Executive Director
Executive Director Report
What great drama in Sunriver, Oregon at the 2013 PGA Professional
National Championship. It really is something to watch
over 300 of the best club professionals in the country tee it up for
the opportunity to be one of the twenty PGA Professionals invited
to the PGA Championship. I want to congratulate our four representatives:
JC Anderson, Gideon Smith, Bob Gaus, and Mark
Faulkner. Getting through the local Gateway PGA Qualifier is
hard in its own right and is all the validation needed to be considered amongst the
best playing club professionals. I think it is a treat to be able to watch live coverage
of the PNC on the Golf Channel. The PGA of America does a terrific job of creating
the same atmosphere as the Sr. PGA Champ, PGA Champ, and the Ryder Cup.
So with that said two Gateway PGA Professionals rose to the challenge. Bob Gaus
was in the Top 15 after each of the first three days. He put himself in great position
coming down the homestretch but back to back bogeys on 17 and 18 put him into a
six-man playoff for three spots. Gaus answered the bell with a great birdie on the
first playoff hole to punch his ticket. JC Anderson had a slightly different track. JC
hovered just under par to couple over through the first three rounds. On the final
day, all that changed. JC got off to a great start and never let off the accelerator. It
was great to see him get it going and record a 67 which was the low round of the
day. When all was said and done, Anderson jumped 18 spots – good enough for a tie
for fourth. So please join me in wishing Bob Gaus and JC Anderson all of the best
as they compete for the 95 th PGA Championship in Rochester, NY.
I would also like to take a moment to recognize two great partners of the Section.
Sterling Cut Glass has been supporting our Section and tournament program for so
many years. As many of you know, they not only provide some of the best crystal
and glassware but they have always been a dear friend to the PGA Professional. I
ask you to consider Sterling Cut Glass if you do not already use them. Additionally,
they are the title sponsor of the Team Championship.
A relatively new partner to the Gateway PGA is JaniKing. The folks at JaniKing are
committed to providing PGA facilities with some of the best pricing and professional
cleaning services that you can find. They have been a pleasure to work with and
they are looking forward to networking through the Section to provide you with a no
obligation estimate. If you are not using JaniKing, please consider and I assure you
that you will not be disappointed.
All the best,
GROWTH OF THE GAME
The Growth of the Game Committee is 0 for 2 in its Free Community Events
this year! Family Golf Night was postponed due to rain on May 4 th . Women’s
Golf Day was also postponed due to, yes, MORE RAIN, on June 22 nd . When
new dates are finalized for each event, we will pass along that information. For
now, I hope you’re making it through this crazy weather in style – galoshes
are trendy this year!
The first year of the Junior Development Tour (Mini and Novice 9 Divisions)
has been a great success, so far. With eight events completed, the parents have seen great value
and the kids have had a ball! The involvement of the host PGA Professional at every event
is a huge contributor to this program’s success. Thank you to all golf professionals/facilities
who have hosted us so far. The kids are having a blast!
ASSISTANTS CORNER
Now that we are into the summer I hope that everyone’s golf season is finally picking up.
The Assistants 2-Man Tournament is underway. Quarterfinal matches are being finished up
now and the semifinal round should start in a couple of weeks. The team of Roger Welch and
Shane Blankenship has advanced to the semifinal round with a win versus Laith Ali and Adam
Betz. Also into the semifinal round is Ryan Collom and Loel Fischer who won versus Aaron
Coon and Cameron Faulkner.
Michael Leotta, PGA
Keep the calendar open for our Assistants Championship coming up on September 3 at Greenbriar Hills. Registration
opens up on August 12.
RULES CORNER
By now many clubs will have started or will be starting match play tournaments. I would
suggest looking at Rule 2-5. Remember, The Committee may only consider a claim if it is
made in a timely manner.
I received a call from Jimmy Bals at Westborough last week. A player came into the shop after
a match had gone to sudden death. The opponent questioned whether a player had properly
identified his ball. Jimmy told me nothing was said on the course when the incident
occurred. I asked if anything was said before the players left the final putting green. Again
Jesse Barge, PG
Master Professional
the answer was no. With these facts we know the claim was not made in a timely manner. The Committee could
only consider this later claim if the opponent had not been aware of the facts and the player had given "Wrong
Information" as outlined in Rule 9. Thus the outcome of the match stands with the player winning on the 19th
hole.
Become familiar with Rules 2-5 and Rule 9. Then when a doubt or dispute arises your first question should be
"was a claim made". If the answer is yes be sure the claim was made in a timely manner. Then, and only then,
you should consider the claim by looking into the facts that raised the doubt or dispute.
EMPLOYMENT CORNER
Tim Marks, PGA
PGA Employment
Consultant
For Assistants - Improving Your Position in the Industry
Maintaining good relationships has to be a priority today. It is critical in keeping a job as well as
getting another step forward in your career. I am often asked “How do I land my first Head
Professional position, or how can I help myself to get noticed” While my initial answer is to
craft a powerful and concise resume and update your CareerLinks profile, there is more to it than
that. Building a wide array of relationships may be the most important.
Start with your employer. Adjust your work style and communications to mirror those of
your boss. Check in to find out how you can assist in reaching other goals or deadlines.
Always find ways to take on more and be more helpful. If you are doing a stellar job, he/she will spread the word
and that may just land a new opportunity.
Reaching out to your customers is critical too. Be as visible as possible. Be open and accommodating. Invite
them to play in pro-ams, or just to play. As with your boss, find more ways to be helpful to them. It is often a
recommendation from those you serve that creates different opportunities.
Being connected in your community can also matter. Word will spread if you have good interpersonal skills.
When you get involved by volunteering, it is also a good way to showcase your skills.
Lastly, remember to stay connected to your fellow PGA professionals. This can easily be done by picking up the
phone now and then to chat. When you visit other facilities, spend a couple of minutes chatting with the host
professional. Also attend chapter and Section events. “Work the room” so as to connect with as many as possible.
You can also improve your position, or “get noticed” by doing the following;

Sit down with your boss and discuss your career plan and your networking needs. Working together on this
will be beneficial for both of you.
Become a member of LinkedIn and connect with as many peers and others in the organization as possible.
Use this as an addition to your credentials and put your LinkedIn URL in the header of your resume and cover
letter. Send me a connection request if you like!
Create your own web site and use it as an “add-on” to your credentials. Highlight your strengths; create a
welcome video, etc. to help showcase your talents and accomplishments.
Start everything you do with “Why”. If you need to rediscover the “How Great Leaders Inspire Action” video
by Simon Sinek click here.
Start today by reaching out in ways you haven’t done before. In creating and nurturing relationships, you will also
be creating opportunities to improve your position in the industry.
Let’s keep the rain away for a while and grow some golf! Happy 4 th of July!
Best Golf Jokes
By: T.J. Auclair, Interactive Producer, PGA.com
Who doesn't love a good golf joke Yeah, that's what
we thought.
In the mood for some golf humor, we asked our
friends in PGA.com Facebook Nation to entertain us
this week, asking the question: What's your best golf
joke
Of course, we asked you to keep it clean (not everyone
could follow those instructions. That doesn't
mean your joke wasn't hilarious -- it just wasn't eligible
here).
Here they are, the best (clean) golf jokes submitted
by you:
9. "Bad day at the course," a guy tells his wife.
"Charlie had a heart attack on the third hole."
"That's terrible!" she says.
"You're telling me," the husband replies. "All day
long, it was hit the ball, drag Charlie." -- Kevin Kinney
8. Guy gets to a long par 3 over water. A voice from
above says, "Hit the new Titleist Pro V."
The guy tees up the Titleist and takes a practice
swing.
The voice comes back, "Never mind, hit a range
ball." -- Tom Schipper
7. A U.S. citizen is vacationing on his own in Ireland.
He decides to play a round of golf and is paired
with three local gents. He takes a few practice
swings, steps up to the first tee, and proceeds to
hook the ball out of bounds. He shakes his head,
reaches in his pocket, and re-tees another ball. He
tells his playing partners that he is taking a Mulligan.
He pounds one down the center of the fairway about
280 yards out.
With a big smile, he asks the others "In the U.S., we
call that a Mulligan; was wondering what you called
it here in Ireland."
After a moment of silence, one of the locals replies,
"Hitting three." -- Cathy McCartney Happel
6. A golfer walks off the 18th green, hands his putter
to his caddie and says, "Kid, you've got to be the
worst caddie in the world."
The caddie replies, "Sir, that would be too much of a
coincidence." -- John Dorsey
5. A man was addressing the ball when an announcement
came over the loud-speaker: "Will the gentleman
on hole number one please not hit from the Ladies'
tee box."
The man backs away, a little distracted, then approaches
his ball again. As he does, the same announcement
comes over the loud-speaker: "Will the
gentleman on hole number one please not hit from
the Ladies' tee box."
The man is getting irritated now, and after backing
away from his shot - approaches his ball one more
time. This time the announcement came: "We really
need the gentleman on hole number one to move off
of the Ladies' tee box!"
To which the man turns around and yells: "And I
really need the announcer to
shut up and let me play my
second shot!" -- Derick A.
Pindroh
4. A married couple played
golf together everyday.
One day the man and his
wife were on the first tee of
Best Golf Jokes continued
their local course. He
was on the white tee and
she was waiting in front
of him by the ladies tee.
He teed off and caught
the ball perfectly; unfortunately
it hit his wife
smack in the back of the
head killing her instantly.
She fell face down on the tee, didn't know what hit
her.
They had an inquest on the wife's death, the coroner
said it was clear how she died, she was killed by a
golf ball, and that there was a perfect imprint of a
golf ball on the back of her head.
The husband said, "Yes, that was my ball"
The coroner then went on to say that he was a bit
concerned to find a ball inserted up the woman's
backside, and could the husband throw some light on
this
The husband said, "Oh that must have been my provisional.
I wondered where it went." -- Kris E. Wilson
3. Four old men went into the pro shop after playing
18 holes of golf.
The pro asked, "Did you guys have a good game today"
The first old guy said, "Yes, I had three riders today."
The second old guy said, "I had the most riders ever.
I had five."
The third old guy said, "I had seven riders, the same
as last time."
The last old man said, "I beat my old record. I had
12 riders today."
After they went into the locker room, another golfer
who had heard the old guys talking about their game
went to the pro and said, "I've been playing golf for
a long time and thought I knew all the terminology
of the game, but what's a rider"
The pro said, "A rider is when you hit the ball far
enough to actually get in the golf cart and ride to it."
-- Howard P. Curtis
2. Two men ran out to the course for a quick nine
after work. They get to the tee and see two ladies
playing ahead of them.
One of the men complains that the ladies will slow
them down and says he is going to ask if they can
play through. He goes halfway to the ladies and
turns back.
The other man asked what was wrong. The man said,
"I can't go up there that's my wife and my mistress."
So the other man says he will go. He goes halfway
and comes back. His partner asked what happened
and the man replied, "Small world, huh" -- Tom
Bach
1. A Baptist pastor decides to play hooky on a Sunday
to play golf. He's playing the best golf of his life
when an angel asks God, "Are you going to let this
slide Do something!"
So God says, "Watch this."
The pastor hits a 425-yard tee shot and the ball goes
in the hole for a double eagle. The angel asks, "Why
did you reward him"
God says, "Who is he gonna tell" -- Jay Jamasey
Song.
Levine has Huge Payday Winning
Tower Tee Invitational
Dave Levine of Bridgeton Berry Hill GC collected one
of the biggest wins of his career, firing a 4-under par
50, to win the 2013 Tower Tee Invitational. Levine
made 6 birdies and just 2 bogeys on a tough, windy
day, to top the 73 player field. Finishing just a stroke
back was Ryan Martin of Bellerive CC who finished
the day at 3-under par 51. Rob Sedorcek of St. Albans
CC and Jimmy Bals of Westborough CC tied for 3rd at
2-under par 50.
In the Amateur Division, top honors were split by Pat Riordan and Skip Berkmeyer who tied at 2-
under par. Mike Williams was 3rd at 1 over par and 4th place went to Brian Greene.
The event was sponsored by Dr. Anthony Guarino as well as Senior Pique Restaurant.
Faulkner & Fogt Take Southern Illinois Open
Honors
Mark Faulkner endured heat, rain, wind, and a playoff, to top Zach Barlow
for the 2013 Southern Illinois Open title at Crab Orchard GC. After 36
holes, the pair was tied at 1-under par 139 and went back to the par 4 1st
hole to determine the champion. After Barlow just missed his birdie try
and made par, Faulkner rolled in his birdie putt which he had hit his approach
to inside 5 feet. The 54 player field was slowed by a 2 plus hour
rain delay in between rounds. Britt Pavelonis & Adam Betz tied for 3rd
place at 2 over par, while Mike Tucker & Jeff
Escott finished tied for 5th at 3-over par.
In the Senior Division, Brian Fogt posted a low round of the day of 2-under
par 68 to take the Senior Title. Four players finished 2 shots back to tie for
2nd place with rounds of even par 70 included, Steve Heckel, Bill Hall,
Mark Faulkner, and Steve Lotz.
Gaus wins 3rd Consecutive Senior Match Play
Championship
Bob Gaus is proving to be the man on a mission
when it comes to Match Play in the Gateway
Section of the PGA. After finishing in the runner-up
spot to Mike Suhre in the Regular Match
Play last month, Gaus was not to be denied as
he swept his matches on the way to his 3rd title
in a row at Sunset Hills CC in the Sr. Division.
Gaus won his first two matches 5 & 4 over
Doug Castellari and Steve Lotz. His final
match opponet was JC Anderson, who was
coming off 2 hard fought victories, both of
which ended on the 18th hole, over Mark Marcuzzo and Brian Fogt. The final match
was close all the way to #14 when Gaus powered ahead to win 4 & 3.
Simple Ways to
Maintain Summer Fitness
Looking for some easy ways to maintain or improve your fitness this summer
Three words: move, hydrate, breathe. Add a consistent plan and you’ll stay on
track.
MOVE
Make sure you get some daily activity in your life—by walking, swimming, biking,
yoga, gardening, or some other movement that gets your heart rate up.
More helpful: Include some weight training and stretching movements.
HYDRATE
Along with drinking plenty of water and other healthful drinks, eating nutritional foods
will help you stay hydrated. Foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteins
work to keep your energy up and help you maintain focus.
More helpful: Plan to drink eight glasses of liquid a day, primarily
water. Avoid caffeine and alcohol. If you drink alcohol, have a
glass of water, too.
BREATHE
Breathing keeps oxygen moving in your body and helps you maintain
energy. It also improves focus, relaxes muscles, and reduces stress. And obviously, being relaxed
and focused is a big plus for your golf game, right
More helpful: One way to practice breathing is by inhaling slowly through
the nose—Then exhaling slowly either through the nose or mouth. Begin to
follow the breath in and out of your body. Put a rhythm to your breath and
match that rhythm in your pre-swing routine. Notice how the rhythm of your
breath relaxes your body, mind and spirit.
Following this simple, yet important three-step plan for your summer fitness will
keep you conditioned and ready for golf.
