Students from St. Paul's in Bloomer, St Peter's in Tilden and St. Joseph's in Cadott joined with the CACS family; students, parents, grandparents, friends, parishioners, teachers and staff that came together to celebrate the Liturgy of the Eucharist with their bishop. Children representing each of the schools led the procession before Mass, carrying their school banners, followed by deacons, priests of the area and Bishop Listecki, the principal celebrant. During his homily, the Bishop talked about his recent visit to Santa Cruz Parish in Bolivia, founded 50 nyears ago through the efforts of the Diocese of La Crosse missionary priests. He also visited the other diocese mission, Casa Hogar Juan Pablo II, an orphanage in Lima, Peru. Bishop Listecki instilled in the students and the congregation how blessed we truly are to have a mother, a father and family to love us. St. Angela Merici, the saint of the day, was dedicated to teaching for the purpose of re-Christianizing family life through solid Christian education. Bishop Listecki told the high school students “Be proud of your Catholic education and the service of the religious before you. He also congratulated McDonell for being recognized for the second year in a row as one of the top 50 Catholic high schools in America by the Acton Institute. Lastly, Bishop Listecki recognized Deacon Rider and Deacon Kinnick who were celebrating the second anniversary of their diaconate ordination. A true gift to be cherished forever. Father Brian Jazdzewski, pastor of the Church of Notre Dame, Christmas message reflects the gift a child will receive with a Catholic education, the love of Christ. The year 1999 was the first Christmas I celebrated as a priest. That date is important inasmuch as Christmas 2008 is my tenth as a priest. The assignment to serve in Chippewa Falls was made by the man we now know as Archbishop Raymond L. Burke. I have been blessed to be part of the Chippewa Area Catholic Schools in some way, shape or form over these years. I have joined many of you as part of an audience among the young people you call your children. What a joy we all see in watching any child perform in front of audiences of people who support and love them. Each of these children changed your lives. On the other hand, these Christmas’ past have changed in the secular world from Merry Christmas to Happy Holidays! Businesses, media and even some people of good will have fallen to the temptation to take Jesus out of this time of year. I applaud people who strive to be counter-cultural today by insisting on calling this time of year the Christmas season. Just imagine what Christmas carols would be like if Christmas was taken out of the songs. Now, more than ever, we must Keep Christ in Christmas as the Knights of Columbus have helped us remember. We know that children have impacted our lives. Somehow, Christmas joy and satisfaction is just not meaningful enough until we see a child surprised by a generous gift they have been longing for. That is a sensation they will strive to return to others for the rest of their lives. Those moments should draw our attention to God who has given us a great gift in the gift of life. Furthermore, they should draw our attention to a God who took on human flesh in the life of a child who forever changed the course of world events. The love that He showed us is what we strive to return in how we treat each other. Sadly, I hear from some parents how public schools are choosing to present Holiday Programs in place of traditional Christmas Programs. Once again, this Advent, I attended the Christmas Program at Saint Charles Borromeo Primary School where the true story of Christmas was dramatized by the students there. My reflection quickly turned to how blessed we are to have a school where the gift of children are intentionally given the gift of faith each day through the example of their parents, teachers, staff and each other. In light of current cultural values, I cannot think of a better ongoing gift to give to a child than a Christian education in a Catholic school. I am so proud of what Catholic education is doing to help us maintain a culture where the child Jesus is central to what we do and all of us can continue uniting our voices and say Merry Christmas! 2 ALL - SCHOOL NEWS
From the Dean Very Rev. Donald Bauer
O
nce again I find myself in the delightful position of congratulating
the students and staff of McDonell Central
Catholic High School, for the second year in a row, for their
outstanding achievement in being awarded the Catholic
High School Honor Roll, the best 50 Catholic secondary
schools in the United States for 2008. I also thank all our
benefactors for their continued support of CACS through
their spiritual and financial gifts. I am encouraged by your
deep rooted conviction of the importance of a Catholic
Education. I especially wish to thank the parents of the students
for providing an environment which fosters spiritual
and intellectual growth.
We ask ourselves, what is/should be, the one common
thread that joins together the fabric of Catholic schools,
businesses, parishes, and parents It is the putting forth into
action the principles of
our Catholic faith. What
I am thinking about
more specifically is best
portrayed by a poem,
written by Mollie
Meagher, a McDonell
student, who won 1st
place in a local newspaper
competition. Miss Meagher’s poem laments a contemporary
culture which must maintain a silence about Christ and
the Blessed Virgin Mary and take a back seat to the secular
world. Miss Meagher’s poem is witness to an answer to this
problem, to proudly proclaim our faith, the Catholic faith,
and Jesus Christ.
I share the opinion of a certain writer who states that
making positive moral changes through our political
process should no longer be our major frontal attack. In a
system which is systematically more hostile to Catholicism,
and the many “Catholic” groups which may or may not support
the teaching of the Church, we have reached a time
when we need to, more then ever, be a witness to a
Christian principled lifestyle that will draw the attention of
others, as did the lives of the first Christians draw attention
to an enviable life in love of Christ and neighbor. Because
vices and virtues are deep rooted, changes will probably not
come about quickly. We can point fingers to all possible
problems, but in the end our own salvation is determined
by what each one of us did while on this earth. Therefore let
us live out our faith, proud to be Catholics, and proclaiming
the gospel by word and deed. ■
McDonell/Notre Dame Chaplain
Fr. James Weighner
D
ear Students, Staff and Alumni,
This issue of the Mack Messenger brings us
close to the season of Lent, and we cannot enter
into this season without thinking of fasting, alms
giving and prayer. I would like to focus on the theme of fasting in this column.
First, why we fast and then the fasting requirements. Often times, fasting is seen
as something we have to do as Catholics. We all know that before Vatican II you
could tell who the Catholics were on Fridays because we did not eat meat. One
of the most common mis-conceptions about Vatican II is that it did away with
this requirement. In fact, the council reinforced the value of fasting and making
sacrifices for ourselves and others, with Friday being the day we traditionally do
these things. As Catholics, we can choose to make the sacrifice of not eating
meat on Fridays, or select another sacrifice to offer up. We live in a world where
there is an abundance of everything. Almost any desire we have; food, entertainment,
gadgets, etc. can be instantly satisfied. Fasting does not only apply to
food, but to anything that might stand between us and God. It gives us a chance
to slow down and simplify our lives. We fast to attain spiritual growth, a deeper
relationship with God. It is not the fast itself that we honor, but rather the joy
and goodness that fasting brings.
Ask any of our athletes who have gone through a serious injury about their
physical therapy, and you will find that this is a painful, trying time. Spiritual
therapy is no different. It is a time of stretching and bending in ways we are not
used to, but just like the athlete returning to their sport, spiritual therapy will
bring healing, forgiveness and love into our lives, and those close to us. Fasting,
alms giving and prayer are the three key components to everyone’s spiritual program,
and remember, it is not just for Friday's during Lent.
God bless. Fr. Weighner
Lenten Fasting Requirements
Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast
on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, all Catholics
14 years old and older must abstain from meat on Ash
Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent.
Fasting, as explained by the U.S. bishops, means partaking
of only one full meal. Some food (not equaling another full
meal) is permitted at breakfast and around midday or in the
evening - depending on when a person chooses to eat the
main or full meal.
Another Successful Alumni Association Craft Country Expo
The Craft Country Expo was held on November 22nd. It was very successful. Over 2000 shoppers enjoyed crafts from over 85 vendors. There is an amazing
amount of talent and creativity displayed in everything from candles to woodcarvings. This was the 24th craft show sponsored by the McDonell Alumni
Association. The alumni association was approached back in 1985 by an area crafter about the possibility of holding a fall craft show. Wanda Peloquin Meagher,
class of 1940, took on the project and provided great leadership in establishing the new craft show. There is still a dedicated core group that has worked on every
craft show since the first. (Phyllis Goettl ‘59, Katie Kopp ‘47, Dick ‘53 and Lavonne ‘52 Marquie and Julie Clark ‘73) Many, many others have worked multiple
years and deserve great thanks. Special mention to Jane Bangen ‘83 (who drives 6 hours each way from Normal, IL to help run the show), concession call chair
Babette Hurt and admission chair Bonnie Hayes. Current McDonell students, including members of the junior and senior class and the girls and boys basketball
teams, contribute invaluable assistance with set up and clean up. Most workers at the sale comment, "This is fun. Call me again next year". Proceeds from the
sale are used for the needs of McDonell High School.

ALUMNI NEWS 3
A L U M N I S P O T L I G H T
Tom Huffcutt “VP of Operations, Outdoorsman”
by Tim Huffcutt, class of 1985
Those who know Tom Huffcutt, class of 1981, occasionally
muse about his ability to manage career, family
and volunteer responsibilities - all with a little in reserve
at week’s end to pursue his passion for silent sports and
game hunting.
For Tom, the educational roots were established
growing up in the 1970s while attending St. Charles
Elementary School and, from 1978-1981, McDonell
Central. He, along with fellow seniors Tom Davis and
Buck Hebert, led the 1981 basketball team to the
Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association state basketball
tournament, the first time in a generation that a
McDonell team had qualified.
Tom, a UW-Madison alumnus,
later earned a Masters in training
and human resources development
from UW-Stout. His
career experience includes
companies Compaq Computer,
Cray Research and 13 years at
Honeywell, as a plant manager
and then human resources
manager before accepting
Tom Huffcutt
Chippewa Valley Technical
College (CVTC) human
resources director position.
In August 2008, Tom was promoted to Vice President
of Operations at CVTC. The current CVTC President
Bruce Barker speaks highly of Tom in their annual report,
“Tom is a broadly talented executive and superior communicator.
He listens and speaks in a manner that instills
confidence in his honesty, and his experience in human
resources will serve the college well.”
In his previous role as CVTC Director of Human
Resources, Tom was occasionally called on by CACS to
consult on personnel matters and other HR issues. Mary
Beth (Nesja) Huffcutt, Tom’s wife of 19 years, meanwhile,
is an Education Specialist with Wisconsin Educational
Opportunity Programs, in Eau Claire and a Program
Coordinator for UW-Eau Claire’s Continuing Education.
She has also served on the Education Commission for
CACS, along with numerous other committees. Together
they manage a predictably busy household that includes
school and the extracurricular activities of three boys:
Jacob, 14; Sam, 11; and Joey, 9.
The couple returned 10 years ago to the community
where they grew up, desiring to raise their boys closer to
family. Another influencer was the excellent local school
systems; both were excited about the emphasis on values,
family and morality that are core to the Catholic Schools
curriculum.
It is a fundamental belief in the value of education
that drives the Huffcutts’ day-to-day decisions. Their
interest in quality education manifests itself in numerous
ways, in addition to enrolling their sons in Chippewa Area
Catholic Schools. Their ties to the Chippewa Valley educational
system cross over into their careers as well.
Tom and Mary have shared numerous travel experiences
in nearly two decades of marriage - including international
jaunts to Japan and Denmark - but when it comes
to the frequent hunting and fishing excursions, it’s either
Tom going solo, or accompanied by a buddy or a tour
guide.
“We share an interest in travel, including exploring
other cultures,” Mary says. “As for the outdoor experience,
Tom has a level of interest that may be unparalleled, so he
is entirely free to pursue those sporting activities on his
own.”
Whether bow hunting on family land in Chippewa or
Sawyer County, pursuing wild bore at a Texas Game
Reserve or tracking black bear deep in the Canadian backwoods,
Tom has tried just about every variation of hunting
available to the modern outdoorsman. And he has the
mounted trophies in his garage as evidence.
“Everybody needs an outlet,” Mary says. For Tom,
getting into the woods, among the wildlife, is the diversion
that “recharges his batteries,” she notes.
Tom with one of his fine catches.
These days, he has traded in his Adidas high-tops for
a coaches’ whistle. Tom is a volunteer coach for a YMCA
2nd-3rd grade boys’ basketball team. Following back surgery
a few years ago, he officially retired from participating
in recreational hoops, though he insists his jump shot
is still “soft as medicated cotton.”
A surgical procedure notwithstanding, he remains
active with his frequent jaunts through the woods. Amid
the flurry of activity, he’ll no doubt continue to support
the local taxidermist with trophies bagged on future
wildlife expeditions.
For Tom, it’s a way of life.
4 CHIPPEWA AREA CATHOLIC SCHOOLS NEWS
G
Message from
the President
Kenith C. Britt
reetings Friends,
Many blessings to you and
your families during these long
winter months. Whether you are
battling the cold, snowy weather in Wisconsin or are
soaking up the sun in Florida, I hope that all of you
are doing well during this time of the year.
Now is the season where we begin to plan for
the 2009-2010 school year. Catholic education has
been strong in Chippewa Falls since 1881, and it is
important that all of us continue to support this
great gift. Although many have benefited from
Catholic schools, some still ask the question: Why
support Catholic education Since its inception,
Catholic schooling has provided a foundation for
families, parishes, and communities throughout the
United States (and world). In Chippewa Falls,
McDonell has excelled in helping to produce faithfilled
and wonderfully talented young men and
women who benefit their families as husbands and
wives, their parishes through their time, talent, and
treasure, and their communities-many serving in
key leadership positions in business or government.
This cannot be more evident with McDonell being
named as one of the top 50 Catholic high schools in
the United States for a second year in a row.
The more important question to ask is: If we
took an eraser and wiped away the Chippewa Area
Catholic Schools, would Chippewa Falls
(and our communities throughout the
United States with McDonell grads) be
better off or worse off The answer obviously
is Chippewa Falls would be worse
off without our Catholic schools.
In order for us to continue providing this academic
and faith-based education, it is important that
we receive your assistance, especially during these
troubling economic times. With no government
money or vouchers, we rely heavily upon our
parishes, families, and annual contributors to fund
our schools. If you have been unable to financially
support CACS in the past, I ask that you strongly
consider supporting the annual fund drive or our
capital campaign. Our future families, parishes, and
communities depend upon these young men and
young women.
May God continue to bless you and your families
during 2009.
Faithfully Yours in Christ,
Conversation Night
On Monday, March 23 at 6 pm in the McDonell High
School, Mr. Britt is inviting parents, grandparents, alumni and
friends to a conversation night. Conversation will include:
1. The block schedule at the high school. What are the
pros and cons of using this type of schedule
2. Growing our early childhood education. Currently we
have a waiting list because of our limited space at St. Charles
Borromeo Primary. While this is a good problem to have, what
are some of our options to expand this program Please put this
date on your calendar and make plans to get in on the conversation
6 pm, Monday, March 23 at McDonell High School.
Investigating a Crime
would first like to
take this opportunity
to thank all of you
who have so generously
welcomed me in the
CACS community. My
first few months here
have been very
rewarding and very busy. I am blessed to have this
opportunity to serve our children and our schools
in this capacity. Every day I observe the tremendous
generosity of time, talent and treasure of the
families and friends of CACS, which then reminds
me of what a blessing this school system is to our
community. Thank you for all that you do for our
students and our schools.
The Annual Fund Drive, “Partners in Faith:
First You, Then Me” is underway and gaining
momentum. Thank you to all who have contributed
for the 2008 tax year. This annual fund
drive is essential to the success of our schools. This
fund makes up a significant part of our annual
budget, filling in the gaps between tuition and
parish subsidies. If every one of our Alumni donated
just $25 to this fund drive, we would reach our
goal. Please prayerfully consider your ability to
contribute to this fund. Our students are counting
on you.
Online donations are now available through
our website for your convenience. Simply go to
Thank you to the families, alumni and friends
year in a row, we have been named as one of the
Top 50 Catholic High Schools in America by the
Catholic High School Honor Roll. It is a true
honor, and it reflects our commitment to providing
high quality Catholic education to our students.
Your tax deductible contribution to the
Seniors, Katie Stoik and Sarah Peterson AP Biology students
Two of McDonell high school AP Biology students, Katie
Stoik and Sarah Peterson, attended the Forensic Science Day
at Viterbo University in La Crosse on January 6th. Students
from all over the state of Wisconsin participated in this competition
to investigate a fictional crime scene and try to solve
the murder of a man named Randy. To do this they performed
a variety of tests to identify the cause of death and
the murderer. Some of the tests included DNA gel electrophlorysis,
fingerprinting analysis, mineral and soil analysis,
hair and fabric analysis and blood determination. At the
end of the day, the groups made a presentation of the results
they had found and their hypothesis of who killed Randy.
First prize was given to Katie Stoik for coming the closest to
figuring out Randy’s death and was awarded a $500 scholarship
to Viterbo University.
McDonell Foundation receives a one million dollar gift
For the third time in less than a year, Chippewa Area Catholic Schools is benefiting from a substantial
donation. The most recent is a $1 million gift this past fall from the estate of a McDonell Alumni designated
to the McDonell High School Foundation, Inc. This gift marks the largest single donation ever received
by the foundation and will bring the value of the foundation to more than $3 million. “This gift is a testament
to the quality education received through the Catholic schools in Chippewa Falls” said Chuck
Frenette, McDonell High School Foundation President. In the fall of 2007 McDonell and CACS were the
recipients of two gifts totaling $3 million. Mr. Britt, President said: “We continue to receive many blessings
from our Heavenly Father in the CACS Schools. The gifts that we have been given and continue to receive
afford us the opportunity to carry on the rich tradition of providing an excellent Catholic education to students
in Chippewa Falls.”
75 years ago on August 14, 1933 Mr. Hebert’s sister Marie
Ann Hebert passed away while attending the Notre Dame
grade school. This statue of our blessed Mother Mary was
donated to the school in her memory and is today still
guarding and guiding the students from her place of honor
in the Notre Dame Middle School office.

presented “Oliver” on January 23 - 25
This well-loved musical is a favorite with the public. “I’d Do anything”, “Where Is
Love”, and “Consider Yourself”, are a few of the many familiar songs in the show.
Oliver Twist is a young boy who lives in a workhouse with other orphaned boys.
When Oliver disrupts a meal by asking for more, he is sold to a local undertaker and
his family. They treat Oliver horribly and make him sleep under the coffins. Oliver
escapes and runs off to Paddington Green, where he quickly befriends another young
boy, the Artful Dodger. Dodger takes him to his home, an academy for orphans who
learn how to be pick-pockets run by a kind, yet slightly sinister, old gentleman
named Fagin. Oliver is also introduced to Nancy Sikes, a lovable young woman, and
Bet, Nancy’s best friend. When Oliver goes on his first pick-pocketing job, he is
caught by the police. The man that Oliver thieved, Mr. Brownlow, learns of Oliver’s
sad past and brings him into his own home. Meanwhile, Nancy’s husband (the villanious
Bill Sikes) worries that Oliver will tell Mr. Brownlow and the police where the
thieves live. He forces Nancy and Bet to snatch Oliver from Mr. Brownlow’s house
and take him back to Fagin’s. Nancy does everything Bill tells her to, but plans on
secretly taking Oliver back to Mr. Brownlow. Before she can do so, Bill finds out
about Nancy’s plans, and murders her. He then goes after Oliver, but is shot and
killed. Oliver and Mr. Brownlow, who turns out to be Oliver’s grandfather, return
safely home.
McDonell Hosts Junior Rally
By Sarah Kinnick, Junior
If anyone had walked into McDonell Central Catholic High School on November 5 before
the school day began, they would have been aghast to see most of the juniors dressed in jeans
and sweatshirts during the middle of the week-on a Mass day! But these students were not
rebelling against the dress code. Instead, they were waiting for the Mack bus to warm up for
their trip to the Junior Rally.
Each year, a retreat is held for each individual high school grade. During their junior year,
McDonell students attend the Junior Rally with all the other juniors from the seven Catholic
high schools in the diocese. This special retreat includes a speaker, Confession, Adoration,
and Mass with the bishop. The rally’s location rotates, so each school can host it every seven
years. This year it was hosted by McDonell at the Heyde Center for the Arts, with Mass at
Notre Dame Parish and over 400 students attending.
When all the juniors arrived at the Heyde Center, they participated in an “ice-breaker”
game with their speaker, Mr. Chris Stefanick, Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries for
the Archdiocese of Denver. After a short time, Mr. Stefanick began his speech, tackling the
daunting subject of chastity and the many questions raised by the subject. After the morning
session, the juniors split into two groups. While one group ate lunch-pizza from Pizza Hut
and Dominos-in the Notre Dame cafeteria, the others stayed at the Heyde Center for
Confessions and to spend time in Adoration. After lunch, the juniors attended a question and
answer session consisting of their own anonymous questions. Afterwards, the juniors went
over to Notre Dame Parish for Mass with the bishop.
After Mass and the bishop’s encouraging homily to live out their faith without fear or
shame, along with his announcement to the juniors from around the diocese that McDonell
was named to the top 50 Catholic schools for the second year in a row, the juniors headed to
the buses and home. Now McDonell’s juniors can tell the sophomores what to look forward
to at the Junior Rally next year-at Regis! ■
Fall Sports Highlights
SOCCER
Tim Jenneman, coach
The 2008 Soccer season was a great success.
After losing 7 starters from last year's
State appearance, we had confidence and
high hopes. The team challenged themselves
to be better than last year's team.
They did in fact do so. We ended the season
25-2-2. We won the conference championship,
undefeated 10-0, won the sectional
and regional titles, and took runner
up at the Wisconsin State Soccer
Championships. All in all very, very,
COOL, plus we get to put up another banner.
Cory Arneson 1st team, was named
Player of the Year (Mid-Sate
Conference) and State Honorable
Mention. Making 1st team were Will
Schifeling, Chris Eckes and Matt Fialkowski,
2nd team Grant Mickesh and Marc Santolin
and honorable mention was Ryan Kozuch,
James Gunderson and Alex Flunker.
FOOTBALL
Todd Brown, coach
The 2008 Macks football entered a
new conference Marawood. With a new
coaching staff it proved to be a very exciting
and successful season. The season was
highlighted by a come from behind win
against Marathon that put the Macks in the
playoffs. In that game, the Macks scored
two touchdowns in the final four minutes
to secure the win 27-26. The other game
that was a highlight was the regular season
finale against Regis, in which the Macks
won convincingly 34-9.
The Macks qualified for the Division 7
playoffs and ended their season with a
record of 7 wins and 4 losses and a conference
record of 5 wins and 3 losses. Two of
those conference losses came to State
Champion, Stratford and State Runner-Up,
Edgar. Alex Hiess led the Marawood
Conference in rushing and touchdowns,
totaling over 1300 yards rushing and 13
touchdowns. Jarrod Martell led the
Marawood Conference in receptions,
receiving yardage and touchdowns, totaling
over 50 receptions for over 800 yards
and 15 touchdowns.
Alex Hiess, Jarrod Martell and Nate
Dahl were named 1st team All-
Conference, while Landon Bresina and
Ben Rubenzer were 2nd team All-
Conference. Further recognition was
received for Jarrod Martell and Nate Dahl.
Jarrod Martell was also named 1st Team
All Northwest on Offense. Nate Dahl
was recognized as the Lineman of the
Year for the Conference, 1st Team All-
Northwest and 1st Team All-State
Offense. Being named All-State is a
remarkable accomplishment and Nate was
a remarkable player as well as a leader, but
most of all as a person.
A tremendous thank you goes out to
all of the seniors on this year’s Macks team.
They are Nate Dahl, Jarrod Martell,
Heath Krejci, Kyle Nelson, Austin King,
Brigham Gustavson, and Aaron Heimann,
without them none of this would have
been possible. They were leaders on this
year’s team and all of them did so much to
contribute to the success of the season.
The future of the Macks football program
is very bright. Thank you to all that made
this first season such an enjoyable experience.
VOLLEYBALL
Kat Roesler, coach
McDonell Volleyball had a very successful
season. The C team was coached by Mary Czech
and had a great season. They played against
tough competition and improved as the season
progressed. The JV team was coached by
Kristina Bushman from UW-Stout. There had
been dramatic improvements throughout their
great season. The Varsity team was coached by
Kat Roesler and assisted by Steve Roesler. We
ended up in third place in the newly reformed
and highly competitive Western Cloverbelt
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF OUR WINNERS IN 2008,
AND OUR $1000 TOTAL POINTS CHAMPION STACY KATZ!
Conference with a record of 6-2. Overall we
were 27-12, while winning the Debbie Roesler
Memorial Tournament. There was constant
improvement as the year progressed. We learned
as we played and started to peak when tournament
time came around. Our season came to an
end in the regional final with a loss to Clayton.
We played our best match of the season and left
it all at the court. We were down two games
and fought back to force a decisive game five. I
am proud of the way the team fought and came
together. We have many things to be proud of
and grateful for. It truly was a great season. We
had three girls make an all conference team.
Christi Schoch was named first team all conference,
while Mollie Meagher was named to second
team, and Breanna Jenneman was selected
as an honorable mention member. Schoch and
Meagher were also named to the first team
Chippewa County Volleyball Team. The
McDonell volleyball program had a very successful
2008 season. We struggle to say goodbye to
the seniors, while looking forward to success in
the future.
CROSS-COUNTRY
Marty Bushland, coach
The 2008 McDonell Cross Country
Program had another successful season last
fall despite untimely injuries and key losses
to graduation.
Sophomore Amy Bye led the girl’s team
as the top runner in all 10 meets, posted
seven top 10 finishes, and lowered her lifetime
personal best to 16:23.
In the last five meets Megan Pulver ran
as the second runner four times and ran to
All-Conference Honors along with Bye at the
16 Team Conference Meet. Seniors Kelsey
Pruitt and Katie Stoik finished their cross
country careers in fine fashion with Pruitt
being the most improved runner knocking
71 seconds off her lifetime personal
record this season and running in the top
five nine of the 10 meets. Katie Stoik ran
her season best time at the Sectional Meet,
helping the team to a 6th place finish of
the 17 teams competing. Katie ends as a
four-time letter winner, All Conference
Award Winner, State Team Participant
and recipient of the team’s Mackimizer
Award.
The boys were without Tony Bischel
who suffered an injury during the baseball
season that was still on the mend throughout
the fall. Bischel was the top runner in
his class as a frosh that included three of
the four top finishers this year in juniors
Adam Bleskachek, Evin See, and Matt Wenaas.
Adam was our top runner in the first meet,
and ran to All Conference Honors as did
Matt Wenaas who has been one of our most
improved runners over his career and was
our top runner three times this season but
unfortunately ended the season with a
stress fracture. Evin See ran a great race as
our top runner at the Sectional Meet.
Senior and first year runner Grant Mickesh
ran five meets this fall when he wasn’t
playing for the State Runner-Up Soccer
team. Grant lead the team each time he
competed, including a runner-up finish at
the Osseo Invite and fourth place finish at
the 16 Team Conference Meet which
earned him All Conference Honors and
helped the team to a third place finish.
Three juniors, Derek Watton, Ben Ochs, and
Carl Willkom, added great depth and
showed nice improvement as first year
runners. Our most improved runner,
sophomore Alex Broses dropped 3:29 off
his season best earning a spot on Varsity
for the Sectional Meet for the team that
went 83 – 54 for the season. ■
