Abstract Alchemists features three contemporary artists Chris Martin, Andrew Masullo, and Steve
Roden, whose modern abstractions express the meaning of alchemy, or the transformation of nothing
into something with their distinct use of shape, color, form and texture.
Chris Martin was born in Washington D.C. His work features abstract pieces with elements of collage
that reference nature and the imagery of environment. He is influenced by artists such as Paul Feeley,
Yayoi Kusama and others who are also concerned with the formal qualities of painting.
Andrew Masullo focuses obsessively and intensely on abstract paintings using predominantly primary
and unmixed colors. The works involve inspiration from music as well as the artist’s pantheon of art
heroes including Florine Stettheimer, Forrest Bess, Picabia, Max Ernst and Matisse. Serendipity, skill
and technique plus a free wheeling process of choice all contribute to the eventual evolution of a painting.
Steve Roden is a visual and sound artist from Los Angeles. His working process uses various forms of
specific notation (words, musical scores, maps, etc.) and translates them through self invented systems
into scores, which then influence the process of painting, drawing, sculpture, and sound composition.
