Today’s data centers need <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be flexible in order <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> meet the increasing demands from existing cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mers as well as<br />

new project requests. Ideally, these demands are met quickly with minimal overhead while providing a relatively high<br />

level of isolati<strong>on</strong> from other workloads. For most data centers, the best soluti<strong>on</strong> is <strong>on</strong>e that better utilizes current<br />

capacity <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> satisfy these new demands and provides existing cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mers with the capacity they expect. The ideal<br />

Specifically in the area of dynamic optimizati<strong>on</strong>, Hewlett-Packard has created the <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g> Matrix Operating Envir<strong>on</strong>ment,<br />

an integrated server virtualizati<strong>on</strong> soluti<strong>on</strong> suite for <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Integrity</strong> and ProLiant servers providing a flexible computing<br />

envir<strong>on</strong>ment <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> maximize the usage of server resources. The Matrix Operating Envir<strong>on</strong>ment encompasses a number of<br />

fully integrated, complementary comp<strong>on</strong>ents that enhance the functi<strong>on</strong>ality and flexibility of servers including<br />

workload management, software availability, virtualizati<strong>on</strong> and utility pricing.<br />

can be used <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>gether for even greater combined functi<strong>on</strong>ality.<br />

This paper introduces <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Virtual</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Partiti<strong>on</strong>s</str<strong>on</strong>g> Versi<strong>on</strong> 6 (vPars <str<strong>on</strong>g>v6</str<strong>on</strong>g>)—soft partiti<strong>on</strong>s that are a part of the<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Virtual</str<strong>on</strong>g>izati<strong>on</strong> C<strong>on</strong>tinuum for <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g>. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Virtual</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Partiti<strong>on</strong>s</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>v6</str<strong>on</strong>g> provides granularity down <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the processor core level and<br />

features shared I/O. Each vPar runs its own separately licensed versi<strong>on</strong> of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g> 11i v3 Operating Envir<strong>on</strong>ment.<br />

This approach is useful when individual applicati<strong>on</strong>s need fewer resources than the overall server or hard partiti<strong>on</strong>,<br />

thus applicati<strong>on</strong>s experience isolati<strong>on</strong> from <strong>on</strong>e another yielding increased reliability, applicati<strong>on</strong> specific tuning and<br />

specific software versi<strong>on</strong> compatibility, if needed.<br />

Core-level granularity and dedicated resources are well established as an integral part of <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g> missi<strong>on</strong>-critical<br />

cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mer deployments. <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g> vPars <str<strong>on</strong>g>v6</str<strong>on</strong>g> builds <strong>on</strong> these core strengths and introduces features making managing and<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g> vPars <str<strong>on</strong>g>v6</str<strong>on</strong>g> is a software partiti<strong>on</strong>ing soluti<strong>on</strong> enabling multiple instances of <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> run simultaneously <strong>on</strong> a<br />

single <strong>Integrity</strong> server or hard partiti<strong>on</strong>. Each virtual partiti<strong>on</strong> (vPar) is assigned a subset of hardware and runs a<br />

separate instance of <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g>, and hosts its own set of applicati<strong>on</strong>s. <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g> instances are isolated from each other at<br />

Operating System (OS) and applicati<strong>on</strong> levels. This <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>tal isolati<strong>on</strong> allows for different software patch levels in each<br />

vPar. <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g> vPars <str<strong>on</strong>g>v6</str<strong>on</strong>g> brings vPars functi<strong>on</strong>ality <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the entire <strong>Integrity</strong> server <strong>blades</strong> family.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g> vPars <str<strong>on</strong>g>v6</str<strong>on</strong>g> provides a manageability framework that is shared as a comm<strong>on</strong> resource for all the vPars <str<strong>on</strong>g>v6</str<strong>on</strong>g> running<br />

<strong>on</strong> that server or hard partiti<strong>on</strong> in a dedicated <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g> instance known as the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Virtual</str<strong>on</strong>g>izati<strong>on</strong> Services Platform (VSP).<br />

The VSP is used <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> manage (create, modify, remove, start, s<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>p…) vPars from either a command line interface (CLI)<br />

or a graphical user interface (GUI). The <strong>Integrity</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Virtual</str<strong>on</strong>g> Server Manager (VSMGR) GUI is accessible from the System<br />

Management Homepage (SMH) of the VSP.<br />

Figure 2 shows a high-level view of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g> vPars <str<strong>on</strong>g>v6</str<strong>on</strong>g> architecture and how the VSP fits in.<br />

Most data centers have server hardware that is underutilized. These same data centers are facing increasing demand<br />

for new applicati<strong>on</strong>s that results in an increased demand for servers <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> satisfy their cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mers. These seemingly<br />

use of the resources they have already deployed. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g> virtualizati<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tinuum offers several virtualizati<strong>on</strong> and<br />

CPU and memory<br />

In <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g> vPars <str<strong>on</strong>g>v6</str<strong>on</strong>g>, the VSP utilizes locality informati<strong>on</strong> from the server <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> au<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>matically assign the best available<br />

physical CPU cores and memory <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> a virtual partiti<strong>on</strong>. The CPU cores and memory assigned <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> a virtual partiti<strong>on</strong> are<br />

dedicated <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> that partiti<strong>on</strong>, and not sharable. The direct access and locality-aware assignment ensure that maximum<br />

performance is maintained for applicati<strong>on</strong>s running in that vPar.<br />

A single virtual partiti<strong>on</strong> can be as large as the entire server (cores, memory, and I/O) minus the resources reserved<br />

for the VSP. The smallest virtual partiti<strong>on</strong> that can be created would be a partiti<strong>on</strong> that has a single physical processor<br />

core and the minimal amount of memory required <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> bring up <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

I/O<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g> vPars <str<strong>on</strong>g>v6</str<strong>on</strong>g> provides an efficient, shared I/O infrastructure that allows the bandwidth of Host Based<br />

Adap<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs (HBAs) and Network Interfaces Cards (NICs) <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be shared am<strong>on</strong>g a set of vPars. This increases the<br />

utilizati<strong>on</strong> and flexibility of the HBA or NIC, preserves performance, and solves the I/O slot limitati<strong>on</strong> issues<br />

prevalent in earlier versi<strong>on</strong>s of <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g> vPars. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Virtual</str<strong>on</strong>g> partiti<strong>on</strong>s are assigned virtual NICs that c<strong>on</strong>nect <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> a physical<br />

NIC (or an aggregati<strong>on</strong> of physical NICs) through a virtual switch.<br />

In <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g> vPars <str<strong>on</strong>g>v6</str<strong>on</strong>g>, the granularity of I/O assignment is flexible and allows multiple vPars <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> share the bandwidth of a<br />

Each virtual partiti<strong>on</strong> provides an <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g> standard Integrated Lights-out (iLO) with its own unique IP address that can be<br />

securely accessed from the VSP or over the Internet <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>trol all operati<strong>on</strong>s of the vPar, including the access <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> a fully<br />

featured Extensible Firmware Infrastructure (EFI) shell. Specific vPars administra<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs or group of users can be defined<br />

and dedicated <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> manage a single or a group of virtual partiti<strong>on</strong>s. This feature guarantees the isolati<strong>on</strong> between vPars<br />

from a management prospective.<br />

Managing <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g> vPars <str<strong>on</strong>g>v6</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

The definiti<strong>on</strong>s of the vPars characteristics are s<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>red in the VSP, and changes <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the vPars c<strong>on</strong>figurati<strong>on</strong> are made<br />

using a special set of commands that can be issued <strong>on</strong>ly from the VSP or from the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Virtual</str<strong>on</strong>g>izati<strong>on</strong> Server Manager<br />

running in the System Management Homepage of the VSP. Registered vPar administra<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs can take c<strong>on</strong>trol of virtual<br />

partiti<strong>on</strong>s from the VSP or over the internet, increasing security and isolati<strong>on</strong> between vPars.<br />

While earlier versi<strong>on</strong>s of <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g> vPars provided limited management capabilities in a graphical user interface, <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

vPars <str<strong>on</strong>g>v6</str<strong>on</strong>g> features the <strong>Integrity</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Virtual</str<strong>on</strong>g> Server Manager (VSMGR), a graphical user interface part of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ols of the<br />

SMH of the VSP. The VSMGR reports general informati<strong>on</strong> about the VSP and allows the creati<strong>on</strong>, the removal and the<br />

modificati<strong>on</strong> of the resources assigned <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> virtual partiti<strong>on</strong>s. In additi<strong>on</strong>, it has the ability <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> create, remove and modify<br />

virtual switches and virtual iLO Remote C<strong>on</strong>soles.<br />

Software licensing<br />

The vPar license is included in the <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>UX</str<strong>on</strong>g> 11i v3 VSE-OE and DC-OE operating envir<strong>on</strong>ment bundles. Cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mers who<br />

have purchased these OE bundles and maintained them under <str<strong>on</strong>g>HP</str<strong>on</strong>g> support c<strong>on</strong>tract are granted the right <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> download<br />

and install the new vPars <str<strong>on</strong>g>v6</str<strong>on</strong>g> software as part of their right-<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>-new-versi<strong>on</strong> feature of their support c<strong>on</strong>tract.<br />
