Prevention and Cardiome Pharma Corp. and a<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the board <strong>of</strong> visitors <strong>of</strong> Morehouse<br />

School <strong>of</strong> Medicine.<br />

Paul Todd (MS ‘60) shared the Meriam/Wiley<br />

Distinguished Author Award <strong>of</strong> the American<br />

Society for Engineering Education with<br />

co-authors Roger G. Harrison, Scott R. Rudge<br />

and Demetri Petrides for the winning engineering<br />

textbook Bioseparations Science and<br />

Engineering (Oxford <strong>University</strong> Press, 2003).<br />

The award is made every two years for textbooks<br />

less than five years old, and selection<br />

is made by a panel <strong>of</strong> engineering educators<br />

appointed by the ASEE.<br />

Joanna Toke (BA ‘04, BS ‘04, MPH ‘05) writes:<br />

“I have just finished my first year <strong>of</strong> law<br />

school at Boston College. This year I became<br />

the only law student in Boston to be awarded<br />

the Schweitzer Fellowship. My project<br />

addresses hurdles that people living with<br />

HIV/AIDS encounter in obtaining housing.<br />

Specifically, I will be finding solutions to the<br />

problems faced by members <strong>of</strong> the HIV<br />

community who have a criminal record.”<br />

Stephen Trokel (MS ’56) writes that he is still<br />

working in his practice and at research. He<br />

has two children, ages 5 and 14, at home and<br />

six grandchildren. He gave rounds at Strong<br />

in September. The topic was “clinical and<br />

technical refinements in laser keratorefractive<br />

surgery.”<br />

Joel Wojciechowski (MS ‘01, PhD ‘05) returned<br />

to <strong>Rochester</strong> to serve as manager for business<br />

development and research for Biomed<br />

Solutions.<br />

Robert T. Brodell (MD ‘79, R ‘81) remains active<br />

with the American Cancer Society, serving<br />

as the national recruitment co-chair for its<br />

advocacy sister organization, the ACS Cancer<br />

Action Network.<br />

Julian Chang (R ‘83) and his wife Doris traveled<br />

from Hong Kong to <strong>Rochester</strong> to dedicate<br />

the “Doris and Julian Chang (R ’83) Physical<br />

Therapy Room” which they donated in honor<br />

<strong>of</strong> C. McCollister Evarts for the Evarts Joint<br />

<strong>Center</strong> at Highland Hospital.<br />

Richard Frothingham (R ‘86) was “Tar Heel <strong>of</strong><br />

the Week” in the August 9 issue <strong>of</strong> the News<br />

& Observer in Raleigh, N.C. The article noted<br />

Frothingham’s work as a drug safety advocate,<br />

a role that grew out <strong>of</strong> his work in Haiti<br />

serving the people <strong>of</strong> the impoverished island<br />

in 1987 in a small hospital about 100 miles<br />

south <strong>of</strong> Port-au-Prince. Currently he works<br />

in infectious disease and is a research scientist<br />

at Duke <strong>University</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong>. He is<br />

married to Margaret Howell Frothingham and<br />

has four children.<br />

Tom Guttuso (R ‘00) is co-author <strong>of</strong> a report<br />

published in the July Obstetrics and<br />

Gynecology journal highlighting the seizure<br />

drug gabapentin and its use as a treatment for<br />

menopause symptoms. The report states that<br />

gabapentin is as effective as estrogen in<br />

relieving symptoms. Sireesha Y. Reddy (R ‘99)<br />

worked with Guttuso as lead author <strong>of</strong> the<br />

report.<br />

Thomas Hansen (FLW ‘03) has joined the<br />

faculty <strong>of</strong> the Southern Illinois <strong>University</strong><br />

School <strong>of</strong> Medicine as an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

<strong>of</strong> orthopaedic surgery, specializing in hand<br />

and upper-extremity surgery. Hansen is a<br />

candidate member <strong>of</strong> the American Academy<br />

<strong>of</strong> Orthopaedic Surgeons. Hansen, a native<br />

<strong>of</strong> Ithaca, N.Y., is married to Anjali Singh, M.D.,<br />

and has a daughter.<br />

Diane Hartmann (MD ‘87, R ‘91), associate<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> obstetrics and gynecology and<br />

associate dean for graduate medical education<br />

at the <strong>University</strong>, was given the Physician<br />

Award from the UR <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong> board.<br />
