Message from the Chairman of the Olympic Solidarity Commission Dear Readers, Message du président de la commission de la Solidarité Olympique We are unable to talk about 2008 without evoking the Olympic Games that were held in Beijing in China. These Games united more than 10’000 athletes representing 204 National Olympic Committees who gathered to celebrate, in a spirit of peace and friendship, the most important sporting festival in the world. Once again, Olympic Solidarity has played an important part in contributing to the success of these Games by offering to athletes an Olympic scholarship programme which has allowed them to access crucial technical and financial backing and thus placing them on an equal footing with other athletes from other parts of the world. From the results achieved by the scholarship holders in Beijing, we are pleased to note the repeated success of this programme which can largely be attributed to the patient and rigorous efforts of Olympic Solidarity, the important work of the National Olympic Committees which have allowed their most deserving athletes to benefit from this programme, to the five Continental Associations of NOCs and to the Summer Olympic International Federations. I am pleased to invite you to peruse this report on the fundamental aspects of this programme, the results obtained during the Beijing Olympic Games and the impact that this has had on contributing to making the Olympic Games a more and more universal event. Cette manifestation a réuni plus de dix mille athlètes représentant quelque 204 Comités Nationaux Olympiques qui se sont retrouvés pour célébrer, dans un esprit de paix et d’amitié, la fête sportive la plus importante du monde. Une fois de plus, la Solidarité Olympique a joué un rôle important au succès indéniable de ces Jeux Olympiques en décidant d’offrir aux athlètes un programme de bourses olympiques qui a permis à ces jeunes prodiges d’avoir accès à un soutien technique de haut niveau, leur permettant ainsi d’être placés sur un pied d’égalité avec leurs homologues bénéficiant d’une expérience et d’une préparation optimales. Nous sommes fiers de constater le succès sans précédent de ce programme qui doit être attribué au travail patient et passionné de la Solidarité Olympique, l’action sérieuse des Comités Nationaux Olympiques qui ont permis à leurs athlètes de profiter des avantages de ce programme, aux cinq Associations continentales de CNO ainsi qu’aux Fédérations Internationales de sports olympiques d’été. Je vous laisse donc prendre connaissance de ce rapport qui résume les aspects fondamentaux du programme et qui vous permettra de mieux comprendre les actions mises en œuvre pour des Jeux Olympiques toujours plus universels.
