2012
THANK YOU FOR
YOUR SUPPORT
Buckingham is an experiment in
excellence. Thirty five years ago
our founders argued that a
university independent of the state
would provide a better education
than would the state-funded
institutions, and our successes in
the National Student Survey have
confirmed their hypothesis.
But being independent means
that we get no Government money,
and every building we build, every
scholarship we award, and every
lecturer we employ, is funded only
by a voluntary transaction. Yet
being a charity, we cannot raise
capital in the money markets,
so we are dependent on donors.
Our donors this year have been
extraordinary. Our Chancellor Lord
Tanlaw has made a huge donation
for the restoration of Prebend
House, building on the remarkable
generosity of the Linbury Trust and
the inspirational initial gift from
Sir Martin Jacomb, our former
Chancellor. And for the first time
we have received donations from
our friends and supporters in and
around the town of Buckingham
for the refurbishment of the
Radcliffe Centre as a lovely
lecture theatre and concert venue.
We thank you all.
These restorations have been
but two examples of how every
donation – however small –
improves the University. We need
donors the way fish need water and
we thank every single one of them
from the bottom of our hearts.
DONOR UPDATE:
THE FACTS
The University of Buckingham
is ranked top of the student
satisfaction league table in the
National Student Survey – and has
been in pole position for six years.
That reflects our small teaching
groups and care for students.
During 2011 the University received
£2,828,140 thanks to the support
of donors like you.
With your help we have been able to
make significant improvements to
the University campus and enhance
the student experience, helping
to maintain our position at the top
of the National Student Survey.
GIFTS OVER
THE YEARS
Since the early days, the University
of Buckingham has benefited from
the generous financial support of
donors. This timeline highlights
some of the major philanthropic
support the University has received.
1972 Motivated by the desire to see
an independent institution of higher
education in the United Kingdom,
Lord Tanlaw donated £1m through
the Istra Trust to enable
Buckingham to get off the ground.
At the same time Ralph Yablon,
through his family trust, donated
the Hunter Street site to the
University.
1973-95 The Esmée Fairbairn
Foundation gave £1m for a chair,
undergraduate bursaries and the
Ian Fairbairn Lecture Hall.
1980-92 The Bernard Sunley
Charitable Foundation donated
£1.5m for buildings, including a
student residence and the Sunley
Lecture Theatre.
1989 A benefaction of £1m from the
Warren family meant the University
could buy the Chandos Road
building in order to extend its
facilities for teaching and learning.
1995 Sir Evelyn de Rothschild
donated just over £1m through the
Eranda Foundation in memory of his
father, Sir Anthony de Rothschild.
This enabled Buckingham to erect
a purpose-built business school
adjacent to the Great River Ouse.
2008-09 Sir Martin Jacomb, the
University’s Chancellor, and the
Linbury Trust gave generous gifts
to enable the University to restore
the exterior of Prebend House,
a beautiful listed building dating
back to the reign of Queen Anne.
2011 Lord and Lady Tanlaw pledged
£1m to refurbish the interior of
Prebend House for use as a
graduate school in the social
sciences.
THE GREGORY SCHOLARSHIP
AND BURSARY FUND
Scholarships are a hugely generous
way of giving something back to the
next generation. The Gregory Fund
is the largest scholarship and
bursary fund at the University
enabling undergraduates from
disadvantaged backgrounds to
have access to a degree course
that might be denied them
otherwise. The University is very
grateful to Robert and Dorothy
Gregory for leaving £1m to
Buckingham for this purpose.
An astute and independentminded
Yorkshireman, Bobby
Gregory never went to university
himself but, after retiring to the
Algarve, he read Vice-Chancellor
Terence Kealey’s articles in
The Daily Telegraph. These articles
struck a chord and one day he
said to his wife Dorothy: “I’m going
to leave our money to this place,
I think.”
His idea is that if you teach a
student to learn – a skill, a craft,
a philosophy, or, even, just how to
survive – such a person goes on to
teach or to reach out to 100 others
and, so it goes on, down the chain.
Bobby and Dorothy’s bequest is
the embodiment of that idea and
their generous gift is now helping
students to receive an education
at Buckingham.
PIONEER FUND
36th Anniversary Campaign
Our aim is to raise £20m in the
next five years to upgrade the
campus, launch a Medical
School, provide bursaries and
scholarships for needy students,
and refurbish the Business
School and Law School.
Bursaries
We want to raise £10m for bursaries
to attract home students who
would not otherwise be able to
contemplate an education at
the University of Buckingham.
Medical School
We are seeking £6m to establish an
independent medical school which
would operate in both Buckingham
and Milton Keynes. The money
would be used principally to erect
a building alongside Milton Keynes
Hospital in which medical students
would be taught.
Law School and Business School
The existing Schools of Law and
Business are showing their age and
are in need of a radical revamp to
make the University competitive in
today’s international higher
education environment.
We envisage the cost would be £1m
to upgrade each building. The Law
School needs new lecture theatres
and social learning spaces; the
Business School needs a facelift
and would like to establish
a simulated trading floor.
