• The Knights are looking to regroup after the loss of Coach Steve Trimble this summer. They
face an always competitive WCAC schedule with tough non-league opponents in Ireton, St. Albans
and a vastly improving St. Mary’s Ryken team. There will be several new faces in key positions both
on the field and within the coaching staff. The Knights will definitely be bolstered by the groundswell
from students, faculty and staff, all of whom will be supporting the team as they strive to do their best.

• Under Coach Alberto Starace’s leadership, Bishop O’Connell High School has won 10
Catholic League championships: four Catholic Girls Athletic Association (CGAA) banners and
six Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) championships.
• This year, with the help of five freshmen and the strong play of Morgan Reuther, Cara

Ranked Virginia Private School.
• This impressive group of girls are competing for a 5th straight WCAC and VAISS Championship
as well as a 6th straight Arlington County Championship. Led by Emily Blagg, Devin
Hill, Nicole Carty, and Taylor Chamness, the team looks to defend their title as Southeast Region
Champion at the Wendy’s Invitational Meet in Charlotte, NC.

• The players and coaches of the Bishop O’Connell Lady Knights varsity tennis team have
set their collective sights on a WCAC championship season and more. The team returns ten
members from last season’s highly successful 11-4 campaign. They are led by seniors Rebecca

• After advancing to the conference finals a year ago and posting an impressive 25-4
record, the Lady Knights, along with their head coach, Mike Barnett have high expectations for
this season. Claire Crutchfield, a two-time WCAC first team selection, leads a young and hardworking
core of girls toward a hopeful WCAC Championship.
• Since 2001, when Coach Barnett inherited the program, Knights Volleyball has received
numerous accolades with one Washington Post All-Met, one WCAC Player of the Year,
and several WCAC 1st Team and WCAC 2nd Team selections.

• The 2011 season marks the return of field hockey to Bishop O'Connell High School
after a 30 year hiatus. Approximately 60 girls tried out for the varsity and JV teams providing
a strong pool of athletes to choose from. Coach Mary Quinn started the field hockey program
at Good Counsel High School and was instrumental in getting the sport recognized as a WCAC
sport after 12 years.
• The biggest challenge for the Knights this season will be competing against more
experienced field hockey teams in the WCAC, but the game sense, speed, and competitiveness
developed in other DJO sports will bring the team along quickly.
• Leadership from a core group of seniors will be crucial to setting the Knights field
hockey program on the road to success.

• The Royalettes completed another successful year at summer camp, where the girls
placed third for their home routine with a blue ribbon evaluation – and, in doing so, qualified
for the National Dance Team Championships in Orlando, Fla. The Royalettes also recieved a
Superior trophy, which was awarded to teams with the highest averages based on individual
routine evaluation. This also qualified the Royalettes for Nationals.
• Chelsea Dade, Shanna Bishop and Emily Fulbrook were named All-Americans, which
qualified each of them to perform at the New Year’s Day Parade in London, England. That
trio also qualified for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in New York, along with teammates
Olivia Timms, Carrie Stevens, Pauline Cusmano and Niki Lindstrom.
• The Royalettes Dance Team was established in 1981 by Kay Ahlstrom, who retired in
1999 and currently resides in South Carolina. Over the years, there have been over 300 girls
who have been a part of this great tradition. This year marks the 30th anniversary for the Royalettes.

• The varsity cheerleading team cheers at all varsity football games, and home varsity boys
and girls basketball games, as well as pep rallies, community events, and other school activities.
• Multiple members of the team earned NCA All American nominations earning them the
opportunity to perform at national events like the Macy's Day Parade and the NFL Pro Bowl.
