Abstract Alchemists features three contemporary artists Chris Martin, Andrew Masullo, and Steve<br />

Roden, whose modern abstractions express the meaning of alchemy, or the transformation of nothing<br />

into something with their distinct use of shape, color, form and texture.<br />

Chris Martin was born in Washington D.C. His work features abstract pieces with elements of collage<br />

that reference nature and the imagery of environment. He is influenced by artists such as Paul Feeley,<br />

Yayoi Kusama and others who are also concerned with the formal qualities of painting.<br />

Andrew Masullo focuses obsessively and intensely on abstract paintings using predominantly primary<br />

and unmixed colors. The works involve inspiration from music as well as the artist’s pantheon of art<br />

heroes including Florine Stettheimer, Forrest Bess, Picabia, Max Ernst and Matisse. Serendipity, skill<br />

and technique plus a free wheeling process of choice all contribute to the eventual evolution of a painting.<br />

Steve Roden is a visual and sound artist from Los Angeles. His working process uses various forms of<br />

specific notation (words, musical scores, maps, etc.) and translates them through self invented systems<br />

into scores, which then influence the process of painting, drawing, sculpture, and sound composition.
