The first phase of that campaign was to replace the original boiler with a new energy-efficient one – and that was completed in the Fall of 2009. The second phase was to update the lighting in the gymnasium and commons area at McDonell High School. Early in September, the new lights were installed. Our students and athletes are now enjoying the benefits of brighter lights, and our budget is enjoying the energy savings. Your generosity is truly appreciated. The generosity of our supporters continues to bless our schools and our students. Many thanks goes out to Tony Kovach and his company, Access Security, for a generous donation which allowed us to put in a much needed security system and an automated clock-bell-public address system. Another donor gifted us the money to put in more efficient toilets, installed by volunteer John Redinger, in the boys bathroom at McDonell. This summer also saw the installation of a new, convection oven in the kitchen at McDonell, and a new floor in the teacher’s lounge, again all accomplished with the generosity of our donors and volunteers. Technology did not get ignored either this summer. Holy Ghost students are now enjoying a brand new computer lab, including 10 new laptops, bringing the total in their lab to 19. We are now proud to offer the latest and greatest CAD (computer-aided design) program to our students at McDonell. Upgrades were also made to Pete Sedarski, Bob Sworski, Roland Shaurette, Randy Nelson, Erv Rubenzer, Joe See and others! Joe See, class of 1974, lends a hand to B & B Electric. Volunteers worked during the day and at night to make the project move quickly. All lights were installed in time for the first volleyball match of the season vs Regis! 2 ALL - SCHOOL NEWS
I
From the Dean Very Rev. Donald Bauer
t seems incredible that the summer is coming to a
close and that another school year has begun. Perhaps this
swift passing of time has to do with activity in bringing to
the Chippewa Area Catholic Schools a new leader at the
helm, and a new principal for Notre Dame/McDonell. Both
individuals hired during the summer are trying to accomplish
their double booking of meetings. The schools will
seem all too strange to them with students walking through
the doors and an entirely different, but greatly desired and
anticipated, school year beginning. I know that Principal,
Br. Roger Betzold, is someone who thrives on being with the
students. I know Dr Ronnander
loves students also.
I want to re-encourage our
readers of being active in your
parishes, an activity essential for a
vibrant spiritual life centered
around the Blessed Sacrament. I say
this with more concern than ever as
the summer brought to mind news I had known but was set
in a different perspective. While visiting parishioners at the
hospital I had an opportunity to talk to a priest who was the
chaplain at the hospital. He and I are aware of the
decline in Mass attendance, but there was something
else which was very disturbing. People would come
to the hospital in serious conditions, along with their
families, who were alumni from various Catholic
Schools. These individuals, at a time when grace is
most important, were admitting that since they graduated
from their Catholic High School, they basically
dropped out of the practice of their faith. I hope that
before it is too late, that all would live the faith taught them
and witnessed in the Catholic Schools. ■
out of the Goldsmith
Preserve.
Christopher Suilmann, McDonell sophomore,
recently completed his Eagle scout service project as one
of the requirements for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout.
Chris' project was to establish a nature trail in the
Goldsmith Preserve, a neglected piece of city property.
He planned, organized, and lead the work required to
remove trash and garbage, marked and cut down dead
and dying trees, laid out and mowed a trail, and built and
placed benches for the public to enjoy the area.
The Goldsmith Preserve is on the east side of
Duncan Creek directly downhill from old McDonell
Memorial. Chris invites you to stop and spend a few
minutes in this peaceful setting. (Chris is a Life Scout in
BSA Troop 13 in Chippewa Falls.)

4 ALUMNI NEWS
Fall is
absolutely
my favorite
season of the
year. The crispness in the air, seeing
school buses on the road again, football
games, apple pie, the beautiful colors in
the trees, Oktoberfest, etc… what is
there to not like about Fall All of the
seasons are wonderous gifts from God,
but Fall is truly the most spectacular to
me.
With Fall comes our Annual Giving
campaign – “One Day.” In “One Day”, a
child can learn the value of a Christ-centered
life. In “One Day”, a child can be
inspired to rise up to God’s challenge for
him or her to live up to the vision He has
created for them. “One Day” makes a
difference in our community and “One
Day” makes a difference for our students.
This campaign is our most important
fundraiser for the Chippewa Area
Catholic Schools. We use these funds to
supplement our income from tuition and
our parishes to balance our budget.
Everyone is aware of the tough economic
times our country and our community
are facing. We all have decisions to
make regarding where our money is
spent and I can not think of a better
place than Catholic education. “One
Day” may be more than one family can
afford – but more than a child can afford
to miss.
Development & Alumni Relations
Jenny Schafer, Director
I am asking for your support of our
Annual giving campaign to help support
our students and families in need of
assistance. The Chippewa Area Catholic
Schools have not been immune to the
economic crisis in our country as more
and more of our families are requesting
student tuition assistance than ever
before. Twenty percent of our students
received reduced tuition during the
2008/09 school year, and the numbers
that have requested assistance for this
upcoming year is closer to 25%.
It only takes $25 per school day to
provide a high quality Catholic education
to our students. Please prayerfully
consider giving a gift of “One Day”, or
perhaps even one week of Catholic education
to a young person so that they can
come to know Christ more fully in their
lives. The dividends that our students
receive from their Christ based education
last a lifetime.
God Bless you and your families this
Fall. Enjoy the beautiful weather and I
look forward to seeing you at the
September 25th and then again on
Saturday night, the 26th, at the “Spirit of
P
raised be Jesus
Christ! (Your response:
“Now and Forever!”) I
am so happy to be a part
of the Chippewa community.
Everyone has been
so kind – and patient. I
have settled in almost
completely. The mess that now sits atop my
desk has nothing to do with the fact that I
just moved here a little over a month ago
from Rome.
As I have just completed my first year as
a priest, and as my second year has begun in
the “Year of the Priest”, I thought that I would
tell you about my year, this great vocation,
and how good God is.
People often ask me, “So when did you
know that you would become a priest” To
this question, I have two answers, and I toggle
between the two of them depending on
whether or not I think the one will scandalize
the inquirer. The slightly more shocking
answer is, “On my ordination day.” The mis-
McDonell/Notre Dame Chaplain - Fr. Justin Kizewski
guided search for mathematical
certainty does not work in relationships,
whether between two
human persons or between God
and man. It was faith (the substance
of which is of a much
greater certainty), guided and confirmed
by the many human capacities
of more people than just myself, that led
me to ordination. Since my ordination day, I
have witnessed the victory of the Holy Spirit
in the lives of people in the confessional, I
have fed with the Body and Blood of Christ
the People of God, and I have spent the year
thinking about what it means to say that God
is three and one (in finishing my degree in
Rome) – the whole while watching myself
grow into a vocation and being reminded
that this is who God has meant me to be from
all eternity. Not a bad first year!
The other answer that I give is, “in high
school”. It was in high school that I realized,
with the help of teachers, that this Catholic
faith is true. In addition, I saw a priest who
was happy in what he was doing and who
carried with him the tangible quality of being
in love with Christ, and it was contagious.
I look forward to teaching in the high
school, in part, because it was in high school
that I discovered the face of Jesus. It is my
prayer that I will be able to hand on what I
have received so far, please pray for me.
Football Mania Ticket winners
McDonell Athletic Boosters started a new fundraiser last year to help raise the
$65,000 funds needed annually to support the high school athletic program.
Tickets sold has winners for all 17 weeks of the football season.
All sold tickets have been activated, and those who purchased tickets can
track their results at www.charitymania.com by inserting their ticket number on
the website home page. Since the athletic boosters do not possess all 4960 tickets
in their “deck”, please remember that the six weekly winners won’t all come
from our local sales. However, this year the Booster Club will guarantee at least
four weekly winners generated from our ticket sales by supplementing the “winners”
list with random drawings of $25 each for any particular week where we
have less than 4 winners from our ticket sales. Odds of winning remain at 1 in
48. Weekly winners will be posted on our website at
www.cacs.k12.wi.us/athboost.html each Tuesday, and a check/letter will be
sent out to the winners that same week.

6 CHIPPEWA AREA CATHOLIC SCHOOLS NEWS
Message from
the President
Dr. Chad Ronnander
y first summer as the
Chippewa Area Catholic Schools
president was a beautiful experience.
It has been an honor for me
and my family to join a school system
blessed with such an abundance of Christian community
spirit and hard-working, talented people – faculty,
staff, parents, parishioners, and pastors – who care
passionately about Catholic education and our schools.
We have accomplished a lot together this summer,
and as I write (on August 21), we are preparing for the
arrival of our students on September 1. We look forward
to that. Their academic and spiritual growth is
the truest measure of our efforts.
The list of this past summer’s highlights is a long
one. We began by hiring Brother Roger Betzold as high
school/middle school principal, a Christian Brother
whose great experience, faith, and work ethic is already
making a positive impact. Four strong teachers have
joined our faculty and we also have a smart new middle
school secretary.
We also have a fine new chaplain, Father Justin
Kizewski. We have installed a new academic counseling
program for grades 7-12, along with thorough marketing
and recruitment programs that will increase enrollment.
We have also introduced useful new technologies:
a state-of-the-art CAD (computer-aided design)
program that will serve 50 students this year, a new
computer laboratory at Holy Ghost, a modern electron-
ic security system at McDonell/Notre Dame,
and an automated clock-bell-public address
system, which our secretaries sure were happy
to see. The parking lot lines are freshly
repainted. By the end of September, there will
be new lights in the McDonell/Notre Dame gymnasium
and commons, which will make our school both
brighter and more energy efficient, saving us thousands
of dollars a year.
None of these things would have been possible
without the support of alumni, parents, and others who
have given generously of their time, talent, and treasure.
You all have our deepest and most prayerful
thanks, and you know that the students will also appreciate
these gifts. If space allowed, I would thank you all
individually.
The Lord’s work is never done, and neither is ours.
I hope to serve the Chippewa Area Catholic Schools for
many years to come. As our attention turns toward the
real work of the schools – teaching, learning, praying,
and playing together – we will also be planning for next
summer. One improvement on our wish list is to provide
handicapped & short-term parking at the main
McDonell/Notre Dame entrance, and to beautify the
entrance. Go Macks!
Wish List
SEW AND SOW
A new club forming at McDonell this year is Sew and Sow.
Madame Carlson, our French teacher, started this club with
the goal of students using their talents of sewing to help those
in the community who could benefit from receiving a blanket
or quilt. The group, because they are new, are looking for good
quality sewing machines, notions and fabric. Tools for cutting
the fabric such as rotary cutters, $20 and cutting mats,
$25 would also be helpful.
TURTLE KIDDY BUS
Our childcare center expanded to accept two-year-old children
last year. As a result we need suitable equipment to transport
several of them on different outings that is safe, secure
and easier for people to handle. Turtle Kiddy Bus seats 6 and
can run close to $2500 each. A four-person multi-child
stroller is $600 each and would be helpful to have two.
ONE TON 10 PASSENGER VAN
To use for transporting students for service projects and sporting
events.
FLAT SCREEN MONITORS
Energy efficient flat screen monitors will replace the 40 monitors
currently in the McDonell/Notre Dame library. Cost is
approximately $100 each.
Thank you for your consideration. Every gift counts! If you
have any questions or would like to offer additional
assistance, please contact Jenny Schafer in the Development
