The Future of Junior Golfers
By Gia Fanelli
There are many options for a junior golfer as they progress
in their career, such as: competing in collegiate golf, becoming
a PGA Professional, or playing golf recreationally.
All three of these paths can help a junior golfer shape their
life and career.
Competing in collegiate golf:
• Know your facts!
ο Do you know the difference between playing
Division I, II and III
ο What type of team personality and coaching style do
you work best with
• Learn more on the University’s website
ο Tournament schedule
ο Biographies
ο Practice facilities
• Understand the commitments
ο Workout schedule
ο Grades expectations
ο Social life restrictions
Junior Ryder Cup Academy
The Junior Ryder Cup Academy was a wonderful experience
for all participants and leaders. Below is a summary from
Gateway Junior PGA’s Zach Gollwitzer and his experience in
Port St. Lucie, FL. To read more comments from others who
attended this extraordinary event, please click HERE .
The overall experience opened my mind about golf from a
self centered sport to a team sport. I honestly enjoy the
game more now after this incredible week. I think I have
learned from all the PGA instruction and the stories from
the former pros that golf isn't all about trying not to mess up
but is about enjoying the good holes and not dwelling on the
bad ones. I asked Hal Sutton how I can get off to a better
start on the first hole of a tournament and his reply was:
"My best rounds ever started with a bad hole."
The PGA Golf Management Program:
• Earn a bachelor’s degree along with PGA Certification
ο Required internships
ο Informational seminars
• Playing ability
ο Must pass Playing Ability Test
ο Each program conducts tournaments and player
development clinics
Recreational Golf:
• Spend valuable time with family
ο Have fun and be active together
• Connect with business contacts
ο Most business deals are made on the golf course
• Learn valuable life lessons
ο Honesty
ο Respect
ο Courage
A Fluid Swing Means Plenty of Water in Hand
Are you aiming for a fluid swing Easy tip: keep a water bottle in
hand – and not just because you’ll be thirsty during a good workout
on the golf course. Lack of water is the number one trigger of
daytime fatigue; therefore, drinking plenty of fluids is an important
part of the sports experience.
Dehydration is caused by increased muscular activity that leads to
an increase in heat production in the body; this is dissipated, in
part, through the production of sweat. If these fluids are not replaced,
you run the risk of cramps, heat exhaustion, and lifethreatening
heat stroke. “A good way to test for hydration is level
of your urine color: if it’s dark yellow, you’re not getting enough
fluids” says Larry Kenney, a professor of physiology at Pennsylvania
State University and former president of the American College
of sports Medicine. If you are thirsty, it likely means you are
already dehydrated.
Sports performance is also directly affected by a lack of fluids. For
instance, dehydration significantly decreases concentration levels
and depletes our endurance. Even a 2 percent drop in body water
can trigger fuzzy short-term memory. Fatigue caused by lack of
proper hydration causes overall performance levels to fall short.
In order to properly prevent dehydration, water must be replaced
at a faster rate than it’s lost. The goal is to drink 8-10 glasses of water on a normal day. That means we need to
drink more on a hot day. It is best to hydrate prior, during and after exercise.
Nearly 75 percent of Americans are chronically dehydrated. Drinking tea or coffee is better than drinking nothing,
but they are diuretics. Caffeine after exercise on a hot day can further dehydrate.
Next time you’re headed to the golf course, grab that sports bottle filled with water so you’ll remain strong in your
game and fluid in your swing.
How to Safe from Lightning on the
Golf Course
By Brent Kelley, About.com Guide
Because they are generally open areas with scattered individual trees, golf
courses are dangerous places during a thunderstorm. They are made more
dangerous during periods of lightning by the fact that golfers play our game
with metal implements. Here are some tips from the Golf Course
Superintendents Association of America for avoiding danger when
lightning is in the area during your round of golf.
Here's How:
1. Seek shelter at the first sign of a thunderstorm. If the course's warning system sounds, head for cover.
2. If possible, get off the golf course or go to a designated lightning shelter (note: open-sided buildings do not provide protection
from lightning even if they have a lightning rod).
3. Do not stand under a lone tree. This is where most people are injured or killed.
4. Stay away from water.
5. Stay away from your golf clubs.
6. If your shoes have metal spikes, take them off.
7. Move away from your golf cart.
8. If stranded in the open, go to a low place such as a ravine or valley. (Note: If you feel a tingling sensation and the hair on
your arms stands up, squat in a baseball catcher's position, balancing on the balls of your feet, feet together, arms in
front of your knees. If in a group, members of the group should keep at least 15 feet apart.)
