Job Purpose<br />

To identify suitable work placements within the Local Area <strong>and</strong> to support <strong>and</strong> advise<br />

colleagues on all types of work placements. Developing work placement schemes within<br />

the Local Area <strong>and</strong> contribute towards the development of the work placement policy.<br />

To provide information, advice <strong>and</strong> guidance to help pupils make realistic choices about<br />

education, training <strong>and</strong> work opportunities.<br />

Key responsibilities<br />

A. The provision of an efficient <strong>and</strong> effective work related learning programme that meets<br />

the needs of the school.<br />

B. The provision of an efficient <strong>and</strong> effective careers advisory service that meets the needs of<br />

the school.<br />

Key Tasks<br />

A1 To liaise with managers, students, parents, school <strong>and</strong> other external agencies about<br />

work placements <strong>and</strong> apprenticeships as appropriate.<br />

A2 To ensure that placements comply with health <strong>and</strong> safety regulations.<br />

A3 To work with managers to ensure that they are aware of the aims of apprenticeships<br />

<strong>and</strong> work placements <strong>and</strong> other related issues <strong>and</strong> that placements are suitable.<br />

A4 To keep abreast of developments in work experience initiatives locally <strong>and</strong> nationally<br />

<strong>and</strong> to collect <strong>and</strong> disseminate relevant information <strong>and</strong> good practice relating to work<br />

experience to managers.<br />

A5 Develop <strong>and</strong> maintain databases.<br />

A6 Devise new systems <strong>and</strong> processes with the aim of making the scheme effective <strong>and</strong><br />

efficient.<br />

A7 To monitor work placements in order to maintain an overview of what is going on <strong>and</strong><br />

to ensure a high quality learning experience.<br />

A8 Provide advice on all work placement schemes.<br />

A9 To be proactive in identifying any new sources of income.<br />

B1 Responsible for arranging <strong>and</strong> co-ordinating <strong>School</strong> presence at relevant job <strong>and</strong> careers<br />

events <strong>and</strong> actively sourcing events to attend.<br />

B2 Attending careers <strong>and</strong> job events as a participant.<br />

B3 Regular update of the relevant pages of the internet/intranet site.<br />

B4 Interviewing pupils one to one or in small groups


B5 Identifying their needs using the CAPIR referral <strong>and</strong> assessment tool<br />

B6 Providing information, advice <strong>and</strong> guidance about a range of issues, e.g. careers,<br />

education, employment <strong>and</strong> training etc.<br />

B7 Assisting pupils to draw up action plans for employment, education <strong>and</strong> training <strong>and</strong><br />

supporting them in the achievement of these goals.<br />

B8 Running small group sessions or larger presentations on all aspects of careers work <strong>and</strong><br />

topics related to personal development<br />

B9 Liaising <strong>and</strong> negotiating with other organisations on behalf of pupils.<br />

B10 Working with families <strong>and</strong> carers so that they can give support<br />

B11 Using IT for administrative tasks, such as recording interactions with <strong>and</strong> tracking<br />

pupils.<br />

B12 Using computer aided guidance packages, skills assessment tools, tests <strong>and</strong> personal<br />

inventories<br />

B13 Planning <strong>and</strong> organising careers fairs <strong>and</strong> conventions<br />

B14 Keeping up to date with labour market information, legislation, <strong>and</strong> professional <strong>and</strong><br />

academic developments, by visiting employers, training providers <strong>and</strong> training events<br />

run by educational <strong>and</strong> professional bodies<br />

D1 Ability to work occasional evening <strong>and</strong> weekends<br />

D2 Any other duties within the scope of the post.<br />

school’s objectives.<br />

Participation in extra-curricular activities is voluntary but all staff members are encouraged to<br />

participate in, lead <strong>and</strong> promote activities to build good relationships with young people <strong>and</strong><br />

broaden their informal learning opportunities.<br />
