golf programs, and both teams
are annually among the top of the standings in the Great Plains Athletic
Conference as well as rated in the NAIA Top 25.
The 2011-12 season was solid for the Tiger golf teams. The DWU
women continued their dominance in the GPAC with a conference
championship – their sixth under Anderson and their ninth in the past 10
years – and earned yet another trip to the NAIA Women’s Golf National
Championships. It was the DWU women’s seventh trip to nationals in
as many seasons under Anderson and ninth in a row overall. Anderson
received his fifth GPAC Women’s Golf Coach-of-the-Year honor, and DWU
also claimed bragging rights to the GPAC Women’s Golfer-of-the-Year as
senior Dani Bellet won the prestigious title for the fourth consecutive year.
Anderson also coached four All-GPAC selections, one All-American and one
NAIA Scholar-Athlete in 2011-12.
The DWU men’s team was young this past season, but the players
showed flashes of greatness and potential throughout the season. The
Tigers finished sixth in the conference standings and failed to qualify for
the national championships, but they recorded five top-five finishes. Two
Dakota Wesleyan men’s golfers earned All-GPAC honors. The Tigers lost
just two golfers from the 2011-12 roster to graduation, and they return all of
their top five from last season’s roster.
In his seven seasons at DWU, Anderson has won a total of seven GPAC
titles, three Region III titles and has made nine trips to the NAIA National
Championships. Additionally, he has been honored with six GPAC Coachof-the-Year
awards along with three NAIA Region III Coach-of-the-Year
honors.
On the women’s side, Anderson has coached two NAIA All-American
Honorable Mention golfers and two All-American First-Team golfers, six
GPAC Players-of-the-Year and three NAIA Region III Golfers-of-the-Year.
On the men’s side, Anderson has coached two PING/NAIA All-North Region
golfers. Overall, Anderson has had 44 All-Conference performers, 49
GPAC Players-of-the-Week and has had 16 NAIA Scholar-Athletes.
Coach Anderson believes Dakota Wesleyan offers a great opportunity
for competitive high school golfers who wish to take their game to the next
level. Besides having access to their beautiful home course, Wild Oak,
the Tigers also occasionally play at Lakeview. The Tigers’ challenging
schedule allows the men’s and women’s teams to compete in both fall and
spring golf seasons with some of the top teams in the Midwest and beyond.
Anderson uses a modern video camera and swing analysis software to help
aid golfers with any necessary swing changes between seasons. Each
team routinely plays six or seven events each season or up to 14 per year.
Furthermore, to fine-tune their skills before the spring tournaments begin,
Anderson offers any member of his team an opportunity to attend a spring
break golf trip to a southern location in the United States.
He came to DWU after spending three years teaching and coaching in
Oklahoma City and Kansas City, Mo., while working at various golf courses
as an assistant golf professional.
A four-year member of the Fighting Irish golf team at Notre Dame,
Anderson made the traveling team his final two years. His best season
came during his junior year when he was named to the NCAA Academic
All-America Team and the Big East Conference All-Conference Team in
1999-2000.
Anderson is married and lives in Mitchell with his wife, Heather. The
couple has two children – twins Jack and Ava.
Tyler Evenson
Assistant Golf Coach
Tyler Evenson begins his first
season as a graduate assistant
coach for the Dakota Wesleyan
University men’s and women’s golf
teams in 2012-13.
Evenson returns to Dakota
Wesleyan after a four-year career with the Tiger men’s golf
team from 2007 to 2011. He was a three-time All-Great
Plains Athletic Conference golfer, earning the honor as
a freshman, junior and senior. Evenson picked up four
individual victories in his career to go along with nine top-
10 finishes as a junior and senior.
Evenson graduated with a bachelor’s degree in
multimedia from Dakota Wesleyan in 2011, and he returns
to DWU to pursue a master’s degree in educuational policy
and administration.
The Lead, S.D., native recently married former DWU
All-American golfer, Dani Bellet, and they live in Mitchell.
THE TEAM
TIGERS
will build on experience
T I G E R S
2011-12 All-GPAC First Team
The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s golf team experienced
some growing pains in the 2011-12 season, but that’s to be expected
with only four upperclassmen on the roster.
The Tigers boasted seven sophomores and three freshmen
to go along with two seniors and two juniors in 2011-12, and the
underclassmen got plenty of experience at big-time meets. Dakota
Wesleyan fell shy of its goal of returning to the NAIA Men’s Golf
National Championships for the fourth time in school history, finishing
in sixth in the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings.
Junior Travis Johnson paced the Tigers, tying for fifth in the
individual GPAC race. He finished 12 strokes off the lead with a fourround
total of 308. He earned All-GPAC First-Team honors for the
second time in his career. Sophomore Josh Korn tied for 20th with a
320 and earned All-GPAC Honorable Mention accolades.
The young Tiger squad recorded five top-five finishes, including a
second-place finish at the Hastings College Invite on April 2. DWU
also finished third at its own Palace City Classic in the fall and tied for
third at the first GPAC Qualifier, hosted by Mount Marty College.
Individually, Johnson led the Tigers with six top-10 finishes and
three top-five finishes. His best finish was a tie for third at the
Wartburg College Invite. Korn also recorded three top-five finishes,
and sophomore Austin Hieb finished in the top five on two occasions.
Freshman Broderick Baker also had a breakout performance for
Dakota Wesleyan. He took second at the Hastings Invite on April 2
while competing for the Tiger JV team. Carson Moore and Max Bell
also recorded one top-10 finish apiece.
Head coach Adam Anderson, entering his eighth season with the
Tiger golf programs, returns a roster full of youth for 2012-13, but those
young golfers come back with plenty of experience. Dakota Wesleyan
lost just two golfers to graduation in Billy Jarrett and Adam Maloney,
and return both Johnson and Korn, along with Hieb and a number of
other golfers who saw time in the Tigers’ top-five rotation last season.
Anderson has secured four recruits for the Tiger men’s squad
in 2012-13, and all four hail from South Dakota. Brady Besco (Hot
Springs), Anthony Husher (Winner), Jay Determan (Burke) and Tyler
Burr (Bell Fourche) have all signed to compete with the Tigers starting
in the fall.
With the combination of talented new recruits and returning
veterans, Anderson is hoping to find the right combination of golfers to
bring Dakota Wesleyan back to where it wants to be – at the top of the
GPAC and competing at the national championships.
“We had a whole year of being close last season after graduating
three of our top five starters the previous season,” Anderson said.
“However, I feel that the guys learned a lot last season as a team, and
I am eager to get started again this year. Eight of the nine returning
golfers have actual varsity experience. When you combine that with
the fact that all five top players are returning – and we have also added
some talented freshmen – I expect this season to be very competitive
amongst the guys battling for playing time within our team.
“We should be able to successfully compete toward the top of the
conference, and I think the guys expect that as well. We have enough
talented and experienced players to make a serious run at winning the
GPAC title this year. We need to believe in our ability and execute in
tournaments at a corresponding level.”
