PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Hello CGA,
It looks like the rains may have stopped for a while, so
I hope everyone can get there horse friends out for a
little bit of riding.
Well I’m going to remind all districts again that you
need to have your districts contracts turned into state
office. We still have some districts out there that have not turned in there district
contracts. Districts also need to turn in there show schedules. When riders go
online to check your show schedule and see nothing scheduled they make plans
to go to other districts and may not check your schedule again which means you
have lost rides for your district. The show schedule also affects the insurance for
CGA and makes it hard to estimate future insurance costs. Please get those
contracts and show dates into state office. Remember these are requirements to be
a CGA district.
If you or someone you know has not claimed there year end state award you need
to contact state office. You only have until March 1st to claim your awards.
The next Board of Directors meeting is March 12, in Fresno, all board of directors
need to be in attendance along with all district delegates.
Ride hard and be safe, and remember to wear those helmets.
"The Judge’s Corner" has appeared in this paper with a varying degree of regularity
since 1991. CGA Judges, Members and Work Crew are invited to submit difficult calls
or unusual questions that occur so that others can learn from their experiences. The
best ones (unusual or just plain odd) will be printed here.
If you have input for this column, please send your question to the CGA State Office.
Your question will be answered by a Master Judge and the Rules Chairman. If there
is any disagreement, it will be submitted to the Rules Committee and MAC for final
resolution.
Q: Can a known, “coach” or “trainer” other than the parent, enter the arena on foot
with the rider and horse (who are in an advanced class “AA” and higher) and assist
the rider and horse over the start line by leading the horse by the reins past the start
line.( The horse actively refuses to cross the start line. The rider usually cannot
make the horse cross the start line without assistance from the person on the
ground.) Can the same, “coach” “trainer” remain standing in the arena and loudly,
“coach” the rider through the event The “coach/”trainer” remains at the start line
and is standing near the center of the arena. There are other horses and riders in the
arena at the time.
A: There are multiple thing going on it this question so let’s break them down
1. The Assistant (be it a coach, trainer, parent or other person) can walk the
horse/mounted rider through the gate into the arena and across the 80’ foul
line. RB 4.3
2. The Assistant cannot lead the horse across the timing/starting line in any
class other than Leadline. RB 2.3
3. After the Assistant releases the horse it must be brought under control prior
to the judge signaling for the approval to begin the course. RB 4.3
4. There are no State rules as to where a coach can stand and coach from. The
judge in the arena may tell the coach to move if they feel it is necessary for
their safety.
5. The Judge should not coach the rider.
6. Other horse/riders are allowed in the arena if it meets the criteria in RB 8.1e
see below
8.1 e. The minimum size of the arena in order to be able to run all 13 CGA events is
120' wide by 250' long. In this case, no more than one rider shall be in the arena at
one time.
Note: More than one rider may be in the arena at one time if the arena is at least 120'
x 270'. In this case, the beginning of the 80' foul line should start from a point at least
20' from the entrance gate and all riders in the arena who are not currently participating
in the event shall remain mounted and keep their mounts in the 20' area behind
the back portion of the foul line. Any rider desiring to be the sole rider in the arena
during the running of the event must be afforded the opportunity.
LATE NIGHT RIDERS
By Charlie Moore
Hello from District 1. I would like to take a moment to thank Sheri Herchkorn who
been writing the newsletter article for the past few years. She has done a great job
and I hope I can fill her shoes! Wish me luck!
As we approach the end of January I hope you have all recovered from the busy
Holiday Season and are healthy and ready to ride. Due to the rain, we had to cancel
our show for January 8th and 9 th . We need the rain, but it would be nice if it
stopped so we could still have our shows and ride our horses!
So since I have no show results, I can catch up on things about our exciting 2011
season.
We have our Shamrock Pot of Gold Show scheduled for March 5th and 6th. The
two day highpoint show will have $100.00 cash for highpoint, $50.00 cash to
reserve highpoint and $30.00 cash to 3rd place in each of our 6 divisions!! That is
over $1000 in CASH going back to our riders!
All of us at district 1 are already working on our big Aloha Show that is planned for
June 18th and 19th. If you have never attended this show, you are really missing
out. This show has wonderful highpoints a barbecue and dancing on Saturday
night. The Odom’s ground is FAST, FAST, FAST too. We will be sending out entry
forms and have one in the newspaper in April so be watching for them, you don’t
want to miss this show.
If any of you are interested in helping sponsor these awards or getting sponsors,
please contact me. We have the sponsor letters available and will be advertising
our sponsors in our articles and out at the arena. Sponsors can also place banners
at the arena.
If you haven’t done so, check out our District 1 web site at Batbgymkhana.com.
Web master Danna has done a nice job on the site and is still doing improvements.
But the schedule of shows and events is up along with photos. You can check the
site for show cancellations in case of rain. Also become a fan of Bay Area Time
Busters on Facebook for up to the minute updates.
Sign up forms for district year end awards are also available at the shows. The
awards are really nice and we hope to have a lot of you sign up and be presented
them at an awards banquet after the show season is over. I think year end awards
are not only something to work towards, but are a nice present for yourself to
acknowledge all you and your horse’s hard work through the year. For the 2010-
2011 show season the level 1 prize is a custom Wade saddle pad, level 2 is a “bling”
hair on hide breast collar and level 3 is an embroidered vest. We are hoping to have
samples of these great awards so everyone can see the quality and work towards
earning one.
Hope to see you all soon, and until next time, be safe and wear those helmets!
This has been one of the wettest winters in northern California in many, many years.
Our Halloween show and our Turkey Trot and our Christmas shows were all rained
or mudded out. That hasn’t happened in a long time. So I have absolutely nothing
to write about until our first show on March 5th.
We are hoping for a dry Februrary in order to get the arena dry enough to ride in
early March. We will just have to wait and see what happens.
In the meantime, polish your gear and get ready for another great season of riding in
CGA.
We are not running any Sunday “day” shows this year but are going to try out
Friday night/Saturday night shows and see if that attracts more riders. The combination
of running late on Saturday night and then having to get up so early on
Sunday to run a day show was burning out our helpers and workers. The Friday
night followed by Saturday night should be a little easier on everyone plus we will
all have Sunday to get ready for “work” the next day. Of course those of you that
work “swing shift” might have a problem with new times. So it’s: Friday night
shows - Sign up at 6 p.m. ride at 7 p.m. and Saturday night shows - Sign up at 5:30p..
ride at 6:30 p.m. All other Day shows remain Sign up at 8 a.m. Ride at 9:15 a.m. We
are hoping to avoid the heat of the late afternoon by starting at 5:30 instead of
4:00p.m.
The other big news is District 5 will be having an overnight campout at Stewart’s
Horse Ranch in Point Reyes on April 30 - May 1, 2011. Everyone is invited to join
us. You don’t need to be a CGA or District 5 member. So mark you calendar and
plan on a fun couple of days riding in beautiful Pt. Reyes. Check
www.latenightriders.org website for details.
The club also is planning a Poker Ride and we will bring back the very popular Tack
Sale/Swap for our September 9 & 10 shows with the addition of Crafts. There is no
charge and everyone is welcome to participate. Stay tuned for the Poker Ride date
as the club hasn’t yet decided when that will happen.
"LUCKY SEVEN" CLEMENTS AREA
By Diane Williamson
www.webwat.com/cga7
Welcome winter!
As you know our November shows were cancelled due to too much rain! We are
definitely having a wet winter. I hope all of you are having a chance to ride
between storms.
If any of you have been able to make it over to District 27 Ione you know their
shows have been very large (74-101 riders). Some of us are definitely taking
advantage of the covered arena.
Our year end awards finally arrived and we will be having our yearend party on
January 15 th . The results are still secret at the time that I had to get this in for
printing so you will all read the results next month!
As you read this in February it will be time to start thinking about our shows
starting in March. Our first shows are March 19 th and 20 th . Please be sure to note
that we will not be doing a show on Friday nights in March and April but will
resume them in May.
Also set aside the dates in June for our 2 nd Annual Geek Show! Can’t wait to see
what the Geeks have found for this year!
I hope you have all had great holidays and I am looking forward to seeing you all in
March!
NORTH WEST GYMKHANA ASSOCIATION
BAKERSFIELD AREA
By Claudia Payne
claudia_payne@att.net
District 10 would like to thank Marc McCaslin, the arena owner, for all his hard work
in making sure the ground was great so we could have a show. Mr. McCaslin the
ground was fast!
All of the brave riders and spectators that came out to the show deserve a hand.
Under 40 degree weather, dark cloudy skies and a wind chill factor that felt like 20
degrees you all stuck it out and rode with no whining. You people were scary,
smiling, laughing having a good time, you are a tough bunch.
Our next show is Feb 18th, a Friday night show. Sonja Peery will have another
wonderful warm meal for us (chicken n dumplings).
A thank you to the parents who helped with the gate, set up events and made sure
the kids were on and ready.
See you at the next show!
BE SMART!!
Hello Mavericks Members!
First off, we hope all of you had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
We are very excited to see what fun surprises 2011 will bring us. Everyone rode
awesome at our last show in December!
Everyone helped keep the day moving by working throughout the show, which is
greatly appreciated. We had a special visitor, Santa, and we hope everyone enjoyed
having him!
Congratulations to Victoria Scott Edwards on “Run Dinky Run” who ran a supreme
ride in Figure 8 Stake with a time of 10.682! Wow, that is one fast Maverick!
DISTRICT 27 - IONE/SUTTER CREEK JACKSON AREA
CASTLE COUNTRY RIDERS
http://www.cga27.com
By Carole Lindstrom
Saturday, January 8, the fog was so thick at our house I wasn’t sure I could find my
way down the drive way to get to our arena in Ione. Not only was it foggy, it was
cold. Not just cold, freezing cold. I made it to the arena bundled up like an Eskimo
and suspected my husband was right when he said “No one is gonna come out to
ride in this kind of weather.” Boy, were we wrong. They came and kept coming
and when they were all entered in the computer there were 92 riders shivering
around the arena.
The rain and wind during the past weeks made a small lake of the east end of the
arena so there had to be a slight change of plan and Speed Barrels had to be
replaced with Figure 8 Flags. There was only a little grumbling, mostly from me,
but even with the changes we were able to get the show started just a little after 10
and things ran pretty smoothly. But with nearly 100 riders and lots of new riders
and kids it was slow. Thanks to the arena Manager, Jeanne Dudak, who was
always thinking, we managed to keep the show moving by starting another event in
the second arena as soon as one finished so there was never an empty arena. The
lights were scheduled to go out at 7 and it soon became evident we’d never get
Page 6
through Quadrangle with so many riders before the lights went out. We sure didn’t
want to be running in the dark again so I rode around asking groups how they felt
about skipping Quads and going home a little early. Most reluctantly agreed but
then Maria de Montigny suggested we run Poles I, the only other short event still
available. Jeanne thought about it and decided, yeah, we can do that if we run it in
two arenas. It worked. We finished 7 events, had our awards ceremony and were
out of there before the lights went out at 7.
It was a fun day. We had lots of great help in the booth and many willing hands in
the arena. What a wonderful bunch of people we have at District 27. I know there
were lots of parents out there who’d have much rather been home with their feet up
by the fire, but there they were, hands frozen, feet numb shivering while they set
poles, dragged barrels, set up events, opened gates and did just whatever it took to
make the show a success. Without them there wouldn’t be a show.
Our show on January 22 will be over when you read this and I suspect we’ll have
another big crowd. The two shows in February are on the 12th and 26th and then
we’ll be ready for some spring weather we hope. The first show in March is your
last chance to sign up for our District 27 year end awards and most of you have
seen the wonderful saddle we’ll be awarding for High Point in every division. Then
the last three shows of our season will be our annual Castle Country Challenge and
you sure don’t want to miss out on that.
Check out our web site at CGA27.com for lots of information. If you still have
questions feel free to email or call one of us. We’re happy to help.
Hello all Dusty Spurs, December was a really wet month to say the least!
We are working hard to get the arena ready for out next show on January 15. It will
be a day show sign-up start at 8am and ride at 9am. It is an odd month so we will be
running barrels, PII,Speed Barrels, Big T, Speed Ball, and Single Stake. We are
expecting great weather, but do dress warm as the wind does make it chilly.
We will be collecting non-parishable food for our food drive, please donate. Please
check the web site www.thedustyspurs.org for updated information. See everyone
on the 15th.
DISTRICT 33
VALLECITOS SPURS SAN MARCOS AREA
By Andy Krogh
We ended last year with a wet and waterlogged arena, having to cancel our
December show.
The new year started with questions on whether the arena would be ready to ride or
not..¦.well it was!! With Bob Krogh on the tractor for many hours on Saturday
prepping the arena and the practice arena the grounds on Sunday were perfect. All
of our riders rode hard and had a lot of fun. With nearly 60 riders we started at a little
after 9am and including a much needed lunch break we were finished by 3pm. Lunch
included Burges and Grilled Chicken Sandwiches, Oh So Good.
Our Judges and arena crews, timers and volunteers are what make the show go so
quickly, A Big THANK YOU to all of you! If everyone keep chipping in it will always
go fast and be fun for all.
I do not know where February will bring me as I am expecting my fist
child....hopefully before the show or after the show...Please God not during the
show!! We will be riding fast and hard on February 13th. See you all there!!!
DISTRICT 40 - SANTA MARIA AREA
CENTRAL COAST RIDERS
By Laura Rice
District 40 is pleased to announce that after months of searching we have finally found
a new arena to use. We would like to thank Jeanne and Bobby Jones for donating their
arena for us to use. There were some modifications that needed to be made and they
were gracious enough to accommodate us. Thanks for all of your hard work.
Margo Abatti has measured the arena and it now meets the CGA requirements. Hooray!
District 40 will hold its 1st gymkhana in almost a year on February 6 th . We are very excited
to get things underway. We are trying to accommodate everyone by having both
Saturday and Sunday shows. We are hoping to provide fast ground for all of the AAA+
riders as well as safe ground for everyone. The arena is located approximately 10 miles
east of Orcutt on Cat Canyon Road.
We are basically starting from scratch and it would not be possible without all of the
amazing people involved. We are borrowing the obstacles from Bob Vaughn, the timers
from Jeanette Veino, and the computer and printer from Allyson Shiffrar. Thanks to all
of you for supporting District 40. Hopefully in no time we will be able to purchase our
own equipment.
We would also like to thank the previous board members: Christopher Rowles-
President, Wes Handy- Vice President, Ashlee Vaughn-Secretary, and Allyson Shiffrar
– Treasurer. Thanks for making it a great club.
Now, we would like to welcome the new board: Wes Handy-President, Nathan Rowles-
Vice President, Laura Ledesma-Secretary, and Allyson Shiffrar -Treasurer. Laura Rice
will be announcing and writing the newsletter. Janice Rowles and Jeanne Jones will
be in charge of awards. Jeanette Veino will be the contact person for District 40
information and show schedules.
We would like to thank District 14 Margo Abatti, Sherrie & Shelby Dugger and Shannon
& Corrine Bowman For coming to our meeting and supporting us.
We all look forward to an awesome fun filled year,
Explanation of 5-D Jackpots
For All CGA State Sponsored Shows
Note: District’s may alter all the Jackpot options as they choose for local shows running jackpots or
Mystery jackpots
Riders may optionally enter a jackpot for any or all of the regular events. The cost is an additional $5.00
per event, and a rider may choose to enter the Jackpot for none, some, or all of the regular events. These
jackpots are unrelated to the rider’s division or age, and whether or not they are riding a horse or a pony.
They are based strictly on the time the rider achieves in that event. Only the times of the Riders entering
the Jackpots count. The size of the payout is determined by the number of riders in the jackpot. The
Payout is:
Fastest ride - 40 % of the jackpot
2-D ride - 30 % of the jackpot
3-D ride - 10 % of the jackpot
4-D ride - 10 % of the jackpot
5-D ride - 10 % of the jackpot
CGA - None. All jackpot money is paid back to the riders.
2-D, 3-D, 4-D and 5-D rides are those that come the closest (without going faster) to the fastest time
of those entering the jackpot +(plus) the adjustment factor for that event. The adjustment factors are
listed below.
Event 2-D Adjustment 3-D Adjustment 4-D Adjust. 5-D Adjust.
BAR + 1.380 + 2.761 + 4.141 + 5.521
BR + 1.120 + 2.241 + 3.361 + 4.481
F8F + 3.130 + 6.260 + 9.391 + 12.521
F8S + 0.820 + 1.640 + 2.461 + 3.281
HS + 1.564 + 3.127 + 4.691 + 6.255
KH + 1.317 + 2.634 + 3.951 + 5.268
P1 + 1.534 + 3.067 + 4.601 + 6.135
P2 + 2.367 + 4.734 + 7.101 + 9.468
QR + 1.587 + 3.174 + 4.761 + 6.348
SBL + 1.204 + 2.407 + 3.611 + 4.815
SBR + 0.814 + 1.627 + 2.441 + 3.255
SSR + 0.544 + 1.087 + 1.631 + 2.175
BT + 2.035 + 4.070 + 6.105 + 8.140
For example, if the fastest ride in Poles I was 10.990 seconds, and the jackpot was $400.00, then that
rider would receive $160.00. The rider closest to the 2-D time of 12.524 (10.990 + 1.534) without
going faster would receive $120.00. The rider closest to the 3-D time of 14.057 (10.990 + 3.067)
without going faster would receive $40.00. The rider closest to the 4-D time of 15.591 (10.990 +
4.601) without going faster would receive $40.00. The rider closest to the 5-D time of 17.125 (10.990
+ 6.135) without going faster would receive $40.00.
