Drug Action Teams (DATs) are local multi-agency strategic partnerships tasked to
identify and co-ordinate local action and priorities on substance misuse. The major
partners represented on West Lothian DAT are:

The role and function of the DAT is to provide strategic direction for action in
relation to drugs, alcohol, tobacco and solvent use in West Lothian. This is achieved
by leading and co-ordinating specifi c action and ensuring effective and efficient
development of initiatives to tackle substance misuse in West Lothian.
Support and treatment for substance users in West Lothian is provided in varying
ways by the NHS through GP surgeries, hospitals and specialist clinics, Local
Authority social work and voluntary organisations. This directory highlights the
range of services that provide help and support for people with substance misuse
issues.

Problems Clinic (Edinburgh)
• Follow-up focusing on relapse prevention

• Edinburgh service located at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital

• Al-Anon offers understanding and support for families and friends of problem
drinkers, whether the user is still drinking or not
• At Al-Anon group meetings members receive comfort and understanding and learn
to cope with their problems through the exchange of experience, strength and
hope. The sharing of problems binds individuals and groups together in a bond
that is protected by a policy of anonymity. Members learn that there are things they
can do to help themselves and indirectly to help the problem drinker. Changed
attitudes, which come from greater understanding of the illness, may result in the
drinker seeking help

Service offered:
• A DTTO is a special order that is aimed at assisting offenders to reduce their drug
use and related offending
Who can access the service
• A DTTO will be actioned usually when a client is over 21 and has appeared in court
several times before
• The client has a history of drug misuse
• Must want to change their life
• The social worker preparing your Social Enquiry Report will speak to you if they think
you might be suitable for a DTTO
• Must have pled or been found guilty
Where and when is the service
• If you get a DTTO you will be expected to do what your social worker instructs you to
do
• Your treatment will begin immediately
• One month from the date of getting an order you will attend a Review in Court when
the Sheriff will consider your progress and look at your drug test results
• Failure to comply with your treatment plan will result in a breach report being sent to
the court
Referral process:
• No DTTO order can be made without your consent
• It is important that you understand how the DTTO works, so if you have any doubts,
speak to the Court Social Worker or your Lawyer

The Hearth project has been established by fsu Scotland to assist children and
families in West Lothian who are affected by parental drug and/or alcohol use. Family
support outreach workers work with children and families and offer support that meets

• The acute medical unit is primarily for acute medical emergencies. This includes
acute DT’s and alcohol related seizures and also drug overdose.
• The unit commonly admits patients with acute conditions who are alcohol dependent.
In these cases patients receive in-patient treatment for alcohol withdrawal.
• Similarly patients taking other drugs are admitted with acute conditions. These
patients are treated for their acute effects and discharged. No detox regime is used
unless CDPS are involved.
• Alcohol dependent patients offered further support including phone numbers for
support agencies, contact with the Alcohol and Drug Use Co-ordinator, contact with
Liaison Psychiatry
