Vistas 4th edition - Author: Blanco - ISBN: 978-1-61767-499-0
Custom Student Edition (Loose-Leaf) (1-18) + Supersite Plus
You may purchase from the GPC bookstore or direct from the publisher. The correct package does not exist
in used form or from other venders. There is NO refund from our bookstores once the shrink-wrap material is
opened. Whenever purchasing any materials for your classes, whether online or in the bookstore, always be aware of
the return policies. If you wish to purchase from the publisher directly, visit www.vhldirect.com/store/gpc
Finally, you will need access to a computer with internet access (hi-speed) to access iCollege and the Supersite (where you
will do your assignments and quizzes) with speakers or headphones for this course. You will also need an inexpensive
computer mic. Some computers have built-in mics. You may obtain an inexpensive computer mic for about $ 12 from
Walmart or Target.
All Spanish classes (face-to-face, online and hybrid, 1001 through 2002) use the same materials.
We use the Vistas 4 th edition looseleaf text with access to the Supersite (the portal for the ebook, online activities and online
assessments). Note that this is NOT the same as EN LINEA (used until summer of 2011). If you used Vistas 4 th edition with
access to the Supersite in the fall and you purchased the complete text (Lessons 1-18) with 36 months of Supersite access,
you do not need to purchase anything for this course. You may simply log in at www.vhlcentral.com with your existing
username and password. You will then enroll in my 1002 course within the Supersite.
If you purchased Volume 2 already (with 6 months access), but dropped your previous 1002 course, please contact me ASAP so
I can advise you on what to do.
If you do not have the new Vistas 4 th edition with Supersite access OR if you purchased only Volume 1 (Lec. 5-10) with the 6
months of access to the Supersite (that you used for SPAN 1001), you will need to purchase materials for this course. You have
two options. You may purchase the volume that contains only the chapters that you need for 1002 (Lec. 5-10) and a code for six
months of Supersite access OR you may purchase the complete package that provides all 18 chapters for 1001 through 2002
including the online access to the Supersite (ebook) for those courses. Whichever package you select comes with the physical
and electronic resources that you will need. No additional materials are required. Note that if you purchase just the volume
for your course, you will only have 6 months of access to the Supersite. If you take the next level in sequence, you will
need to make another purchase for the next semester. Should you drop this course, you will be given a one-time code
extension. This must be requested by and verified by your instructor. You will see all of the chapters in the Supersite, but
you will only have 6-months access to it with the purchase of the volume for your course. Looseleaf materials may not be
resold used (by law) and codes may not be shared or sold to others by their owners (by law).

If you don’t have high-speed internet access at home, use the GPC open computer labs (or another computer with high-speed access) to
save LOTS of time.
ARE YOU IN THE CORRECT LEVEL OF SPANISH FIND OUT NOW !
You are in the correct level if you have taken Spanish 1001. If you have taken more than one Spanish class in high school or if
you have used the language in travel, work or at home, you may wish to see if you can place at a higher level. You can access a
FREE ONLINE Spanish placement exam (from any computer with internet access) by going to
http://webcape.byuhtrsc.org/acct=gpc. The password is "gpc". The exam takes from 5 to 20 minutes depending on your
knowledge of the Spanish language. When you finish the exam your results will be displayed for you along with a suggestion of
which level of Spanish would best suit you. Ultimately, the choice is up to you. However, you will need to do this within the
first couple of days of classes if you wish to change classes and you may need faculty to override you into a different class.
Students are not permitted to take two levels of a foreign language simultaneously. If you are currently enrolled in more
than one level, notify your instructor(s) at once.
iCollege:
We will be using iCollege for this course. All important course information will be posted to this course’s iCollege page,
including grades, some quizzes, review sheets, etc. It is imperative that you obtain a GPC iCollege username/password if you
do not already have one. To find out your username/password combo, go to http://www.gpc.edu/getmylogin .
WITHDRAWAL POLICY:
If you wish to withdraw yourself (if you are not making satisfactory progress in the course), you must do so by Wed. Feb.
29 th , the midpoint, to avoid receiving an F or a WF later. You are responsible for withdrawing yourself (in person at the
Enrollment and Registration Services) and must take care of the appropriate paperwork to initiate that withdrawal.
EXTRA CREDIT:
Many opportunities will be given throughout the semester. They will count as points towards your total average. You
may earn up to 30 points (on the 1000 scale) of extra credit.

FREE TUTORING:
The ISS (Instructional Support Services)/ LTC (Learning and Tutoring Center) offers free tutoring. Most campuses,
including the Newton campus, have Spanish tutoring for free. Also, you may use the following online Spanish tutorial
(1001-level) for free: http://www.handsonspanish.com and log-in with username: gpc2009 password: spanish
GRADING GUIDELINES: Students will be graded on a point system based on 1,000 points:
TOTAL POINTS…...…………………………………………………………………............1,000
GRADING SCALE 900 - 1,000 = A 800 – 899 = B
700 – 799 = C 600 – 699 = D 599 or less = F
Students are responsible for keeping up with their grades. You will see ALL your grades through iCollege (“my grades”
icon). Keep record of how many points you earned for each assignment and of how many total points possible there were per
assignment. You can then keep a running tally of your points earned. To determine your average at any time, simply divide
your point tally by the total possible points at that time to see your grade as a percentage by moving the decimal two
places to the right. For example, if I had 440 points out of 500 available, my score would be 440 ÷ 500 = 0.88, which would be
88 on a scale of 100.
ATTENDANCE POLICY PREAMBLE
Students’ academic success is the major priority of Georgia Perimeter College. Because regular participation enhances the learning
process, students are expected to adhere to the attendance policy set forth by the College and individual faculty members.
Differences in content and teaching styles exist among courses, which can impact students’ learning. Therefore, students are strongly
encouraged to attend all classes and prepare themselves thoroughly in advance for assignments, tests, and other course-related
activities. Students are accountable for material covered during any absence.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
It is recommended that you miss no more than three classes. Your oral participation grade will be negatively affected by too many
absences. For each unexcused absence over three you will loose two points of your oral participation grade. Leaving early or
arriving late will count as a half of an absence. Two of these equal one absence. Excuses must be DOCUMENTED (medical, court,
school or funeral-related). Oral practice is crucial to foreign language learning. No make-up quizzes, exams or projects are permitted
in this course as your lowest grade is dropped for each category. You may miss one grade (and only one) from each category
without it affecting your grade. If you take all of them, your lowest one will be dropped.
SYLLABUS QUIZ – This quiz is mandatory for all. The syllabus quiz is on the iCollege home page for this course. You
may take it from any computer and you may retake it until 11:59pm of the due date (see bottom of syllabus for due dates).
SUPERSITE USAGE QUIZ – This quiz is mandatory for all. The Supersite usage quiz is on the iCollege home page for this
course. You may take it from any computer and you may retake it until 11:59pm of the due date.

Oral Class Participation:
This grade consists of your ability to respond in Spanish to questions posed to you in Spanish by the Instructor and by other
students (in group work). A student must participate in the class activities, be attentive and responsive in class, and come to
class prepared (by reading over the content for that day’s class in advance and doing the assigned activities) in order to be ready
for these questions the following class day. They will only cover information already presented. Students are not graded on the
accuracy of their responses in class per se, but rather on their ability to construct comprehensible Spanish sentences and their
willingness to incorporate Instructor feedback.
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS:
A student must complete online assignments by the deadlines. All of these assignments are to be done online at
www.vhlcentral.com through the Practice and WebSAM tabs. Be sure to watch the Tutorials BEFORE doing the
activities. This website requires certain computer settings, browser settings/versions, etc. See the end of the syllabus
for details. I will be dropping your lowest chapter of homework. NO LATE WORK will be allowed and there
are NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule as you may drop your lowest chapter of homework.
You will be allowed four attempts to complete each homework assignment (except for true/false and openended
activities). The PRACTICE activities are for completion credit and will not be graded for accuracy, although
the system will show you your score for each so that you can track your progress. The WEBSAM assignments that
are graded for accuracy (except for true/false and open-ended activities that only allow one attempt). You will
also have four attempts at the WEBSAM activities. The system will give you guided feedback. It will show you
which portions of your answer are incorrect in order to help you improve your score at each attempt. It is important
that you not fall behind. Assignments are automatically given a time stamp online and the time you complete the
assignments will show on my screen. Assignments are due by 11:59pm on their due date. If your own computer is
not functioning, you may use an open computer lab for free at any GPC campus. Personal computer
failure/internet trouble is not considered a valid excuse for not having the assignments completed on time; DO
NOT WAIT UNTIL THE EVENING THEY ARE DUE. Remember that high-speed access is suggested for the
websites we use.
After you have created an account you will log-in at www.vhlcentral.com with your username and password
You will see each chapter/lección listed at the left. When you click each lección/chapter, you will see the various
sections (like “contextos”, “estructura,” etc.) For each lección/ chapter you will have a variety of exercise types that
can be accessed through the tabs in the top center (Tutorials, Practice, WebSAM, Assessments). You’ll have
tutorials that teach you the content. While you will not submit answers for tutorials, you should go through of the
tutorials for the sections where they are provided before doing your assignments. While you will not submit
answers for tutorials, you should go through of the tutorials for the sections where they are provided before
doing your assignments. After viewing the tutorials, do Practice assignments BEFORE Websam
assignments. When doing your assignments, you must click submit for each exercise that requires input in
order for your work to be recorded. Also, you should do activities in sequence and not skip around.
Which assignments should I do To see what assignments are due in each chapter, click the “Practice” and the
“WebSAM” tabs in the top center of the screen and then to click on the appropriate lesson (at left). You will see due
dates next to any assignments due. You will see a section at the top right (under Student Tools) that says “upcoming
assignments” or “next 10 assignments due.” Note that only 10 assignments can fit in this window and that you may
have more than that assigned. Always view the tabs to find out what is due when. Finally, as you are working in
the vText, you will notice which activities have been assigned, but these are only SOME of the PRACTICE activities,
not all for them. Also, the vText does NOT link to any WebSAM activities or assessments. Most importantly, before
linking to and completing any assignments, WATCH THE TUTORIALS (tutorials tab) for each section in which
work is assigned and READ THE CONTENT in the Vistas text or in the vText for each section in which work is
assigned.
CHAPTER QUIZZES -- There will be quizzes for each chapter/lección. Each chapter has a brief “contextos
quiz/miniprueba” (an objective quiz over vocabulary), an end-of-lesson quiz, “Prueba” (an objective quiz over
grammar and vocabulary) and an “escuchar/escritura quiz” (a brief subjective quiz in which you write answers to
questions you hear and write a composition of a paragraph in length or a dialogue/conversation). Quizzes are graded

for accuracy (grammatical, spelling, accents, etc.) Each student may drop his or her lowest score on each type
of quiz (lowest contextos, lesson quiz and escritura as they may be from different chapters). A student may drop
his/her lowest quiz score only if he/she has taken all five of that type of quiz. If a quiz is missed, it will automatically
be dropped. This means a student can miss one (of each type of) quiz (one contextos, one lesson quiz, one escritura);
however, the student will not be able to drop another. Also, because one missed quiz is allowed, there are no makeup
quizzes. Any quiz missed over one results in a zero that remains in the average. You must take them by the
deadline given or your results will not be submitted to me for grading. You will have a wide window of time to take
the chapter quizzes and you may take them at any time (day or night/weekday or weekend) during that period.
Preparation notes: I’ll post review notes on the homepage of iCollege for each chapter’s quizzes. There are also audio review
files (most in mp3 format which can be played on iCollege, downloaded to your computer and/or to your ipod). It is imperative
that you review these before taking any of the quizzes for a chapter in order to best understand concepts.
The contextos miniprueba and the Prueba (lesson quiz) are online at the Supersite and are open book/open notes, but are
timed and graded for accuracy. The Supersite does not have a running time. You must keep up with your own time
when taking these. This means that you have the resources at your disposal to help you, but due to time constraints, if
you do not study in advance, you will not be able to submit the quizzes in time if you have to look up all of the answers.
If the quizzes/graded activities are not submitted within the time allowed, they will be assigned a zero. This will ensure
that you study the material. Your success in using a foreign language depends upon your committing to memory
vocabulary words and grammar structures. Also you are only allowed ONE ATTEMPT at any quiz. If you
experience technical difficulties while taking a quiz, email me and contact tech support at 1-800-248-2813.
Each chapter allows 80 points for quizzes (10 pts for contextos miniprueba quiz, 50 pts for the Lesson Quiz/Prueba and
20 pts for escuchar/escritura quiz). Each part is timed and graded separately. You may take the Supersite quizzes
(contextos and Lesson Quiz/Prueba) on different days as you complete and study various sections of each
chapter/lección. They must all be completed by the deadline on the calendar, though. The dates for the in-class
escuchar/escritura quizzes are also on the calendar.
PART I: THE CONTEXTOS QUIZ (the vocab. quiz online through the Supersite (at www.vhlcentral.com) for each chapter)
You’ll see this quiz or “Contextos Miniprueba” in the Assessments tab of the Supersite. Complete the tutorials and
contextos assignments and study the vocabulary before taking the contextos quiz. You will be allowed 20
minutes for the Contextos Quiz. If you submit your answers past that time limit, they will not
be graded by your instructor. Use the floating accent toolbar for fill-‐in-‐the-‐blank sections when necessary. This
portion of the quiz is graded by the computer. This means that you must enter the answers 100%
accurately. If you are unsure of spelling or accent marks, look them up before submitting. Be sure to read the
instructions carefully for each section of the quiz. You only have one attempt for this quiz.
Remember to keep track of your time on this quiz. The Supersite does not have a running clock.
PART II: THE LESSON QUIZ / PRUEBA (chapter quiz online through the Supersite (at www.vhlcentral.com) for each chapter)
You’ll see this quiz or “PRUEBA” in the Assessments tab of the Supersite.
You should complete ALL contextos and estructura sections (tutorials and assignments)
and study the content before taking the lesson quiz/Prueba.
You will be allowed 45 minutes for the Lesson Quiz.
If you submit your answers past that time limit, they will not be graded.
Use the floating accent toolbar for fill-‐in-‐the-‐blank sections when necessary. An answer
will not be considered “correct” by the computer unless it is correctly entered (correctly spelled
w/ any accent marks). Review your answers carefully before submitting them.
This quiz is graded by the computer. This means that you must enter the
answers 100% accurately. If you are unsure of spelling or accent marks, look them up before submitting. Be
sure to study the grammar review notes for each lesson in the iCollege module(s). Be sure to read the
instructions carefully for each section of the quiz. You only have one attempt for this quiz.
Remember to keep track of your time on this quiz. The Supersite does not have a running clock.
PART III: THE ESCUCHAR & ESCRITURA (LISTENING & WRITING) QUIZ (IN CLASS):
This quiz will be given for each chapter in class on the dates listed on the calendar. You will need a piece of
paper and a pen/pencil. It will be closed-book, closed notes. There will be two sections consisting of a short composition
(usually a paragraph or brief dialogue) and oral questions that you will answer in writing. This portion of the quiz is graded

y me. A careful review of feedback will go a long way to helping you improve your writing and communication skills.
Oral Presentation:
Each student will do an oral presentation. More information about this will be given at a later date.
Midterm Exam:
The midterm exam is over chapters 6 and 7. Your full participation and assignment completion will prepare you for it. We
will thoroughly review for the midterm exam. The midterm exam is mandatory and you must be present for it. The exam will
be closed-book, closed-notes and will be a paper and pen exam administered during a regular class time as posted on the
schedule at the end of the syllabus.
Final Exam:
The final exam is comprehensive (chapters 6-10). Your full participation and assignment completion will prepare you for it.
We will thoroughly review for the final exam. The final exam is mandatory and you must be present for it. The exam will be
closed-book, closed-notes and will be a paper and pen exam administered during the exam time at the end of the schedule on this
syllabus.
AVAILABIITY OF COURSES IN THE SEQUENCE: Unlike major universities, Georgia Perimeter College only offers a
few courses in the sequence of a given language on a particular campus during the academic year. It is advised that once you
begin the sequence, you stay in it until you have finished it. Dropping out along the way could mean a lengthy delay before you
can continue your language study.
COLLEGE POLICIES:
ATTENDANCE during No-show period: A student must attend class within the No Show Attendance period (check schedule
at www.gpc.edu for exact dates). If you do not attend at all during this period, you will be dropped from class as a “No Show.”
DISRUPTIVE STUDENT POLICY:
Behavior that is disruptive or that interferes with the campus learning process in the classroom or on campus is not permitted.
(see Student Handbook p. 52) Disruptive behavior in the classroom will negatively affect the student’s participation grade. If
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS, TECH SUPPORT AND COMPUTER EXPERIENCE:
For this class you will need to have the following computer experience: using a word processing program, navigating web browsers and
websites, using iCollege (at http://icollege.gpc.edu ) and using SUPERSITE (at www.vhlcentral.com ).
You will find the online orientation to iCollege at the link below. It is vital that you do this orientation if this is your first time using
iCollege.
http://www.gpc.edu/icollege/orientation/
Also, you should check your browser at:
http://www.usg.edu/usgweb/browserchecker/
Should you have technical difficulties with iCollege during this course, please visit:
http://www.gpc.edu/online/techpack/techpack.htm
You will also need to become familiar with using Supersite (our online book and resources for this course). The Supersite contains
demos under “Help/Resources” in the right-‐hand column under “Student Tools.”
If you have technical difficulties with the Supersite during this course, please visit:
www.support.vhlcentral.com or call 1-800-248-2813
manufacturer (such as HP or Dell).
You will need frequent access to the internet as ALL of the coursework is done online. You will have a physical companion for offline
study, but all else is done while connected to the internet. While online, you will need to allow pop-‐ups from the two sites we use for
the course (at http://icollege.gpc.edu and www.vhlcentral.com). You may use the GPC open computer labs. Keep in mind that you
will need to bring a headset for listening activities so as not to disturb others in the lab (the same is recommended for
library/learning resource computers). For the recording activities, you must be in a place where you can speak out loud into your
microphone.
Your computer will need internet access (high-‐speed HIGHLY recommended), a sound card, either speakers or a headset for listening
activities, an inexpensive computer microphone (either built-‐in or purchased separately for around $ 10). You will NOT need a
special Spanish keyboard or a Spanish language bar plug-‐in. If you need special accented characters, they will be provided to you in
such a way that you can insert them or copy and paste them.
To use the Supersite to its best advantage, you must have the appropriate software, plug-‐ins, and network connection. Please take the
time to read through the following and to download the following software, if you do not have it installed already.
