guide to
London Brick

02
03
Today there are more than
26 different bricks in the
London Brick range, from the
soft, sandy coloured Hereward
Light, to the dark, distinctively
wavy-ridged Rustic.
Times change,
but a brick is a brick…
...isn’t it
Well not if it’s a London Brick!
Originally manufactured by The London Brick
Company and now under the ownership of
Hanson; London Bricks have built a reputation
for themselves as a popular, well known product
that’s not been out of style in over 100 years!
From the time the kilns were first lit in the late
19th century we’ve been in production ever since!
Visit us at: www.hanson.biz/uk
They all offer the continuity of
manufacture, finish, colour and
weathering that make them ideal for
matching to existing brickwork for
extensions and remedial work. If you’re
working on any of the 5 million homes
in the UK originally built from London
Brick stock, then all your matching
and continuity problems are solved.
And remember
London Bricks have
the distinctive ‘frog’
feature making them
easier to cut and
handle.
Nowadays buying the London Brick
couldn’t be simpler, with more stockists
than ever offering a greater range.
We’re introducing new Point of Sale
and signage to provide you with more
information and to help make your
selection trouble free. Look out for the
signs, “London Bricks Stocked Here”
and you can be sure of immediate
availability, when you want it.
What’s more, to ensure you
make a correct brick match
every time, we have produced
a London Brick Matching Guide.
Finding what you want:
The bricks on the following pages have been
organised by colour categories, so that you can
quickly find the colour ranges that suit your
projects. In some cases texture is as important
as colour to reflect the look and feel of existing
brickwork and to ensure a correct match.
Don’t forget that some of the bricks are available
in 73mm as well as 65mm, check the Technical
Section on page 15.
London Extras
Technical Info
Also in the
London Brick range
are two types that
are often underrated.
Commons
The standard brick for all purposes
by virtue of its strength, durability and
uniformity. It is used extensively for
industrial chimneys, foundations and
other specialist work.
These are available in both 65mm
and 73mm formats with a minimum
of 25 N/mm 2 when laid ‘frog’ up.
Selected Regrades
As well as Commons, don’t forget we
also have available from time to time,
a range of London Selected Regrades,
manufactured under the strict quality
assurance system BS EN ISO 9001.
These are assorted bricks from our
London Brick range that have been
reclassified after firing because of their
non standard colour, texture or because
they have minor damage. Their physical
properties, size, compressive strength
etc are the same as for best quality
London Bricks. Selected Regrades
conform to the requirements of
BS EN 771-1. Due to their inconsistency
in colour and texture however, these
products are not suitable for facings.
Technical Information
All London Bricks are manufactured to comply
with BS EN 771-1 – ‘Specification for masonry
units – Part 1: Clay masonry units’ to a size of
215mm x 102.5mm x 65mm.
They all conform to the technical specification:
or 1 : 1 /2 : 4 1 /2 cement* : lime : sand + plasticiser
* Free-standing walls and severely exposed free standing walls, or for rendered brickwork
use sulphate-resisting cement.
The application of render to chimneys, parapet walls and retaining walls is not
recommended. More detailed advice on the above can be found on the Hanson website.
Alternatively, advice and information can be obtained from Hanson’s Product Services
Department on 08706 097092.

Coping with dpc and 45mm overhang for London brickwork.
Concrete coping can be used as an alternative.
• Protect London free-standing
walls, retaining walls,
chimneys and external pillars
with an overhanging coping
shedding water at least 45mm
from face of brickwork.
• Protect earth face of retaining
walls with a continuous
waterproof membrane.
Bricklaying
• Fill all joints.
• Avoid over tapping
new-laid bricks.
• Avoid adjusting bricks after
• Avoid mortar staining on
exposed brick face – remove
Avoid mortar stains.
• Protect work under
protect newly completed work
from overnight frosts.
• Do not build in freezing
neither is required, as in most
low-rise dwellings, bricks may
be laid frog down.
• Painting directly on to
external London walls is
generally not recommended.
For further advice contact our
Product Services Department
on 08706 097092.
Mortars
• Use clean sharp sand such
as BS 1200 grade S.
• Batch materials in measured
volumes, not shovelfuls.
• Machine mixing is generally
better than hand mixing.
• Only add plasticizers,
colouring pigments etc,
strictly to manufacturer’s
instructions.
• Discard unused mortar more
than two hours old.
Protect earth face of
retaining walls with a
continuous membrane.
