Drug Action Teams (DATs) are local multi-agency strategic partnerships tasked to<br />

identify and co-ord<strong>in</strong>ate local action and priorities on substance misuse. The major<br />

partners represented on <strong>West</strong> <strong>Lothian</strong> DAT are:<br />

The role and function of the DAT is to provide strategic direction <strong>for</strong> action <strong>in</strong><br />

relation to drugs, alcohol, tobacco and solvent use <strong>in</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Lothian</strong>. This is achieved<br />

<strong>by</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g and co-ord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g specifi c action and ensur<strong>in</strong>g effective and efficient<br />

development of <strong>in</strong>itiatives to tackle substance misuse <strong>in</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Lothian</strong>.<br />

Support and treatment <strong>for</strong> substance users <strong>in</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Lothian</strong> is provided <strong>in</strong> vary<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ways <strong>by</strong> the NHS through GP surgeries, hospitals and specialist cl<strong>in</strong>ics, Local<br />

Authority social work and voluntary organisations. This directory highlights the<br />

range of services that provide help and support <strong>for</strong> people with substance misuse<br />

issues.<br />

Service offered:<br />

• A DTTO is a special order that is aimed at assist<strong>in</strong>g offenders to reduce their drug<br />

use and related offend<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Who can access the service<br />

• A DTTO will be actioned usually when a client is over 21 and has appeared <strong>in</strong> court<br />

several times be<strong>for</strong>e<br />

• The client has a history of drug misuse<br />

• Must want to change their life<br />

• The social worker prepar<strong>in</strong>g your Social Enquiry Report will speak to you if they th<strong>in</strong>k<br />

you might be suitable <strong>for</strong> a DTTO<br />

• Must have pled or been found guilty<br />

Where and when is the service<br />

• If you get a DTTO you will be expected to do what your social worker <strong>in</strong>structs you to<br />

do<br />

• Your treatment will beg<strong>in</strong> immediately<br />

• One month from the date of gett<strong>in</strong>g an order you will attend a Review <strong>in</strong> Court when<br />

the Sheriff will consider your progress and look at your drug test results<br />

• Failure to comply with your treatment plan will result <strong>in</strong> a breach report be<strong>in</strong>g sent to<br />

the court<br />

Referral process:<br />

• No DTTO order can be made without your consent<br />

• The acute medical unit is primarily <strong>for</strong> acute medical emergencies. This <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />

acute DT’s and alcohol related seizures and also drug overdose.<br />

• The unit commonly admits patients with acute conditions who are alcohol dependent.<br />

In these cases patients receive <strong>in</strong>-patient treatment <strong>for</strong> alcohol withdrawal.<br />

• Similarly patients tak<strong>in</strong>g other drugs are admitted with acute conditions. These<br />

patients are treated <strong>for</strong> their acute effects and discharged. No detox regime is used<br />

unless CDPS are <strong>in</strong>volved.<br />

• Alcohol dependent patients offered further support <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g phone numbers <strong>for</strong><br />
