Editorial Viewpoint for 2006
The Free American remains committed to
bringing the truth to the American people. We believe
that in a free society, it is the job of the press to be
the watchman of the government. It then falls upon
the people, being fully informed, to decide what
actions they must take to preserve and defend their
liberty.
The Free American is unabashedly, pro-
American. Too many of our ancestors fought and
died to protect our Constitution, the oldest in the
world, to insure that we would retain those liberties
spelled out in our Bill of Rights.
Based on the knowledge we have compiled over
the last nine years of publication, we believe there
is a verifiable, well documented plan to force
Americans into a Global Government, complete with
one world banking, a global ID system, an
international police force, and a disarmed populous.
This is unacceptable to us personally and
incompatible with our Constitution and Bill of
Rights.
Those who advocate such a global system and
the dismantling of our Bill of Rights, are either
misguided, uninformed or, if totally knowledgable,
traitors to this country. We will expose them.
The Free American is not affiliated with any
political party, religious sect, secret society, cult,
club or movement.
We do not advocate violence but we stress the

There comes a time in our lives when things just do not work
and we have to make changes. This is one of those times in my
life and I am reaching out to you to help me determine what changes
to make and how to do that. I would like to put you to work using
the tools I have crafted. This magazine.
My ex-wife, who I once loved with all my heart, criticizes me
for putting my personal life in here and on my website, but she
also finds fault when I talk about Jews in power behind the scenes.
"You know you would be so much better off if you stopped talking
about the Jews!"
"Sure. I will do that if you can get the Jews to stop talking
about the Arabs!" This statement is flippant but if the main stream
targets White Supremacists and militant Muslims, and adherents
to Christian Identity, why should Jewish Zionists Goals for world
domination not be discussed
If you agree with her and don't want to hear the truth, leave
now and join her in the safety of your illusions. And it is those
illusions that I intend to address in this issue. The cover provides
the theme, Scammers.
Most of you have been with me for years. You have read my
columns, listened to my broadcasts and watched my films. You
bikers out there have looked at my photos of beautiful women,
gorgeous motorcycles and shared my stories of my encounters
with famous bikers in Thunder Riders. You know who I am and
what I think, but trying to put together a coherent and viable organization
in opposition to the status quo is a little more difficult
now than it has ever been. I may not be able to do it from Bingham
like I once did, so Bingham might be up for sale and I will be
considering relocating to another city or state where I can find the
help I need to do all of the things that need to be done.
Thunder Riders was a fun magazine to do and totally nonpolitical.
I used it to get funds to run the Free American because
the Free American goes in directions that are impossible for most
mind-controlled Americans to fathom. That worked until the "accident"
took away the Free American magazine, my radio show
and the support of my family. My sons kept Thunder Riders going
while I was kept unconscious but a year after they left (Or I ran
them off, depending on your point of view.).
I made a deal and sold Thunder Riders to get the money to
republish the Free American but I was unintentionally outted after
the publicly traded company in the motorcycle industry announced
their purchase of Thunder Riders and related items in a
press release on Wall Street, stating that Clay Douglas would remain
on as publisher.
Obviously this announcement sent up a red flag on the ADL
desk and every stockholder in that company was contacted and
told what a right wing, radical, racist, Anti-Semite Clay Douglas
was. The CEO of that company backed out because of the pressure
from his stockholders. I let him because I did not want to be
in business with or beholden to a spineless jackal.
The people who buy the Free American and listen to my broadcasts
are special people and well educated by means other than
the television. The advertisers in Thunder Riders are not that knowledgeable
or worldly. The advertisers who had reaped the benefits
of my writing and pictures in Thunder Riders were contacted and
threatened with the loss of their Jewish clientele for supporting a
right wing, racist, Anti-Semite like Clay Douglas. After that, my
attempts to sell advertising fell flat there.
I have a new name for the people behind this kind of action.
Scammers. Name calling and demonization has always been the
tool of tyrants and Zionists. Kind of like the situation this week in
the Seattle airport where travelers were stripped of their enjoyment
of Christmas by a Rabbi who threatened to sue the airport if
it did not display the Menorah also. The airport took down all of
the Christmas trees this year.
You have tried to help when John Trochmann and I and others
formed the Militias after Waco. Until the OKC blast and Timothy
McVeigh, an employee of the US Army, was used to tarnish the
Militia Movement. More Scammers.
Then 9-11 happened and our stable world began to crumble.
Well, at least mine did.
Up to this point in time, the only Terrorists I could see were
working for our government, like the BATF with back up from
the FBI, as demonstrated by the actions against the Branch
Davidians in Waco. Suddenly the Muslims were the new enemy
overshadowing the evil Constitutionalists and their Militias.
My perceptions, after 9-11, was that this was an engineered
event not done by Arabs in a cave in Afghanistan anymore than
OKC had been done by the Militias. I saw Osama Bin Laden in
the same light of Tim McVeigh and Lee Harvey Oswald. More
Scammers. Include Jewish mobster Jack Ruby in that list
I referred to the trade towers as an exaggerated case of "Jewish
Lightning" (Larry Silverstein bought the towers for $500 million,
insured the complex for 700 billion and collected a few short
months later. I featured a picture of Building Number 7 on the
cover of the last Free American in 2004 along with Silverstein's
statement that he had "pulled" #7. That and my film, "The True
Face of FEMA, which exposed the Zionist created "Homeland
Security" agenda against Americans, is what, I believe led to my
"accident" and three hospitals keeping me unconscious unnecessarily
for three months, so my cracked ribs and collarbone could
heal!
Finally, my wife of 24 years, Janet, decided she didn't want to

deal with a badly injured, irritated, angry
husband once he was out of the hospital
and wanted to work again. Alone for the
first time in 24 years and out of the dating
scene, I got on something called Yahoo
Personals in an attempt to meet someone
to fill the void in my life. I started out talking
to women in Phoenix without a lot of
success. The few that I found attractive
never wrote back and fewer still had the
interest or the courage to even pick up a
phone and call me after seeing my website.
A few months back, I moved back to
New Mexico to clean up my property and
attempted to borrow money on the equity I
had built up over the last ten years. But every
company that assured me that my credit
was not a problem because the plan allowed
me to pay off every past due bill that had
piled up while I was hospitalized, backed
out at the last minute.
One broker from Western Thrift and
Loan, Mike Ferry, hung in and that is the
reason you are able to read this account.
But he met with so many problems that he
was stunned. Is this the reason a mortgage
application is run through Homeland Security
now After the last lender continued
to find a problem with everything from
my signature on one page of eight to the
paperwork of a ten year old trust, my broker
told me he had found, the "nigger in
the woodpile!"; One man in charge of disbursing
the funds at Accredited Home
Lenders in Orange, CA by the name of
Steve Schwartz! Evidently the ADL has
long arms. The broker told me it is called
"Redlining", discrimination against a race,
religion, economic group or Clay Douglas!
It is a violation of Federal Law." Good luck
proving it or getting the FBI to investigate.
After much hair pulling and name calling,
the money finally came through.
Trying to juggle all of the business details
and trying to find honest help did not
leave time for many dates. One of my Thunder
Riders salesmen tried to convert all of
my advertisers to another biker magazine
and another ran a hot check he passed off
as an investment through my account.
Scammer! Then suddenly, I began to get
response on Yahoo from some really beautiful
women. They were not only beautiful;
they were sensitive, loving and sensual.
Unfortunately, they were no more real than
the hot checks their "clients" sent me and
most of them were an ocean away.
Once I closed down Thunder Riders
and made the decision to start Free American
again and moved back to New Mexico
I had less help and more to do than I had
time on my hands. I was doing my show

on the Internet and figured I might be able
to find some investors or help, using the
Internet, since I was so far away from any
major town.
It wasn't until the response started flowing
in that I noticed the posters appearing
in the banks from the FBI warning Americans
about the Nigerian scams. A light
dawned but it was a little late. I was so sharp
and streetwise that I wasn't worried about
being scammed; I sent no money to anyone
except a few instances to aid in my investigations.
I got help. Over a million dollars in investments
and checks came in from those
who wanted to help..... All in hot checks
and forged money orders!
Because of my website and shortwave
broadcasts and now my presence on the
Internet, I was so well known I got a lot of
contacts. But the volume and nature of these
attacks and scams has made me suspicious.
Being the paranoid and conspiracy oriented
person that I am, it seems that perhaps there
was an intelligence of sorts directing these
operations. They could be using the lack
of an extradition treaty with Nigeria to not
only scam Americans out of millions, but
to use the beautiful women, who might be
part of the Israeli white slavery/prostitution
rings, to target prominent and unpopular
enemies without fear of retribution or interference
by the FBI. See the story in this
issue.
According to the FBI, the Nigerian and
Ghanaian scammers operate with the blessings
of the local governments because they
constitute the largest industry in these African
Countries.
This book, while containing personal
information about me and detailed photos,
some graphic, should serve as a warning to
all Americans of the insidious nature of
these scammers. If an investigative reporter
and a streetwise biker can be led into this
convoluted world where nothing is real,
imagine what could happen to the average
man or woman, looking for love, sucked
into this, offered big bucks and beautiful
companions for so little money. But multiply
that by a few million lonely men and
vulnerable women and you have an industry
as big as drugs. This story is only a sampling
of the information I have gathered. It
will soon be a book. One of many I am
sending out to other publishers in my attempt
to restructure my life in some semblance
of sanity.
This issue has been delayed by forces
or circumstances beyond my control: The
theft of my computer and every weapon
with which I might have been able to defend
myself with, including my bows and
arrows, and the destruction of my other
computers by means unknown (not viruses)
were factors. Your subscriptions will be

I have been going through all of my order
books and trying to make sure your subs
are updated since the updated list was in
the stolen computer. If you have ordered a

But this theft and the unexplainable, recurring
delays in my attempt to get my property
refinanced to keep this magazine going
are only the latest of ten years of escalating
attacks and mishaps of which I have
kept you apprised. These incidents are simply
outside the realm of statistically possible
accidents. These problems are not attributable
to errors of judgment, mistakes
in marketing or my combative, aggressive
personality. Within the last month my
website was taken down after a large company
bought out the company who has
hosted my site for the last ten years. After a
few months of hassles that had never been
there before, the new company shut down
my site and everyone else’s, stopped answering
their phones, and we could not
come up with the codes to trnasfer my domain
to another provider. Finally the phone
rang and it was the former owner who asked
if I would like to get my site back up. Hell
yes was my answer. Seems the people who
bought the company, never bothered to pay
for it and split leaving everyone hanging.

Kind of like blowing up a plane to get one
man.
No sooner did my site get back up and
operating on a limited basis, but another
problem surfaced.
Someone sent a check made out to in
my banker’s name. The check was mailed
directly to the bank with one of my account
numbers on the back. The banker called.
She told me someone had sent me a check
for $3750.00 but they had put her name
on iit. I asked her to check and see if the
check was good. If it was, I asked her if
she could just deposit it. My mistake. The
check turned out to be bad like so many
others that i never let get to the bank. Usually,
the manager and I found out they were
bad, I took a copy of the check and envelope
to the Sheriif’s office and went on with
my business. This time the asst. Manager
turned me in for trying to deposit a fraudulent
check. I went by the next day to learn
where it had come from, but she would not
let me see it, would not give me a cop[y to
take to the sheriff, and by the time I got
back itno town from Albqueque, my account
had been closed and my money frozen.
No way for my credit cards to go into
the account, no way to use my debit cards
to get gas, so by the next morning my account
on the computer showed that I was
888,888.00 overdrawn and since teh cars I
had run for $132.00 could not go in, I was
overdraw by $20. But a meeting with a lawyer
and some good advice and we will be
back up and operating as usual shortly.
Yes. It is discouraging. But people enjoy
my articles, films and books and the
articles I select have been accurate and
years ahead of main stream news. What we
talked about years ago in the Free American
are today’s headlines. And as you will
see in this issue, I am not the first to be
attacked, harassed, demonized and made a
target. You can call me unlucky and laugh
at my problems and blame it on my outspokenness,
but I am the canary in the coal
mine, and when you become aware of the
hidden war and unseen enemies, you and
your family might have a chance to stand
up for right, not might. I have been attacked,
subjected to demonization but you are holding
in your hands the best defense to tyranny.

prison camps and ghettos of the New
World Order Police State.

one uncompromised party out there. I can

charter and I have pleadged the Free American
to back it and promote it. If they want
me, I will run for any office in the state
they would like me to, and I will be happy
to debate any Rebublican or Democrat out
there. I may be too controbersial to win but
then again, maybe the American people are
ready for the truth. And there is another
factor out there that I may be able to appeal
to. We have over 30% of Americans
either behind bards or on probation or parole.
It may be time to organzie the Guglag
Refugees to reclaim American from the
growing police state.
The rest of the stories in this issue follow
traditional lines but all will show you
that we are all in the grips of the greatest
scammers of all, the ones who control the
TV that controls your minds and pulls the
strings of your government.
We are being set up for a total police
state that will make the former Soviet Union
and Red China look like desirable countries
to live in. The targeting of Clay Douglas
follows the pattern of attacks against
a long line of notable people, people like
the intellectuals in Red China, Russia, Germany,
Joe McCarthy, Ernst Zundel, Eustace
Mullins and Ezra Pound here. When a coup
occurs, it is important to take out all who
have the intellectual ability to discern who
and what is responsible for the atrocities
that will follow.
The new laws allow for the suspension
of Habeas Corpus and the imprisonment
of people like me with no explanation, no
notification of our families, and no access
to an attorney. What is happening to me
alone here in Bingham is happening to millions
of Americans in our towns and cities.
The Internet is a double edged sword. It
gives us access to information previously
hidden, but it opens us up to scammers,
tracking, monitoring and isolates us at the
same time. We should approach it with caution.
It does not provide us with the safety,
security and familiarity of the community.
In some strange way, Hillary Clinton was
right about it takes a village. We do need a
village. This was the concept that I envisioned
with Liberty Villages, smaller
homes, smaller, tighter, self-sufficient communities.
And they are out there, Liberty
Villages by the thousands. The basis of the
America we once had. Many abandoned
and dying like Bingham. Just waiting for
the right people to abandon the New World
Order concentration camps, factories and
prisons we call cities and come back home.
I believe that we can stand up against
the New World Order just as Jesus, Washington
and Jefferson did in their day. I, for
one, refuse to be silent and submit to slavery,
in whatever format they seek to conceal
it. I will continue publishing this magazine
if I get the advertisers and support any
magazine needs to exist. It may not be in
the slick format needed to get on the bookstore
shelves right away but I will continue
to write, create and speak out against all
forms of tyranny and attempts to enslave
or divide mankind.
They may kill me, they may even eat
me, but they will never enslave me.

The Internet as
Psychological Warfare

This article is hard to write, because it
feels like an admission of failure. I have
tried to revive the Free American. I have
tried to establish Liberty Villages. By
chance or design, everything that has happened
has played a part in preventing me
from rebuilding the magazine to what it
should be..
My accident, that was no accident, was
the beginning. When the woman failed to
kill me, three hospitals kept me sedated
with mind altering drugs for three months.
This led to the loss of my wife and my
sons went back to Colorado. This loss sent
me to the Internet to find a way to replace
them and after I moved back to Bingham,
and could find no one local to help, I went
to the Net to find employees and backers
and investors. This was a signal of my
weakness. I was sending up a red flag that
opened the door to hundreds of offers,
hundreds of inquiries and almost to my
ultimate destruction. But I soon learned
that I was not the only one that was undergoing
this kind of attacks. It was happening
to ordinary Americans who were
not politically active or whose views were
not controversial. The FBI told me that
they think the governments of Ghana and
Nigeria were iinvolved and they put up
signs in banks to warn Americans. After
everything that has happened, the only
disagreement I have with them, is that I
think there are more than the governments
of Ghana and Nigeria involved.
The offers I began to receive were so
intricate and varied that I began to keep a
detailed record of what I knew to be scams,
what I thought could be scams, and a few
that seemed to be just lost souls not much
different from me, looking for someone
to love. But I thought I was dealing with
people who were honest. The lawyers and
the law enforcement I thought I was helping
to stop the scammers, were in fact the
real scammers. A lawsuit fought a half a
world away, was resolved and suddenly I
had won a large amount of money . . .
money that could help immensely in the
fight for freedom here. But there is no way
to check on anything or anyone that is on
Yahoo.
It was backed up by documentation
from Barclay’s Bank and the High Court
of Ghana. All I had to do was send the

system here. And the international
aspect of Barclays Bank got me. But no
matter what I sent, there was always something
else that needed to be done. None
of the money I supposedly won ever materialized.
I tried to hire help from there to bring
here. They ripped me off. I sent money to
bring the help I needed. No one came. And
while I looked for help locally, but no one
even applied for an interview.
I refinanced my property to get working
capitol and to clear up my damaged
credit. I paid off my ex-wife, got clear title,
paid off every debt I owed, but there was
delay after delay and the mortgage company
shaved off point after point until,
when it was all said and done, months
longer that expected, I got some money, a
much higher interest rate and no help here.
And my credit rating went down not up.
Then the death threats began when the
banks there, afraid of the fact that I had
sued one successfully, did not want me to
reveal who they were and how they operated.
I was even told that American operatives
of Al Qaeda would be used
against me.
I understand that poor people will do
anything they can to try to scrape out a
living in that AIDS racked continent. I understand
crooked lawyers and politicians,
here and there. But over the internet you
cannot tell who is honest, who is truthful
or even if who you are talking to is a man,
woman, white or black. But this human
elements sets the stage for a form of psychological
warfare unlike any known before.
I am in the process of cataloging all of
the conversations and all of the means by
which they con Americans out of money
and prey on the lonely and alone. It will
be a book entitled, “SCAMMERS. A
DESCENT INTO MADNESS”
The distractions and the lies took a
chunk of money from me, but the lack of
help here in New Mexico and America did
far more damage. I spent all of my time
trying to fill orders, pay bills, keep my
health while I tried to revive the Free
American. What hurt me more than the
Scammers was the complete lack of help,
support, or advertising from the Patriot
community that I had devoted my life to
here in America.
Outside of a small percentage of my
former subscribers who have signed up
and ordered some products, I have not had
the time necessary to get advertisers, sales
people or ever radio time. RBN John
Stadtmiller cut me off after two shows for
no real reason.
Then last month, my website went
down. The company that had been hosting
it for ten years sold out to a larger company
last year. Then suddenly all of the
webcites are down. My e-mail wasn’t
working, No one answered the phones
anymore at CyberConnectics. The
Cybcon.com website is down, and I could
not get access to the codes needed to
change providers. A large company had
bought a successful business and did not
pay the owner or provide the service for
their customers. I know because Les
Fenison, the former owner of
CyberConnectics, called me and told me
he had all the codes needed to get my cite
back up and running. He also let me know
that I was not the only one who had to
deal with SCAMMERS and that they were
from America too.
But without the support in America for
what we are trying to do, I am in worse
shape that Ernst Zundel, recently sentenced
to five years for doing and saying
less than I have about the Zionists. These
attacks could come from the computers of
Israel as easily as they could come from
Ghana or Nigeria. It is a sophisticated form
of warfare that is beyond the scope of a
few Nigerians. I sit here and work on
the next issue and the phone does not ring.
People like Texe Marrs will not return my
calls. Why
It is this lack of support that opens the
door for the kind of psychological warfare
that it being turned on me now. It is
the reason John Trockmann of the Militia
of Montana, turned his back on the American
people, saying, “To Hell with them
Clay, We tried to tell them what was coming
and they did nothing to help us or support
us. They deserve the government they

The Patriot’s Preamble
“Let it be known far and wide that American Patriots will
come together in the year 2007, to unite the citizens and
statesmen of the Republic of the United States of America.
They will gather with the purpose of maintaining our nation’s
sovereignty, to reinstate our Constitutional and Natural
Rights, and to free the American people from institutional
servitude. They will come to pursue this course with Honor,
Dignity, and Courage, while acknowledging that unless God
keeps our nation and guides her steps, we will have labored in
vain.”
The United States of America and its citizenry has been assessed,
warned, plotted against, and sold out by internationalists
in government, business, and the banking industry. Its
workforce has been decimated, its standard of living shredded
and its working people made financial slaves through unjust taxation,
socialist government practices, rules and regulations at all
levels in society that would make any communist dictator grin
with envy.
Our role as partners in governmental affairs has been reduced
to a whisper that is not heard by any elected official anywhere—
with very, very few exceptions. Our representative government
has become 535 regional dictators who live a life of luxury, selfimportance
and as arrogant master over the populace. The congress
of the United States has carefully exempted itself from
virtually all repressive laws they choose not to adhere to and
have given themselves retirement pensions, health care and other
perks, the rest of us can only dream of. They have become the
Duma (Soviet Parliament) types who exemplify nothing other
than crass selfishness at the expense of every American working
citizen.
The Bush Administration has been pursuing a blending of
Canada, America and Mexico into the “North American Union.”
They have done it under the cover of governmental darkness.
They have been running a race as to how fast they can manipulate
our great nation into a “no going back” strategic position
with these other two nations. The president and his cabal of sellout
White House/Congressional turncoats have intentionally kept
the American people in a state of confusion (war on terror, etc.)
so that organized resistance to this national sovereignty killing
plan can not be formulated. Business and banking interests are
salivating at the thought of trillions of dollars in “free trade”
being exchanged throughout North America.
The cultures of Canada and Mexico are not that of the United
States and its citizens. A disaster of Biblical proportions is on its
way WHEN this plan is forced upon our nation. It is only one of
several scenarios that are nearing completion and will spell the
absolute end of the United States as we know it. Some will argue
that the USA needs drastic overhauling and that this is the

natural result of “planned obsolescence” in American culture.
There are huge problems that must be addressed
(www.heartlandusaparty.org) now by the American public, or
the last opportunity to do so under “open and free” conditions
will be lost. There is no more time to talk this sorry state of
affairs to death. Decisive and uncompromising action must be
taken. Here is what I suggest to my fellow victims:

AND PUT IT ON ITS BACKSIDE
Unless you accept that this country is in its LAST days, you
will continue to shake your heads and laugh at all who have written
week after week to help you realize just how much will SOON
be lost to our nation forever. You will be counted among those
who were as responsible as the complicit socialist Washington
government for our national demise precisely because you were
intentionally ignorant. The power through information written by
authors of brilliant and inciteful backgrounds has given a massive
amount of data that could have and should have made a difference
in your lives, your interest in government actions, and a marvelous
treasure chest of debate justifications when you discuss
these issues with others.
There is NO TIME LEFT for you to take the luxury of noninvolvement.
You will face a time when you will give an account
to your family as to why you couldn’t or wouldn’t take the time to
educate yourself about your nation’s sacred history. You will stand
alone as the verdict comes in that you were negligent in NOT
preparing to protect and care for your family and friends during
military government (Martial Law) because of a “terrorist” attack,
financial/stock market collapse or any other number of possibilities
real or contrived that gives the government the justification
for arrest and indefinite incarceration in detention camps already
built for you and your loved ones. THEY ALREADY EX-
IST!! These detention/ re-education camps are for those who aren’t
willing to submit to the new global order that is about to be established.
Precisely because you are uninformed and intentionally ignorant,
you will blindly board the truck that takes you to your likely
last destination. You will trust the government to help you one last
time. Some of you will stumble around the camp looking for your
welfare check, prescription drugs or how you can contact the nearest
legal defense or ACLU attorney so that you can take the camp
commander to court for mistreatment. You, who I have just described,
deserve a detention camp. “…..may your chains rest lightly
upon your wrists.”
All of us MUST take responsibility for what is coming. Many
of us have adamantly fought against the rising tide of a police
state government.Try to understand you do not always get chance
We are losing badly. NOT because we don’t care, NOT because
we haven’t tried, and certainly NOT because we haven’t committed
to resisting this complete sell-out of the Founders dream for
this nation and its people. We are failing because YOU have not
protested at the school board meetings, the city council chambers,
the county commission boards and the state and federal legislatures
while you still have freedom of speech. Because, out of indifference
or fear, you have not stood up to this criminal neglect
and criminal actions against our constitution, these elected sellouts
have sensed your negligence and have had the boldness to
give America away to the highest bidder.
You have allowed the Federal Reserve to “regulate” our cur-

ency into a mountain of debt and steer the dollar into oblivion.
You have allowed Congress to abandon gold and silver and encouraged
the mighty international consortium of bankers to call
every political policy in Washington. You have allowed presidents
and representatives to subvert our constitution to the point of irrelevance
because many of you who were constitutional experts
would not challenge these republic killing “laws” at their source
or in the courts. Above all, you have allowed yourself to be compromised
when serving on the jury, a good example is how a brainwashed
jury convicted 2 innocent border agents for shooting an
illegal drug smuggler.
Many of you in the medical field have believed your own myth
building lifestyle that suggests you are some type of god that sells
pharmaceuticals like snake oil to unsuspecting people who can
neither understand nor challenge your control of their lives, let
alone afford the drugs that they “needed.” You have refused to
endorse less expensive, natural remedies that could have made
the critical difference for some or avoided the pain and expense
of chemo “cures” for cancer in others that in most cases only
prolonged the agony of those buying in to your version of medicine.
There is a movement to ban natural vitamins and you are
silent there, as well.
You business owners who scammed the public or charged obscene
prices for your products, and then squeezed the worker and
his family into poverty, take a short second place in shame to
America’s bankers. The oldest professions in the world are not
prostitution or politicians, but bankers. You alone shoulder the
responsibility along with the Federal Reserve for bankrupting
America’s families and our nation’s financial system. Jail for individuals
mentioned here is kind compared to a hangman’s noose
in my view.
Regardless of the cause or the effect, America is on her knees.
She is a haggard old woman unable to understand who she used
to be. No longer are the strong arms of brave young men and
women able to help her to her feet. There is no one left who knows
this original America or cares.
I appeal to my friends in the law enforcement community.
Whether you are serving now, retired, or were in short of full
retirement, the burden has fallen to you. There is no time left to
muddle this about. The nation needs you now and will in the near
future. When I left law enforcement, I never had to sign a statement
giving up my oath. I did not give up that oath to defend
America from all enemies—foreign and domestic—when I left
the military. I have no intention of abandoning America now, in
her time of ultimate peril. I have stood in that great gap. I have
been shot at. I have fought for my life along a lonely stretch of
highway against tall odds to bring in two or three wanted fugitives.
I have tracked the killers through dark fields and deserted
farmhouses. I have held the dying and comforted them to the end.
I am no hero, just someone dedicated to seeing to it that as many
as possible do not have to face a horrible police state America,
where those older, traditional police officer—peace officers—big
men with big hearts were the ideal of our communities, no longer
exist.
All people from all walks of life are invited, encouraged, and
desperately needed to attend our two day summit in KC this summer.
I believe it to be one of the last best chances to make a real,
long lasting difference in our nation. We may fail, but we will
surely at least give our very best. I am asking our newly formed

“Centurions for America” organization to stand with me and other
gallant police officers from all levels of service to come to Kansas
City. I am asking these great men and women to absolutely promise
that they will not submit their badge and their oath to a criminal
element masquerading as government officials. I ask that all
of you help these men and women assume their last great roll call
assignment as defenders of their communities against crime and
criminal activity from WHATEVER source. If those of you who
were trained to serve and protect, fail in this coming confrontation
with world-wide forces of evil whose only goal is the destruction
of America and her people, then indeed, the fight has
been lost.
Winston Churchill said it best when he declared in a speech to
the British Parliament in 1943, “you may have to fight knowing
that there is absolutely no chance for success and you will surely
not survive, but to live on as a slave is a far worse fate.” Where
will you stand my law enforcement friends When the government
moves against its people to institute martial law or implement
a “North American Union,” or sign on to the United Nations
World Government, will you let our communities and beloved
homes be sold to international elites My heart says NOT EVER!
Let’s agree to stand together as necessary and in the manner in
which our nation requires us to stand. Not government politics
nor embedded traitors dictates, but the needs of our constitution,
our Declaration of Independence with its new relevance for our
time, and for the dedication of hundreds of thousands of soldiers,
sailors, airmen, marines, coast guardsmen, merchant marines and
police officers at all levels who have answered the call and given
their all so that you and I, our children and grandchildren could be
free. It is to them that I humbly say, “yes, sir, I am reporting as
needed.” Fellow Americans, you are needed NOW. Get involved,
NOW. Call these arrogant self-serving, liberal bureaucrats and
DEMAND change NOW. Show up at the city and county meetings
where your community is being fenced in around an Agenda
21 model that will kill private property usage and ownership. Don’t
be fooled into accepting an unelected, unaccountable county manager
who doesn’t represent you, but rather serves the good-ol-boy
system. Keep your county commissioners, who are elected and
accountable to we, the people.
Don’t count on your church leadership to expose evil and save
America. They have compromised their principles for money and
relationship building and can no longer discern evil. Jesus said
when salt loses its savor it is to be trodden underfoot. Pastors
have lost their savor, and in the process, have lost their backbone
and the love for their fellow man. They fear IRS more than God.
Finally, ask Almighty God to bless your efforts, protect you
and your family from the evil, and as Churchill also said in
England’s darkest hour, “NEVER, NEVER, EVER GIVE UP.”
America is worth every effort we make fellow lawmen, even unto
death. Let’s stand together now and win the battle by the force of
truth, conviction of a righteous cause, and with the help of our
friends and fellow citizens, in a powerful and persuasive show of
solidarity in defense of a free and honorable America.
What do cockroaches and evil in people have in common When
exposed they both run for cover. Political Correctness is the cloak
that protects evil. And remember that Truth is hate to those who
hate the Truth.

A Visit in Prison
with Ernst Zuendel

During the recent conference in Iran (Review
of the Holocaust: Global Vision) I was
in prison in Mannheim, Germany interviewing
Ernst Zuendel. Labeled a “Holocaust denier,”
Ernst has been in jail for almost four
years without being charged with a violent
crime or without even being convicted of a
non-violent one. He is 67 year old.
As a six-year old Ernst witnessed the Allied
firebombing of Pforzheim in which ten
to twenty thousand German civilians were
killed. As a teenager he became a pacifist; at
age 19 he moved to Canada to avoid serving
in the post-war German army. In Canada he
worked as a graphic artist and publisher specializing
in 20th century German history.
Many of the books he republished questioned
the Holocaust, such as the underground booklet
Did Six Million Really Die by Richard
Harwood. Others he merely distributed, like
The Rudolf Report by Germar Rudolf, An
Eye for an Eye: The Untold Story of Jewish
Revenge Against Germans in 1945 by John
Sack, and Jewish Supremacism: My Awakening
to the Jewish Question by David Duke.
He also sold books on UFOs and alternative
medicines.
Ernst’s interest in history and revisionism
led him to dispute and challenge specific
“facts” about the Holocaust. He claimed
1. that Hitler’s “Final Solution” was intended
to be ethnic cleansing, not extermination
2. that there were no homicidal gas chambers
used by the Third Reich. (He did not
deny that there were gas chambers used for
disinfection.
3. there were fewer than 6 million Jews
killed of the alleged 55 million who died in
WWII
Over the years such firmly held beliefs
expressed in writing and later on his wife’s
Internet site (www.zundelsite.org ) caused him to be
charged with incitement. He was tried twice
in Canada. In the middle of the second trial
in 1988, Ernst sent the first forensic team to
Auschwitz. It was this “Leuchter Expedition”
and the subsequent Leuchter Report that he
believed revolutionized Holocaust revisionism,
taking it beyond the “he said, she said...”
testimonies and into the realm of solid forensic
science.
Such endeavors made him the target of
those who protect the standard Holocaust
narrative. He survived three assassination
attempts, including by arson and pipe bomb,
and although he lived in Canada for 42 years,
he was never able to gain Canadian citizenship
even though immigration officials had
described his application as “flawless.”
While some consider his views to border
on heresy, freedom of speech in both the
United States and Canada protected his right
to publish and distribute the truth as he sees
it. But neither our Bill of Rights nor the pleadings
of his lawyers could prevent his being
rendered by the United States, forced back to
Canada, and then on to Germany where denying
or revising certain aspects of the Holocaust
is a crime.
The Latest Incarceration
On February 5, 2003, Ernst was arrested
at his home in the mountain region of eastern
Tennessee. He was seized on the pretext that
he had violated immigration regulations, or
had missed an interview date with US immigration
authorities, even though he had entered
the US legally, was married to an American
citizen, had been checked out by the FBI,
had been given a health check, a work permit,
and a social security number, had no
criminal record, and was trying to secure status
as a permanent legal resident.
After being held for two weeks, he was
deported to Canada. For the next two years
— from mid-February 2003 to March 1, 2005
— he was held in solitary confinement in the
Toronto West Detention Centre, on the charge
that he was a threat to national security. Like
others who suffer rendition, there was no bail,
no public trial, and no appeal. His mail was
censored and the lights in his cell were kept
on day and night.
On March 1, 2005 Ernst was put in handcuffs
and leg irons on a private jet and deported
from Canada to Germany where he
has been held as an a prisoner under investigation.
As in Canada, bail was again denied.
On June 29, 2005, the state’s prosecutor, Mr.
Grossman, formally charged him with inciting
“hatred” by having written or distributed
texts that “approve, deny or play down” genocidal
actions carried out by Germany’s wartime
regime, and which “denigrate the
memory of the [Jewish] dead.” The trial began
on November 8, 2005, eight months after
he arrived in Germany.
Ernst is confined to his cell 22 ¾ hours
per day. He has no access to phone or Internet
and he may not communicate anything about
the trial. He is able to receive two 30-minute
visits per month, but all conversations must
be in German or must be conducted through
a prison-approved translator.
Still Ernst remains upbeat and convinced
that he has made a contribution to the truth
surrounding WWII and the Holocaust. He
does not deny that millions of people suffered
at the hands of the Nazis, including millions
of Jews, who were worked to death and suffered
from disease (especially typhus) and
who were often deliberately murdered both
inside and outside of concentration camps.

But he does not regard Jewish suffering as
unique. He considers his efforts to tell the
truth about the Holocaust as ground breaking
and is satisfied to let others continue the
research.
Ernst believes that Zionists treat the Holocaust
as a sword and a shield to deflect criticism
of their racist quest to build a Jewish
state in Palestine, a state in which over half
the people today are not Jewish, “the state”
being defined as all the land currently controlled
by Israel, including West Bank, Gaza,
and the Golan Heights. He regards himself
as a political prisoner of Zionists who try to
erase his contributions and punish him with
defamation and imprisonment.
A Day in Court
An admirer once described Ernst Zuendel
as “an outgoing, good-humored man who is
blessed with a rare combination of unflagging
optimism and practical ability. He maintains
this infectious spirit even under very trying
conditions. He is an unusually alert and
sensitive individual with a keen understanding
of human nature. He inspires confidence,
loyalty and affection.” On December 7, 2006
I witnessed his trial in Mannheim and found
this description to be uncannily accurate.
On that particular day those in the courtroom
included Ernst, three judges, three jurors,
a court reporter, three defense attorneys,
four armed guards, twenty-four spectators,
and one prosecutor, Mr. Grossman. Ernst
wore an old blue suit with a red tie; he was
attentive; he often smiled approvingly when
something was said with which he agreed.
The guards were friendly but disinterested.
Facing the court, all the participants sat on
the left hand side, except the state prosecutor
who sat all by himself at a table on the right
side. The jurors and the court reporter sat in
line with the judges on an elevated platform
along the front and the spectators sat in rows
along the back wall. No media were present.
The spectators were clearly there for

Ernst. Most were German men in their late
60s or 70s; there were also a couple of
younger women. Several men commented
that they were proud of having been to every
court session with Ernst over the past 21
months. Although they had not met him personally,
they were following his trial closely
and were supportive of him. They were helpful
to my American Jewish colleague and me
and guided us through the security outside
the courtroom and made sure we got front
row seats so that we could fully appreciate
the courtroom experience. Many spoke English
and had sons and daughters in America.
Most were retired but one younger man had
taken time off from work to witness this day
of the trial.
Ernst and his attorneys have not been allowed
to discuss or challenge the veracity of
the facts about the Holocaust, including facts
that Ernst disputes and about which he would
like to submit scientific evidence and expertwitness
testimony.
Offenkundigkeit, the German version of
judicial notice, precludes it. The court is only
allowed to consider if Ernst denied these particular
facts and if so, when and where and
how. During our visit, one of Ernst’s attorneys,
84-year old Dr. Herbert Schaller[1],
read a lengthy and impassioned statement
saying that he believed in the same facts of
the Holocaust as does Ernst and by so stating
this he too is guilty. He ended by saying
that in over 53 years of practicing law he had
until now never been guilty of the same crime
as the man he was charged to defend. The
head judge, Ulrich Meinerzhagen, appeared
tired, agitated, and ready to explode.
Visiting Ernst in prison
It is not easy to visit Ernst Zuendel. He is
allowed only two 30-minute visits per month,
one hour if the visitor travels more than 100
km. Though I wrote and faxed the prison a
dozen times beginning in February 2006, the
answer was always the same, no answer. But
through his wife, Ingrid, Ernst knew that a
colleague and I wished to visit him and he
asked the judge to grant us permission to do
so. Finally on September 23rd Judge
Meinerzhagen told Ernst to tell his wife to
tell me to fax him and formally request a visit.
We were to each include a copy of our
résumés and a copy of our passports.
Another month passed before we received
the visitation permission. Once we had that
document, stamped and signed by the judge,
we were able to make an appointment at the
prison in Mannheim. On arrival the guards
filled out a long form on each of us. They
took our passports and had us put everything
else in a locker. Then we were searched,
warned against speaking English, and told to
cross the courtyard to the visitation rooms.
There we sat on one side of a table with a
plastic shield in the middle; they brought Ernst

from the other side and allowed him to sit
across from us while a guard sat at the end to
monitor both parties. We asked if it was permissible
to shake hands and the guard smiled
and said that would be all right.
Ernst began by asking us to contact his
wife and tell her that he looked well and that
he missed her. He had not been in contact
with her for several weeks and he was worried
that she would be worried about him.
Then he asked if my colleague’s family had
discouraged him from making this trip. My
friend understood what Ernst was a king, but
he was unable to answer in German, so I had
to tell Ernst that indeed pressure had been
put on us both not to have anything to do with
a Holocaust “denier.”
We asked Ernst about life in prison and
his relationship with guards and other prisoners.
He described a typical day and told us
that he had only limited contact with other
prisoners, but that they were friendly towards
him. So too were the guards, especially because
he followed the rules and was a threat
to no one. He often asked the man monitoring
our visit to corroborate what he was saying,
almost as if to include him in the conversation.
He talked about history and philosophy
and about recent books he had read. He
praised the prison library, which he said,” was
markedly better than the one in the US jail in
Tennessee, which had “only Tom Clancy novels
and one old book on the US Presidents.”
I had been forced to leave my notes outside
and though I had many questions, I was
not allowed to ask him anything about the
trial, not even the names of his attorneys. The
hour passed quickly and the guard soon told
us we would have to go. When we stood we
looked questioningly at the guard and he nodded
to us. We shook hands with Ernst, slowly,
he taking each of our hands in both of his.
They were big, soft, and warm; although Ernst
is only six years older than I, he reminded me
of my father saying goodbye when we last
parted.
Holocaust Denial
Contrary to the warning given to people
who currently tour Auschwitz, “Holocaust
denial” is not infectious. In many ways the
term is used as an epithet to discredit and
demean those who question facts surrounding
the Holocaust. Nor is Holocaust denial
anti-Semitic; there are many Jews who question
facts about the Holocaust and many more
who object to its being used to elevate Jewish
suffering above that of others.[2] Treating
those who question the Holocaust as heretics
reveals the degree to which the Holocaust
itself has become a religion, a faith to
be accepted and worshiped with spectacular
memorials, best-selling books, and mandatory
curricula for school children.
Ernst believes that Jewish groups have
wanted him jailed for promoting views that
the Jewish-Zionist lobby considers harmful
to its interests. He claims that the only sustained
and institutionalized efforts to imprison
him have come from this lobby, which
includes the Simon Wiesenthal Center, the
Canadian Jewish Congress, the Canadian Holocaust
Remembrance Association, and the

the ACLU refused to defend his right of free
speech.[3]
Ernst Zuendel is neither a monster nor a
heretic. He is a man with strong convictions
and the courage to express them. He views
himself not as a Holocaust “denier,” but rather
as a Holocaust revisionist. For that he has been
rendered by the United States, which otherwise
professes to protect the right of free
speech and the writ of habeas corpus, and by
Canada, both countries in which he broke no
law. To force him back to his birth country to
be tried for a “crime” which he never committed
in Germany is unjust. Those who
would incarcerate revisionists like Ernst
Zuendel and hold them, without bail, for years
on end to drain them of their resources and to
silence them as “Prisoners of Zion” could well
be labeled as “justice deniers.” END
Scientists Threatened for
'Climate Denial'
Scientists who questioned mankind's impact
on climate change have received death
threats and claim to have been shunned by
the scientific community.
They say the debate on global warming
has been "hijacked" by a powerful alliance
of politicians, scientists and environmentalists
who have stifled all questioning about
the true environmental impact of carbon dioxide
emissions.
Timothy Ball, a former climatology professor
at the University of Winnipeg in
Canada, has received five deaths threats by
email since raising concerns about the degree
to which man was affecting climate
change. One warned that, if he continued to
speak out, he would not live to see further
global warming.
"Western governments have pumped
billions of dollars into careers and institutes
and they feel threatened," said the professor.
"I can tolerate being called a sceptic because
all scientists should be sceptics, but
then they started calling us deniers, with all
the connotations of the Holocaust. That is
an obscenity. It has got really nasty.

The Destruction of Joe McCarthy:
There are profound lessons for today's
White Americans in the saga of this misled hero.

"Average Americans can do very little insofar as digging
Communist espionage agents out of our government is concerned.
They must depend upon those of us whom they
send down here to man the watch-towers of the nation.
The thing that I think we must remember is that this is a
war, which a brutalitarian force has won to a greater
extent than any brutalitarian force has won a war in the
history of the world before.
"You can talk about Communism as though it's something
ten thousand miles away. Let me say it's right here
with us now. Unless we make sure that there is no infiltration
of our government, then just as certain as you sit there,
in the period of our lives you will see a Red world.
"Anyone who has followed the Communist conspiracy,
even remotely, and can add two and two, will tell you that
there is no remote possibility of this war which we are in
today--and it's a war, a war which we've been losing--no
remote possibility of this ending except by victory or by
death for this civilization."
THOSE WORDS were spoken 40 years ago by U.S.
Senator Joseph Raymond McCarthy, Republican of
Wisconsin, a man who since has been demonized unjustly.
Since McCarthy's time the subversion of our
nation has proceeded steadily, and his warning to us
resonates more and more clearly as truth, now that
death for this civilization is in view.
Joseph McCarthy's fame as an anti-Communist began with a
speech he delivered on February 9, 1950, to the Republican
Women's Club in Wheeling, West Virginia, in which he said that
there were at least 57 known Communists in the U.S. State De-
partment, and that the State Department knew they were there.
McCarthy's charge was credible, because President Harry
Truman's Secretary of State at the time, Dean Acheson (pictured,
on the Time cover below), was well known as a man sympathetic
to Communism and Communists.
As far back as the 1930s Acheson had worked as a lawyer on
behalf of Stalin's regime, prior to the diplomatic recognition of
the Soviet Union by the
United States, and recently
he had ignored
reports about the Communist
Party connections
of his protege at
the State Department,
Alger Hiss. Acheson
also had been the chief
U.S. advisor at the Yalta
Conference, in February
1945, which consigned
eastern Europe
to Communist rule, and
he presided over the
drafting of the United
Nations Charter. In the
State Department
Acheson fostered the
careers of Communists
and stifled the careers of anti-Communists.
Furthermore, as Ohio's Republican Senator
Robert Taft
said at the time, "Pro-Communist policies of the State Department
fully justify

and pro-Communists on the government payroll, but FDR refused
to take action, saying:
“I do not believe in Communism any more than you do, but
there is nothing wrong with the Communists in this country. Several
of the best friends I have are Communists. . . . I do not
regard the Communists as any present or future threat to our
country; in fact, I look upon Russia as our strongest ally in the
years to come. As I told you when you began your investigation,
you should confine yourself to Nazis and Fascists.
While I do not believe in Communism, Russia is far better
off and the world is safer under Communism than under the
Czars.”
Under the circumstances, McCarthy's charge that there were
57 known Communists in the State Department seems very modest.
McCarthy had been a maverick from the beginning. In 1949
he had dared champion the cause of German prisoners of war
held in connection with the alleged "Malmédy massacre." In
truth, what had happened near the Belgian town of Malmédy in
December 1944 was unclear at the time, part of what U.S. General
Thomas T. Handy, who in 1949 was the commander in chief
of U.S. forces in Europe, called "a confused, mobile, and desperate
combat action." It is known now that a number of American
soldiers who had surrendered there to the Germans were
shortly thereafter killed in cross fire when their captors, who
were marching them to a rear area, were engaged by other U.S.
units. When their bodies were found by U.S. forces afterward
with their hands tied behind their backs, however, it appeared
that they might have been deliberately killed.
After the war, Germans who had taken part in the fighting
at Malmédy were turned over to U.S. Army Colonel A.H.
Rosenfeld and his Jewish underlings for "interrogation." The
prisoners were arbitrarily reduced to civilian status so that they
would not be protected by the Geneva Convention, and brutal
torture was used to extract confessions. When 18-year-old prisoner
Arvid Freimuth hanged himself after repeated beatings
rather than sign a "confession," the prosecutors were permitted
to use as "evidence" the unsigned statement which they themselves
had contrived.
McCarthy dared to speak against this officially sanctioned
lynching, when almost no one else had the courage to do so. By
fearlessly championing the underdogs, the defeated and vilified
Germans, and speaking out against the actual atrocities committed
by self-righteous aliens in American uniform, the Senator
demonstrated the rare moral courage that later propelled him
into the forefront of the struggle against Communism.
The Senate Judiciary Committee, chaired by Senator
Raymond Baldwin, Republican of Connecticut, was assigned to
investigate the charges of torture, but whitewashed them instead.
On July 26, 1949, Senator McCarthy withdrew in disgust from
the hearings and announced in a speech on the Senate floor that
two members of the Committee, Senator Baldwin and Senator
Estes Kefauver, Democrat of Tennessee, had law partners among
the Army interrogators they were supposedly investigating. This
was in several ways a preview of things to come.
The Jews showed instant hostility toward anyone who
interfered with their campaign of vengeance against the conquered
Germans, and so they began turning their big guns in the
media against McCarthy: a December 1949 poll of news correspondents
covering the United States Senate already had reporters
branding McCarthy "the worst Senator" -- a high honor indeed.
When McCarthy had arrived in Washington as a freshman
Senator in 1946, he had been invited to lunch by Secretary of
the Navy James Forrestal (pictured, below). McCarthy writes:,
“Before meeting Jim Forrestal I thought we were losing to
international Communism because of incompetence and stupidity
on the part of our planners. I mentioned that to Forrestal. I
shall forever remember his answer. He said, "McCarthy, consistency
has never been a mark of stupidity. If they were merely
stupid they would occasionally make a mistake in our favor."
This phrase struck me so forcefully that I have often used it
since.” (Which may explain why Forrestal was thrown from the
upper floors of the hospital in Washington)
Considering the destructive policies that thrived in Washington,
McCarthy concluded that to fight Communism effectively
it was not enough to denounce Communism in general;
anyone -- even a Communist -- could claim to oppose Communism.
The Senator decided that it was necessary to identify those
responsible for treasonous policies and then accuse them on the
basis of what they actually had done, not on the basis of the
ideas to which they paid lip service.
A special investigating subcommittee chaired by Senator
Millard Tydings, Democrat of Maryland, was set up purportedly
to investigate McCarthy's claim that Communists and pro-Communists
were being harbored in the State Department. In reality,
as Tydings himself admitted, the purpose was to silence
McCarthy. Tydings boasted, "Let me have McCarthy for three
days in public hearings, and he will never show his face in the
Senate again." Tydings' effort to discredit the upstart patriot
would be heavily aided by the major media.
One of the reporters present at the hearings was Elmer Davis,
a prominent radio commentator who had been head of the Office
of War Information (OWI). McCarthy noted: Many of
the [principals in the] cases I was about to present had once
been employees in the OWI under Davis and then had moved
into the State Department. As I glanced at Davis, I recalled that
Stanislaw Mikolajczyk, one of the anti-Communist leaders of
Poland, had warned the State Department, while Davis was head,
how Pearson would cover the story. . . .
As I waited for the chairman to open the hearing I, of course,
knew the left-wing elements of the press would twist and distort
the story to protect every Communist whom I exposed, but

frankly I had no conception of how far the dishonest news coverage
would go.
In the case of Owen Lattimore, the testimony of McCarthy's
chief witness, ex-Communist Louis Budenz, was widely misrepresented.
Lattimore was a scholar on Far Eastern affairs employed
by the State Department as a consultant; he had advised
the State Department that Chinese Communist leader Mao Tse-
Tung was merely "a liberal agrarian reformer" at a time when
Washington was still unsure how to react to Mao's efforts to
overthrow the Chinese government. In McCarthy's words:
[Budenz] . . . testified that . . . [Lattimore], who had been employed
by the government, consulted for years by State Department
officials on Far Eastern policy, and looked to by newspapermen
and magazine editors for news on Far Eastern trends,
had been a member of the Communist Party. Many newspapers
and wire services so twisted Budenz's testimony about Lattimore,
however, that it was not clear to most Americans that Lattimore
had indeed been identified positively as a Communist.
One honest reporter, Dave McConnell of the New York Heald
Tribune, wrote in the May 16, 1950, edition of his now defunct
paper that "you have to use a sieve to strain out the bias in the
McCarthy stories published in many papers."
“Tail-gunner Joe," as McCarthy was nicknamed by the
press, was seen by many as a national hero. A Gallup poll taken
May 21, 1950, showed that among the general public he had
four supporters for every three detractors. In a later Gallup poll,
taken in January 1954, 50 per cent of the public viewed him
favorably, and 29 per cent viewed him unfavorably. McCarthy
(pictured, right) was the one man in Washington, D.C., who
bucked the bipartisan pressure to be polite to America's enemies
and to "get man who took anti-Communism seriously is willing
to do something about it.
At the time conservative writer Harold Lord Varney wrote
in the American Mercury:
“McCarthy is where he is today because he satisfies the deep
national hunger for an affirmative man. In a Washington of vacillating,
irresolute,
pressuregroup-cowed
politicians, he
stands out in
sharp relief as a
man sure of
himself. His
unshaken selfconfidence
is
shown by the
opponents he
has tackled:
they have been
Marshall,
Acheson,
Tydings,
Conant -- men
in the full tide
of their authority.
And he has
never lost a major
Washington
fight. . . .

He sometimes gets too far out in front of public opinion, but
so far public opinion has always followed him. . . . Because
McCarthy has been willing to act as the shock absorber of the
main stream of pro-Communist abuse, the careers of all [other]
anti-Communists have been made easier. . . .
One far-reaching consequence of [McCarthy's fight] has been
its impact upon the American world of ideas. The climate of
American public discussion has been amazingly cleared
since McCarthy began to fight. . . . The long grip on the nation's
communications media exercised by the literary Reds and Pinkos
has been broken. .”
This is all very different, of course, from today's popular conception,
which was molded by the controlled media. Little is
said of McCarthy's popularity, which even Eisenhower dared
not challenge directly. Instead, we are led to believe that
McCarthy was a brutal tyrant who somehow managed to run
roughshod over everyone's civil liberties and give the entire country
a very bad case of claustrophobia for several years, all of this
as chairman of a Senate subcommittee.
Make no mistake about it, McCarthy did cause considerable
discomfort to some people: to the alien subversives and traitors
whose ultimate goal was and still is the New World Order. It
was these people who, in their effort to silence McCarthy, ironically
characterized him as an enemy of free speech. The First
Amendment, of course, had been drafted precisely to protect
men like McCarthy, who dared to identify treason in high places.
There were undoubtedly, however, some sincere, patriotic
Americans who agreed with McCarthy's aim of removing Communists
from government, but who found his method, with all
of its sensationalism and public-relations gimmickry, distasteful.
McCarthy's method was, as he himself explained, a last resort:
“I have followed the method of publicly exposing the truth
about men who, because of incompetence or treason, were betraying
this nation. Another method would be to take the evidence
to the President and ask him to discharge those who were
serving the Communist cause. A third method would be to give
the facts to the proper Senate committee which had the power to

hire investigators and subpoena witnesses and records. The second
and third methods . . . were tried without success. . . . The
only method left to me was to present the truth to the American
people. This I did.”
People who criticized McCarthy's public accusations merely
as being in poor taste clearly did not appreciate the gravity of
the situation and the necessity for taking action. Also it should
be noted that McCarthy had not wanted to read his original list
of 57 subversives publicly, but the Tydings Committee required
it of him. According to the Congressional Record of Feb 20,
1950, p. 2049, McCarthy protested on the Senate floor:
“I think . . . it would be improper to make the names public
until the appropriate Senate Committee can meet in executive
session and get them. . .It might leave a wrong impression.”
Unfortunately, "the wrong impression" was exactly what the
Tydings Committee wished to promote. In other words, contrary
to the reputation for "recklessness" that was applied to him,
McCarthy exercised his First Amendment right with great care.
Like some resurrected Paul Revere or latter-day Cicero, it was
he who sounded the alarm, who let the American people know
that their government had been subverted by alien interests; and
it was the shadow government of "globalists" who wished to
silence him, so that their power and their pernicious influence
would remain hidden from the American people. International
Communism and international finance -- the twin thrusts of Jewish
power -- were both ill-served by the attention McCarthy drew
to the issues of loyalty and subversion. In the 1952 elections the
Republicans captured both houses of Congress and the Presidency,
largely due to McCarthy's influence. McCarthy became
chairman of the Senate's Government Operations Committee and
its Subcommittee on Investigations. The new President, however,
was a pet of the New World Order clique, and he would
succeed where Truman had failed in discrediting McCarthy.
In the discrediting of McCarthy, there is no doubt that there
was a conspiracy at work. We know this because men who were
privy to the conspiracy later wrote books about it. The activities
of the conspirators were, of course, necessarily subtle;
Eisenhower (pictured, left) himself studiously avoided even mentioning
McCarthy's name in public, and the media coverage was
almost unbelievably biased. Thus, for the general public, the
arrangements which brought down McCarthy were a mystery,
though in essence they were very simple: McCarthy was maneuvered
into an awkward position, the major media portrayed
him as unfavorably as possible, and his colleagues deserted him.
McCarthy's reputation was destroyed chiefly by the feud that
two staffers on his Subcommittee on Investigations, Roy Cohn
and G. David Schine, conducted against the United States Army,
contrary to McCarthy's wishes.
Under pressure from influential Jewish columnist George
Sokolsky and the Jewish president of the Hearst Corporation,
Richard Berlin, both purported anti-Communists, McCarthy announced
on January 2, 1953, that 26-year-old Roy Cohn (pictured
below and to right)
would be the chief counsel of the Investigations Subcommittee.
Cohn, the son of New York Supreme Court Judge Albert Cohn,
had been well served by his Jewish connections in the past, having
been hired as an assistant U.S. attorney immediately after
passing the New York bar Examination. Cohn himself later admitted
that he was hired by McCarthy primarily because he was
a Jew:

There was a growing slander abroad in the land . that
McCarthy was a Jew-hater . . . and he wanted to deflect it. I was
the obvious answer, and the alternative -- [Robert Kennedy,] the
son of the well-known, well-documented anti-Semite Joseph P.
Kennedy, the former pro-Hitler ambassador to the Court of St.
James -- was the last person McCarthy needed to head his committee.
It probably need not be stressed that the Jews themselves
were the source of this "slander" that McCarthy felt obliged to
counter. Thus, McCarthy was stuck with Cohn; privately he expressed
the fear that if Cohn resigned for any reason the charge
of "anti-Semitism" immediately would be raised against him
again.
Furthermore, with most of the news media already solidly
against him, McCarthy was desperate for some favorable press
coverage. Illinois Republican Senator Everett Dirksen commented,
"Cohn was put on the Committee by the Hearst press,
and Joe doesn't dare lose that support."
Cohn, who died
of AIDS in 1986,
was a homosexual,
and rumor
of the perversion
became widespread
after Cohn
had brought another
young Jew,
G. David Schine,
onto McCarthy's
staff. According
to Cohn himself
in his autobiography,
Cohn and
Schine were then
rumored to be
"Jack and Jill."
This rumor was
undoubtedly a
great embarrassment
to
McCarthy, since
the controlled media
had not yet
succeeded in
making homosexuality
fashionable,
and homosexuals
were
among the security
risks to be investigated.
At Cohn's insistence,
Schine
was accepted as
an unpaid "chief
consultant" on
Communism.

had authored a pamphlet, Definition of Communism, which his
wealthy parents had allowed him to distribute in their hotel chain.
This pamphlet gave incorrect dates for the Russian Revolution
and the founding of the Communist Party, confused Marx with
Lenin, Stalin with Trotsky, and Kerensky with Prince Lvov, and
got Lenin's name wrong. The Jewish millionaire-playboy was
thus highly qualified, in Cohn's view, to be a consultant.
McCarthy hoped that he could save himself from accusations
of "anti-Semitism" with Roy Cohn, and if necessary, with
Dave Schine. But the day McCarthy accepted these two Jews as
his assistants was the day his downfall really began.
As the son of a Jewish multi-millionaire, Schine had avoided
the draft for the Korean War by getting himself classified 4-F.
As soon as he became a staff member of McCarthy's committee,
however, at the instigation of left-wing journalist Drew Pearson
(pictured, below left) the Army reclassified Schine 1-A and
drafted him. Thus, the stage was set for Roy Cohn to involve
McCarthy in a dispute with the United States Army.
It is clear that McCarthy was dragged into this dispute against
his will. Army lawyer John Adams relates: “Senator McCarthy
spoke out quite freely about his irritation over Schine. He told
me that the individual is of absolutely no help to the committee,
was interested in nothing but the photographers and getting his
picture in the papers, and that things had reached the point where
he was a complete pest. McCarthy stated to me quite emphatically
that he was anxious to see this individual drafted, and . . .
he hoped . . . we would send him as far away as possible "to
get him out of [his] hair." . . . "Send him wherever you can, as
far away as possible. Korea is too close."
Cohn raised hell with the Army, first threatening revenge for
the drafting of Schine, then agitating for special treatment for
his putative boyfriend. John Adams stated in a January 21, 1954,
meeting in Attorney General Herbert Brownell's office that demands
for the names of Army loyalty-board members usually
were preceded by flare-ups over the reassignment of Schine.
McCarthy was not happy about this behavior, and he privately
complained that Cohn was indeed carrying out a vendetta against
the Army on account of Schine.
McCarthy had instructed Adams on December 17, 1953,
that, having learned the extent of the interference Cohn and
Schine were causing for the commanding general of Fort ix, he
wished the Army to discontinue all special treatment for Schine.
Subsequently, the alleged anti-Communist Jew, columnist George
Sokolsky, contacted Adams repeatedly, continuing to urge special
treatment for Schine. On February 12, 1954, Sokolsky went
so far as to tell Adams that he, Sokolsky, would "get them to
drop all this stuff they are planning for the Army [i.e., McCarthy's
investigation of Communist subversion in the Army]," if a special
assignment were arranged for Schine. It seemed that
Sokolsky was more concerned about the comfort and onvenience
of one fellow Jew than about the national security of the United
States -- or he was deliberately exacerbating the animosity between
the Army and McCarthy.
Meanwhile, in late January 1954 a story in the New York
Post featured Fort Dix recruits complaining that Schine lived
among them like a visiting dignitary -- and Joseph McCarthy
was taking the blame.
Secretary of the Army Robert Stevens said that he was wary
about "discriminating against" Schine, because Schine was a Jew.
Likewise, McCarthy said that he was afraid to fire Cohn, "because
[I] might be accused of being anti-Semitic." Here we have
the Secretary of the Army and the chairman of a Senate committee,
both paralyzed by fear of being called "anti-Semitic," allowing
26-year-old Roy Cohn and the utterly inconsequential G.
David Schine to walk all over them.
It was not only the fact that McCarthy had felt the wrath of
the Jews when he had spoken out against the barbarous treatment
of German prisoners five years earlier that made him wary
of offending them again. His investigations into Communist subversion
were turning up a vastly disproportionate number of Jewish
Communists, and he was afraid that the Jews would believe
he was hunting Jews rather than Communists.
By using the threat of investigation as a weapon to coerce
the Army into giving special treatment to his friend Schine, Cohn
had tainted the legitimacy of McCarthy's patriotic work. Cohn
was creating exactly the impression of reckless disregard for
fairness and propriety that McCarthy had wished to avoid.
McCarthy had apparently hoped that the alleged anti-Communist
Jews with whom he dealt were what they claimed to be.
With their involvement, however, all his efforts met with grief.
If the Senator had taken account of Jewish traits -- especially
their bent for deception, which goes far beyond anything encountered
in the Gentile world -- then perhaps he would have
braved the charges of "anti-Semitism" rather than tolerate Jews
on his staff.
The anti-Communist credentials of Jewish columnist George
Sokolsky, for example, who had recommended Roy Cohn, were
invented rather late in life. In 1917, at the age of 24, Sokolsky
had gone to Russia with a large number of other Jews, filled
with ardor for the prospect of world Communism and hoping to
lend a hand to the Bolsheviks in fastening the Communist yoke
on the Russians. For a while he edited the English-language
Communist newspaper Daily News in Petrograd; then he left for
China to practice his journalistic skills on behalf of the revolutionary
leader Sun Yat-sen, who was working to set up a Communist
government in China and was receiving aid from the
Soviets. In 1931, claiming disillusionment with the methods of
Bolshevism, he returned to the United States, where he used
different methods.
As a right-wing columnist for the Hearst newspapers,
Sokolsky was well-placed to accomplish much for the Jewish
obsession with the New World Order by misdirecting the anti-
Communist movement into blind alleys, false hopes, and confusion
-- and away from the truth. Considering these facts, are we
justified in believing his claim that he had completely changed
his ideals and in the 1950s was fervently against what he had
been fervently for earlier in Russia and china A clue may be
provided by Sokolsky's 1935 book, We Jews, in which he lamented
the fact that Jews are not even more cohesive than they
are. Certainly, no race-conscious Jew could have genuinely supported
McCarthy's efforts to root Communists out of positions
of influence in American life, since he would have understood
that exposing Communism meant exposing Jews.
Similarly, Roy Cohn, who called Sokolsky his "rabbi," was
another member of the far left who claimed a miraculous conversion:
as late as 1949 he was openly calling anti-Communism
a "witch-hunt" and said that Alger Hiss was a victim of a
"right-wing conspiracy." Given the legendary cohesiveness of
the Jewish people and the Jewishness of Communism, one is
justified in viewing these overnight conversions with suspicion.

There is more than Roy Cohn's youthful attachment to leftist
causes to make us suspicious of his motives: his father Albert
Cohn had been the first judge appointed by Franklin Roosevelt
after the latter became governor of New York. Thus, the Cohns
were firmly attached to the very clique that had fostered what
McCarthy called "twenty years of treason."
It looks very much as if McCarthy, who wished so much to
avoid crossing the Jews, allowed himself to be swindled in the
age-old game of Good Jew/Bad Jew.
The man whom Eisenhower had appointed Secretary of the
Army, Robert Stevens, head of the J.P. Stevens textiles business,
was staunchly anti-Communist, having witnessed the pernicious
influence of Communists in exacerbating labor disputes.
Stevens was even distrustful of New Deal supporters. He was
thus appointed not as a member of the New World Order clique
around Ike, but merely as a valuable (if misguided) Republican
booster. Stevens had apparently taken Eisenhower's anti-Communist
campaign rhetoric at face value.
Upon assuming office in February 1953, Stevens requested
a briefing on the Army's Loyalty and Security Program: "The
presentation should set forth what steps are to be taken to prevent
disloyal and subversive persons from infiltrating the Army,
and what steps have been taken to discover and remove such
persons who may have found their way into the Army Establishment."
So concerned was Stevens about combatting subversion
that he asked advice from J. Edgar Hoover, director of the Federal
Bureau of Investigation. Finally, when Stevens heard that
McCarthy was concerned about security risks in the Army, he
rushed a telegram to him, offering his assistance in the investigation.
McCarthy's staff announced on September 10, 1953, that
there was very serious evidence of espionage at Fort Monmouth.
The evidence was an extract of a report from J. Edgar Hoover to
the head of Army Intelligence. The document mentioned 35
Fort Monmouth employees as security risks, most of them Jews
of Russian origin who had been in contact with the atom-bomb
spies, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. Stevens instructed the commanding
general at Fort Monmouth: "Cooperate! See to it that
they interview anyone they wish to."
During the investigation at Fort Monmouth, however, attention
was diverted to nearby Camp Kilmer. This was the case of
the Jewish Communist Irving Peress. Peress, an Army dentist
who was proved to be not only a member but an organizer of
Communist groups, had sworn a false oath upon receiving his
officer's commission. Worse, when the matter was exposed Peress
was promoted and later given an honorable discharge, thus escaping
the jeopardy of a court-martial. The Peress case was a
tremendous embarrassment to the Army, because it showed that
security in the Army was a mere formality which was easily circumvented.
McCarthy's confidential informant on the Peress case was
General Ralph Zwicker. A hearing in New York City was arranged,
and General Zwicker was called to testify as to the identity
of the Pentagon official who had ordered Peress' honorable
discharge. On the very morning of the hearing, however, Zwicker
received an order from John Adams not to reveal the official's
name. McCarthy did all he could to persuade Zwicker to talk in
spite of the order, but he failed.
Thereafter the press made a great fuss over McCarthy's rough
treatment of Zwicker and the "insult to the uniform." It was

alleged that McCarthy had without cause accused Zwicker of
shielding subversives. Secretary Stevens decided not to allow
General Zwicker or other Army officers to testify further. Says
William Ewald, a Department of Defense official at the time: "A
cheer went up: from anti-McCarthyites within the Administration
itself, from editorial writers far and wide, from liberals
coast to coast." Especially noteworthy was a telephone call to
Stevens from Marshall Plan administrator Paul Hoffman in California
-- at whose residence Eisenhower was then vacationing.
This congratulation was inferred to represent the attitude of that
champion McCarthy-hater, President Ike.
Eisenhower's friend Hoffman was married to Anna
Rosenberg, who had been Truman's Jewish Assistant Secretary
of Defense in 1950 and had been diligent in promoting liberal
rograms in the Army and the other armed services. She, more
than anyone else, had forced full racial integration on the services.
Unlike Ike, however, Secretary Stevens was not an implacable
foe of McCarthy and anti-Communism. Although he
thought Roy Cohn was awful, he said he saw McCarthy as a
"reasonable" man. In a conference with the majority members
of McCarthy's subcommittee, an agreement was reached and
Stevens signed a document that stated this accord. The anti-
McCarthy interpretation of this event has been that Secretary
Stevens did not understand what he was doing. More likely,
Stevens did not understand what Eisenhower was doing. Nor
did the American people understand!
Stevens said of the media's explosively hostile reaction to
his reconciliation with McCarthy, "I think I have been absolutely
crucified. . . ." Furthermore, he showed naiveté by saying that
he thought the press had "misunderstood" the agreement.
Eisenhower decided to have Secretary Stevens "admit an administrative
error" and renege on the agreement. A repudiation
of Stevens' agreement with McCarthy was composed, and
Stevens was made to read it publicly. Meanwhile, President
Eisenhower's staff, without Stevens' knowledge, had instructed
Stevens' subordinate John Adams to compile a written record of
Cohn's and Schine's behavior. Adams, a holdover from the
Truman administration, apparently was considered more politically
reliable than the conservative Stevens. On March 8, 1954,
when Secretary Stevens was asked about the record of improper
pressure by Cohn and Schine (which John Adams had leaked to
the press a few days earlier) he said, "I personally think that
anything in that line would prove to be very much exaggerated.
. . . I am the Secretary, and I have had some talks with the committee
and the chairman . . . and by and large as far as the treatment
of me is concerned, I have no personal complaints . . . ."
On March 10, although Stevens had not even been aware
of the Schine chronology two days earlier, he was pressured
into approving a version heavily "revised" by Defense Department
attorney Struve Hensel. It was called the "Stevens-Adams
chronology," although Stevens had only just learned of it. Under
pressure, the Secretary of the Army was now lending his
name to a document that he had said would be "very much exaggerated."
In late April 1954 the Army-McCarthy hearings began. The
Army had accused McCarthy and Roy Cohn of using improper
pressure, evidence of this being the so-called "Stevens-Adams
chronology." McCarthy counter-charged that the Army was trying
to discredit his committee and stop its investigation of the

Army.
During the hearings Stevens was the Army's "star witness."
He "stonewalled" the subcommittee, giving vague, unresponsive,
and often self-contradictory testimony. It became clear to
McCarthy that Stevens was acting under orders from
Eisenhower's staff. The Army's case, however, already had been
blown sky-high, and McCarthy essentially vindicated, when
Senator Everett Dirksen, a member of the McCarthy Subcommittee,
testified that the Army's counsel John Adams and
Eisenhower's administrative assistant Gerald Morgan had approached
him on January 22, 1954, seeking to stifle part of
McCarthy's investigation of the Army. Dirksen testified that
Adams had mentioned the Army's file on Cohn and Schine, dropping
a "hint" That these files might be very damaging if they
were "issued and ventilated on the front pages" of newspapers.
At this point, John Adams, not wishing to be the lone scapegoat
for Eisenhower, and, furthermore, living under the possibility
of a prosecution for perjury, revealed that he had been told
to compile the chronology on Cohn and Schine by members of
Eisenhower's staff in a secret meeting in the Attorney General's
office the day before approaching Dirksen.
The White House was now clearly implicated in a conspiracy
to shield subversion in the government. On May 17 Eisenhower,
in an obvious attempt to prevent his own role from being investigated
further, issued what became known as the "iron curtain"
order. Eisenhower claimed that it was a Constitutional principle
that the President could forbid his subordinates from revealing
any information to the Congress. On May 27, after several
more days of vague, unresponsive, and sometimes conflicting
testimony from Stevens, McCarthy responded in exasperation
to Eisenhower's gag order: "The oath which every person in this
government takes, to protect and defend the country against all
enemies, foreign and domestic, that oath towers far above any
presidential security directive." He urged federal employees to
come forward with any information they might have about corruption
and subversion in government.
The next day Eisenhower had his press secretary convey to
the media a statement that likened McCarthy to Hitler: a comparison
that was not meant to flatter McCarthy. Edward R.
Murrow and other media figures took their cue and began echoing
that line.
McCarthy, however, was expressing essentially the same idea
which Theodore Roosevelt had expressed half a century earlier,
when the latter said: “It is patriotic to support [the President]
insofar as he efficiently serves the country. It is unpatriotic not
to oppose him to the exact extent that by inefficiency or otherwise
he fails in his duty to stand by the country. . In any event,
it is unpatriotic not to tell the truth--whether about the President
or anyone else.
And of course, the truth was exactly what Ike feared.
Was this not the Eisenhower who had carried out Operation
Keelhaul after the Second World War, in which Anti-Communist
Russians, Hungarians, and others were forcibly repatriated
to a certain death under Communism Was this not the
Eisenhower who deliberately starved to death over a million
German prisoners of war And was this not the same Eisenhower
who later sent paratroopers into Little Rock to enforce racial
integration with bayonets
Regardless of the legal result, biased media coverage made
the Army-McCarthy hearings a propaganda victory for the pro-
Communists. Army counsel Joseph Welch (pictured, right),
through hyperbole and histrionics, managed to convince a large
portion of the public that a few peripheral issues he raised during
the hearings were serious embarrassments to McCarthy.
For example, Welch insisted for the television cameras that
part of an FBI report listing subversives at Fort Monmouth was
"a carbon copy of precisely nothing" and "a perfect phoney,"
even though FBI Director Hoover said that he had written it.
Similarly, Welch dramatically accused McCarthy of introducing
a "doctored" photograph into evidence: it was a quite genuine
photograph, which merely had been cropped and enlarged for
the sake of clarity. The media played up Welch's accusations
and ignored McCarthy's explanations.
Welch was much more an actor than a lawyer: later, in 1959,
he starred in a major Hollywood production, Anatomy of a
Murder, alongside Jimmy Stewart and Lee Remick. In any event,
during the Army-McCarthy hearings the Senate hearing room
was his stage, and he played his role to the hilt. When McCarthy
pointed out that a member of Welch's own law firm, Fred Fischer,
had been a member of the National Lawyers' Guild, an organization
cited as a Communist front by the Attorney General, Welch
waxed maudlin and sobbed the famous line, "Have you no
sense of decency at long last" Later, outside the hearing room,
Welch wept again for the benefit of the news photographers.*
As reported by the media, Welch was a man of great humanity
who was shocked that McCarthy would be so ignoble as to
attempt to ruin Fischer's career with his accusation, while
McCarthy was a heel for even raising the matter. The fact that
McCarthy's charge was perfectly accurate seemed to make no
difference at all to the media.
And so it was with other episodes in the hearings. One contemporary
observer, Harold Varney, noted in the American Mercury:
“Unfortunately, the anti-McCarthy press was not honest
enough to admit publicly that the Senator had been vindicated.
The smearers continued to parrot the smears, just as if the disproof
were not before the country.
The masters of the controlled media were determined to "get"
McCarthy, and they did. They had not directed as much hatred
on any public figure since Adolf Hitler.
By September many of his supporters in the Congress, ever
sensitive to the direction of the political wind, had thrown in
the towel. McCarthy's Senate colleagues stripped him of his
committee chair in
November. On December
2, 1954, the
Senate voted 67-22 to
condemn him for
"conduct contrary to
Senatorial traditions."
The condemnation
permanently ended his
effectiveness as a legislator.

homosexuals. According to writer Brian Burns:, The quote,
"Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last Have you left
no sense of decency" was asked of the notorious Senator Joe
McCarthy by Attorney Joseph Welch at the climactic moment
of the Army-McCarthy Hearings, a 55-day spectacle that riveted
the attention of the nation in the spring of 1954. A grandfatherly,
bespectacled man with a fondness for neckties, Walpole's
Welch was the lead counsel for the Army during the hearings,
which aired live on the ABC and DuMont networks.
Welch's memorable excoriation of McCarthy came as the bullet
point of a tearful and impassioned speech in which he blasted
McCarthy for his "cruelty and recklessness." It was a moment
that would forever alter the lives of both men... Welch, an
attorney at the Boston law firm of Hale and Dorr, was hired to
represent the Army.... The penultimate confrontation with the
Wisconsin senator came on June 9, while Welch was needling
Cohn in cross examination about the contention that there were
130 known Communists working in Army labs throughout the
country.
After stewing for a while in the background, McCarthy
finally interjects after Welch playfully asks Cohn why he doesn't
just have the FBI get all of the Communists out of the Army by
sundown. McCarthy tells Welch that one of his co-workers at
Hale and Dorr, "a young man named Fischer," had belonged for
three or four years to the National Lawyers Guild, an organization
that was named "years and years" ago as the legal bulwark
of the Communist party.
Since Welch was so interested in ferreting out Communists,
he should be made aware of the fact that Fischer was a
member of his own firm, McCarthy said. Welch's response was
brutally effective. Welch: 'Until this moment, Senator, I think I
never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness. Fred
Fischer is a young man who went to the Harvard Law School
and came into my firm and is starting what looks to be a brilliant
career with us. When I decided to work for this committee, I
asked Jim St. Clair, who sits on my right, to be my first assistant.
I said to Jim, "Pick somebody in the firm to work under you that
you would like." He chose Fred Fischer, and they came down on
an afternoon plane.
That night, when we had taken a little stab at trying to see
what the case was about, Fred Fisher and Jim St. Clair and
I went to dinner together. I then said to these two young men,
"Boys, I don't know anything about you, except I've always
liked you, but if there's anything funny in the life of either one
of you that would hurt anybody in this case, you speak up quick."
'And Fred Fisher said, "Mr. Welch, when I was in the
law school, and for a period of months after, I belonged to the
Lawyers Guild," as you have suggested, Senator. 'He went on to
say, "I am Secretary of the Young Republican's League in Newton
with the son of [the] Massachusetts governor, and I have
the respect and admiration of my community, and I'm sure I have
the respect and admiration of the twenty-five lawyers or so in
Hale & Dorr."
“And I said, "Fred I just don't think I'm going to ask
you to work on the case. If I do, one of these days that will come
out, and go over national television and it will just hurt like the
dickens." And so, Senator, I asked him to go back to Boston.
Little did I dream you could be so reckless and so cruel as to do
an injury to that lad...It is, I regret to say, equally true that I fear
he shall always bear a scar needlessly inflicted by you. If it
were in my power to forgive you for your reckless cruelty, I
would do so.
'I like to think I'm a gentle man, but your forgiveness
will have to come from someone other than me.'
McCarthy: 'Mr. Chairman, may I say that Mr. Welch talks
about this being cruel and reckless. He was just baiting; he has
been baiting Mr. Cohn here for hours, requesting that Mr. Cohn
before sundown get out of any department of the government
anyone who is serving the Communist cause. Now, I just give
this man's record and I want to say, Mr. Welch, that it had been
labeled long before he became a member, as early as 1944.'
Welch: 'Senator, may we not drop this We know he belonged
to the Lawyers Guild. And Mr. Cohn nods his head at
me. I did you, I think, no personal injury, Mr. Cohn'
Cohn: 'No, sir.'
Welch: 'I meant to do you no personal injury, and if I
did, I beg your pardon. Let us not assassinate this lad further,
Senator. You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency,
sir, at long last Have you left no sense of decency' Welch's
stirring condemnation was the beginning of the end for
McCarthy, who would be censured by the Senate later that year.
Following his censure McCarthy returned home to Wisconsin,
where he died of complications from alcoholism in 1957.
He was only 48.
Welch, on the other hand, found himself a national celebrity.
His exposure of McCarthy's bluster earned him high
praise from the media and various civic organizations and his
stirring speech secured him a permanent place in the annals of
history.
While there is little question of the effectiveness of
Welch's condemnation, recent evidence has suggested that it may
not have been as spontaneous as it seemed to those who watched
it unfold live on the air.
A number of historians now believe that McCarthy may have
blundered his way into a carefully planned trap.
One of the strongest advocates of this theory is Nicholas
von Hoffman, who describes the encounter from Cohn's perspective
in Citizen Cohn (The Life and Times of Roy Cohn.
Doubleday). Von Hoffman writes that despite the animosity between
the two parties, Welch and McCarthy agreed before the
trial that several areas would be off limits.
Welch agreed that he would not mention Cohn's avoidance
of the draft during World War II. In return, McCarthy's
camp agreed that they would not bring up Fischer's membership
in the Lawyer's Guild.
Von Hoffman and several other sources suggest that
the agreement also extended to Cohn's sexual orientation.
Though he denied it to his dying day, Cohn was widely known
as a homosexual, especially to the Washington insiders that
packed the hearing room each day.
According to several sources, it is possible that Welch
had intentionally provoked McCarthy earlier in his cross examination
by showing Cohn a picture that had been doctored by
the McCarthy camp prior to being submitted as evidence. After
Cohn offers no explanation for how the altered picture came to
be, Welch playfully asks him if it might have been created by a
pixie. McCarthy angrily jumps in. McCarthy: 'Will the counsel
for my benefit define -- I think he might be an expert on that
-- what a pixie is'

Several years ago, I had dinner at Galileo, a Washington restaurant,
with Steven Rosen, who was then the director of foreign-policy
issues at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.
The group, which is better known by its acronym, AIPAC,
lobbies for Israel’s financial and physical security. Likemany
lobbyists, Rosen cultivated reporters, hoping to influence their
writing while keeping his name out of print. He is a voluble
man, and liked to demonstrate his erudition and dispense aphorisms.
One that he often repeated could serve as the credo of K
Street, the Rodeo Drive of Washington’s influence industry: “A
lobby is like a night flower: it thrives in the dark and dies in the

The Center for Responsive Politics, a public-policy group, estimates
that between 1990 and 2004 these pacs gave candidates
and parties more than twenty million dollars.
Robert H. Asher, a former AIPAC president, told me that the
pacs are usually given euphemistic names. “I started a pac called
Citizens Concerned for the National Interest,” he said. Asher,
who is from Chicago, is a retired manufacturer of lamps and
shades, and a member of the so-called Gang of Four—former
presidents of AIPAC, who steered the group’s policies for more
than two decades. (The three others are Larry Weinberg, a California
real-estate developer and a former owner of the Portland
Trail Blazers; Edward Levy, a construction-materials executive
from Detroit; and Mayer “Bubba” Mitchell, a retired builder
based in Mobile, Alabama.)
AIPAC, Asher explained, is loyal to its friends and merciless
to its enemies. In 1982, Asher led a campaign to defeat Paul
Findley, a Republican congressman from Springfield, Illinois,
who once referred to himself as “Yasir Arafat’s best friend in
Congress,” and who later compared Arafat to Gandhi and Martin
Luther King, Jr. ”There was a real desire to help Findley out
of Congress,” Asher said. He identified an obscure Democratic
lawyer in Springfield, Richard Durbin, as someone who could
defeat Findley. “We met at my apartment in Chicago, and I recruited
him to run for Congress,” he recalled. “I probed his views
and I explained things that I had learned mostly from AIPAC. I
wanted to make sure we were supporting
someone who was not only against Paul Findley but also a friend
of Israel.”
Asher went on, “He beat Findley with a lot of help from
Jews, in- state and out-of-state. Now, how did the Jewish money
find him I travelled around the country talking about how we
had the opportunity to defeat someone unfriendly to Israel. And
the gates opened.” Durbin, who went on to win a Senate seat, is
now the Democratic whip. He is a fierce critic of Bush’s Iraq
policy but, like AIPAC, generally supports the Administration’s
approach to the Israeli- Palestinian conflict. Durbin says that he
considers Asher to be his “most loyal friend in the Jewish community.”
Mayer Mitchell led a similar campaign, three years ago, to
defeat Earl Hilliard, an Alabama congressman who was a critic
of Israel. Mitchell helped direct support to a young Harvard Law
School graduate named Artur Davis, who challenged Hilliard in
the Democratic primary, and he solicited donations from AIPAC
supporters across America.
Davis won the primary, and the seat. “I asked Bubba how he
felt after Davis won,” Asher said, “and he said, `Just like you
did when Durbin got elected.’ “ Mitchell declined to comment.
AIPAC’S leaders can be immoderately frank about the
group’s influence. At dinner that night with Steven Rosen, I mentioned
a controversy that had enveloped AIPAC in 1992. David
Steiner, a New Jersey real-estate developer who was then serving
as AIPAC’S president, was caught on tape boasting that he
had “cut a deal” with the Administration of George H. W. Bush
to provide more aid to Israel. Steiner also said that he was “negotiating”
with the incoming Clinton Administration over the
appointment of a pro-Israel Secretary of State. “We have a dozen
people in his”—Clinton’s— ”headquarters . . . and they are all
going to get big jobs,” Steiner said. Soon after the tape’s existence
was disclosed, Steiner resigned his post. I asked Rosen if
AIPAC suffered a loss of influence after the Steiner affair. A

half smile appeared on his face, and he pushed a napkin across
the table. “You see this napkin” he said. “In twentyfour
hours, we could have the signatures of seventy senators on
this napkin.”
Rosen was influential from the start. He was originally recruited
for the job by Larry Weinberg, one of the Gang of Four,
and he helped choose the group’s leaders, including the current
executive director, Howard Kohr, a Republican who began his
AIPAC career as Rosen’s deputy. Rosen, who can be argumentative
and impolitic, was never a candidate for the top post. “He’s
a bit of a kochleffl”—the Yiddish term for a pot-stirrer, or meddler—Martin
Indyk, who also served as Rosen’s deputy, and
who went on to become President Clinton’s Ambassador to Israel,
says. Rosen has had an unusually eventful private life, marrying
and divorcing six times (he is living again with his first
wife), and he has a well-developed sense of paranoia. When we
met, he would sometimes lower his voice, even when he was
preparing to deliver an anodyne pronouncement. “Hostile ears
are always listening,” he was fond of saying.
Nevertheless, he is a keen analyst of Middle East politics,
and a savvy bureaucratic infighter. His views on the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict are not notably hawkish; he once called himself
“too right for the left, and too left for the right.” He is a
hard-liner on only one subject—Iran—and this preoccupation
helped shape AIPAC’S position: that Iran poses a greater threat
to Israel than any other nation. In this way, AIPAC is in agreement
with a long line of Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon, who fears Iran’s nuclear intentions more than
he ever feared Saddam Hussein’s. (AIPAC lobbied Congress in
favor of the Iraq war, but Iraq has not been one of its chief concerns.)
Rosen’s main role at AIPAC, he once told me, was to
collect evidence of “Iranian perfidy” and share it with the United
S t a t e s .
Unlike American neoconservatives, who have openly supported
the Likud Party over the more liberal Labor Party, AIPAC
does not generally take sides in Israeli politics. But on Iran
AIPAC’S views resemble those of the neoconservatives. In 1996,
Rosen and other AIPAC staff members helped write, and engineer
the passage of, the Iran and Libya Sanctions Act, which
imposed sanctions on foreign oil companies doing business with
those two countries; AIPAC is determined, above all, to deny
Iran the ability to manufacture nuclear weapons. Iran was a main
focus of this year’s AIPAC policy conference, which was held
in May at the Washington Convention Center. Ariel Sharon and
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, among others, addressed
five thousand AIPAC members. One hall of the convention center
was taken up by a Disney- style walk-through display of an
Iranian nuclear facility. It was kitsch, but not ineffective, and
Rosen undoubtedly would have appreciated it. Rosen, however,
was not there. He was fired earlier this year by Howard Kohr,
nine months after he became implicated in
an F.B.I. espionage investigation. Rosen’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell,
expects him to be indicted on charges of passing secret information
about Iranian intelligence activities in Iraq to an official of
the Israeli Embassy and to a Washington Post reporter. A junior
colleague, Keith Weissman, who served as an Iran analyst for
AIPAC until he, too, was fired, may face similar charges.
The person who, in essence, ended Rosen’s career is a fiftyeight-
year-old Pentagon analyst named Lawrence Anthony
Franklin, who is even more preoccupied with Iran than Steven

Rosen. Franklin, until recently the
Pentagon’s Iran desk officer, was indicted
last month on espionage charges. The Justice
Department has accused him of giving
“national-defense information” to
Rosen and Weissman, and classified information
to an Israeli official. Franklin
has pleaded not guilty; a tentative trial date
is set for September. If convicted, he will
face at least ten years in prison.
I first met Franklin in November of
2002. Paul Wolfowitz, then the Deputy
Secretary of Defense, was receiving the
Henry M. (Scoop) Jackson award from the
Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs,
a conservative-leaning group that
tries to build close relations between the
American and Israeli militaries. In the ballroom
of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel at Pentagon
City, a shopping mall, were a number
of American generals and the Israeli Ambassador
to the United States, Danny
Ayalon.
Franklin, a trim man with blond hair
and a military bearing, is a colonel in the
Air Force Reserve who spent several years
as an analyst at the Defense Intelligence
Agency. He has a doctorate in Asian studies
and describes himself as a capable
speaker of Farsi. In addition, he was a
Catholic in a largely Jewish network of
Pentagon Iran hawks.
Franklin was particularly close to the
neoconservative Harold Rhode, an official
in the Office of Net Assessment, the
Pentagon’s in-house think tank. Franklin
was also close to Michael Ledeen, who,
twenty years ago, played an important role
in the Iran-Contra scandal by helping arrange
meetings between the American
government and the Iranian arms dealer
Manucher Ghorbanifar. Ledeen, now a
resident scholar at the American Enterprise
Institute, is one of the most outspoken
advocates in Washington of confrontation
with the Tehran regime.
The conversation at the banquet, and
just about everywhere else in official
Washington at that time, centered on the
coming war in Iraq. “We may well hope
that with the demise of a truly evil and
despotic regime in Iraq, we will see the
liberation of one of the most talented
peoples in the Arab world,” Wolfowitz
said in his speech. Franklin did not seem
especially concerned with the topic at
hand. As we stood outside the banquet
hall, he said that Iran, not Iraq, would turn
out to be the most difficult challenge in
the war on terror.

Then, as now, the Administration was
divided on the question of Iran. Many of
the political appointees at the Defense
Department hoped that America would
support dissidents in an attempt to overthrow
Iran’s ruling clerics, while the State
Department argued for containment. Even
within the Defense Department, many officials
believed that it would be imprudent
to make regime change in Tehran a top priority.
“There are neocons who thought Iran
should come sooner and neocons who
thought it should come later,” Reuel Marc
Gerecht, of the American Enterprise Institute,
told me. As for Franklin, Gerecht,
a former Iran specialist in the C.I.A.’s Directorate
of Operations, said, “It’s fair to
say that Larry was impatient with Bush
Administration policy on Iran.” In the
Pentagon’s policy office, I learned later,
it was sometimes said that Franklin inhabited
a place called Planet Franklin. Gerecht
referred to him as “sweet, bumbling
Larry.”
A year later, on a reporting assignment
in Israel, I ran into Franklin at the Herzliya
Conference, which is the Davos of the Israeli
security establishment. He said that
he was there on Defense Department business.
We talked briefly about Iraq—it was
eight months after the invasion—and, as
we spoke, General Moshe Ya’alon, then
the Israeli Army chief of staff, swept into
the room surrounded by bodyguards and
uniformed aides. “Wow,” Franklin said.
We stepped outside, and he talked only
about Iran’s threat to America. “Our intelligence
is blind,” he said. “It’s the most
dangerous country in the world to the U.S.,
and we have nothing on the ground. We
don’t understand anything that goes on. I
mean, the C.I.A. doesn’t have anything.
This goes way deeper than Tenet”—
George Tenet, who was the director of central
intelligence at the time. He continued,
“Do you know how dangerous Iran is to
our forces in the Gulf We have great
force-concentration issues now”—the
presence of American troops in Iraq—
”and the Iranians are very interested in
making life difficult for American forces.
They have the capability. You watch what
they’re doing in Iraq. Their infiltration is
everywhere.”
Franklin seemed more frustrated with
American policy in Iran than he had the
year before. “We don’t understand that it’s
doable—regime change is doable,” he
said. “The people are so desperate to become
free, and the mullahs are so unpopular.
They’re so pro-American, the
people.” Referring to the Bush Administration,
he said, “That’s what they
don’t understand,” and he added, “And
they also don’t understand how anti-
American the mullahs are.” Franklin
was convinced that the Iranians would
commit acts of terrorism against Americans,
on American soil. “These guys are
a threat to us in Iraq and even at home,”
he said.
Franklin was not a high-ranking
Pentagon official; he was five steps
removed in the hierarchy from Douglas
Feith, the Under-Secretary for Policy.
For two years, though, he had been trying
to change American policy. His efforts
took many forms, including calls
to reporters, meetings with Rosen and
Weissman and with the political counsellor
at the Israeli Embassy, Naor
Gilon. According to Tracy O’Grady-
Walsh, a Pentagon spokeswoman, he
was not acting on behalf of his superiors:
“If Larry Franklin was formally or
informally lobbying, he was doing it on
his own.”
Franklin also sought information
from Iranian dissidents who might aid
his cause. In December of 2001, he and
Rhode met in Rome with Michael
Ledeen and a group of Iranians, including
Manucher Ghorbanifar. Ledeen,
who helped arrange the meeting, told
me that the dissidents gave Franklin
and Rhode information about Iranian
threats against American soldiers in Afghanistan.
(Rhode did not return calls
seeking comment.) Franklin was initially
skeptical about the meeting,
Ledeen said, but emerged believing that
America could do business with these
dissidents.
Franklin’s meetings with Gilon and
with the two AIPAC men make up the
heart of the indictment against him. The
indictment alleges that Rosen—”CC-
1,” or “Co-Conspirator 1”—called the
Pentagon in early August of 2002, looking
for the name of an Iran specialist.
He made contact with Franklin a short
time later, but, according to the indictment,
they did not meet until February
of 2003. In their meetings, according
to several people with knowledge of the
conversations, Franklin told the lobbyists
that Secretary of State Colin Powell
was resisting attempts by the Pentagon
to formulate a tougher Iran policy. He
apparently hoped to use AIPAC to

lobby the Administration.
The Franklin indictment suggests that
the F.B.I. had been watching Rosen as
well; for instance, it alleges that, in February
of 2003, Rosen, on his way to a
meeting with Franklin, told someone on
the phone that he “was excited to meet
with a `Pentagon guy’ because this person
was a `real insider.’ “ Franklin, Rosen,
and Weissman met openly four times in
2003. At one point, the indictment reads,
somewhat mysteriously, “On or about
March 10, 2003, Franklin, CC-1 and CC-
2”— Rosen and Weissman—”met at
Union Station early in the morning. In the
course of the meeting, the three men
moved from one restaurant to another restaurant
and then finished the meeting in
an empty restaurant.”
On June 26, 2003, at a lunch at the
Tivoli Restaurant, near the Pentagon,
Franklin reportedly told Rosen and
Weissman about a draft of a National Security
Presidential Directive that outlined
a series of tougher steps that the U.S. could
take against the Iranian leadership. The
draft was written by a young Pentagon aide
named Michael Rubin (who is now affiliated
with the American Enterprise Institute).
Franklin did not hand over a copy
of the draft, but he described its contents,
and, according to the indictment, talked
about the “state of internal United States
government deliberations.”
The indictment also alleges that
Franklin gave the two men “highly classified”
information about potential attacks
on American forces in Iraq.
In mid-August of 2002, according to
the indictment, Franklin met with Gilon—
identified simply as “FO,” or “foreign official”—at
a restaurant, and Gilon explained
to Franklin that he was the
“policy” person at the Embassy. The two
met regularly, the indictment alleges, often
at the Pentagon Officers’ Athletic
Club, to discuss “foreign policy issues,”
particularly regarding a “Middle Eastern
country”— Iran, by all accounts—and “its
nuclear program.” The indictment suggests
that Franklin was receiving information
and policy advice from Gilon; after
one meeting, Franklin drafted an “Action
Memo” to his supervisors incorporating
Gilon’s suggestions. Gilon is an expert on
weapons proliferation, according to
Danny Ayalon, the Israeli Ambassador,
and has briefed reporters about Israel’s
position on Iran. According to Lawrence
Di Rita, a Pentagon spokesman, it is part

of the “job description” of Defense Department
desk officers to meet with their
foreign counterparts. “Desk officers meet
with foreign officials all the time, not with
ministers, but interactions with people at
their level,” he said. The indictment contends,
however, that on two occasions
Franklin gave Gilon classified information.
The issue of Israel’s activities in Washington
is unusually sensitive. Twenty years
ago, a civilian Naval Intelligence analyst
named Jonathan Pollard was caught stealing
American secrets on behalf of an Israeli
intelligence cell—a “rogue” cell, the
Israelis later claimed. Pollard said that he
was driven to treason because, as a Jew,
he could not abide what he saw as
America’s unwillingness to share crucial
intelligence with Israel. Pollard’s actions
were an embarrassment for American
Jews, who fear the accusation of “dual
loyalty”—the idea that they split their allegiance
between the United States and
Israel. For Israel, the case was a moral and
political disaster. And there are some in
the American intelligence community who
suspect that Israel has never stopped spying
on the United States.
Earlier this month, Ayalon told me that
Israel does not “collect any intelligence
on the United States, period, full stop. We
won’t do anything to risk this most important
relationship.” In any case, he said,
there was no need to spy, “because
coöperation is so intimate and effective
between Israel and the U.S.” Ayalon also
said that Gilon, who is returning to Jerusalem
later this summer, remains an important
member of his staff; in recent months,
Gilon has attended meetings at the State
Department, the Pentagon, and the White
House.
In June of 2004, F.B.I. agents searched
Franklin’s Pentagon office and his home
in West Virginia, and allegedly found
eighty-three classified documents. Some
had to do with the Iran debate, but some
pertained to Al Qaeda and Iraq. (A separate
federal indictment, citing the documents,
has been handed down in West Virginia.)
According to a person with knowledge
of Franklin’s case, the agents told
Franklin that Rosen and Weissman were
working against America’s interests.
Franklin faced ruin—the documents found
in his house could cost him his job, the
agents said. Franklin, who did not have a
lawyer, agreed to coöperate in the investigation
of Rosen and Weissman, although
apparently he was not given in return a
specific promise of leniency. Soon, he was
wired, and was asked to contact the two
AIPAC employees. On July 21st, Franklin
called Weissman and said that he had to
speak to him immediately—that it was a
matter of life and death. They arranged to
meet outside the Nordstrom’s department
store at Pentagon City.
A month before that meeting, The New
Yorker had published an article by
Seymour Hersh about the activities of Israeli
intelligence agents in northern Iraq.
Franklin, who held a top-secret security
clearance, allegedly told Weissman that he
had new, classified information indicating
that Iranian agents were planning to kidnap
and kill the Israelis referred to by
Hersh. American intelligence knew about
the threat, Franklin said, but Israel might
not. He also said that the Iranians had infiltrated
southern Iraq, and were planning
attacks on American soldiers. Rosen and
Weissman, Franklin hoped, could insure
that senior Administration officials received
this news. It is unclear whether
what Franklin relayed was true or whether
it had been manufactured by the F.B.I. The
Bureau has refused to comment on the
c a s e .
Weissman hurried back to AIPAC’S
headquarters and briefed Rosen and
Howard Kohr, AIPAC’S executive director.
According to AIPAC sources, Rosen
and Weissman asked Kohr to give the information
to Elliott Abrams, the senior
Middle East official on the National Security
Council. Kohr didn’t get in touch
with Abrams, but Rosen and Weissman
made two calls. They called Gilon and told
him about the threat to Israeli agents in
Iraq, and then they called Glenn Kessler,
a diplomatic correspondent at the Washington
Post, and told him about the threat
to Americans.
A month later, on the morning of August
27, 2004, F.B.I. agents visited Rosen
at his home, in Silver Spring, Maryland,
seeking to question him. Rosen quickly
called AIPAC’S lawyers. That night, CBS
News reported that an unnamed Israeli
“mole” had been discovered in the Pentagon,
and that the mole had been passing
documents to two officials of AIPAC, who
were passing the documents on to Israeli
officials.
Within days, the names of Franklin,
Rosen, and Weissman were made public.
The F.B.I. informed Franklin that he was
going to be charged with illegal posses-

sion of classified documents. Franklin was
said by friends to be frightened, and surprised.
He said that he could not afford to
hire a lawyer. The F.B.I. arranged for a
court-appointed attorney to represent him.
The lawyer, a former federal prosecutor,
advised him to plead guilty to espionage
charges, and receive a prison sentence of
six to eight years.
At about this time, Franklin received
a call from Michael Ledeen, his ally in
matters of Iran policy. “I called him and
said, `Larry, what’s going on’ “ Ledeen
recalled. “He said, `Don’t worry.
Sharansky’ “—Natan Sharansky, the
former Soviet dissident—” `survived years
in the Gulag, and I’ll survive prison, too.’
I said, `What are you talking about’ He
told me what was going on. I asked him if
he had a good lawyer.” Ledeen called the
criminal-defense attorney Plato Cacheris.
“I knew him from when he served as
Fawn’s attorney,” Ledeen said, referring
to Fawn Hall, who was Colonel Oliver
North’s secretary at the time of the Iran-
Contra affair. Cacheris has also represented
Monica Lewinsky and the F.B.I.
agent Robert Hanssen, who spied for
Moscow. Cacheris offered to represent
Franklin pro bono, and Franklin accepted
the offer.
AIPAC launched a special appeal for
donations—for the organization, not for
Rosen and Weissman. “Your generosity at
this time will help ensure that false allegations
do not hamper our ability or yours
to work for a strong U.S.-Israel relationship
and a safe and secure Israel,”
AIPAC’S leaders wrote in the letter accompanying
the appeal.
But in December four AIPAC officials,
including Kohr, were subpoenaed to testify
before a grand jury in Alexandria, Virginia.
In March, AIPAC’S principal lawyer,
Nathan Lewin, met with the U.S. Attorney
for the Eastern District of Virginia,
Paul McNulty, who agreed to let Lewin
see some of the evidence of the Pentagon
City sting. According to an AIPAC source,
an eleven-second portion of the telephone
conversation between Rosen, Weissman,
and the Post’s Glenn Kessler, which the
F.B.I. had recorded, was played for Lewin.
In that conversation, Rosen is alleged
to have told Kessler about Iranian agents
in southern Iraq—information that
Weissman had received from Franklin. In
the part of the conversation that Lewin
heard, Rosen jokes about “not getting in
trouble” over the information. He also

notes, “At least we have no Official Secrets
Act”—the British law that makes
journalists liable to prosecution if they
publish classified material.
Prosecutors argued to Lewin that this
statement proved that Rosen and
Weissman were aware that the information
Franklin had given them was classified,
and that Rosen must therefore
have known that he was passing classified
information to Gilon, a foreign official.
Lewin, who declined to comment
on the case, recommended that AIPAC
fire Rosen and Weissman. He also told
the board that McNulty had promised
that AIPAC itself would not be a target
of the espionage investigation. An
AIPAC spokesman, Patrick Dorton, said
of the firing, “Rosen and Weissman were
dismissed because they engaged in conduct
that was not part of their jobs, and
because this conduct did not comport
with the standards that AIPAC expects
and requires of its employees.”
When I asked Abbe Lowell, Rosen’s
lawyer, about the firings, he said, “Steve
Rosen’s dealings with Larry Franklin
were akin to his dealings with executivebranch
officials for more than two decades
and were well known, encouraged,
and appreciated by AIPAC.”
Last month, I met with Lowell and
Rosen in Lowell’s office, which these
days is a center of Washington scandal
management. (He also represents the
fallen lobbyist Jack Abramoff.) Lowell
had instructed Rosen not to discuss specifics
of the case, but Rosen expressed
disbelief that his career had been ended
by an F.B.I. investigation. “I’m being
looked at for things I’ve done for twentythree
years, which other foreign-policy
groups, hundreds of foreign-policy
groups, are doing,” Rosen said, and went
on, “Our job at AIPAC was to understand
what the government is doing, in order
to help form better policies, in the interests
of the U.S. I’ve never done anything
illegal or harmful to the U.S. I never even
dreamed of doing anything harmful to
the U.S.”
Later, he said, “We did not knowingly
receive classified information from
Larry Franklin.” Lowell added, “When
the facts are known, this will be a case
not about Rosen and Weissman’s actions
but about the government’s actions.”
Lowell said that he would not rehearse
his arguments against any charges until
there is an indictment.
Rosen said that he was particularly
upset by the allegation that, because he
had informed Gilon that Israeli lives might
be in danger, he was a spy for Israel. “If I
had been given information that British or
Australian soldiers were going to be kidnapped
or killed in Iraq, I think I would
have done the same thing,” he said. “I’d
have tried to warn them by calling friends
at those embassies.” He wants to believe
that he could return to AIPAC if he is exonerated,
but this does not seem likely.
AIPAC leaders are downplaying Rosen’s
importance to the organization. “AIPAC
is focussed primarily on legislative lobbying,”
Dorton told me. Rosen’s severance
pay will end in September, although
AIPAC, in accordance with its bylaws,
w i l l
continue to pay legal fees for Rosen and
Weissman.
Rosen’s defenders are critical of
AIPAC for its handling of the controversy.
Martin Indyk, who is now the director of
the Saban Center for Middle East Policy,
a think tank within the Brookings Institution,
thinks that AIPAC made a tactical
mistake by cutting off the two men. “It
appears they’ve abandoned their own on
the battlefield,” he says. “Because they cut
Steve off, they leave him no choice.” Indyk
wouldn’t elaborate, but the implication
was clear: Rosen and Weissman will defend
themselves by arguing that they were
working in concert with the highest officials
of the organization, including Kohr.
Until there is an indictment, the
government’s full case against Rosen and
Weissman cannot be known; no one in the
Justice Department will comment. The
laws concerning the dissemination of government
secrets are sometimes ambiguous
and often unenforced, and prosecutors in
such cases face complex choices. According
to Lee Strickland, a former chief privacy
officer of the C.I.A., prosecutors
pressing espionage charges against Rosen
and Weissman would have to prove that
the information the two men gave to Gilon
not merely was classified but rose to the
level of “national-defense information,”
meaning that it could cause dire harm to
the United States. Yet a reporter who
called the Embassy to discuss the same information
in the course of preparing a
story—thus violating the same statute—
would almost certainly not be prosecuted.
Strickland continued, “Twice in the
Clinton Administration we had proposals
to broaden the statutes to include the re-

cipients, not just the leakers, of classified
information. The New York Times and the
Washington Post went bat-shit about this
legislation. They saw it as an attempt to
shut down leaks.” If American law did
punish those who receive, and then pass
on, or publish, privileged information,
much of the Washington press corps
would be in jail, according to Lee Levine,
a First Amendment lawyer. So would a
great many government officials, elected
and appointed, for whom classified information
is the currency of conversation
with reporters and lobbyists.
Strickland, who said that he had spent
much of his career at the C.I.A. “shutting
down” leaks, called the AIPAC affair “uncharted
territory.” It is uncommon, he said,
for an espionage case to be built on the
oral transmission of national-defense information.
He also said, “Intent is always
an element. If I were a defense attorney, I
would argue that this was a form of entrapment.
The F.B.I. agents deliberately set
my client up, put him in a moral quandary.”
He added, however, that although a jury
might recognize the quandary, the law does
not. “Just because you have information
that would help a foreign country doesn’t
make it your job to pass that information.”
Even some of AIPAC’S most vigorous
critics do not see the Rosen affair as a traditional
espionage case. James Bamford,
who is the author of well-received books
about the National Security Agency, and
an often vocal critic of Israel and the pro-
Israel lobby, sees the case as a cautionary
tale about one lobbying group’s disproportionate
influence: “What Pollard did was
espionage. This is a much different and
more unique animal—this is the selling of
ideology, trying to sell a viewpoint.” He
continued, “Larry Franklin is not going to
knock on George Bush’s door, but he can
get AIPAC, which is a pressure group, and
the Israeli government, which is an enormous
pressure group, to try to get the
American government to change its policy
to a more aggressive policy.” Bamford,
who believes that Weissman and Rosen
may indeed be guilty of soliciting information
and passing it to a foreign government,
sees the case as a kind of brushback
pitch, a way of limiting AIPAC’S long—
and, in Bamford’s view, dangerous—
reach.
Other AIPAC critics see the lobby’s behavior
as business as usual in Washington.

EZRA POUND by Eustace Mullins
Foreword
In 1949, while I was visiting Ezra Pound
who was a political prisoner at St. Elizabeth's
Hospital, Washington, D.C. (a Federal institution
for the insane), Dr. Pound asked
me if I had ever heard of the Federal Reserve
System. I replied that I had not, as of
the age of 25. He then showed me a ten dollar
bill marked "Federal Reserve Note" and
asked me if I would do some research at the
Library of Congress on the Federal Reserve
System which had issued this bill. Pound
was unable to go to the Library himself, as
he was being held without trial as a political
prisoner by the United States government.
After he was denied broadcasting time
in the U.S., Dr. Pound broadcast from Italy
in an effort to persuade people of the United
States not to enter World War II. Franklin
D. Roosevelt had personally ordered Pound's
indictment, spurred by the demands of his
three personal assistants, Harry Dexter
White, Lauchlin Currie, and Alger Hiss, all
of whom were subsequently identified as
being connected with Communist espionage.
I had no interest in money or banking as
a subject, because I was working on a novel.
Pound offered to supplement my income by
ten dollars a week for a few weeks. My initial
research revealed evidence of an international
banking group, which had secretly
planned the writing of the Federal Reserve
Act and Congress' enactment of the plan into
law. These findings confirmed what Pound
had long suspected. He said, "You must
work on it as a detective story."
I was fortunate in having my research at
the Library of Congress directed by a prominent
scholar, George Stimpson, founder of
the National Press Club, who was described
by The New York Times of September 28,
1952: "Beloved by Washington newspapermen
as `our walking Library of Congress',
Mr. Stimpson was a highly regarded reference
source in the Capitol. Government officials,
Congressmen and reporters went to
him for information on any subject."
I did research four hours each day at
the Library of Congress, and went to St.
Elizabeth's Hospital in the afternoon. Pound
and I went over the previous day's notes. I
then had dinner with George Stimpson at
Scholl's Cafeteria while he went over my
material, and I then went back to my room
to type up the corrected notes. Both
Stimpson and Pound made many suggestions
in guiding me in a field in which I had
no previous experience.
When Pound's resources ran low, I applied
to the Guggenheim Foundation, Huntington
Hartford Foundation, and other foundations
to complete my research on the Federal Reserve.
Even though my foundation applications
were sponsored by the three leading
poets of America, Ezra Pound, E.E.
Cummings, and Elizabeth Bishop, all of the
foundations refused to sponsor this research.
I then wrote up my findings to date, and in
1950 began efforts to market this manuscript
in New York.
Eighteen publishers
turned it down without comment, but
the nineteenth, Devin Garrity, president of
Devin Adair Publishing Company, gave me
some friendly advice in his office.
"I like your book, but we can't print it,"
he told me. "Neither can anybody else in
New York. Why don't you bring in a prospectus
for your novel, and I think we can
give you an advance. You may as well forget
about getting the Federal Reserve book
published. I doubt if it could ever be printed."
This was devastating news, coming after
two years of intensive work. I reported
back to Pound, and we tried to find a publisher
in other parts of the country.
After two years of fruitless submissions, the
book was published in a small edition in

1952 by two of Pound's disciples, John
Kasper and David Horton, using their private
funds, under the title Mullins on the
Federal Reserve. In 1954, a second edition,
with unauthorized alterations, was published
in New Jersey, as The Federal Reserve Conspiracy.
In 1955, Guido Roeder brought out
a German edition in Oberammergau, Germany.
The book was seized and the entire
edition of 10,000 copies burned by government
agents led by Dr. Otto John.
The burning of the book was upheld
April 21, 1961 by judge Israel Katz of the
Bavarian Supreme Court.
The U.S. Government refused to intervene,
because U.S. High Commissioner to
Germany, James B. Conant (president of
Harvard University 1933 to 1953), had approved
the initial book burning order.
This is the only book, which has been
burned in Germany since World War II. In
1968 a pirated edition of this book appeared
in California.
Both the FBI and the U.S. Postal inspectors
refused to act, despite numerous complaints
from me during the next decade. In
1980 a new German edition appeared. Because
the U.S. Government apparently no
longer dictated the internal affairs of Germany,
the identical book, which had been
burned in 1955 now circulates in Germany
without interference.
I had collaborated on several books with
Mr. H.L. Hunt and he suggested that I should
continue my long-delayed research on the
Federal Reserve and bring out a more definitive
version of this book.
I had just signed a contract to write the
authorized biography of Ezra Pound, and the
Federal Reserve book had to be postponed.
Mr. Hunt passed away before I could get
back to my research, and once again I faced
the problem of financing research for the
book.
My original book had traced and named
the shadowy figures in the United States who
planned the Federal Reserve Act.
I now discovered that the men whom I
exposed in 1952 as the shadowy figures behind
the operation of the Federal Reserve
System were themselves shadows, the
American fronts for the unknown figures
who became known as the "London Connection."
I found that notwithstanding our
successes in the Wars of Independence of
1812 against England, we remained an economic
and financial colony of Great Britain.
For the first time, we located the original
stockholders of the Federal Reserve
Banks and traced their parent companies to
the London Connection.

This research is substantiated by citations
and documentation from hundreds of newspapers,
periodicals and books and charts
showing blood, marriage, and business relationships.
More than a thousand issues of
The New York Times on microfilm have
been checked not only for original information,
but verification of statements from other
sources.
It is a truism of the writing profession
that a writer has only one book within him.
This seems applicable in my case, because I
am now in the fifth decade of continuous
writing on a single subject, the inside story
of the Federal Reserve System. This book
was from its inception commissioned and
guided by Ezra Pound. Four of his protégés
have previously been awarded the Nobel
Prize for Literature, William Butler Yeats for
his later poetry, James Joyce for "Ulysses",
Ernest Hemingway for "The Sun Also
Rises", and T.S. Elliot for "The Waste Land".
Pound played a major role in the inspiration
and in the editing of these works--
which leads us to believe that this present
work, also inspired by Pound, represents an
ongoing literary tradition.
Although this book in its inception was
expected to be a tortuous work on economic
and monetary techniques, it soon developed
into a story of such universal and dramatic
appeal that from the outset, Ezra Pound
urged me to write it as a detective story, a
genre, which was invented by my fellow
Virginian, Edgar Allan Poe. I believe that
the continuous circulation of this book during
the past forty years has not only exonerated
Ezra Pound for his much condemned
political and monetary statements, but also
that it has been, and will continue to be, the
ultimate weapon against the powerful conspirators
who compelled him to serve thirteen
and a half years without trial, as a political
prisoner held in an insane asylum a la
KGB.
His earliest vindication came when the
government agents who represented the conspirators
refused to allow him to testify in
his own defense; the second vindication
came in 1958 when these same agents
dropped all charges against him, and he
walked out of St. Elizabeth's Hospital, a free
man once more.
His third and final vindication is this
work, which documents every aspect of his
exposure of the ruthless international financiers
to whom Ezra Pound became but one
more victim, doomed to serve years as the
Man in the Iron Mask, because he had dared
to alert his fellow-Americans to their furtive
acts of treason against all people of the
United States.
In my lectures throughout this nation,
and in my appearances on many radio and
television programs, I have sounded the
toxin that the Federal Reserve System is not
Federal; it has no reserves; and it is not a
system at all, but rather, a criminal syndicate.
From November 1910, when the conspirators
met on Jekyll Island, Georgia, to
the present time, the machinations of the
Federal Reserve bankers have been
shrouded in secrecy. Today, that secrecy has
cost the American people a three trillion
dollar debt, with annual interest payments
to these bankers amounting to some three
hundred billion dollars per year, sums which
stagger the imagination, and which in themselves
are ultimately unpayable.
Officials of the Federal Reserve System routinely
issue remonstrances to the public,
much as the Hindu fakir pipes an insistent
tune to the dazed cobra, which sways its
head before him, not to resolve the situation,
but to prevent it from striking him. Such
was the soothing letter written by Donald J.
Winn, Assistant to the Board of Governors
in response to an inquiry by a Congressman,
the Honorable Norman D. Shumway, on
March 10, 1983. Mr. Winn states
that "The Federal Reserve System was established
by an act of Congress in 1913 and
is not a `private corporation'." On the next
page, Mr. Winn continues, "The stock of the
Federal Reserve Banks is held entirely by
commercial banks that are members of the
Federal Reserve System."
He offers no explanation as to why the
government has never owned a single share
of stock in any Federal Reserve Bank, or
why the Federal Reserve System is not a
"private corporation" when all of its stock
is owned by "private corporations".
American history in the twentieth century
has recorded the amazing achievements
of the Federal Reserve bankers.
First, the outbreak of World War I, which
was made possible by the funds available
from the new central bank of the United
States.
Second, the Agricultural Depression of
1920.
Third, the Black Friday Crash on Wall
Street of October, 1929 and the ensuing
Great Depression.
Fourth, World War II. Fifth, the conversion
of the assets of the United States and
its citizens from real property to paper assets
from 1945 to the present, transforming
a victorious America and foremost world
power in 1945 to the world's largest debtor
nation in 1990.
Today, this nation lies in economic ru-

ins, devastated and destitute, in much the
same dire straits in which Germany and Japan
found themselves in 1945.
Will Americans act to rebuild our nation,
as Germany and Japan have done when they
faced the identical conditions which we now
face--or will we continue to be enslaved by
the Babylonian debt money system which
was set up by the Federal Reserve Act in
1913 to complete our total destruction
This is the only question, which we have
to answer, and we do not have much time
left to answer it.
Because of the depth and the importance
of the information, which I had developed
at the Library of Congress under the tutelage
of Ezra Pound, this work became the
happy hunting ground for many other wouldbe
historians, who were unable to research
this material for themselves.
Over the past four decades, I have become
accustomed to seeing this material appear
in many other books, invariably attributed
to other writers, with my name never
mentioned.
To add insult to injury, not only my material,
but even my title has been appropriated,
in a massive, if obtuse, work called "Secrets
of the Temple--the Federal Reserve".
This heavily advertised book received reviews
ranging from incredulous to hilarious.
Forbes Magazine advised its readers to read
their review and save their money, pointing
out that "a reader will discover no secrets"
and that "This is one of those books whose
fanfares far exceed their merit."
This was not accidental, as this overblown
whitewash of the Federal Reserve
bankers was published by the most famous
nonbook publisher in the world.
After my initial shock at discovering that
the most influential literary personality of
the twentieth century, Ezra Pound, was imprisoned
in "the Hellhole" in Washington, I
immediately wrote for assistance to a Wall
Street financier at whose estate I had frequently
been a guest. I reminded him that as
a patron of the arts, he could not afford to
allow Pound to remain in such inhuman captivity.
His reply shocked me even more. He
wrote back that "your friend can well stay
where he is." It was some years before I was
able to understand that, for this investment
banker and his colleagues, Ezra Pound
would always be "the enemy".

Ezra Pound was born in Hailey, Idaho,
in 1885. He completed two years of
college at the University of Pennsylvania
and earned a degree from Hamilton
College in 1905. After teaching at
Wabash College for two years, he
travelled abroad to Spain, Italy and
London, where, as the literary executor
of the scholar Ernest Fenellosa, he
became interested in Japanese and
Chinese poetry. He married Dorothy
Shakespear in 1914 and became London
editor of the Little Review in 1917. In
1924, he moved to Italy; during this
period of voluntary exile, Pound
became involved in Fascist politics, and
did not return to the United States until
1945, when he was arrested on charges
of treason for broadcasting Fascist
propaganda by radio to the United
States during the Second World War. In
1946, he was acquitted, but declared
mentally ill and committed to St.
Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, D.C.
During his confinement, the jury of the
Bollingen-Library of Congress Award
(which included a number of the most
eminent writers of the time) decided to
overlook Pound's political career in the
interest of recognizing his poetic
achievements, and awarded him the
prize for the Pisan Cantos (1948). After
continuous appeals
from writers won
his release from
the hospital in
1958, Pound
returned to Italy
and settled in
Venice, where
he died, a semirecluse,
in
1972.

known because he’s one who has always

as a vice president of the megaconsultancy
Booz, Allen, & Hamilton (one
that also works closely with DARPA).
Rabbi Zakheim is also Chief Executive
Officer of SPC International Corporation
(a subsidiary of the aforementioned
remote-flight-control-technology firm), a
company that specializes in “political,
military, and economic consulting, and international
sales and analysis”.
In addition, Dr. Zakheim serves as
Consultant to the Secretary of Defense and
the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy.
As the Rabbi’s record clearly shows,
he has serious tenure in the US defense
establishment: more than 30 years of holding
assorted senior positions at the Pentagon.]
[2] Dov Zakheim is the co-author of
that singularly sinister—and chillingly
ominous—statement contained in Rearming
America’s Defenses (RAD) re the plan
for American global domination [through
galvanizing American emotional support
for full-scale war against oil-rich Arab
states]: “...the process of transformation,
even if it brings revolutionary change, is
likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic
and catalyzing event—like a new
Pearl Harbor”.
The PNAC document also expressly
recommends the US should seize Iraq
even if Saddam Hussein were deposed
through a military coup. [So much for
bringing “freedom and democracy” to the
people of that country.]
The good Rabbi’s involvement with
PNAC, his previous directorship of a corporation
that manufactures remote control
flight systems, and his inability to document
how the Pentagon has spent TRIL-
LIONS of American taxpayers’ dollars
suggests that real investigations into the
crimes of 9/11 and the US invasion of Afghanistan
and Iraq would put Mr. Zakheim
near the top of the witness list for interrogation
and potential prosecution.
SYSTEMS PLANNING CORPORATION
Dr. Dov Zakheim was the former CEO
of Systems Planning Corporation, a company
that designs and manufactures extremely
sophisticated control/guidance
technology that enables an external operator
to fly, and land, aircraft by remote control.
One of the company’s principal prod-

ucts is the Command Transmitter System
(CTS), a fully redundant, self-contained,
solid-state platform capable of providing
totally programmable remote flight control
capability, including high-precision
electronic navigation.
The company’s parallel product, the
Flight Termination System (FTS), enables
system-equipped aircraft to be safely
landed on any suitable runway in the
world—regardless of the availability of
ground-based navigational or landing aids
(VOR, ILS, MLS, etc.).
Such total independence in all flight
regimes is achieved through a variety of
ultra-sophisticated space-based technologies,
including Mil-spec DGPS (Differential
GPS, using extremely precise encrypted
military “P” Code transmissions),
and is accurate to within one foot of the
runway centerline during landing.
The CTS/FTS remote-control system
is capable of controlling up to 8 airborne
vehicles—including airliners—simultaneously
from ground-based or airborne
(AWACS) positions.
[“Coincidence”: Operation Vigilant
Guardian, one of five NORAD “war game
exercises” underway on the morning of
9/11 and orchestrated by Dick Cheney, involved
the simulated hijacking of commercial
airliners.
At one point during the exercises,
while the four “real” hijacked aircraft were
airborne, as many as TWENTY-TWO
independent radar blips representing “hijacked”
aircraft were simultaneously displayed
on FAA radar screens along the
Eastern seaboard.
This, obviously, created total pandemonium.
Air traffic controllers who had
been advised beforehand by NORAD of
the “simulated hijackings”, began frantically
calling NORAD to determine which
of the twenty-two targets were “real” and
which were “exercise.” All indications are
that whatever it was that happened to the
four real “hijacked” airliners occurred during
this purposefully orchestrated melee
while the order was given for the US Air
Force to “stand down”.]
The CTS/FTS system (subsequently
improved, tested and implemented by
Raytheon) allows specialist ground controllers
to listen-in on cockpit conversations
on the target aircraft, then take absolute
control of its computerized flight
control system by remote means and safely
land the aircraft at any airport within
range.
In other words, this technology was designed
to empower “law enforcement
agencies” to hijack hijackers.

for CTS/FTS was developed by Raytheon
under an Air Force contract for the Joint
Precision Approach and Landings System
(JPALS) program. A government-industry
team accomplished the first precision approach/auto-land
by a civil aircraft using
this system on August 25, 2001 at
Holloman AFB, NM. A FedEx Express
727-200 aircraft demonstrated hundred
percent system proficiency by executing
six full auto-lands using the JPALS ground
station.]
“HOME RUN”
In partnership with Raytheon, System
Planning Corporation also supplies CTS/
FTS technology to commercial airplane
manufacturers for installation in airliners
(Boeing: confirmed; Airbus: undetermined,
but highly probable given the
consortium’s connection to BAE, a US
military contractor.)
It has been reported that DARPA’s
codename for the CTS/FTS system was
“Home Run”. Former German Secretary
of Defense Andreas Von Buelow may have
alluded to foreknowledge of Home Run
technology in an interview he gave the
German daily “Tagesspiegel” on January
13th, 2002:
“There is also the theory of one British
flight engineer: according to this, the
steering of the planes was perhaps taken
out of the pilots’ hands, from outside. The
Americans had developed a method in the
1970s, whereby they could rescue hijacked
planes by intervening into the computer
piloting [automatic pilot system].
This theory says this technique was abused
in this case [9/11]...”
Upon deeper scrutiny this may not appear
quite so much a “theory” as might
first seem. It’s been reported that the German
national carrier Lufthansa, seriously
concerned that one of its own aircraft
might be “rescued” by the Americans without
its authority, had every one of its Home
Run-equipped Boeing aircraft stripped of
the American flight control computers. It’s
reasonable to presume that Herr Von
Buelow—the Secretary of Defense and
Minister of Science and Technology at the
time—would have known all about this
mammoth but secretive task (how very
clever—and discreet—of Von Buelow to
“drop” the information into the middle of
an interview about the 9/11 attacks).
Lufthansa aircraft (and possibly others)
are now effectively impervious to Home
Run take-overs, but that is more than can
be said for the American aircraft fleet.
In order to make Home Run truly effective,
it had to be completely integrated
with all onboard systems, and this could
only be accomplished with a new aircraft
design, several of which were on the drawing
boards at that time. Under cover of extreme
secrecy, the multinationals and
DARPA went ahead on this basis and built
“back doors” into the new computerized
flight control systems.
There were two very obvious hard requirements
at this stage: 1) a primary control
channel for use in taking over the
flight control system and flying the aircraft
back to an airfield of choice, and 2)
a covert audio channel for monitoring
flight deck conversations. Once the primary
channel was activated, all aircraft
functions came under direct ground (or
AWACS) control, permanently removing
the hijackers and pilots from the control
loop.
It needs mention that this was not a
system designed to “undermine” the authority
of the flight crews, but rather,
implemented as a “doomsday” device in
the event the hijackers began to shoot passengers
or crew members, possibly including
the pilots. Based on the reasonable
assumption that hijackers only carry a limited
number of rounds of ammunition, and
many modern airliners carry in excess of
300 passengers, Home Run was envisaged
as a system that could be used to fly all
the survivors to a friendly airport for a safe
landing.
System Activation
Activating the primary Home Run
channel is reportedly fairly straightforward.
A transponder, as many readers
know, is a combined radio transmitter and
receiver which operates automatically—
in the case of 9/11, relaying data between
the four aircraft and air traffic controllers
on the ground. The transmitted signals represent
a unique “identity” for each aircraft,
essential in crowded airspace to avoid
midair collisions—and equally essential
for Home Run controllers trying to lock
onto the correct aircraft.
Once the correct target aircraft is located
by radar, the Home Run duplex data
bus “piggy backs” the transponder channel
and assumes direct control from the
ground. This could explain why NONE
of the four aircraft sent the special “I have
been hijacked” transponder code (7500),
despite multiple activation points for this
distress transmission on all four aircraft—
and despite being flown by combat-hardened
ex-fighter pilots.
Because the transponder frequency
had already been piggy-backed by Home
Run, transmission of the special hijack
code was rendered impossible. This was

the first hard proof that the target aircraft
had been hijacked electronically from the
ground, rather than by Arab patsies toting
box-cutters.
The Home Run listening device on the
flight deck utilizes the cockpit microphones
that normally feed the Cockpit
Voice Recorder (CVR), one of two black
boxes armored to withstand heavy impact
and thereby later provide investigators significant
clues to why the aircraft crashed.
However, once plugged into Home Run,
the CVRs are bypassed, and voice transmissions
are no longer recorded on the 30
minute continuous-loop recording tape.
If Home Run is active for more than
thirty minutes, there will therefore be no
audible data on the Cockpit Voice Recorders.
Crash investigators are said to have
recovered the CVRs from the Pentagon
and Pittsburg aircraft, and publicly confirmed
that both are completely blank. The
only possible reason for this is data capture
by Home Run, providing the final
hard proof that the attack aircraft were
hijacked electronically from the ground,
rather than by “Arab terrorists”.
Discussion
It is not being suggested that remote
circumvention and take-over of the four
airliners’ controls is definitely what happened
on 9/11. But if this scenario seems
improbable, one must necessarily consider
the probability of four airliners being taken
over simultaneously, casually flown
around a large swath of the country for
almost two hours under the vigilant eye
of NORAD, and then used as missiles—
all without a single fighter being
scrambled to intercept any of them.
Since this is what actually happened,
we have no choice but to consider other
“implausible” scenarios. And since the
official scenario is itself an unsubstantiated—and
truly farfetched—”conspiracy
theory,” other competing scenarios should
also receive serious attention.
The public’s reluctance to question
official doctrine on this matter is a symptom
of the societal role for which most of
us have been bred and trained: to be everfaithful
hounds, tails thumping the floor
as we contentedly slurp the hand of class
authority. Such credulity also becomes
inevitable when the alternative is so unbearable:
if someone in Bush’s position
is capable of lying to us about something
as huge, as gut-wrenchingly horrible as 9/
11, then everything we believe about this
country—about the nature of civilization
itself—might just be childish nonsense.

to go there. Given a desperate enough need
to sustain the childish belief in government-as-benevolent-father,
a person will
adapt that belief to any circumstance. The
behavioral end result can resemble courage;
indeed, we are taught to regard it as
the DEFINITION of courage. Actually,
it’s one of cowardice’s darkest moments.
Even a casual examination of Nazi Germany,
where this phenomenon was rampant,
will drive this point home.
It’s almost funny, the way people
readily see the threat of technological circumvention
presented by Diebold’s electronic
voting machines, yet when the subject
switches to Systems Planning
Corporation’s Flight Termination System,
which is every bit as real, and to the exactly
parallel possibilities it represents visa-vis
9/11, they suddenly retreat into profound
and combative denial. It’s as if a
threshold has been crossed into a realm
of possibilities too vile to entertain, so they
simply don’t. Never mind that this
country’s operatives have been traveling
the world, perpetrating similar horrors, for
all of the past century.
Rather than acknowledge the possibility
of a unifying pattern, Joe Sixpack
would much rather ‘shoot the messenger.’
Every so often,
such people establish
a new highwater
mark for
cowardice and
facultative stupidity,
and the present
is definitely one of
those times. After
all, the official 9/
11 scenario they
cling to with such
desperate faith
comes from only
one source: the
Western “intelligence
community”—the
most
brazen, systematic,
resourceful,
and interlocked
association of habitual
liars this
world has ever
seen.
As should
have been made
clear by any number
of intelligence
scandals over the
years, the credibility
of this bunch
goes past zero into the negative: pending
airtight proof, anything they say should be
reflexively deemed a lie. You may remember
that the FBI also provided the identities
of “the 19 hijackers” within hours—
information that soon also became quite
suspect, especially considering there was
NOT ONE Arab name on any of the flight
manifests (miraculously, they even found
paper passports that had survived fireballs,
Arabic flight manuals conveniently left in
the trunks of cars, etc., etc.)
At least seven of the hijackers are still
alive in the Middle East—a pretty good
alibi, wouldn’t you say Several of these
ex-suspects had their passports or other
IDs stolen from them over the years, and
it’s entirely possible that all 19 hijackers
had stolen identities, meaning they could
have come from anywhere—or been absent
altogether. Our media were pretty
slack about acknowledging this at the time,
and since then have dropped this ball entirely.
What’s really amazing is that not
one mainstream journalist has asked how
these 19 alleged hijackers boarded their
aircraft when their names were not on any
of the passenger manifests.

Zakheim was Deputy Under Secretary of

COMMAND TRANSMITTER
SYSTEM (CTS)
The CTS at the Sea Range provides
safe, controlled testing of unmanned targets,
platforms and missiles, including
ballistic missiles and other long-range vehicles.
The CTS is a tunable UHF FM transmitter
designed for ground use in controlling
guided missiles, pilotless aircraft and
pilotless boats. It delivers a nominal 750
watts of RF power to the antenna (rated at
1 kW with a minimum of 500 watts). The
RF signal is frequency modulated by selected
tones (IRIG 20 tone format) that
correspond to particular control functions
of the missile, aircraft or boat. Four of
these systems are located at Laguna Peak
and three are located on SNI. The fourth
system at SNI is expected to be operational
in fiscal year 1997.
Control of target vehicles allows a
specific test or threat geometry to be produced
for weapons systems tests or Fleet
training. The CTS may be controlled at the
site or remotely from the OCRs at Point
Mugu. This allows an operator to control
a pilotless aircraft or drone throughout the
Sea Range or control boats and ship targets
within about 40 miles of the active
transmitter site. Area of coverage is shown
in Figure 7-5. The CTS is used for control
of airborne targets such as VANDAL,
AQM-37C and aerial tows, and seaborne
targets such as the SEPTAR and Mobile
Ship Target (MST). The BQM-74E is
sometimes flown using the CTS when
shortages of DKW-3 equipment occur.
In addition to the fixed site capability,
the Test Wing’s NP-3D aircraft can be
configured to provide airborne CTS functions
as an over-the-horizon repeater or
“stand-alone” transmitter.” .

Sharon, the Prime Minister of Israel, run
a covert program with operatives in highlevel
US government positions to influence
the Bush Administration’s decision
to go to war in Iraq The FBI wants to
know.
That’s the story behind the latest Washington
spy scandal, involving Israel, the
American Israel Public Affairs Committee
(AIPAC) and a mid-level civilian Pentagon
employee allegedly caught redhanded
trying to deliver US secrets to the
Israelis.
It’s not a routine spy case. According
to sources familiar with the investigation,
the FBI is looking at a group of
neoconservatives who have occupied senior
posts at the White House, the Pentagon
and in Vice President Cheney’s office.
It’s not that they are supporters of
Israel—no crime there—but that some of
them might be conspirators in a clandestine
operation launched by Sharon’s Likud
Party. They make up the very network of
ideologues—from civilians at the Defense
Department to fellow travelers at rightwing
think tanks—who have been accused
of pushing George W. Bush into war. The
point of the probe, sources believe, is not
to examine the push to war but rather to
ascertain whether Sharon recruited or
helped place in office people who knowingly,
and secretly, worked with him to affect
the direction of US policy in the
Middle East. The most likely targets of the
inquiry are Douglas Feith, Under Secretary
of Defense for Policy, and Harold
Rhode of the Pentagon’s Office of Net
Assessment.
It’s an explosive inquiry and one that
raises the most sensitive hackles, since it
involves the possibility that US officials
(most, but not all, Jews) are working on
Sharon’s behalf. They include Feith and a
handful of other officials, including those
in the inner circle of his policy office who
formed the core of the Office of Special
Plans (OSP). The probe faces stiff political
resistance. Yet it may have legs.
The investigation burst into the news
in late August when CBS News reported
that the FBI had caught a Feith staffer,
later identified as Larry Franklin, trying
to deliver what turned out to be a classified
draft of a presidential memo on Iran
to AIPAC and an Israeli Embassy diplomat.
Subsequent attention focused largely
on whether Franklin was a spy for Israel,
but in fact he is only a minor figure in a
far more sweeping probe that began two
years ago.
What triggered the original investigation
isn’t known, but it is known that it
began at a critical moment, as Feith and
Rhode began assembling a team, which
included Franklin, to form the OSP. It’s
been widely reported that the OSP manufactured
exaggerated intelligence reports
on the threat from Iraq, but less reported
is the fact that the OSP also carried out
unauthorized operations. Several OSP officials—including
Rhode, Franklin and
Michael Maloof, one of the two original
staffers of the forerunner to OSP, joined
by Michael Ledeen of the American Enterprise
Institute (AEI)—took part in a
rogue Pentagon initiative, beginning in
2001 with unsavory wheeler-dealers in
Rome and Paris, to discuss regime change
beyond Iraq, in Iran and Syria. The CIA
found out about the Rome meeting, and
the agency may have asked the FBI to start
watching Feith, Rhode, Ledeen, Franklin
et al. Former CIA and Defense intelligence
officials familiar with the case stress that
the FBI is looking at an operation run by
the Israeli prime minister, not by the
Mossad, Israel’s intelligence agency, and
that the investigation is based solely on
concerns about foreign influence. “It’s
about Sharon,” says a former senior CIA
operations officer. “This has nothing to do
with anti-Semitism.”
Some familiar with the case suggest
that the FBI’s investigation is looking back
as far as 1996, when Feith, Richard Perle,
Feith’s boss at the Pentagon in the 1980s
and until recently chairman of the
Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board, and
David Wurmser, a co-founder of OSP who
is now Cheney’s Middle East adviser,
wrote a radical memo, called “A Clean
Break,” to incoming Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu calling for confrontation
with Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and
the PLO.
Since the investigation came to light,
Sharon’s closest allies have led an effort
to derail it. Screaming the loudest is Marc
Zell, Feith’s former law partner, who is
now an attorney in Israel tied to the
Likud’s right wing and to the settler movement.
“It’s a cheap shot by certain people
inside the government to embarrass Doug
and the Pentagon leadership,” Zell told the
Philadelphia Inquirer. “Certain elements
inside the military and intelligence communities
are unhappy with the policy decisions
of people in the upper echelon and
attempt, sometimes in a very crude way,
to embarrass them.” News of the investigation
stunned AIPAC, the Jewish Institute
for National Security Affairs, AEI and
others in Likud’s Washington circuit. And,
of course, AIPAC’s friends in Congress
are hopping mad. Ha’aretz, the Israeli
daily, said that news of the inquiry landed
like the “diplomatic equivalent of an
unexploded cluster bomb.”
Perle is demanding that the White
House clamp down on the investigators,
according to the Boston Globe. “It’s pretty
nasty, and unfortunately the Administration
doesn’t seem to have it under control,”
the Globe quotes Perle as saying. But
according to the Financial Times, the
White House is quietly doing just that: The
London daily reports that the White House
is pressuring the FBI and the Justice Department
not to issue indictments in the
case.
Other voices are also being heard.
Democratic Representative John Conyers
wrote to the chairman of the House Judiciary
Committee demanding an investigation
into “substantial and credible evidence
that Pentagon officials...have engaged
in unauthorized covert activities.”
Conyers specifically cited Feith. And the
Senate Select Committee on Intelligence
is now deep into phase two of its own
probe, which includes examining the work
of the OSP; its report is expected after the
November election.
The FBI has an ace in the hole that may
allow it to resist White House pressure.
“By now,” says a retired intelligence official,
“the FBI has gathered up so much
material in grand jury records and things
like that that they are in a position to push
back against pressure from the Administration
to back away from this. When they
get pressure, they leak to somebody. And
the potential of disclosure is a real threat
to the Administration.” In addition, the
counterintelligence probe could spin off
investigations in several possibly related
scandals, including the Ahmad Chalabi
case and the Valerie Plame leak, not to
mention the Franklin matter.
“They have no case,” says AEI’s
Michael Ledeen. We’ll see.
