As an alumnus <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Rochester</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Medicine and<br />

Dentistry, I am proud to serve as the<br />

<strong>University</strong>’s senior vice president <strong>of</strong><br />

health sciences and chief executive<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong>.<br />

I have deep respect for the places,<br />

people, values and traditions that define<br />

a <strong>Rochester</strong> education. The Miner<br />

Library still resonates for me, and probably<br />

for most graduates <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong><br />

Medicine and Dentistry, with the electricity<br />

<strong>of</strong> learning and discovery and the<br />

shared hours <strong>of</strong> quiet hard work. People,<br />

<strong>of</strong> course, create the most powerful<br />

memories. I sometimes meet Patricia<br />

Hinkle, Ph.D., my faculty advisor during<br />

my Ph.D. work, in the <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong><br />

hallways. Our conversations began more<br />

than 25 years ago. I am gratified and<br />

excited that many <strong>of</strong> the physicians and<br />

researchers who educated me are still<br />

on our faculty, contributing today as they<br />

have in the past. The enthusiasm for<br />

knowledge, passion for discovery and<br />

spirit <strong>of</strong> humanism that pervades the<br />

<strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong> is embodied in our<br />

faculty and carried forward by the thousands<br />

<strong>of</strong> staff who dedicate themselves to<br />

improving health.<br />

These people, places and traditions<br />

provide more than continuity; they also<br />

give us strengths as we face tomorrow’s<br />

opportunities and challenges. Just as<br />

I am at a decisive point in my life, so<br />

too are the School <strong>of</strong> Medicine and<br />

Dentistry and the <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong> at<br />

a crossroads. Our strategic plan must<br />

consider many issues.<br />

I want to see us move up in the<br />

National Institutes <strong>of</strong> Health rankings<br />

to at least No. 25. This will require<br />

sustained investment in recruitment and<br />

facilities. To grow our research enterprise,<br />

we will need to add approximately<br />

400,000 square feet <strong>of</strong> space for research<br />

over the next 10 years. The NIH’s<br />

Clinical and Translational Science<br />

Award (CTSA) to the School <strong>of</strong><br />

Medicine and Dentistry that is discussed<br />

in this issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>Rochester</strong> Medicine will<br />

have immediate and long-term benefits<br />

that are certain to help us advance.<br />

Building on our excellence in basic<br />

science departments and the remarkable<br />

accomplishments <strong>of</strong> our research centers,<br />

we have doubled our NIH funding over<br />

the last eight years. Combined with the<br />

more than $40 million in CTSA funding,<br />

I believe we will achieve our goal!<br />

We also have major clinical<br />

initiatives to elevate our ambulatory<br />

and in-patient services to national<br />

prominence. Bridging disciplines and<br />

departments, we will create clinical<br />

service lines to enhance patient care<br />

in areas such as cardiovascular, cancer,<br />

musculoskeletal and neuromedicine.<br />

I am a physician-scientist because<br />

I not only want to take care <strong>of</strong> people,<br />

I also want to understand basic mechanisms<br />

<strong>of</strong> disease. I see the same<br />

commitment at our School <strong>of</strong> Medicine<br />

and Dentistry: to educate our students<br />

to provide the best care to our patients,<br />

to seek fundamental understandings <strong>of</strong><br />

disease and to make discoveries that<br />

will improve health. As I develop our<br />

strategic plan, these principles will guide<br />

me. We will face significant challenges,<br />

but my experiences as a student, chief<br />

<strong>of</strong> the cardiology division, chair <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Medicine and director<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Cardiovascular Research Institute<br />

have instilled in me an appreciation for<br />

the School’s past and fueled an enthusiasm<br />

for a glorious future.<br />
