1. Getting Started<br />

1.1 Installing the Battery<br />

Your device is powered by 2 AAA batteries (alkaline<br />

batteries recommended). Rechargeable batteries<br />

(NiMH) can also be used.<br />

1. Turn the unit off and turn it over.<br />

2. Open the battery cover on the back of the unit by<br />

pushing in the direction of the arrow.<br />

3. Install the batteries following the +/- markings in<br />

the battery compartment.<br />

Important: Be sure that the batteries are installed<br />

correctly. Wrong polarity may damage the unit.<br />

4. Replace the battery cover.<br />

Note: Replace the batteries when you see an alert on<br />

the screen.<br />

Warning! If the batteries wear out completely, or if<br />

you take more than a few seconds while changing<br />

the batteries, any user entered information may be<br />

erased. You should always keep written copies of your<br />

important information.<br />

1. Getting Started


1.1 Installing the Battery<br />

Battery Precautions<br />

• Caution: Risk of explosion if battery is replaced by an<br />

incorrect type.<br />

• Dispose of used batteries according to the<br />

instructions.<br />

• Non-rechargeable batteries are not to be recharged.<br />

Never recharge batteries that come with the device.<br />

• Rechargeable batteries are to be removed from the<br />

device before being charged.<br />

• Rechargeable batteries are only to be charged under<br />

adult supervision.<br />

• Do not mix alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc), or<br />

rechargeable (nickle-cadmium) batteries.<br />

• Different types of batteries or new and used<br />

batteries are not to be mixed.<br />

• The supply terminals are not to be short-circuited.<br />

• Do not expose batteries to direct heat or try to take<br />

batteries apart. Follow the battery manufacturer’s<br />

instructions for battery use.<br />

• Always remove a weak or dead battery from the<br />

device.<br />

• To avoid damage caused by leakage of the battery<br />

fluid, replace the battery or batteries once every two<br />

years regardless of how much the device has been<br />

used during that time.<br />

• Should a battery leak, the device may become<br />

damaged. Clean the battery compartment<br />

immediately, avoiding contact with your skin.<br />

• Keep batteries out of reach of small children. If<br />

swallowed, consult a physician immediately.<br />

Press to switch the device on or off.<br />

1.3 Selecting the Battery Type<br />

and Message <strong>Language</strong><br />

The first time you use this device (or following a product<br />

reset), you will be promoted to select the battery type<br />

you are using and to set the message language used for<br />

on-screen prompts and menu items.<br />

1. Press / (direction keys) to select the battery<br />

type (alkaline or rechargeable) you are using and<br />

then press OK .<br />

2. Press / to select the language you want and<br />

then press OK .<br />

• You can change the message language at any time in<br />

the Settings menu. See 7.4 Message <strong>Language</strong>.<br />

1.4 Using the Main Menu<br />

Press menu to access the main menu at any screens to<br />

quickly take you to different books and exercises in your<br />

device. The main menu contains five tabs: Learn, Tools,<br />

Books, Settings and Games. Press F1 to F5 to select<br />

a tab. Press / to select an option you want in the<br />

selected tab and then press OK .<br />

In an enlarged diagram, press the direction keys, if<br />

necessary, to move around.<br />

3.7 Conversational Phrases<br />

Use the phrasebooks to look up translations of useful<br />

phrases in either <strong>English</strong> or <strong>Spanish</strong>.<br />

1. Press / to select <strong>English</strong> or <strong>Spanish</strong><br />

Conversational Phrases in the Books menu and<br />

then press OK .<br />

2. The phrases are grouped into categories. Press<br />

/ (or page up / page down ) to select a category<br />

and then press OK .<br />

• Repeat the step above if there are sub-categories.<br />

• Press F4 ( ) to select <strong>English</strong> or <strong>Spanish</strong> as the<br />

display language.<br />

3. In the selected category, press / to select a<br />

phrase and then press OK .<br />

• Press to hear the source phrase pronounced.<br />

Press FN + to hear the translated phrase<br />

pronounced.<br />

4. Press F5 ( ) to return to the list of phrases.<br />

Keyword Searching<br />

Type a keyword in the search filed for searching phrases<br />

with the specific word. When multiple search results are<br />

available, press / to select the one you want and<br />

then press OK .<br />

3.8 Looking Up Conjugations<br />

Use this feature to look up inflections or conjugations<br />

that show changes in a word’s gender, tense, number,<br />

person and other subtle variations. If you are looking up<br />

the conjugations from the dictionaries by pressing<br />

F2 (CONJ), see step 3 below.<br />

1. Press / to select <strong>English</strong> or <strong>Spanish</strong><br />

Conjugations in the Books menu and then press<br />

OK .<br />

2. Type a word.<br />

3.9 Inflected Form Searching<br />

The device is equipped with a smart system to retrieve<br />

results from an inflected word. For example, when you<br />

type “ate”, the device will retrieve results from the word<br />

“eat”.<br />

3.10 Misspelling Words<br />

If the letters you type do not find a match in the list,<br />

your word is misspelled or not in the dictionaries. A list<br />

of possible spelling corrections is displayed. Press /<br />

to select the entry you want and then press OK .<br />

3.11 Uncertain Spellings<br />

If you are uncertain about how to spell a word, type the<br />

portion of the word you do know, and type a question<br />

mark (?) in place of each unknown letter. Type an<br />

asterisk (*) to stand for any missing portion of a word,<br />

including prefixes, suffixes, spaces, symbols, or any<br />

number of letters. Note: If you type an asterisk at the<br />

beginning of a word, it may take a little while to find the<br />

matching words.<br />

3.12 Confusable Words<br />

Confusables are homonyms, homophones and spelling<br />

variants that are easy to confuse. When the word you<br />

looked up has confusables, the function label CONF<br />

appears. Press F3 (CONF) to view the confusables.<br />

3.13 Usage Examples<br />

Many entries in the dictionaries contain also usage<br />

examples. When usage examples are available, the soft<br />

key F4 (EXAMPLE) appears. Press this soft key to view<br />

the examples. If there are multiple examples available<br />

in an entry, press / to select the example you want<br />

and then press OK .<br />

Another way to look up words in the dictionaries is by<br />

highlighting them in an entry. Note: this feature may<br />

not be available on all screens.<br />

FN + until the accent you want appears (e.g., é).<br />

5. GAMES Menu<br />

5.1 About SpellEvent<br />

The SpellEvent game challenges your ability to spell<br />

words in <strong>English</strong> with the following game modes:<br />

• Competition enables you to compete against up to<br />

five other players. There must be at least two players<br />

and a maximum of six players, including yourself.<br />

Each player can select an avatar and a name. If you<br />

choose, you can play against the computer and<br />

select the level of experience for the computer to<br />

match your own. You can also select the level of<br />

difficulty for the game and the number of rounds to<br />

play.<br />

• Game Show enables you to play SpellEvent alone.<br />

You can choose an avatar, a name, and a skill level.<br />

Then you can play a series of ten rounds consisting<br />

of ten words each.<br />

• Practice enables you to choose an avatar, a name,<br />

and a skill level to practice your spelling skills. You<br />

will be given a total of 15 practice words that you<br />

have to spell three times each correctly.<br />

• Each word has a unique point amount. Additional<br />

point can be awarded based on how quickly you<br />

spell each word;<br />

10 regular rounds, followed by a speed round after<br />

each regular round for earning bonus points. You<br />

have to spell 10 words in each round;<br />

• You proceed to the next round when you spelled<br />

correctly all the words in the current round and<br />

have not used up the “corrections” (wrong answers<br />

• You have two minutes to spell as many words as<br />

possible (maximum 10 words). Five seconds will be<br />

deducted for a wrong answer.<br />

• For a correct answer, the score will show before<br />

proceeding to the next word. For a wrong answer,<br />

you will see the correct spelling.<br />

10. You see the total score of the current round when<br />

the Speed Round is over. Press F4 CONTINUE to<br />

continue the game.<br />

• You can also press F3 VIEW to review all the game<br />

words, F1 ADD ERR to add all wrong answers to My<br />

Word List, or F2 ADD ALL to add all words to My<br />

Word List.<br />

11. The final score of the current round (Regular and<br />

Speed) will show. Press OK to continue to the<br />

5.5 Hangman<br />

Hangman selects a mystery word and challenges you to<br />

guess it letter by letter. You have to guess the word in<br />

order to save the little man. Each wrong guess that you<br />

make causes another piece of him to appear. When he is<br />

whole, you lose.<br />

1. In the Games menu, press / to select<br />

Hangman and then press OK .<br />

2. In the main menu, press / to select ‘New<br />

Game’ and then press OK .<br />

3. Type letters that you think are in the mystery<br />

The headphone jack is located on the top of the device<br />

Caution: Monophonic headphones will not work with<br />

The USB port is located at the bottom of the device for a<br />

mini-USB 1.1 compatible connection. See 9.1 Connecting<br />

8.3 Adjusting Sound Volume<br />

Press to show the volume control menu. Press /<br />

to adjust the volume.<br />

8.4 Changing Size of Screen<br />

You can view a help message at any screen by pressing<br />

8.6 Resetting Your Device<br />

If the keyboard fails to respond, or if the screen<br />

performs erratically, use a paper clip to gently press the<br />

reset button located on your unit to reset your device.<br />

Warning! Pressing the reset button with more than<br />

light pressure may permanently disable your unit.<br />

In addition, resetting the unit erases settings and<br />

information you may have entered.<br />

9.1 Connecting to a PC<br />

Your device has a built-in USB port and can be<br />

connected to your desktop or laptop PC with a USB<br />

cable.<br />

1. Turn on your device.<br />

2. Connect the wide end of a USB cable to a USB<br />

port on your PC and the smaller end to the USB<br />

port on your device.<br />

3. Go to the Setting menu of the device and switch<br />

on the PC Connect setting.<br />

• See 7.6 PC Connect.<br />

• You see a new “Removable Disk” available for<br />

selection on the screen of your PC when the device is<br />

properly connected to your PC.<br />

9.2 Copying Files to Your Device<br />

You can transfer data to the device from your PC or save<br />

copies of your data to another location on your PC to<br />

backup important information.<br />

1. Make sure your device is connected to your PC.<br />

2. On your PC, use Windows Explorer to find the<br />

drive labeled ‘Removable Disk’ or ‘<strong>Franklin</strong>’ and<br />

double-click it to open it.<br />

3. Right-click the file you want to copy from your PC<br />

to your device and then click ‘Copy’ from the popup<br />

menu.<br />

4. Right-click in the window of the Removable Disk<br />

and then click “Paste” from the pop-up menu.<br />

• If your file is .txt formatted personal dictionary, paste<br />

the file in the “PerDict” folder of the Removable Disk.<br />

5. Repeat steps 3-4 to copy additional files to your<br />

device.<br />

6. Close the open folders.<br />

7. Unplug the USB cable from your PC and the<br />

device.<br />

9.3 About Your Device Folders<br />

When you connect your device to your PC, you can see<br />

an assortment of folders for storing various types of<br />

data. Remember, ‘PerDict’ is always the location to save<br />

any .txt formatted personal dictionaries so they appear<br />

on your device. Any other available folders will contain<br />

the saved materials from other features.<br />

9.4 Backing Up Your Data<br />

Because you have access to the folders in which any<br />

information you enter is saved, you can backup this<br />

important information on your PC. While your device<br />

is connected to your PC, right-click any or all of those<br />

folders and then click ‘Copy’. Find a location on your<br />

PC where you want to save this information, rightclick<br />

in that window and then click ‘Paste’ to save the<br />

information.<br />

9.5 Restoring Your Data<br />

If you accidentally erase or lose information, you can<br />

restore any important information you have previously<br />

saved to your PC. Connect your device to your PC. Next,<br />

find the location on your PC where you saved a backup<br />

copy of your information. Right-click on those files or<br />

folders and click ‘Copy’. Click the window containing<br />

your device’s folders, right-click and then click ‘Paste’<br />

from the pop-up menu. You can then re-access your<br />

previously saved information.<br />
