Dear Junior and Parents, 

We could not have asked for a better Spring Season! At times the Spring provided a 

true test of one’s golfing ability. Regardless, if it was wind and rain at Wolf 

Hollow or heat and humidity at Belk Park. However, many of our Junior’s 

prevailed and posted some low and impressive pre-season scores. You can see 

several of the results and recaps in this newsletter. 

The Gateway Junior PGA is excited to have four new summer interns for the 

2012 season! We have Alisha Matthews, who is a Gateway Junior PGA alumni 

and just wrapped up her college golf career at Southern Illinois University 

Carbondale. Nathan Jacquin, is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Sport Management 

from Southeastern Missouri State University and is another junior program 

alumni. Katie Caufield finished up her junior year at University of Kansas and is 

also a native to the Gateway Junior PGA. Last but not least, we have Kasey 

McCammack, who is pursuing a degree from Lindenwood University in Sports 

Management and also played on the Lindenwood Golf Team. Be sure to read 

more about the interns in the “Meet the Interns” section of this newsletter. 

Golfzilla now has a Facebook page! Be sure to like “Gateway Golfzilla” on 

Facebook. You can stay posted on which events Golfzilla will be by reading the 

“Growing the Game - Junior Style!” section of the newsletter. Also, sign ups for 

the College Combine have begun. Be sure to sign up if you have not done so yet! 

I hope the end of the school year is going well for everyone. Study hard and

YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE! 

The Gateway PGA’s First Ever Junior Play Golf America Day (held at Mid Rivers Golf Links 

on April 28) was a HUGE success! If you were not able to attend then… well, you missed 

out! Don’t worry, though. There’s always next year! 

Our Gateway PGA College Combine opened for Registration April 30th at 8:00 am. So far, 

21 juniors have signed up. Registration is limited to 80 juniors, so make sure you don’t miss 

out. Juniors who participate will go through a morning of golf evaluations and assessments in 

the areas golf skill performance, fitness/human performance, club evaluations, mental game 

analysis (optional), and short game tests. In addition, they will receive a Gateway PGA 

approved Combine Results Book with ranking/comparisons to current college players playing 

in various divisions across the country, a Combine Shirt, and a Practice and Playing/Statistics 

log. The event will be held at WingHaven Country Club on Saturday, June 16th from 

8:00 am – 12:00 pm. Cost is $50.00 per junior. 

Finally, as the Summer Series approaches with the promise of great golfing weather, I would 

like to take this opportunity to say how much I am looking forward to frequenting the links 

with you all while providing family fun golfing opportunities for everyone! It doesn’t matter 

how old you are or if you have any golf experience, Golfzilla is waiting for you!

Golf: It’s A Skin Game 

At this time of year, golf is a skin game. Golfers face a difficult, if not impossible, 

task in avoiding the sun. As golfers, we should be aware of the potential 

risk and do everything we can to avoid future damage to our skin. Therefore, 

sun protection products are a critical line of defense. 

Skin cancer may not be everyone’s favorite topic, but pay attention to the statistics: 

half of all new cancers diagnosed each year in the United States are 

skin cancers, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. May is 

Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, a good reminder for golfers to 

take the extra few minutes before each round to apply sunscreens, in order to 

prevent future skin problems that may keep them out of the game. 

Really, the solution is that simple: wear sunscreen, wear sunscreen, wear sunscreen. The good news is today’s 

products are non-greasy gels and sprays that won’t run, making them more golfer-friendly. 

The following specific “sun safety tips” from the American Academy of Dermatology will further help to 

prevent damage to your skin: 

- Avoid the sun between 10a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are strongest 

- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays, and has a Sun Protection Factor 

(SPF) of 15 or greater, even on cloudy days. Apply sunscreen about 20 minutes before exposure to the sun. 

-Reapply sunscreen every two hours when outdoors, even on cloudy days. 

-Wear protective, tightly woven clothing. Dark colors give more protection. 

-Wear a wide broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protective lenses. 

-Stay in the shade whenever possible. 

-Avoid reflective surfaces, which can reflect up to 85 percent of the sun’s damaging rays. 

Since May is Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, you might consider taking prevention one step 

further: get a skin screening with a dermatologist. To locate a screening near you, contact the American 

Academy of Dermatology at 847-330-0230. In the meantime, get out, play golf and enjoy time in the sun – 

after you apply the sunscreen!

Alisha Matthews 

I recently graduated from Southern Illinois University with a 

Bachelor's Degree in Recreation and Leisure Services 

Management. I played on the Saluki Women's Golf Team for all 

four years and helped them win 5 team titles along with an 

individual title at the SIUE Intercollegiate. At the 2012 Missouri 

Valley Conference Championship, I broke a Conference scoring 

record by shooting a 67 in the final round, helping my team to a 

3rd place finish and earning a place on the MVC all Conference 

Team. If it was not for the Gateway Junior PGA I would not be 

the player I am today. I am excited to give back to a program 

Nathan Jacquin 

I am currently a senior at Southeast Missouri State University 

finishing my B.S. in Sport Management. I have been playing golf 

since I was 7, and I have participated in the Gateway 

Junior PGA when I was in high school. I enjoy the outdoors 

especially hunting and fishing. I am really excited to be an 

intern with the Gateway PGA for the summer and I hope it leads 

to great things. 

Kasey McCammack 

I am a former Lindenwood Lady Lion Golfer, where I was a 

captain my senior year. I had the opportunity to be a part of a 

team that won the Heart of America Athletic Conference in 2011 

where I was on the all-conference team. During my two years, I 

was part of a team that had (6) 1st place finishes and (9) 2nd 

place finishes from Aug. 2010-May 2012. Currently I am pursuing 

a degree in Sport Management and have a year of experience in 

the golf industry from Persimmon Woods in St. Charles, MO. 

I am excited to work with the Juniors in the Gateway section! 

Katie Caufield 

My name is Katie Caufield and I am a junior at University of 

Kansas. Currently I am pursuing a Masters of Architecture major. 

I have a love and passion for the game of golf and used to play in 

the Gateway Jr. PGA. I also have some experience working with 

juniors through the Paradise Valley Golf junior program. The 

Gateway PGA provided me so many opportunities and I am 

excited to give back to the program! I can’t wait to get the 

season started and meet all the members of our program!
