CREATIVE ARTS<br />

Painting<br />

8 Sessions<br />

Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM<br />

Day: Wednesdays, beginning October 5<br />

Instructor: Kyle Blumenthal, Award-Winning Artist<br />

Cost: $45 <strong>Glen</strong> <strong>Cove</strong> Residents, $20 Senior Citizens, $55 Non-residents<br />

(students will be expected to purchase their own supplies)<br />

Location: <strong>Glen</strong> <strong>Cove</strong> High School, Room 132<br />

Description: Develop greater freedom, openness and expressiveness in oil or acrylic paints. Learn painting skills and<br />

techniques for value transitions and contrasts, color harmony, brush handling and composition. Emphasis will be on individual<br />

development and the perception and translation of form and color. Priority will be given to working from direct observation<br />

and problem-solving. Individualized and group instruction. All levels welcome. Bring a sketch book and drawing pencils to the<br />

first class. You may also bring painting supplies and a still life to work from. Painting supplies will be discussed at the first class.<br />

Book Discussion: Literature of Long Island<br />

Time: 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM<br />

Day: Tuesdays, beginning September 27<br />

Instructor: Judith Lipton, M.A., English Literature<br />

Description: Bring your ideas and your voice to this informal open-ended course. F. Scott Fitzgerald, Walt Whitman,<br />

William Gaddis, Emma Lazarus and others have all written masterpieces about the North Shore of Long Island. This class<br />

will read, discuss (and perform) the literature – stories, poems and a possible novel – and the writers’ use of Long Island as<br />

metaphor. We may even have time to write our own odes to Long Island! Limited to 20 students.<br />

Description: This course will explain elements that defined the classic Hollywood era of the 1920s-1960s. It will also<br />

creatively demonstrate how its stars and studios thrived, or struggled, within the industry. Class will be encouraged to share<br />

their movie memories; special clips will add to the discussion.<br />
