Inaugural FIU Alumni Party
The Athletic Training Program and FIU
Athletics teamed up to host the inaugural
FIU Alumni Party on Tuesday, June
25th, 2013 during the National Athletic
Trainers’ Association Annual Meeting
and Clinical Symposia. The alumni party
was a great success! Alumni had the
opportunity to reconnect with fellow
classmates as well as meet alumni from
other graduating classes.
Current students and alumni from the
Athletic Training Program were in attendance
as well as alumni from the
former Post-Professional Athletic
Training Program. Current and former
Athletic Trainers as well as Graduate
Assistant Athletic Trainers from FIU
Athletics joined the party as well.
Close friends of FIU came by, including
athletic trainers from Cirque de
Soleil, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Carolina
Panthers, and the Philadelphia
Eagles. Some photos from the party
are in the photo album (p. 4)
The FIU Alumni Party was a huge success!
Alumni are already looking forward
to the party next year. Many
thanks to Ora Strickland, Dean of the
College of Nursing and Health Sciences,
and Julie Berg, Senior Associate
Athletic Director, for their support in
making this inaugural FIU Alumni
Party such a success.
From the Director’s Desk……………….…….
Congratulations to Laurie
Duemmling for passing the
National Athletic Trainers’ Association
Board of Certification
(BOC) exam on her first attempt!
I am so proud that our 100%
first-time pass rate on BOC exam
continues. The graduating
classes of 2011, 2012, and 2013
have obtained a 100% first-time
pass rate.
This achievement is amazing! I
want to thank Dr. Odai, our adjunct
faculty, and
our preceptors for
providing our athletic
training students
with a high quality education.
Also, I want to thank our
students for working so hard as
well…we are very proud of your
accomplishments.

Educators Spotlight:
UHZ Sports Medicine Institute
Farah Bouie, Drialys Leal
and the rest of the medical
staff at UHZ Sports Medicine
Institute have been
named the Educators-ofthe-Month
for June 2013.
Kasey Richardson, who
nominated them for this
recognition, has this to say
about the education UHZ
Sports Medicine Institute
provides:
“I would like to nominate
Farah Bouie and Drialys
Leal (mine & Paul's preceptors)
and the rest of
the Athletic Trainers at
UHZ Sports Medicine Institute
for Educators-ofthe-Month.
As athletic
training students, Paul
and I not only work with
our own preceptors but
the other Athletic Trainers,
Physician Assistants
and Physicians. Everyone
at UHZ wants us to succeed
and do our best.
They are constantly
teaching and showing us
new things, from how to
remove stitches and staples,
to prepping injections,
to different ways to
perform special tests.
They explain to us the surgical
procedures with
models and drawings,
what to look for on x-rays
and MRIs, and how to
narrow down diagnoses
from histories. The Athletic
Trainers have since let
us try our own hand at
the skills we have learned,
trusting us to remove
stitches and staples, prep
patients for injections,
and try out special
tests on patients. (We
recently even felt a
positive Lachman's!)
They ask us what we
think the diagnosis is,
why a patient is susceptible
to that injury,
and what we think could
or should be done. Furthermore,
they ask us
what we think we see on x
-rays and MRIs. Since I
have been at UHZ, I feel
that I have grown from
an insecure student, to a
more confident and able
future athletic trainer.
Working at UHZ has
truly been a big step
that will help me transition
into the real world
of athletic training.”
Congratulations to Farah
Bouie, Drialys Leal, and
the rest of the medical
staff at UHZ and thank
you for being such great
educators!
The CAATE Corner
The CAATE has changed the clinical education hours
requirement. Athletic Training programs are no longer
bound by the federal work study hour guidelines.
Programs must have a written policy that delineates
the minimum/maximum requirement for clinical
hours. The FIU Athletic Training Program policy on
clinical hours is:
Level I, II, and III students
Minimum = 15 hours / week
Maximum = 30 hours / week
Level IV and V students
Minimum = 20 hours / week
Maximum = 40 hours / week
If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Restrepo
at 305-348-3398 or dohertyj@fiu.edu
