The San Marcos
Water Treatment Plant,
owned by the City of
San Marcos, began operation
in January 2000.
GBRA was selected by
the city to operate this
$7.2 million facility that
has an initial treatment
capacity of 6 mgd. The
plant can be expanded
to 24 mgd to meet
future regional growth
requirements.
GBRA built and owns
the pump station at
Lake Dunlap that
diverts stored water
from Canyon Reservoir,
and the 24 miles of
pipeline that deliver the
water to the plant for
treatment. This conversion
to surface water
has reduced the City of
San Marcos' daily pumping
from the Edwards
Aquifer by an average of
75%, which helps protect
the springflow contributions
to the
Guadalupe River from
the Comal Springs and
the San Marcos Springs.
Another benefit is that
existing city wells can be
reserved for use as supplemental
resources during
peak usage periods.
The San Marcos Regional Water Treatment Plant is operated by GBRA under contract with the City
of San Marcos. Employees Willie Harris, Plant Operator; Jerry Sharp, Plant Operator; James Bolton,
Plant Operator; Dan Drugan, Plant Operator; Garry McAlpin, Plant Operator; and Plant Manager
Darel Ball are responsible for the maintenance and treatment processes of this 6 mgd regional facility.
